Parallel Time-Band Mixing with Learned Observation-Adding for Robust ASR Front-Ends

Speech enhancement is often used as a front-end for robust ASR, yet recurrent temporal and cross-band modules introduce sequential dependencies that reduce parallel efficiency. In this paper, we present a sequence-parallel band-split enhancement front-end built on a Parallel Time-Band Mixer (PTBM) block that eliminates within-block recurrent unrolling. PTBM integrates intra-band temporal mixing and per-frame cross-band attention within a unified parallel architecture, enabling efficient contextual modeling across both time and frequency dimensions. The system retains the mask-plus-residual reconstruction interface and introduces learned Observation-Adding (LOA) to suppress ASR-sensitive artifacts without development-set tuning. Experiments on DNS Challenge and CHiME-4 with frozen Whisper back-ends show that the proposed front-end consistently reduces word error rate relative to recurrent band-split baselines while requiring only 0.96 M parameters and 0.58 GMAC/s for the front-end network.

Secure Wireless Information Transfer and Energy Harvesting in HAPS-Based Network

High-altitude platform station (HAPS) serves as a promising enabler for wide-area connectivity of low-power wireless devices, particularly in remote and underserved regions. However, the strong line-of-sight characteristics of HAPS links increase the risk of eavesdropping, while the limited energy budget of ground devices remains a major operational constraint. In this work, we propose a secure wireless information and energy harvesting framework for HAPS-based networks in the presence of spatially distributed eavesdroppers. The proposed system integrates friendly jamming and power transfer nodes equipped with null-steering capability antennas, such that they not only degrade the reception quality at eavesdroppers but also act as additional radio-frequency energy sources for legitimate users. A time-switching wireless information and power transfer architecture is adopted at the user side. Under this framework, we derive tractable expressions for the joint rate-energy coverage and the average secrecy rate using stochastic geometry tools. Numerical and Monte Carlo results validate the developed analysis and reveal key design trade-offs among the time allocation factor, null-steering-zone radius around each user, and jammer transmit power. In particular, the results show that properly coordinated null-steering jamming can simultaneously support secure communication and adequate wireless power transfer, while an appropriate choice of system parameters, such as time allocation factor and jamming power, is required to balance harvested energy, communication reliability, and secrecy performance.

Impact of Position Uncertainty on the Secrecy Performance of Pinching Antenna Systems

This paper investigates the secrecy performance of pinching-antenna systems (PAS) under practical pinching-position activation uncertainty. By dynamically selecting the radiation point along a dielectric waveguide, PAS enables low-cost spatial reconfigurability and enhanced secure transmission. Unlike existing studies that assume ideal activation control, we account for spatial inaccuracies caused by hardware limitations and environmental perturbations, which induce statistical dependence between the legitimate and eavesdropping channels. To characterize this uncertainty-induced dependence, PAS-specific marginal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distributions are derived, and a Gaussian copula is employed as a tractable representation of the resulting joint SNR distribution, enabling the derivation of approximate expressions for the secrecy outage probability. Simulation results validate the theoretical findings and demonstrate that PAS retains robust secrecy performance compared with conventional fixed-antenna systems, even in the presence of activation uncertainty.

PASS-Assisted RSMA under Imperfect SIC: Joint Antenna Activation and Resource Allocation

The performance of rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) can be severely affected by imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC) in practical wireless systems. This paper investigates a downlink pinching antenna system (PASS)-assisted RSMA network under imperfect SIC, where residual common-stream interference is explicitly incorporated into private-stream decoding. To improve user fairness, a max-min rate optimization problem is formulated through the joint design of antenna activation, common-rate allocation, and power allocation. The resulting mixed-integer non-convex problem is addressed using a two-stage framework that combines greedy channel-aware antenna activation with successive convex approximation (SCA)-based resource allocation. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework in improving fairness under imperfect SIC.

Pinching Antenna System-Assisted Hybrid AirComp-NOMA Uplink: Joint Precoding and Antenna Placement Optimization

This paper studies a pinching antenna system (PAS)-assisted hybrid uplink architecture that integrates over-the-air computation (AirComp) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to simultaneously support distributed data aggregation and individual communication services. A base station with a dielectric waveguide hosting multiple pinching antennas receives signals from AirComp and NOMA users over shared time-frequency resources. To assess joint computation-communication performance, a hybrid metric combining the AirComp computation rate and the NOMA sum rate is proposed. Based on this metric, a joint optimization problem is formulated to maximize the hybrid rate by optimizing user transmit precoding, receive combining, and antenna deployment, subject to power, quality-of-service, and aggregation accuracy constraints. An alternating optimization framework is developed to solve the resulting non-convex problem. Numerical results show that the proposed design achieves significant performance gains over several benchmark schemes.

