The generalized TAP free energy II

In a recent paper [14], we developed the generalized TAP approach for mixed $p$-spin models with Ising spins at positive temperature. Here we extend these results in two directions. We find a simplified representation for the energy of the generalized TAP states in terms of the Parisi measure of the model and, in particular, show that the energy of all states at a given distance from the origin is the same. Furthermore, we prove the analogues of the positive temperature results at zero temperature, which concern the ground-state energy and the organization of ground-state configurations in space.

Order of Fluctuations of the Free Energy in the SK Model at Critical Temperature

We present an elementary approach to the order of fluctuations for the free energy in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean field spin glass model at and near the critical temperature. It is proved that at the critical temperature the variance of the free energy is of $O((\log N)^2).$ In addition, we show that if one approaches the critical temperature from the low temperature regime at the rate $O(N^{-α})$ for some $α>0,$ then the variance is of $O((\log N)^2+N^{1-α}).$

On the TAP free energy in the mixed $p$-spin models

In [Physical Magazine, 35(3):593-601, 1977], Thouless, Anderson, and Palmer derived a representation for the free energy of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, called the TAP free energy, written as the difference of the energy and entropy on the extended configuration space of local magnetizations with an Onsager correction term. In the setting of mixed $p$-spin models with Ising spins, we prove that the free energy can indeed be written as the supremum of the TAP free energy over the space of local magnetizations whose Edwards-Anderson order parameter (self-overlap) is to the right of the support of the Parisi measure. Furthermore, for generic mixed $p$-spin models, we prove that the free energy is equal to the TAP free energy evaluated on the local magnetization of any pure state.

Suboptimality of local algorithms for a class of max-cut problems

We show that in random $K$-uniform hypergraphs of constant average degree, for even $K \geq 4$, local algorithms defined as factors of i.i.d. can not find nearly maximal cuts, when the average degree is sufficiently large. These algorithms have been used frequently to obtain lower bounds for the max-cut problem on random graphs, but it was not known whether they could be successful in finding nearly maximal cuts. This result follows from the fact that the overlap of any two nearly maximal cuts in such hypergraphs does not take values in a certain non-trivial interval - a phenomenon referred to as the overlap gap property - which is proved by comparing diluted models with large average degree with appropriate fully connected spin glass models and showing the overlap gap property in the latter setting.

Phase transition in the spiked random tensor with Rademacher prior

We consider the problem of detecting a deformation from a symmetric Gaussian random $p$-tensor $(p\geq 3)$ with a rank-one spike sampled from the Rademacher prior. Recently in Lesieur et al. (2017), it was proved that there exists a critical threshold $β_p$ so that when the signal-to-noise ratio exceeds $β_p$, one can distinguish the spiked and unspiked tensors and weakly recover the prior via the minimal mean-square-error method. On the other side, Perry, Wein, and Bandeira (2017) proved that there exists a $β_p'<β_p$ such that any statistical hypothesis test can not distinguish these two tensors, in the sense that their total variation distance asymptotically vanishes, when the signa-to-noise ratio is less than $β_p'$. In this work, we show that $β_p$ is indeed the critical threshold that strictly separates the distinguishability and indistinguishability between the two tensors under the total variation distance. Our approach is based on a subtle analysis of the high temperature behavior of the pure $p$-spin model with Ising spin, arising initially from the field of spin glasses. In particular, we identify the signal-to-noise criticality $β_p$ as the critical temperature, distinguishing the high and low temperature behavior, of the Ising pure $p$-spin mean-field spin glass model.

On concentration properties of disordered Hamiltonians

We present an elementary approach to concentration of disordered Hamiltonians. Assuming differentiability of the limiting free energy $F$ with respect to the inverse temperature $β$, we show that the Hamiltonian concentrates around the energy level $F'(β)$ under the free energy and Gibbs average.

A duality principle in spin glasses

We prove a duality principle that connects the thermodynamic limits of the free energies of the Hamiltonians and their squared interactions. Under the main assumption that the limiting free energy is concave in the squared temperature parameter, we show that this relation is valid in a large class of disordered systems. In particular, when applied to mean field spin glasses, this duality provides an interpretation of the Parisi formula as an inverted variational principle, establishing a prediction of Guerra.

On the energy landscape of the mixed even $p$-spin model

We investigate the energy landscape of the mixed even $p$-spin model with Ising spin configurations. We show that for any given energy level between zero and the maximal energy, with overwhelming probability there exist exponentially many distinct spin configurations such that their energies stay near this energy level. Furthermore, their magnetizations and overlaps are concentrated around some fixed constants. In particular, at the level of maximal energy, we prove that the Hamiltonian exhibits exponentially many orthogonal peaks. This improves the results of Chatterjee and Ding-Eldan-Zhai, where the former established a logarithmic size of the number of the orthogonal peaks, while the latter proved a polynomial size. Our second main result obtains disorder chaos at zero temperature and at any external field. As a byproduct, this implies that the fluctuation of the maximal energy is superconcentrated when the external field vanishes and obeys a Gaussian limit law when the external field is present.

