How does economic policy uncertainty comove with stock markets: New evidence from symmetric thermal optimal path method

We revisit the dynamic relationship between domestic economic policy uncertainty and stock markets using the symmetric thermal optimal path (TOPS) method. We observe different interaction patterns in emerging and developed markets. Economic policy uncertainty drives the stock market in China, while stock markets play a leading role in the UK and the US. Meanwhile, the lead-lag relationship of the three countries reacts significantly to extreme events. Our findings have important implications for investors and policy makers.

Highway freight transportation diversity of cities based on radiation models

Using a unique data set containing about 15.06 million truck transportation records in five months, we investigate the highway freight transportation diversity of 338 Chinese cities based on the truck transportation probability $p_{ij}$ from one city to the other. The transportation probabilities are calculated from the radiation model based on the geographic distance and its cost-based version based on the driving distance as the proxy of cost. For each model, we consider both the population and the gross domestic product, and find quantitatively very similar results. We find that the transportation probabilities have nice power-law tails with the tail exponents close to 0.5 for all the models. The two transportation probabilities in each model fall around the diagonal $p_{ij}=p_{ji}$ but are often not the same. In addition, the corresponding transportation probabilities calculated from the raw radiation model and the cost-based radiation model also fluctuate around the diagonal $p_{ij}^{\rm{geo}}=p_{ij}^{\rm{cost}}$. We calculate four sets of highway truck transportation diversity according to the four sets of transportation probabilities that are found to be close to each other for each city pair. Further, it is found that the population, the gross domestic product, the in-flux, and the out-flux scale as power laws with respect to the transportation diversity in the raw and cost-based radiation models. It implies that a more developed city usually has higher diversity in highway truck transportation, which reflects the fact that a more developed city usually has a more diverse economic structure.

Visibility graph analysis of economy policy uncertainty indices

Uncertainty plays an important role in the global economy. In this paper, the economic policy uncertainty (EPU) indices of the United States and China are selected as the proxy variable corresponding to the uncertainty of national economic policy. By adopting the visibility graph algorithm, the four economic policy uncertainty indices of the United States and China are mapped into complex networks, and the topological properties of the corresponding networks are studied. The Hurst exponents of all the four indices are within $\left[0.5,1\right]$, which implies that the economic policy uncertainty is persistent. The degree distributions of the EPU networks have power-law tails and are thus scale-free. The average clustering coefficients of the four EPU networks are high and close to each other, while these networks exhibit weak assortative mixing. We also find that the EPU network in United States based on daily data shows the small-world feature since the average shortest path length increases logarithmically with the network size such that $L\left(N\right)=0.626\ln N+0.405$. Our research highlights the possibility to study the EPU from the view angle of complex networks.

The role of global economic policy uncertainty in predicting crude oil futures volatility: Evidence from a two-factor GARCH-MIDAS model

This paper aims to examine whether the global economic policy uncertainty (GEPU) and uncertainty changes have different impacts on crude oil futures volatility. We establish single-factor and two-factor models under the GARCH-MIDAS framework to investigate the predictive power of GEPU and GEPU changes excluding and including realized volatility. The findings show that the models with rolling-window specification perform better than those with fixed-span specification. For single-factor models, the GEPU index and its changes, as well as realized volatility, are consistent effective factors in predicting the volatility of crude oil futures. Specially, GEPU changes have stronger predictive power than the GEPU index. For two-factor models, GEPU is not an effective forecast factor for the volatility of WTI crude oil futures or Brent crude oil futures. The two-factor model with GEPU changes contains more information and exhibits stronger forecasting ability for crude oil futures market volatility than the single-factor models. The GEPU changes are indeed the main source of long-term volatility of the crude oil futures.

