Critical behaviors of the $O(4)$ and $Z(2)$ symmetries in the QCD phase diagram

In this work we have studied the QCD phase structure and critical dynamics related to the 3-$d$ $O(4)$ and $Z(2)$ symmetry universality classes in the two-flavor quark-meson low energy effective theory within the functional renormalization group approach. We have employed the expansion of Chebyshev polynomials to solve the flow equation for the order-parameter potential. The chiral phase transition line of $O(4)$ symmetry in the chiral limit, and the $Z(2)$ line of critical end points related to the explicit chiral symmetry breaking are depicted in the phase diagram. Various critical exponents related to the order parameter, chiral susceptibilities and correlation lengths have been calculated for the 3-$d$ $O(4)$ and $Z(2)$ universality classes in the phase diagram, respectively. We find that the critical exponents obtained in the computation, where a field-dependent mesonic nontrivial dispersion relation is taken into account, are in quantitative agreement with results from other approaches, e.g., the conformal bootstrap, Monte Carlo simulations and $d=3$ perturbation expansion, etc. Moreover, the size of the critical regime in the QCD phase diagram is found to be very small.

Correlations of conserved charges and QCD phase structure

Correlations of conserved charges, i.e., the baryon number, electric charge and the strangeness, have been calculated at finite temperature and chemical potential up to the fourth order. The calculations are done in a 2+1 flavor low energy effective theory, where quantum and thermal fluctuations are encoded through the evolution of flow equations within the functional renormalization group approach. Strangeness neutrality and a fixed ratio of the electric charge to the baryon number density are implemented throughout the computation. We find that higher-order correlations carry more sensitive critical dynamics in comparison to the quadratic ones, and a non-monotonic dependence of the fourth-order correlations between the baryon number and strangeness, $-χ^{BS}_{31}/χ^{S}_{2}$ and $χ^{BS}_{22}/χ^{S}_{2}$, on the collision energy is found.

Chiral Susceptibility in (2+1)-flavour QCD

We calculate chiral susceptibilities in (2+1)-flavour QCD for different masses of the light quarks using the functional renormalisation group (fRG) approach to first-principles QCD. We follow the evolution of the chiral susceptibilities with decreasing masses as obtained from both the light-quark and the reduced quark condensate. The latter compares very well with recent results from the HotQCD collaboration for pion masses $m_π\gtrsim 100\,\text{MeV}$. For smaller pion masses, the fRG and lattice results are still consistent. In particular, the estimates for the chiral critical temperature are in very good agreement. We close by discussing different extrapolations to the chiral limit.

Strangeness neutrality and baryon-strangeness correlations

We derive a simple relation between strangeness neutrality and baryon-strangeness correlations. In heavy-ion collisions, the former is a consequence of quark number conservation of the strong interactions while the latter are sensitive probes of the character of QCD matter. This relation allows us to directly extract baryon-strangeness correlations from the strangeness chemical potential at strangeness neutrality. The explicit calculations are performed within a low energy theory of QCD with 2+1 dynamical quark flavors at finite temperature and density. Non-perturbative quark and hadron fluctuations are taken into account within the functional renormalization group. The results show the pronounced sensitivity of baryon-strangeness correlations on the QCD phase transition and the crucial role that strangeness neutrality plays for this observable.

Strangeness Neutrality and QCD Thermodynamics

Since the incident nuclei in heavy-ion collisions do not carry strangeness, the global net strangeness of the detected hadrons has to vanish. We investigate the impact of strangeness neutrality on the phase structure and thermodynamics of QCD at finite baryon and strangeness chemical potential. To this end, we study the low-energy sector of QCD within a Polyakov loop enhanced quark-meson effective theory with 2+1 dynamical quark flavors. Non-perturbative quantum, thermal, and density fluctuations are taken into account with the functional renormalization group. We show that the impact of strangeness neutrality on thermodynamic quantities such as the equation of state is sizable.

Mesonic dynamics and QCD phase transition

We study the nontrivial dispersion relation of mesons resulting from the splitting of the transversal and longitudinal mesonic wave function renormalizations, and its influences on the QCD phase transition, equation of state, and the fluctuations of baryon number. The calculations are performed in a two-flavor low energy effective model within the functional renormalization group approach. We find that influences of the splitting mesonic wave function renormalizations on the equilibrium thermodynamical bulk properties are mild. Furthermore, we have compare the fixed and running expansion for the effective potential in detail, through which the role of the field-dependent meson and quark wave function renormalizations could be inferred.