Improving SAGIN Resilience to Jamming with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

This study investigates the anti-jamming space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) scenario wherein a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is deployed on a fixed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to counteract malevolent jamming attacks. In contrast to existing research, in this paper, we consider that a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite is sending the signal to the user on the ground in the presence of jamming from a Geostationary Equatorial Orbit (GEO) satellite side. We aim to maximize the signal-to-jamming plus noise ratio (SJNR) by optimizing the RIS beamforming and transmit power of the LEO satellite. Assuming the availability of global channel state information (CSI) at the RIS, we propose alternating optimization (AO) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) techniques to address the complexity. Simulation results show that the optimization schemes lead to considerable performance improvements. The results also indicate that, given the high jamming power and the relatively small number of RIS elements, deploying the RIS on UAVs near the user is more effective in mitigating the impact of jamming interferers.

Surface EMG-Based Inter-Session/Inter-Subject Gesture Recognition by Leveraging Lightweight All-ConvNet and Transfer Learning

Gesture recognition using low-resolution instantaneous HD-sEMG images opens up new avenues for the development of more fluid and natural muscle-computer interfaces. However, the data variability between inter-session and inter-subject scenarios presents a great challenge. The existing approaches employed very large and complex deep ConvNet or 2SRNN-based domain adaptation methods to approximate the distribution shift caused by these inter-session and inter-subject data variability. Hence, these methods also require learning over millions of training parameters and a large pre-trained and target domain dataset in both the pre-training and adaptation stages. As a result, it makes high-end resource-bounded and computationally very expensive for deployment in real-time applications. To overcome this problem, we propose a lightweight All-ConvNet+TL model that leverages lightweight All-ConvNet and transfer learning (TL) for the enhancement of inter-session and inter-subject gesture recognition performance. The All-ConvNet+TL model consists solely of convolutional layers, a simple yet efficient framework for learning invariant and discriminative representations to address the distribution shifts caused by inter-session and inter-subject data variability. Experiments on four datasets demonstrate that our proposed methods outperform the most complex existing approaches by a large margin and achieve state-of-the-art results on inter-session and inter-subject scenarios and perform on par or competitively on intra-session gesture recognition. These performance gaps increase even more when a tiny amount (e.g., a single trial) of data is available on the target domain for adaptation. These outstanding experimental results provide evidence that the current state-of-the-art models may be overparameterized for sEMG-based inter-session and inter-subject gesture recognition tasks.

Terahertz User-Centric Clustering in the Presence of Beam Misalignment

Beam misalignment is one of the main challenges for the design of reliable wireless systems in terahertz (THz) bands. This paper investigates how to apply user-centric base station (BS) clustering as a valuable add-on in THz networks. In particular, to reduce the impact of beam misalignment, a user-centric BS clustering design that provides multi-connectivity via BS cooperation is investigated. The coverage probability is derived by leveraging an accurate approximation of the aggregate interference distribution that captures the effect of beam misalignment and THz fading. The numerical results reveal the impact of beam misalignment with respect to crucial link parameters, such as the transmitter's beam width and the serving cluster size, demonstrating that user-centric BS clustering is a promising enabler of THz networks.

Improvising Age Verification Technologies in Canada: Technical, Regulatory and Social Dynamics

Age verification, which is a mandatory legal requirement for delivering certain age-appropriate services or products, has recently been emphasized around the globe to ensure online safety for children. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has facilitated the recent development of some cutting-edge age-verification technologies, particularly using biometrics. However, successful deployment and mass acceptance of these technologies are significantly dependent on the corresponding socio-economic and regulatory context. This paper reviews such key dynamics for improvising age-verification technologies in Canada. It is particularly essential for such technologies to be inclusive, transparent, adaptable, privacy-preserving, and secure. Effective collaboration between academia, government, and industry entities can help to meet the growing demands for age-verification services in Canada while maintaining a user-centric approach.

RIS-aided secure communications over Fisher-Snedecor $\mathcal{F}$ Fading Channels

\textcolor{blue}{In} this paper, we investigate the performance of physical layer security (PLS) over reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-aided wireless communication systems, where all fading channels are modeled with Fisher-Snedecor $\mathcal{F}$ distribution. Specifically, we consider a RIS with $N$ reflecting elements between the transmitter and the legitimate receiver to develop a smart environment and also meliorate secure communications. In this regard, we derive the closed-form expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and average secrecy capacity (ASC). \textcolor{blue}{We also analyze the asymptotic behaviour of the SOP and ASC by exploiting the residue approach}. Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation results are provided throughout to validate the correctness of the developed analytical results, showing that considering RIS in wireless communication systems has constructive effects on the secrecy performance.

The Impact of Side Information on Physical Layer Security under Correlated Fading Channels

In this paper, we investigate the impact of side information (SI) on the performance of physical layer security (PLS) under correlated fading channels. By considering non-causally known SI at the transmitter and exploiting the copula technique to describe the fading correlation, we derive closed-from expressions for the average secrecy capacity (ASC) and secrecy outage probability (SOP) under positive/negative dependence conditions. We indicate that considering such knowledge at the transmitter is beneficial for system performance and ensures reliable communication with higher rates, as it improves the SOP and brings higher values of the ASC.