Information flow networks of Chinese stock market sectors

Transfer entropy measures the strength and direction of information flow between different time series. We study the information flow networks of the Chinese stock market and identify important sectors and information flow paths. This paper uses the daily closing price data of the 28 level-1 sectors from Shenyin \& Wanguo Securities ranging from 2000 to 2017 to study the information transmission between different sectors. We construct information flow networks with the sectors as the nodes and the transfer entropy between them as the corresponding edges. Then we adopt the maximum spanning arborescence (MSA) to extracting important information flows and the hierarchical structure of the networks. We find that, during the whole sample period, the \textit{composite} sector is an information source of the whole stock market, while the \textit{non-bank financial} sector is the information sink. We also find that the \textit{non-bank finance}, \textit{bank}, \textit{computer}, \textit{media}, \textit{real estate}, \textit{medical biology} and \textit{non-ferrous metals} sectors appear as high-degree root nodes in the outgoing and incoming information flow MSAs. Especially, the \textit{non-bank finance} and \textit{bank} sectors have significantly high degrees after 2008 in the outgoing information flow networks. We uncover how stock market turmoils affect the structure of the MSAs. Finally, we reveal the specificity of information source and sink sectors and make a conclusion that the root node sector as the information sink of the incoming information flow networks. Overall, our analyses show that the structure of information flow networks changes with time and the market exhibits a sector rotation phenomenon. Our work has important implications for market participants and policy makers in managing market risks and controlling the contagion of risks.

Information transfer between stock market sectors: A comparison between the USA and China

Information diffusion within financial markets plays a crucial role in the process of price formation and the propagation of sentiment and risk. We perform a comparative analysis of information transfer between industry sectors of the Chinese and the USA stock markets, using daily sector indices for the period from 2000 to 2017. The information flow from one sector to another is measured by the transfer entropy of the daily returns of the two sector indices. We find that the most active sector in information exchange (i.e., the largest total information inflow and outflow) is the {\textit{non-bank financial}} sector in the Chinese market and the {\textit{technology}} sector in the USA market. This is consistent with the role of the non-bank sector in corporate financing in China and the impact of technological innovation in the USA. In each market, the most active sector is also the largest information sink that has the largest information inflow (i.e., inflow minus outflow). In contrast, we identify that the main information source is the {\textit{bank}} sector in the Chinese market and the {\textit{energy}} sector in the USA market. In the case of China, this is due to the importance of net bank lending as a signal of corporate activity and the role of energy pricing in affecting corporate profitability. There are sectors such as the {\textit{real estate}} sector that could be an information sink in one market but an information source in the other, showing the complex behavior of different markets. Overall, these findings show that stock markets are more synchronized, or ordered, during periods of turmoil than during periods of stability.

Evolving efficiency and robustness of global oil trade networks

As a vital strategic resource, oil has an essential influence on the world economy, diplomacy and military development. Using oil trade data to dynamically monitor and warn about international trade risks is an urgent need. Based on the UN Comtrade data from 1988 to 2017, we construct unweighted and weighted global oil trade networks (OTNs). Complex network theories have some advantages in analyzing global oil trade as a system with numerous economies and complicated relationships. This paper establishes a trading-based network model for global oil trade to study the evolving efficiency, criticality and robustness of economies and the relationships between oil trade partners. The results show that for unweighted OTNs, the efficiency of oil flows gradually increases with growing complexity of the OTNs, and the weighted efficiency indicators are more capable of highlighting the impact of major events on the OTNs. The identified critical economies and trade relationships have more important strategic significance in the real market. The simulated deliberate attacks corresponding to national bankruptcy, trade blockade, and economic sanctions have a more significant impact on the robustness than random attacks. When the economies are promoting high-quality economic development, and continuously enhancing positions in the OTN, more attention needs be paid to the identified critical economies and trade relationships. To conclude, some suggestions for application are given according to the results.

Predicting tail events in a RIA-EVT-Copula framework

Predicting the occurrence of tail events is of great importance in financial risk management. By employing the method of peak-over-threshold (POT) to identify the financial extremes, we perform a recurrence interval analysis (RIA) on these extremes. We find that the waiting time between consecutive extremes (recurrence interval) follow a $q$-exponential distribution and the sizes of extremes above the thresholds (exceeding size) conform to a generalized Pareto distribution. We also find that there is a significant correlation between recurrence intervals and exceeding sizes. We thus model the joint distribution of recurrence intervals and exceeding sizes through connecting the two corresponding marginal distributions with the Frank and AMH copula functions, and apply this joint distribution to estimate the hazard probability to observe another extreme in $Δt$ time since the last extreme happened $t$ time ago. Furthermore, an extreme predicting model based on RIA-EVT-Copula is proposed by applying a decision-making algorithm on the hazard probability. Both in-sample and out-of-sample tests reveal that this new extreme forecasting framework has better performance in prediction comparing with the forecasting model based on the hazard probability only estimated from the distribution of recurrence intervals. Our results not only shed a new light on understanding the occurring pattern of extremes in financial markets, but also improve the accuracy to predict financial extremes for risk management.