New Insight about the Effective Restoration of U_A(1) Symmetry

The effective restoration of the U_{A}(1) symmetry is revisited by implementing the functional renormalization group approach combining with the 2+1 flavor Polyakov-loop quark-meson model. A temperature-dependent 't Hooft term is taken to imitate the restoration of the U_{A}(1) symmetry. Order parameters, meson spectrum and mixing angles, especially the pressure and the entropy density of the system are calculated to explore the effects of different U_{A}(1) symmetry restoration patterns. We show then that the temperature for the restoration of the U_{A}(1) symmetry is much higher than that for the chiral symmetry SU_{A}(3).

Baryon number fluctuations in the 2+1 flavor low energy effective model

High order cumulants of the baryon number distribution are calculated in a 2+1 flavor low energy effective model. Quantum fluctuations are encoded through the functional renormalization group approach. The chiral and deconfinement phase transitions are investigated at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential. The equation of state for the QCD matter, fluctuations of the baryon number and the strangeness up to sixth order are calculated, and one finds the results are consistent with those from lattice QCD.

The QCD phase structure at finite temperature and density

We discuss the phase structure of QCD for $N_f=2$ and $N_f=2+1$ dynamical quark flavours at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential. It emerges dynamically from the underlying fundamental interactions between quarks and gluons in our work. To this end, starting from the perturbative high-energy regime, we systematically integrate-out quantum fluctuations towards low energies by using the functional renormalisation group. By dynamically hadronising the dominant interaction channels responsible for the formation of light mesons and quark condensates, we are able to extract the phase diagram for $μ_B/T \lesssim 6$. We find a critical endpoint at $(T_\text{CEP},{μ_B}_{\text{CEP}})=(107, 635)\,\text{MeV}$. The curvature of the phase boundary at small chemical potential is $κ=0.0142(2)$, computed from the renormalised light chiral condensate $Δ_{l,R}$. Furthermore, we find indications for an inhomogeneous regime in the vicinity and above the chiral transition for $μ_B\gtrsim 417$ MeV. Where applicable, our results are in very good agreement with the most recent lattice results. We also compare to results from other functional methods and phenomenological freeze-out data. This indicates that a consistent picture of the phase structure at finite baryon chemical potential is beginning to emerge. The systematic uncertainty of our results grows large in the density regime around the critical endpoint and we discuss necessary improvements of our current approximation towards a quantitatively precise determination of QCD phase diagram.

Strangeness neutrality and the QCD phase diagram

Since the incident nuclei in heavy-ion collisions do not carry strangeness, the global net strangeness of the detected hadrons has to vanish. We show that there is an intimate relation between strangeness neutrality and baryon-strangeness correlations. In the context of heavy-ion collisions, the former is a consequence of quark number conservation of the strong interactions while the latter are sensitive probes of the character of QCD matter. We investigate the sensitivity of baryon-strangeness correlations on the freeze-out conditions of heavy-ion collisions by studying their dependence on temperature, baryon- and strangeness chemical potential. The impact of strangeness neutrality on the QCD equation of state at finite chemical potentials will also be discussed. We model the low-energy sector of QCD by an effective Polyakov loop enhanced quark-meson model with 2+1 dynamical quark flavors and use the functional renormalization group to account for the non-perturbative quantum fluctuations of hadrons.

Thermodynamics of 2+1 Flavor Polyakov-Loop Quark-Meson Model under External Magnetic Field

We study the thermodynamics of QCD system under external magnetic field via the 2+1 flavor Polyakov-loop quark-meson model. To incorporate quantum and thermal fluctuations, the functional renormalization group approach is implemented in our work. Pressure, entropy density, magnetic susceptibility and other thermodynamic quantities are calculated and analyzed to investigate the effect of magnetic field on the QCD system. The calculated results are in reasonable agreement with lattice QCD simulations and perturbation theory. We then give an intuitive picture for the response of QCD system to the magnetic field.

Baryon number probability distribution at finite temperature

The probability distribution of the net baryon number is investigated within the functional renormalization group approach. We find that the Roberge-Weiss periodicity related to the Z(3) symmetry of the gluon fields results directly in that, states of the net baryon number $N_B=N\pm 1/3$ with $N\in\mathbb{Z}$ are prohibited, and only those of $N_B=N$ are possible. By employing the probability distribution of the net baryon number, we also compute the cumulants of the baryon number distribution, which are found to be well consistent with those obtained from the generalized susceptibilities. A question about the relation between the color confinement and the probability distribution of net baryon number is put forward.

