The Wigner Solution and QCD Phase Transitions in a Modified PNJL Model

By employing some modification to the widely used two-flavor Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model, we discuss the Wigner solution of the quark gap equation at finite temperature and zero quark chemical potential beyond the chiral limit, and then try to explore its influences on the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions of QCD at finite temperature and zero chemical potential. The discovery of the coexistence of the Nambu and the Wigner solutions of the quark gap equation with nonzero current quark mass at zero temperature and zero chemical potential, as well as their evolutions with temperature is very interesting for the studies of the phase transitions of QCD. According to our results, the chiral phase transition might be of first order (while the deconfinement phase transition is still a crossover, as in the normal PNJL model), and the corresponding phase transition temperature is lower than that of the deconfinement phase transition, instead of coinciding with each other, which are not the same as the conclusions obtained from the normal PNJL model. In addition, we also discuss the sensibility of our final results on the choice of model parameters.

Discussion for the Solutions of Dyson-Schwinger Equations at m>0 in QED3

In the case of nonzero fermion mass, within a range of Ansatze for the full fermion-boson vertex, we show that Dyson-Schwinger equation for the fermion propagator in QED3 has two qualitatively distinct dynamical chiral symmetry breaking solutions. As the fermion mass increases and reaches to a critical value mc, one solution disappears, and the dependence of mc on the number of fermion flavors is also given.

A thermodynamically consistent quasi-particle model without temperature-dependent infinity of the vacuum zero point energy

In this paper, an improved quasi-particle model is presented. Unlike the previous approach of establishing quasi-particle model, we introduce a classical background field (it is allowed to depend on the temperature) to deal with the infinity of thermal vacuum energy which exists in previous quasi-particle models. After taking into account the effect of this classical background field, the partition function of quasi-particle system can be made well-defined. Based on this and following the standard ensemble theory, we construct a thermodynamically consistent quasi-particle model without the need of any reformulation of statistical mechanics or thermodynamical consistency relation. As an application of our model, we employ it to the case of (2+1) flavor QGP at zero chemical potential and finite temperature and obtain a good fit to the recent lattice simulation results of S. Borsanyi $et$ $al$. A comparison of the result of our model with early calculations using other models is also presented. It is shown that our method is general and can be generalized to the case where the effective mass depends not only on the temperature but also on the chemical potential.

The Wigner solution of quark gap equation at nonzero current quark mass and partial restoration of chiral symmetry at finite chemical potential

According to the generally accepted phase diagram of QCD, at low temperature and high baryon number density the chiral phase transition of QCD is of first order and the co-existence of the Nambu-Goldstone phase and the Wigner phase should appear. This is in conflict with the usual claim that the quark gap equation has no Wigner solution in the case of nonzero current quark mass. In this paper we analyze the reason why the Wigner solution does not exist in the usual treatment and try to propose a new approach to discuss this question. As a first step, we adopt a modified Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model to study the Wigner solution at finite current quark mass. We then generalize this approach to the case of finite chemical potential and discuss partial restoration of chiral symmetry at finite chemical potential and compare our results with those in the normal NJL model.

The Equation of State and Quark Number Susceptibility in Hard-Dense-Loop Approximation

Based on the method proposed in [ H. S. Zong, W. M. Sun, Phys. Rev. \textbf{D 78}, 054001 (2008)], we calculate the equation of state (EOS) of QCD at zero temperature and finite quark chemical potential under the hard-dense-loop (HDL) approximation. A comparison between the EOS under HDL approximation and the cold, perturbative EOS of QCD proposed by Fraga, Pisarski and Schaffner-Bielich is made. It is found that the pressure under HDL approximation is generally smaller than the perturbative result. In addition, we also calculate the quark number susceptibility (QNS) at finite temperature and finite chemical potential under hard-thermal/dense-loop (HTL/HDL) approximation and compare our results with the corresponding ones in the previous literature.

Calculation of tensor susceptibility beyond rainbow-ladder approximation of Dyson-Schwinger equations approach

In this paper, we extend the calculation of tensor vacuum susceptibility in the rainbow-ladder approximation of the Dyson-Schwinger (DS) approach in [Y.M.Shi, K.P.Wu, W.M.Sun, H.S.Zong, J.L.Ping, Phys. Lett. B $\bf{639}$, 248 (2006)] to that of employing the Ball-Chiu (BC) vertex. The dressing effect of the quark-gluon vertex on the tensor vacuum susceptibility is investigated. Our results show that compared with its rainbow-ladder approximation value, the tensor vacuum susceptibility obtained in the BC vertex approximation is reduced by about 10%. This shows that the dressing effect of the quark-gluon vertex is not large in the calculation of the tensor vacuum susceptibility in the DS approach.

The Quark Number Susceptibility in Hard-Thermal-Loop Approximation

With the aid of the vector Ward-Takahashi identity we derive a general formula for the quark number susceptibility (QNS) which expresses the QNS as an integral expression only involving the full quark propagator at finite temperature and chemical potential. The QNS at finite temperature and zero chemical potential is calculated with the dressed quark propagator in the Hard-Thermal-Loop (HTL) approximation. A comparison of our result with the results of QNS in HTL approximation in previous literatures is given.

