Relativistic symmetry breaking in light kaonic nuclei

As the experimental data from kaonic atoms and $K^{-}N$ scatterings imply that the $K^{-}$-nucleon interaction is strongly attractive at saturation density, there is a possibility to form $K^{-}$-nuclear bound states or kaonic nuclei. In this work, we investigate the ground-state properties of the light kaonic nuclei with the relativistic mean field theory. It is found that the strong attraction between $K^{-}$ and nucleons reshapes the scalar and vector meson fields, leading to the remarkable enhancement of the nuclear density in the interior of light kaonic nuclei and the manifest shift of the single-nucleon energy spectra and magic numbers therein. As a consequence, the pseudospin symmetry is shown to be violated together with enlarged spin-orbit splittings in these kaonic nuclei.

Effects of fermionic dark matter on properties of neutron stars

By assuming that only gravitation exists between dark matter (DM) and normal matter (NM), we study the effects of fermionic DM on the properties of neutron stars using the two-fluid Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff formalism. It is found that the mass-radius relationship of the DM admixed neutron stars (DANSs) depends sensitively on the mass of DM candidates, the amount of DM, and interactions among DM candidates. The existence of DM in DANSs results in a spread of mass-radius relationships that cannot be interpreted with a unique equilibrium sequence. In some cases, the DM distribution can surpass the NM distribution to form DM halo. In particular, it is favorable to form an explicit DM halo, provided the repulsion of DM exists. It is interesting to find that the difference in particle number density distributions in DANSs and consequently in star radii caused by various density dependencies of nuclear symmetry energy tends to disappear as long as the repulsion of accumulated DM is sufficient. These phenomena indicate that the admixture of DM in neutron stars can significantly affect the astrophysical extraction of nuclear equation of state by virtue of neutron star measurements. In addition, the effect of the DM admixture on the star maximum mass is also investigated.

Rearrangements of interacting Fermi liquids

The stability condition of Landau Fermi liquid theory may be broken when the interaction between particles is strong enough. In this case, the ground state is reconstructed to have a particle distribution different from the Fermi-step function. For specific instances, one case with the vector boson exchange and another with the relativistic heavy-ion collision are taken into consideration. With the vector boson exchange, we find that the relative weak interaction strength can lead to the ground-state rearrangement as long as the fermion mass is large enough. It is found that the relativistic heavy-ion collision may also cause the ground-state rearrangement, affecting the statistics of the collision system.

Water Transport through Carbon Nanotubes with the Radial Breathing Mode

Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the water permeation across the single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) with the radial breathing mode (RBM) vibration. It is found that the RBM can play a significant role in breaking hydrogen bonds of the water chain, accordingly increasing the net flux dramatically, and reducing drastically the average number of water molecules inside the tube with the frequency ranging from 5000 to 11000 GHz, while far away from this frequency region the transport properties of water molecules are almost unaffected by the RBM. This phenomenon can be understood as the resonant response of the water molecule chain to the RBM. Our findings are expected to be helpful for the design of high-flux nanochannels and the understanding of biological activities especially the water channelling.

Liquid-gas phase transition in hot asymmetric nuclear matter with density-dependent relativistic mean-field models

The liquid-gas phase transition in hot asymmetric nuclear matter is studied within density-dependent relativistic mean-field models where the density dependence is introduced according to the Brown-Rho scaling and constrained by available data at low densities and empirical properties of nuclear matter. The critical temperature of the liquid-gas phase transition is obtained to be 15.7 MeV in symmetric nuclear matter falling on the lower edge of the small experimental error bars. In hot asymmetric matter, the boundary of the phase-coexistence region is found to be sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy. The critical pressure and the area of phase-coexistence region increases clearly with the softening of the symmetry energy. The critical temperature of hot asymmetric matter separating the gas phase from the LG coexistence phase is found to be higher for the softer symmetry energy.

Symmetry energy softening in nuclear matter with non-nucleonic constituents

We study the trend of the nuclear symmetry energy in relativistic mean-field models with appearance of the hyperon and quark degrees of freedom at high densities. On the pure hadron level, we focus on the role of $Λ$ hyperons in influencing the symmetry energy both at given fractions and at charge and chemical equilibriums. The softening of the nuclear symmetry energy is observed with the inclusion of the $Λ$ hyperons that suppresses the nucleon fraction. In the phase with the admixture of quarks and hadrons, the equation of state is established on the Gibbs conditions. With the increase of the quark volume fraction in denser and denser matter, the apparent nuclear symmetry energy decreases till to disappear. This softening would have associations with the observations which need detailed discriminations in dense matter with the admixture of new degrees of freedom created by heavy-ion collisions.

Large-mass neutron stars with hyperonization

Within a density-dependent relativistic mean-field model using in-medium meson-hadron coupling constants and meson masses, we explore effects of in-medium hyperon interactions on properties of neutron stars. It is found that the hyperonic constituents in large-mass neutron stars can not be simply ruled out, while the recently measured mass of the millisecond pulsar J1614-2230 can constrain significantly the in-medium hyperon interactions. Moreover, effects of nuclear symmetry energy on hyperonization in neutron stars are also discussed.