Chiral criticality and glue dynamics

The chiral order-parameter $σ$ field and its higher-order cumulants of fluctuations are calculated within the functional renormalization group approach. The influence of the glue dynamics on the fluctuations of $σ$ field is investigated, and we find that the $σ$-field fluctuations are weakly affected by the glue dynamics. This is in sharp contrast to the baryon number fluctuations, which are sensitive to the glue dynamics and involve information of the color confinement. Implications of our calculated results on theoretical and experimental efforts to search for the QCD critical ending point are discussed.

Four-fermion interactions and the chiral symmetry breaking in an external magnetic field

We investigate the chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking at finite temperature and in an external magnetic field with four-fermion interactions of different channels. Quantum and thermal fluctuations are included within the functional renormalization group approach, and properties of the set of flow equations for different couplings, such as its fixed points, are discussed. It is found that external parameters, e.g. the temperature and the external magnetic field and so on, do not change the structure of the renormalization group flows for the couplings. The flow strength is found to be significantly dependent on the route and direction in the plane of couplings of different channels. Therefore, the critical temperature for the chiral phase transition shows a pronounced dependence on the direction as well. Given fixed initial ultraviolet couplings, the critical temperature increases with the increasing magnetic field, viz., the magnetic catalysis is observed with initial couplings fixed.

Identifying the QCD Phase Transitions via the Gravitational Wave Frequency

We investigate the nonradial oscillations of newly born neutron stars (NSs) and strange quark stars (SQSs). This is done with the relativistic nuclear field theory with hyperon degrees of freedom employed to describe the equation of state for the stellar matter in NSs, and with both the MIT bag model and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model adopted to construct the configurations of the SQSs. We find that the gravitational-mode ($g$-mode) eigenfrequencies of newly born SQSs are about one order of magnitude lower than those of NSs, which is independent of models implemented to describe the equation of state for the strange quark matter. Meanwhile the eigenfrequencies of the other modes of nonradial oscillations, e.g., fundamental ($f$)- and pressure ($p$)-modes, are much larger than those of the $g$-mode. In the light of the first direct observation of gravitational waves, it is promising to employ the gravitational waves to identify the QCD phase transition in high density strong interaction matter.

Baryon number fluctuations at finite temperature and density

We investigate baryon number fluctuations for finite temperature and density in two-flavor QCD. This is done within a QCD-improved low-energy effective theory in an extension of the approach put forward in [1,2]. In the present work we aim at improving the predictive power of this approach for large temperatures and density, that is, for small collision energies. This is achieved by taking into account the full frequency dependence of the quark dispersion. This ensures the necessary Silver Blaze property of finite density QCD for the first time, which so far was only implemented approximately. Moreover, we show that Polyakov loop fluctuations have a sizeable impact at large temperatures and density. The results for the kurtosis of baryon number fluctuations are compared to previous effective theory results, lattice results and recent experimental data from STAR.

Correlating the skewness and kurtosis of baryon number distributions

The skewness and the kurtosis of the baryon number distributions are computed within QCD-improved low energy effective models including quantum thermal and density fluctuations. The results are compared with the Beam Energy Scan experiment at RHIC. The theoretical results agree with the experimental measurements up to errors, for the collision energy $\sqrt{s}\ge 19.6\,\mathrm{GeV}$. For smaller collision energies a discrepancy between theoretical and experimental results develops. This discrepancy partially relates to the lack of precision of the current setup for small collision energies. It is outlined how this deficiency can be overcome.

Properties of Mesons in a Strong Magnetic Field

By extending the $Φ$-derivable approach in Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to finite magnetic field we calculate the properties of pion, $σ$ and $ρ$ mesons in a magnetic field at finite temperature in not only the quark-antiquark bound state scheme but also the pion-pion scattering resonant state scenario. Our calculation results manifest that the masses of $π^{0}$ and $σ$ meson can be nearly degenerate at the pseudo-critical temperature which increases with increasing the magnetic field strength, and the $π^{\pm}$ mass ascends suddenly at almost the same critical temperature. While the $ρ$ mesons' masses decrease with the temperature but increase with the magnetic field strength. We also check the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation and find that the relation can be violated obviously with increasing the temperature, and the effect of the magnetic field becomes pronounced around the critical temperature. With different criteria, we analyze the effect of the magnetic field on the chiral phase transition and find that the pseudo-critical temperature of the chiral phase cross, $T_{c}^χ$, is always enhanced by the magnetic field. Moreover our calculations indicate that the $ρ$ mesons will get melted as the chiral symmetry has not yet been restored, but the $σ$ meson does not disassociate even at very high temperature. Particularly, it is the first to show that there does not exist vector meson condensate in the QCD vacuum in the pion-pion scattering scheme.