Sector connectedness in the Chinese stock markets

Uncovering the risk transmitting path within economic sectors in China is crucial for understanding the stability of the Chinese economic system, especially under the current situation of the China-US trade conflicts. In this paper, we try to uncover the risk spreading channels by means of volatility spillovers within the Chinese sectors using stock market data. By applying the generalized variance decomposition framework based on the VAR model and the rolling window approach, a set of connectedness matrices is obtained to reveal the overall and dynamic spillovers within sectors. It is found that 17 sectors (mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, utilities, and so on) are risk transmitters and 11 sectors (national defence, bank, non-bank finance, and so on) are risk takers during the whole period. During the periods with the extreme risk events (the global financial crisis, the Chinese interbank liquidity crisis, the Chinese stock market plunge, and the China-US trade war), we observe that the connectedness measures significantly increase and the financial sectors play a buffer role in stabilizing the economic system. The robust tests suggest that our results are not sensitive to the changes of model parameters. Our results not only uncover the spillover effects within the Chinese sectors, but also highlight the deep understanding of the risk contagion patterns in the Chinese stock markets.

A global economic policy uncertainty index from principal component analysis

This paper constructs a global economic policy uncertainty index through the principal component analysis of the economic policy uncertainty indices for twenty primary economies around the world. We find that the PCA-based global economic policy uncertainty index is a good proxy for the economic policy uncertainty on a global scale, which is quite consistent with the GDP-weighted global economic policy uncertainty index. The PCA-based economic policy uncertainty index is found to be positively related with the volatility and correlation of the global financial market, which indicates that the stocks are more volatile and correlated when the global economic policy uncertainty is higher. The PCA-based global economic policy uncertainty index performs slightly better because the relationship between the PCA-based uncertainty and market volatility and correlation is more significant.

Comparative analysis of layered structures in empirical investor networks and cellphone communication networks

Empirical investor networks (EIN) proposed by \cite{Ozsoylev-Walden-Yavuz-Bildik-2014-RFS} are assumed to capture the information spreading path among investors. Here, we perform a comparative analysis between the EIN and the cellphone communication networks (CN) to test whether EIN is an information exchanging network from the perspective of the layer structures of ego networks. We employ two clustering algorithms ($k$-means algorithm and $H/T$ break algorithm) to detect the layer structures for each node in both networks. We find that the nodes in both networks can be clustered into two groups, one that has a layer structure similar to the theoretical Dunbar Circle corresponding to that the alters in ego networks exhibit a four-layer hierarchical structure with the cumulative number of 5, 15, 50 and 150 from the inner layer to the outer layer, and the other one having an additional inner layer with about 2 alters compared with the Dunbar Circle. We also find that the scale ratios, which are estimated based on the unique parameters in the theoretical model of layer structures \citep{Tamarit-Cuesta-Dunbar-Sanchez-2018-PNAS}, conform to a log-normal distribution for both networks. Our results not only deepen our understanding on the topological structures of EIN, but also provide empirical evidence of the channels of information diffusion among investors.

Cross-shareholding networks and stock price synchronicity: Evidence from China

This paper investigates the effect of cross-shareholding on stock price synchronicity, as a measure of price informativeness, of the listed firms in the Chinese stock market. We gauge firms' levels of cross-shareholdings in terms of centrality in the cross-shareholding network. It is confirmed that it is through a noise-reducing process that cross-shareholding promotes price synchronicity and reduces price delay. More importantly, this effect on price informativeness is pronounced for large firms and in the periods of market downturns. Overall, our analyses provide insights into the relation between the ownership structure and price informativeness.

Statistical properties of user activity fluctuations in virtual worlds

User activity fluctuations reflect the performance of online society. We investigate the statistical properties of 1-min user activity time series of simultaneously online users inhabited in 95 independent virtual worlds. The number of online users exhibits clear intraday and weekly patterns due to human's circadian rhythms and week cycles. Statistical analysis shows that the distribution of absolute activity fluctuations has a power-law tail for 44 virtual worlds with an average tail exponent close to 2.15. The partition function approach unveils that the absolute activity fluctuations possess multifractal features for all the 95 virtual worlds. For the sample of 44 virtual worlds with power-law tailed distributions of the absolute activity fluctuations, the width of singularity $Δα$ is negatively correlated with the maximum activity ($p$-value=0.070) and the time to the maximum activity ($p$-value=0.010). The negative correlations are not observed for neither the other 51 virtual worlds nor the whole sample of the 95 virtual worlds. In addition, numerical experiments indicate that both temporal structure and large fluctuations have influence on the multifractal spectrum. We also find that the temporal structure has stronger impact on the singularity width than large fluctuations.

