Coherent control of a strongly driven silicon vacancy optical transition in diamond

The ability to prepare, optically read out and coherently control single quantum states is a key requirement for quantum information processing. Optically active solid state emitters have emerged as promising candidates with their prospects for on chip integration as quantum nodes and sources of coherent photons for connecting these nodes. Under strongly driving resonant laser field, such quantum emitter can exhibit quantum behavior such as Autler-Townes splitting and Mollow triplet spectrum. Here we demonstrate coherent control of a strongly driven optical transition in silicon vacancy (SiV) center in diamond. Rapid optical detection of photons enabled the observation of time resolved coherent Rabi oscillations and the Mollow triplet from an optical transition of a single SiV defect. Detection with a probing transition further confirmed Autler-Townes splitting generated by a strong laser field. Coherence time of the emitted photons is shown to be comparable to its lifetime and robust under very strong driving laser field, which is promising for generation of indistinguishable photons.

Zeeman splitting via spin-valley-layer coupling in bilayer MoTe2

Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess coupling of spin and valley degrees of freedom, making them promising for spin-valleytronics. ln monolayer TMDs, the emission helicity is locked to the valleys as a consequence of spin-orbit coupling and inversion symmetry breaking, leading to a valley analog of Zeeman effect in presence of out-of-plane magnetic field. As inversion symmetry is recovered in bilayers, the emission helicity should no longer be locked to the valleys. Here we show that Zeeman splitting, however, still persists in bilayers, as a result of an additional degree of freedom viz., the layer pseudospin and spin-valley-layer locking. In contrast to monolayer, Zeeman splitting here exists without lifting valley degeneracy. The degree of circularly polarized photoluminescence can be tuned with magnetic field from $-27\%$ to $27\%$. Our results demonstrate the control of degree of freedom in bilayer with magnetic field, which, together with previous electric field control, makes bilayer a promising platform for spin-valley quantum gates based on magnetoelectric effects.

Generation of heralded entanglement between distant hole spins

Quantum entanglement emerges naturally in interacting quantum systems and plays a central role in quantum information processing. Remarkably, it is possible to generate entanglement even in the absence of direct interactions: provided that which path information is erased, weak spin-state dependent light scattering can be used to project two distant spins onto a maximally entangled state upon detection of a single photon. Even though this approach is necessarily probabilistic, successful generation of entanglement is heralded by the photon detection event. Here, we demonstrate heralded quantum entanglement of two quantum dot heavy-hole spins separated by 5 meters using single-photon interference. Thanks to the long coherence time of hole spins and the efficient spin-photon interface provided by self-assembled quantum dots embedded in leaky microcavity structures, we generate 2300 entangled spin pairs per second, which represents an improvement approaching three orders of magnitude as compared to prior experiments. Delayed two-photon interference scheme we developed allows for efficient verification of quantum correlations. Our results lay the groundwork for the realization of quantum networks in semiconductor nanostructures. Combined with schemes for transferring quantum information to a long-lived memory qubit, fast entanglement generation we demonstrate could also impact quantum repeater architectures.

Observation of quantum jumps of a single quantum dot spin using sub-microsecond single-shot optical readout

Single-shot read-out of individual qubits is typically the slowest process among the elementary single- and two-qubit operations required for quantum information processing. Here, we use resonance fluorescence from a single-electron charged quantum dot to read-out the spin-qubit state in 800 nanoseconds with a fidelity exceeding 80%. Observation of the spin evolution on longer timescales reveals quantum jumps of the spin state: we use the experimentally determined waiting-time distribution to characterize the quantum jumps. Embedding a quantum dot in a photonic nanostructure could be used to enhance the collection efficiency by a factor of 10, enabling single-shot read-out with a fidelity exceeding 97%.

Quantum Teleportation from a Propagating Photon to a Solid-State Spin Qubit

The realization of a quantum interface between a propagating photon used for transmission of quantum information, and a stationary qubit used for storage and manipulation, has long been an outstanding goal in quantum information science. A method for implementing such an interface between dissimilar qubits is quantum teleportation, which has attracted considerable interest not only as a versatile quantum-state-transfer method but also as a quantum computational primitive. Here, we experimentally demonstrate transfer of quantum information carried by a photonic qubit to a quantum dot spin qubit using quantum teleportation. In our experiment, a single photon in a superposition state of two colors -- a photonic qubit is generated using selective resonant excitation of a neutral quantum dot. We achieve an unprecedented degree of indistinguishability of single photons from different quantum dots by using local electric and magnetic field control. To teleport a photonic qubit, we generate an entangled spin-photon state in a second quantum dot located 5 meters away from the first and interfere the photons from the two dots in a Hong-Ou-Mandel set-up. A coincidence detection at the output of the interferometer heralds successful teleportation, which we verify by measuring the resulting spin state after its coherence time is prolonged by an optical spin-echo pulse sequence. The demonstration of successful inter-conversion of photonic and semiconductor spin qubits constitute a major step towards the realization of on-chip quantum networks based on semiconductor nano-structures.

Simultaneous eigenstates of the number-difference operator and a bilinear interaction Hamiltonian derived by solving a complex differential equation

As a continuum work of Bhaumik et al who derived the common eigenvector of the number-difference operator Q and pair-annihilation operator ab (J. Phys. A9 (1976) 1507) we search for the simultaneous eigenvector of Q and (ab-a^{+}b^{+}) by setting up a complex differential equation in the bipartite entangled state representation. The differential equation is then solved in terms of the two-variable Hermite polynomials and the formal hypergeometric functions. The work is also an addendum to Mod. Phys. Lett. A 9 (1994) 1291 by Fan and Klauder, in which the common eigenkets of Q and pair creators are discussed.