Performance Analysis over Correlated/Independent Fisher-Snedecor F Fading Multi-User Channels

In this paper, we investigate the impact of correlated fading on the performance of wireless multiple access channels (MAC) in the presence and absence of side information (SI) at transmitters, where the fading coefficients are modeled according to the Fisher-Snedecor F distribution. Specifically, we represent two scenarios: (i) clean MAC (i.e, without SI at transmitters), (ii) doubly dirty MAC (i.e., with the non-causally known SI at transmitters). For both system models, we derive the closedform expressions of the outage probability (OP) as well as the average capacity (AC) under independent fading conditions. Besides, exploiting copula theory, we obtain the exact analytical expressions for the OP and the AC under positive dependence fading conditions in both considered models. Finally, the validity of the analytical results is illustrated numerically.

Copula-Based Modeling of RIS-Assisted Communications: Outage Probability Analysis

Statistical characterization of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assistedcommunications in the presence of phase noise is an important open issue. In this letter, we exploit the concept of copula modeling to capture the non-standard dependence features that appear due to the presence of discrete phase noise. In particular,we consider the outage probability of RIS systems in Rayleighfading channels and provide joint distributions to characterize the dependencies due to the use of finite resolution phase shifters at the RIS. Numerical assessments confirm the validity of closed-form expressions of the outage probability and motivate the use of bivariate copula for further RIS studies.

Robust Beamforming for Enhancing Security in Multibeam Satellite Systems

This paper proposes a robust beamforming (BF) scheme to enhance physical layer security (PLS) of the downlink of a multibeam satellite system in the presence of either uncoordinated or coordinated eavesdroppers (Eves). Specifically, with knowing only the approximate locations of the Eves, we aim at maximizing the worst-case achievable secrecy rate (ASR) of the legitimate user (LU), subject to the constraints of per-antenna transmit power and quality of service (QoS) requirement of the LU. Since the optimization problem is non-convex, we first adopt the discretization method to deal with the unknown regions of the Eves and then exploit the log-sum-exp function to approximate the objective function. Afterwards, a BF method joint alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) with Dinkelbach iteration is presented to solve this non-convex problem. Finally, simulation results verify that our robust BF algorithm can effectively improve the security of multibeam satellite systems.

Outage Constrained Robust Secure Beamforming in Cognitive Satellite-Aerial Networks

This paper proposes a robust beamforming scheme to enhance the physical layer security (PLS) of multicast transmission in a cognitive satellite and aerial network (CSAN) operating in the millimeter wave frequency band. Based on imperfect channel state information (CSI) of both eavesdroppers (Eves) and primary users (PUs), we maximize the minimum achievable secrecy rate (ASR) of the secondary users (SUs) in the aerial network under the constraints of the interference to the PUs in the satellite network, the quality of service (QoS) requirements of the SUs and per-antenna power budget of the aerial platform. To tackle this mathematically intractable problem, we first introduce an auxiliary variable and outage constraints to simplify the complex objective function. We then convert the non-convex outage constraints into deterministic forms and adopt penalty function approach to obtain a semi-definite problem such that it can be solved in an iterative fashion. Finally, simulation results show that with the transmit power increase, the minimal ASR of SUs obtained from the proposed BF scheme well approximate the optimal value.

TSTNN: Two-stage Transformer based Neural Network for Speech Enhancement in the Time Domain

In this paper, we propose a transformer-based architecture, called two-stage transformer neural network (TSTNN) for end-to-end speech denoising in the time domain. The proposed model is composed of an encoder, a two-stage transformer module (TSTM), a masking module and a decoder. The encoder maps input noisy speech into feature representation. The TSTM exploits four stacked two-stage transformer blocks to efficiently extract local and global information from the encoder output stage by stage. The masking module creates a mask which will be multiplied with the encoder output. Finally, the decoder uses the masked encoder feature to reconstruct the enhanced speech. Experimental results on the benchmark dataset show that the TSTNN outperforms most state-of-the-art models in time or frequency domain while having significantly lower model complexity.

Atomic Norm Based Localization of Far-Field and Near-Field Signals with Generalized Symmetric Arrays

Most localization methods for mixed far-field (FF) and near-field (NF) sources are based on uniform linear array (ULA) rather than sparse linear array (SLA). In this paper, we propose a localization method for mixed FF and NF sources based on the generalized symmetric linear arrays, which include ULAs, Cantor array, Fractal array and many other SLAs. Our method consists of two steps. In the first step, the high-order statistics of the array output is exploited to increase the degree of freedom. Then the direction-of-arrivals (DOAs) of the FF and NF sources are jointly estimated by using the recently proposed atomic norm minimization (ANM), which belongs to the gridless super-resolution method since the discretization of the parameter space is not required. In the second step, the ranges are given by MUSIC-like one-dimensional searching. Simulations results are provided to demonstrate the advantages of our method.

Bit Error Rate Analysis for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces with Phase Errors

In this paper, we analyze the error probability of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-enabled communication systems with quantized channel phase compensation over Rayleigh fading channels. The probability density and characteristic functions of the received signal amplitude are derive dand used to compute exact expressions for the bit error rate(BER). The resulting expressions are general, as they hold for an arbitrary number of reflecting elements N, and quantization levels, L. We introduce an exact asymptotic analysis in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, from which we demonstrate, in particular, that the diversity order is N/2 when L=2 and N when L >2. The theoretical frameworks and findings are validated with the aid of Monte Carlo simulation.