Non-Poisson donation behaviors in virtual worlds

Similar to charitable giving in real world, donation behaviors play an important role in the complex interactions among individuals in virtual worlds. However, it is not clear if the donation process is random or not. We investigate this problem using detailed data from parallel virtual worlds adhered to a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. We find that the inter-donation durations follow power-law-tailed distributions distributed with an average tail exponent close to 1.91, have strong long-range correlations, and possess multifractal features. These findings indicate that the donation process is non-Poissonian, which has potential worth in modeling the complicated individuals behaviors in virtual worlds.

Temporal and spatial correlation patterns of air pollutants in Chinese cities

As a huge threat to the public health, China's air pollution has attracted extensive attention and continues to grow in tandem with the economy. Although the real-time air quality report can be utilized to update our knowledge on air quality, questions about how pollutants evolve across time and how pollutants are spatially correlated still remain a puzzle. In view of this point, we adopt the PMFG network method to analyze the six pollutants' hourly data in 350 Chinese cities in an attempt to find out how these pollutants are correlated temporally and spatially. In terms of time dimension, the results indicate that, except for O$_3$, the pollutants have a common feature of the strong intraday patterns of which the daily variations are composed of two contraction periods and two expansion periods. Besides, all the time series of the six pollutants possess strong long-term correlations, and this temporal memory effect helps to explain why smoggy days are always followed by one after another. In terms of space dimension, the correlation structure shows that O$_3$ is characterized by the highest spatial connections. The PMFGs reveal the relationship between this spatial correlation and provincial administrative divisions by filtering the hierarchical structure in the correlation matrix and refining the cliques as the tinny spatial clusters. Finally, we check the stability of the correlation structure and conclude that, except for PM$_{10}$ and O$_3$, the other pollutants have an overall stable correlation, and all pollutants have a slight trend to become more divergent in space. These results not only enhance our understanding of the air pollutants' evolutionary process, but also shed lights on the application of complex network methods into geographic issues.

Direct determination approach for the multifractal detrending moving average analysis

In the canonical framework, we propose an alternative approach for the multifractal analysis based on the detrending moving average method (MF-DMA). We define a canonical measure such that the multifractal mass exponent $τ(q)$ is related to the partition function and the multifractal spectrum $f(α)$ can be directly determined. The performances of the direct determination approach and the traditional approach of the MF-DMA are compared based on three synthetic multifractal and monofractal measures generated from the one-dimensional $p$-model, the two-dimensional $p$-model and the fractional Brownian motions. We find that both approaches have comparable performances to unveil the fractal and multifractal nature. In other words, without loss of accuracy, the multifractal spectrum $f(α)$ can be directly determined using the new approach with less computation cost. We also apply the new MF-DMA approach to the volatility time series of stock prices and confirm the presence of multifractality.

Analytic degree distributions of horizontal visibility graphs mapped from unrelated random series and multifractal binomial measures

Complex network is not only a powerful tool for the analysis of complex system, but also a promising way to analyze time series. The algorithm of horizontal visibility graph (HVG) maps time series into graphs, whose degree distributions are numerically and analytically investigated for certain time series. We derive the degree distributions of HVGs through an iterative construction process of HVGs. The degree distributions of the HVG and the directed HVG for random series are derived to be exponential, which confirms the analytical results from other methods. We also obtained the analytical expressions of degree distributions of HVGs and in-degree and out-degree distributions of directed HVGs transformed from multifractal binomial measures, which agree excellently with numerical simulations.

Time series classification based on triadic time series motifs

It is of great significance to identify the characteristics of time series to qualify their similarity. We define six types of triadic time-series motifs and investigate the motif occurrence profiles extracted from logistic map, chaotic logistic map, chaotic Henon map, chaotic Ikeda map, hyperchaotic generalized Henon map and hyperchaotic folded-tower map. Based on the similarity of motif profiles, we further propose to estimate the similarity coefficients between different time series and classify these time series with high accuracy. We further apply the motif analysis method to the UCR Time Series Classification Archive and provide evidence of good classification ability for some data sets. Our analysis shows that the proposed triadic time series motif analysis performs better than the classic dynamic time wrapping method in classifying time series for certain data sets investigated in this work.