Disorder chaos in some diluted spin glass models

We prove disorder chaos at zero temperature for three types of diluted models with large connectivity parameter: $K$-spin antiferromagnetic Ising model for even $K\geq 2$, $K$-spin spin glass model for even $K\geq 2$, and random $K$-sat model for all $K\geq 2$. We show that modifying even a small proportion of clauses results in near maximizers of the original and modified Hamiltonians being nearly orthogonal to each other with high probability. We use a standard technique of approximating diluted models by appropriate fully connected models and then apply disorder chaos results in this setting, which include both previously known results as well as new examples motivated by the random $K$-sat model.

On the energy landscape of spherical spin glasses

We investigate the energy landscape of the spherical mixed even p-spin model near its maximum energy. We relate the distance between pairs of near maxima to the support of the Parisi measure at zero temperature. We then provide an algebraic relation that characterizes one-step replica symmetric breaking Parisi measures. For these measures, we show that any two nonparallel spin configurations around the maximum energy are asymptotically orthogonal to each other. In sharp contrast, we study models with full replica symmetry breaking and show that all possible values of the asymptotic distance are attained near the maximum energy.

Temperature chaos in some spherical mixed $p$-spin models

We give two types of examples of the spherical mixed even-$p$-spin models for which chaos in temperature holds. These complement some known results for the spherical pure $p$-spin models and for models with Ising spins. For example, in contrast to a recent result of Subag who showed absence of chaos in temperature in the spherical pure $p$-spin models for $p\geq 3$, we show that even a smaller order perturbation induces temperature chaos.

Parisi formula, disorder chaos and fluctuation for the ground state energy in the spherical mixed p-spin models

We show that the limiting ground state energy of the spherical mixed p-spin model can be identified as the infimum of certain variational problem. This complements the well-known Parisi formula for the limiting free energy in the spherical model. As an application, we obtain explicit formulas for the limiting ground state energy in the replica symmetry, one level of replica symmetry breaking and full replica symmetry breaking phases at zero temperature. In addition, our approach leads to new results on disorder chaos in spherical mixed even p-spin models. In particular, we prove that when there is no external field, the location of the ground state energy is chaotic under small perturbations of the disorder. We also establish that in the spherical mixed even p-spin model, the ground state energy superconcentrates in the absence of external field, while it obeys a central limit theorem if the external field is present.

Variational representations for the Parisi functional and the two-dimensional Guerra-Talagrand bound

The validity of the Parisi formula in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model (SK) was initially proved by Talagrand [18]. The central argument therein relied on a very dedicated study of the coupled free energy via the two-dimensional Guerra-Talagrand (GT) replica symmetry breaking bound. It is believed that this bound and its higher dimensional generalization are highly related to the conjectures of temperature chaos and ultrametricity in the SK model, but a complete investigation remains elusive. Motivated by Bovier-Klimovsky [2] and Auffinger-Chen [3], the aim of this paper is to present a novel approach to analyzing the Parisi functional and the two-dimensional GT bound in the mixed $p$-spin models in terms of optimal stochastic control problems. We compute the directional derivative of the Parisi functional and derive equivalent criteria for the Parisi measure. We demonstrate how our approach provides a simple and efficient control for the GT bound that yields several new results on Talagrand's positivity of the overlap [20,Section 14.12] and disorder chaos in Chatterjee [5] and Chen [6]. In particular, we provide some examples of the models containing odd $p$-spin interactions.

Fluctuations of the free energy in the mixed $p$-spin models with external field

We show that the free energy in the mixed $p$-spin models of spin glasses does not superconcentrate in the presence of external field, which means that its variance is of the order suggested by the Poincaré inequality. This complements the result of Chatterjee who showed that the free energy superconcentrates when there is no external field. For models without odd $p$-spin interactions for $p\geq 3$, we prove the central limit theorem for the free energy at any temperature and give an explicit formula for the limiting variance. Although we only deal with the case of Ising spins, all our results can be extended to the spherical models as well.

The Legendre structure of the Parisi formula

We show that the Parisi formula of the mixed $p$-spin model is a concave function of the squared inverse temperature. This allows us to derive a new expression for the Parisi formula that involves the inverse temperature and the Parisi measure as Legendre conjugate variables.

Limit Theorems in the Imitative Monomer-Dimer Mean-Field Model via Stein's Method

We consider the imitative monomer-dimer model on the complete graph introduced in [1]. It was understood that this model is described by the monomer density and has a phase transition along certain critical line. By reverting the model to a weighted Curie-Weiss model with hard core interaction, we establish the complete description of the fluctuation properties of the monomer density on the full parameter space via Stein's method of exchangeable pairs. We show that this quantity exhibits the central limit theorem away from the critical line and enjoys a non-normal limit theorem at criticality with normalized exponent $3/4$. Furthermore, our approach also allows to obtain the conditional central limit theorems along the critical line. In all these results, the Berry-Esseen inequalities for the Kolomogorov-Smirnov distance are given.

Disorder chaos in the spherical mean-field model

We consider the problem of disorder chaos in the spherical mean-field model. It is concerned about the behavior of the overlap between two independently sampled spin configurations from two Gibbs measures with the same external parameters. The prediction states that if the disorders in the Hamiltonians are slightly decoupled, then the overlap will be concentrated near a constant value. Following Guerra's replica symmetry breaking scheme, we establish this at the level of the free energy as well as the Gibbs measure irrespective the presence or absence of the external field.
