Equivariant cohomology of incidence Hilbert schemes and loop algebras

Let $S$ be the affine plane $\C^2$ together with an appropriate $\mathbb T = \C^*$ action. Let $\hil{m,m+1}$ be the incidence Hilbert scheme. Parallel to \cite{LQ}, we construct an infinite dimensional Lie algebra that acts on the direct sum $$\Wft = \bigoplus_{m=0}^{+\infty}H^{2(m+1)}_{\mathbb T}(S^{[m,m+1]})$$ of the middle-degree equivariant cohomology group of $\hil{m,m+1}$. The algebra is related to the loop algebra of an infinite dimensional Heisenberg algebra. In addition, we study the transformations among three different linear bases of $\Wft$. Our results are applied to the ring structure of the ordinary cohomology of $\hil{m,m+1}$ and to the ring of symmetric functions in infinitely many variables.

Values of coefficients of cyclotomic polynomials II

Let a(n,k) be the kth coefficient of the nth cyclotomic polynomial. The first two authors showed in part I that if m is a prime power and n and k range over the non-negative integers, then a(mn,k) assumes every integer value. Here this result is extended to the case where m is arbitrary. The proof use some properties of reciprocal cyclotomic polynomials (see arXiv:0709.1570).

Two point extremal Gromov-Witten invariants of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces

Given an algebraic surface $X$, the Hilbert scheme $X^{[n]}$ of $n$-points on $X$ admits a contraction morphism to the $n$-fold symmetric product $X^{(n)}$ with the extremal ray generated by a class $β_n$ of a rational curve. We determine the two point extremal GW-invariants of $X^{[n]}$ with respect to the class $dβ_n$ for a simply-connected projective surface $X$ and the quantum first Chern class operator of the tautological bundle on $X^{[n]}$. The methods used are vertex algebraic description of $H^*(X^{[n]})$, the localization technique applied to $X=\mathbb P^2$, and a generalization of the reduction theorem of Kiem-J. Li to the case of meromorphic 2-forms.

Incidence Hilbert schemes and infinite dimensional Lie algebras

Given a projetive surface $S$, using correspondences, we construct an infinite dimensional Lie algebra that acts on the direct sum $\Wfock$ of the cohomology groups of the incidence Hilbert schemes $S^{[n,n+1]}$ over all $n$. The algebra is related to an extension of an infinite dimensional Heisenberg algebra. The space $\Wfock$ is a highest weight representation of this algebra. Our result provides a representation-theoretic interpretation of Cheah's generating function of Betti numbers of the incidence Hilbert schemes. As a consequence, an additive basis of the cohomology group of the incidence Hilbert scheme is obtained.

On the Euler numbers of certain moduli spaces of curves and points

We determine the topological Euler number of certain moduli space of 1-dimensional closed subschemes in a smooth projective variety which admits a Zariski-locally trivial fibration with 1-dimensional fibers. The main approach is to use virtual Hodge polynomials and torus actions. The results might shed some light on the corresponding Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

On certain moduli spaces of ideal sheaves and Donaldson-Thomas invariants

We determine the structure of certain moduli spaces of ideal sheaves by generalizing an earlier result of the first author. As applications, we compute the (virtual) Hodge polynomials of these moduli space, and calculate the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of certain 3-folds with trivial canonical classes.

Ideals of the cohomology rings of Hilbert schemes and their applications

We study the ideals of the rational cohomology ring of the Hilbert scheme X^{[n]} of n points on a smooth projective surface X. As an application, for a large class of smooth quasi-projective surfaces X, we show that every cup product structure constant of H^*(X^{[n]}) is independent of n; moreover, we obtain two sets of ring generators for the cohomology ring H^*(X^{[n]}). Similar results are established for the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology ring of the symmetric product. In particular, we prove a ring isomorphism between H^*(X^{[n]}, C) and H^*_{orb}(X^{[n]}/S_n, C) for a large class of smooth quasi-projective surfaces with numerically trivial canonical class.

Gromov-Witten invariants of the Hilbert scheme of 3-points on P^2

Using obstruction bundles, composition law and the localization formula, we compute certain 3-point genus-0 Gromov-Witten invariants of the Hilbert scheme of 3-points on the complex projective plane. Our results partially verify Ruan's conjecture about quantum corrections for this Hilbert scheme.

Hilbert schemes, integrable hierarchies, and Gromov-Witten theory

Various equivariant intersection numbers on Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane are computed, some of which are organized into tau-functions of 2-Toda hierarchies. A correspondence between the equivariant intersection on Hilbert schemes and stationary Gromov-Witten theory is established.

Hilbert schemes and W algebras

We construct geometrically the generating fields of a W algebra which acts irreducibly on the direct sum of the cohomology rings of the Hilbert schemes of n points on a projective surface for all n. We compute explicitly the commutators among a set of linear basis elements of the W algebra, and identify this algebra with a $W_{1+\infty}$-type algebra. A precise formula of certain Chern character operators, which is essential for the construction of the W algebra, is established in terms of the Heisenberg algebra generators. In addition, these Chern character operators are proved to be the zero-modes of vertex operators.

On blowup formulae for the S-duality conjecture of Vafa and Witten

This is the first part of two papers. In this part, we prove the blowup formulae for virtual Hodge polynomials of Gieseker moduli spaces of rank-2 stable sheaves and Uhlenbeck compactification spaces over algebraic surfaces. In particular, we verify the blowup formulae for the S-duality conjecture of Vafa-Witten, i.e. the blowup formulae for the Euler numbers of instanton moduli spaces over algebraic surfaces.

Birational Models of the Moduli Spaces of Stable Vector Bundles over Curves

We give a method to construct stable vector bundles whose rank divides the degree over curves of genus bigger than one. The method complements the one given by Newstead. Finally, we make some systematic remarks and observations in connection with rationality of moduli spaces of stable vector bundles.

Variation of the Gieseker and Uhlenbeck Compactifications

In this article, we study the variation of the Gieseker and Uhlenbeck compactifications of the moduli spaces of Mumford-Takemoto stable vector bundles of rank 2 by changing polarizations. Some {\it canonical} rational morphisms among the Gieseker compactifications are proved to exist and their fibers are studied. As a consequence of studying the morphisms from the Gieseker compactifications to the Uhlebeck compactifications, we show that there is an everywhere-defined {\it canonical} algebraic map between two adjacent Uhlenbeck compactifications which restricts to the identity on some Zariski open subset.