Effects of a weakly interacting light U boson on the nuclear equation of state and properties of neutron stars in relativistic models

We investigate the effects of the light vector U-boson that couples weakly to nucleons in relativistic mean-field models on the equation of state and subsequently the consequence in neutron stars. It is analyzed that the U-boson can lead to a much clearer rise of the neutron star maximum mass in models with the much softer equation of state. The inclusion of the U-boson may thus allow the existence of the non-nucleonic degrees of freedom in the interior of large mass neutron stars initiated with the favorably soft EOS of normal nuclear matter. In addition, the sensitive role of the U-boson in the neutron star radius and its relation to the test of the non-Newtonian gravity that is herein addressed by the light U-boson are discussed.

Effects of the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy on properties of superheavy nuclei

Effects of the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy on ground-state properties of superheavy nuclei are studied in the relativistic mean-field theory. It is found that the softening of the symmetry energy plays an important role in the empirical shift [Phys. Rev. C 67, 024309 (2003)] of spherical orbitals in superheavy nuclei. The calculation based on the relativistic mean-field models NL3 and FSUGold supports the double shell closure in $^{292}120$ with the softening of the symmetry energy. In addition, the significant effect of the density dependence of the symmetry energy on the neutron skin thickness in superheavy nuclei are investigated.

Effects of medium-induced $ρ-ω$ meson mixing on the equation of state in isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter

We reexamine effects of the $ρ-ω$ meson mixing mediated by nucleon polarizations on the symmetry energy in isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter. Taking into account the rearrangement term neglected in previous studies by others, we evaluate the $ρ-ω$ mixing angle in a novel way within the Relativistic Mean-Field Models with and without chiral limits. It is found that the symmetry energy is significantly softened at high densities contrary to the finding in earlier studies. As the first step of going beyond the lowest-order calculations, we also solve the RPA equation for the $ρ-ω$ mixing. In this case, it is found that the symmetry energy is not only significantly softened by the $ρ-ω$ mixing at supra-saturation densities, similar to the lowest-order $ρ-ω$ mixing, but interestingly also softened at subsaturation densities. In addition, the softening of the symmetry energy at subsaturation densities can be partly suppressed by the nonlinear self-interaction of the $σ$ meson.

Chiral condensate in nuclear matter with vacuum corrections

Within the relativistic Hartree approach using a Lagrangian with density-dependent parameters respecting the chiral limit, it is found that the vacuum corrections from the nucleon Dirac sea soften the equation of state and favor the chiral symmetry restoration at high densities.

Neutron-skin thickness of finite nuclei in relativistic mean-field models with chiral limits

We study several structure properties of finite nuclei using relativistic mean-field Lagrangians constructed according to the Brown-Rho scaling due to the chiral symmetry restoration at high densities. The models are consistent with current experimental constraints for the equations of state of symmetric matter at both normal and supra-normal densities and of asymmetric matter at sub-saturation densities. It is shown that these models can successfully describe the binding energies and charge radii of finite nuclei. Compared to calculations with usual relativistic mean-field models, these models give a reduced thickness of neutron skin in ^{208}Pb between 0.17 fm and 0.21 fm. The reduction of the predicted neutron skin thickness is found to be due to not only the softening of the symmetry energy but also the scaling property of $ρ$ meson required by the partial restoration of chiral symmetry.

Mean free paths and in-medium scattering cross sections of energetic nucleons in neutron-rich nucleonic matter within the relativistic impulse approximation

The mean free paths and in-medium scattering cross sections of energetic nucleons in neutron-rich nucleonic matter are investigated using the nucleon optical potential obtained within the relativistic impulse approximation with the empirical nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitudes and the nuclear densities obtained in the relativistic mean field model. It is found that the isospin-splitting of nucleon mean free paths, sensitive to the imaginary part of the symmetry potential, changes its sign at certain high kinetic energy. The in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections are analytically and numerically demonstrated to be essentially independent of the isospin asymmetry of the medium and increase linearly with density in the high energy region where the relativistic impulse approximation is applicable.

Equation of state of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter in relativistic mean-field models with chiral limits

Using in-medium hadron properties according to the Brown-Rho scaling due to the chiral symmetry restoration at high densities and considering naturalness of the coupling constants, we have newly constructed several relativistic mean-field Lagrangians with chiral limits. The model parameters are adjusted such that the symmetric part of the resulting equation of state at supra-normal densities is consistent with that required by the collective flow data from high energy heavy-ion reactions, while the resulting density dependence of the symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities agrees with that extracted from the recent isospin diffusion data from intermediate energy heavy-ion reactions. The resulting equations of state have the special feature of being soft at intermediate densities but stiff at high densities naturally. With these constrained equations of state, it is found that the radius of a 1.4$M_\odot$ canonical neutron star is in the range of 11.9 km$\leq$R$\leq$13.1 km, and the maximum neutron star mass is around 2.0$M_\odot$ close to the recent observations.