Chiral susceptibility and the scalar Ward identity

The chiral susceptibility is given by the scalar vacuum polarisation at zero total momentum. This follows directly from the expression for the vacuum quark condensate so long as a nonperturbative symmetry preserving truncation scheme is employed. For QCD in-vacuum the susceptibility can rigorously be defined via a Pauli-Villars regularisation procedure. Owing to the scalar Ward identity, irrespective of the form or Ansatz for the kernel of the gap equation, the consistent scalar vertex at zero total momentum can automatically be obtained and hence the consistent susceptibility. This enables calculation of the chiral susceptibility for markedly different vertex Ansaetze. For the two cases considered, the results were consistent and the minor quantitative differences easily understood. The susceptibility can be used to demarcate the domain of coupling strength within a theory upon which chiral symmetry is dynamically broken. Degenerate massless scalar and pseudoscalar bound-states appear at the critical coupling for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking.

Revisiting the Vector and Axial-vector Vacuum Susceptibilities

We re-investigate the vector and axial-vector vacuum susceptibilities by taking advantage of the vector and axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identities. We show analytically that, in the chiral limit, the vector vacuum susceptibility is zero and the axial-vector vacuum susceptibility equals three fourths of the square of the pion decay constant. Besides, our analysis reproduces the Weinberg sum rule.

The calculation of the equation of state of QCD at finite chemical potential and zero temperature

In this paper, we give a direct method for calculating the partition function, and hence the equation of state (EOS) of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at finite chemical potential and zero temperature. In the EOS derived in this paper the pressure density is the sum of two terms: the first term ${\cal P}(μ)|_{μ=0}$ (the pressure density at $μ=0$) is a $μ$-independent constant; the second term, which is totally determined by $G_R[μ](p)$ (the renormalized dressed quark propagator at finite $μ$), contains all the nontrivial $μ$-dependence. By applying a general result in the rainbow-ladder approximation of the Dyson-Schwinger approach obtained in our previous study [Phys. Rev. {\bf C 71}, 015205 (2005)], $G_R[μ](p)$ is calculated from the meromorphic quark propagator proposed in [Phys. Rev. {\bf D 70}, 014014 (2004)]. From this the full analytic expression of the EOS of QCD at finite $μ$ and zero $T$ is obtained (apart from the constant term ${\cal P}(μ)|_{μ=0}$ which can in principle be calculated from the CJT effective action). A comparison between our EOS and the cold, perturbative EOS of QCD of Fraga, Pisarski and Schaffner-Bielich is made. It is expected that our EOS can provide a possible new approach for the study of neutron stars.

The Calculation of $f_π$ and $m_π$ at Finite Chemical Potential

Based on the previous work in [Y. Jiang, Y.M. Shi, H.T. Feng, W.M. Sun and H.S. Zong, Phys. Rev. C {\bf 78}, 025214 (2008)] on the quark-meson vertex and pion properties at finite quark chemical potential, we provide an analytical analysis of the weak decay constant of the pion ($f_π[μ]$) and the pion mass ($m_π[μ]$) at finite quark chemical potential using the model quark propagator proposed in [R. Alkofer, W. Detmold, C.S. Fischer and P. Maris, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 70}, 014014 (2004)]. It is found that when $μ$ is below a threshold value $μ_0$ (which equals $0.350 \mathrm{GeV}$, $0.377 \mathrm{GeV}$ and $0.341 \mathrm{GeV}$, for the $\mathrm{2CC}$, $\mathrm{1R1CC}$ and $\mathrm{3R}$ parametrizations of the model quark propagator, respectively.), $f_π[μ]$ and $m_π[μ]$ are kept unchanged from their vacuum values. The value of $μ_0$ is intimately connected with the pole distribution of the model quark propagator and is found to coincide with the threshold value below which the quark-number density vanishes identically. Numerical calculations show that when $μ$ becomes larger than $μ_0$, $f_π[μ]$ exhibits a sharp decrease whereas $m_π[μ]$ exhibits a sharp increase. A comparison is given between the results obtained in this paper and those obtained in previous literatures.

New Method for Numerically Solving the Chemical Potential Dependence of the Dressed Quark Propagator

Based on the rainbow approximation of Dyson-Schwinger equation and the assumption that the inverse dressed quark propagator at finite chemical potential is analytic in the neighborhood of $μ=0$, a new method for obtaining the dressed quark propagator at finite chemical potential $μ$ from the one at zero chemical potential is developed. Using this method the dressed quark propagator at finite chemical potential can be obtained directly from the one at zero chemical potential without the necessity of numerically solving the corresponding coupled integral equations by iteration methods. A comparison with previous results is given.

The Chiral Quark Condensate and the Bag Constant with Finite Chemical Potential

A method for obtaining the low chemical potential dependence of the dressed quark propagator from an effective quark-quark interaction model is developed. From this the chemical potential dependence of the chiral quark condensate and bag constant are evaluated. It is found that the chiral order parameter decreases with the increasing chemical potential $μ$, which is qualitatively different from the results given by some authors in the literature. The reason for this discrepancy is discussed.
