Emergent devil's staircase without particle-hole symmetry in Rydberg quantum gases with competing attractive and repulsive interactions

The devil's staircase is a fractal structure that characterizes the ground state of one-dimensional classical lattice gases with long-range repulsive convex interactions. Its plateaus mark regions of stability for specific filling fractions which are controlled by a chemical potential. Typically such staircase has an explicit particle-hole symmetry, i.e., the staircase at more than half-filling can be trivially extracted from the one at less than half filling by exchanging the roles of holes and particles. Here we introduce a quantum spin chain with competing short-range attractive and long-range repulsive interactions, i.e. a non-convex potential. In the classical limit the ground state features generalized Wigner crystals that --- depending on the filling fraction --- are either composed of dimer particles or dimer holes which results in an emergent complete devil's staircase without explicit particle-hole symmetry of the underlying microscopic model. In our system the particle-hole symmetry is lifted due to the fact that the staircase is controlled through a two-body interaction rather than a one-body chemical potential. The introduction of quantum fluctuations through a transverse field melts the staircase and ultimately makes the system enter a paramagnetic phase. For intermediate transverse field strengths, however, we identify a region, where the density-density correlations suggest the emergence of quasi long-range order. We discuss how this physics can be explored with Rydberg-dressed atoms held in a lattice.

Coherence in a cold atom photon transistor

Recent experiments have realized an all-optical photon transistor using a cold atomic gas. This approach relies on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in conjunction with the strong interaction among atoms excited to high-lying Rydberg states. The transistor is gated via a so-called Rydberg spinwave, in which a single Rydberg excitation is coherently shared by the whole ensemble. In its absence the incoming photon passes through the atomic ensemble by virtue of EIT while in its presence the photon is scattered rendering the atomic gas opaque. An important current challenge is to preserve the coherence of the Rydberg spinwave during the operation of the transistor, which would enable for example its coherent optical read-out and its further processing in quantum circuits. With a combined field theoretical and quantum jump approach and by employing a simple model description we investigate systematically and comprehensively how the coherence of the Rydberg spinwave is affected by photon scattering. With large-scale numerical calculations we show how coherence becomes increasingly protected with growing interatomic interaction strength. For the strongly interacting limit we derive analytical expressions for the spinwave fidelity as a function of the optical depth and bandwidth of the incoming photon.

Spin Correlations as a Probe of Quantum Synchronization in Trapped Ion Phonon-Lasers

We investigate quantum synchronization theoretically in a system consisting of two cold ions in microtraps. The ions' motion is damped by a standing-wave laser whilst also being driven by a blue-detuned laser which results in self-oscillation. Working in a non-classical regime, where these oscillations contain only a few phonons and have a sub-Poissonian number variance, we explore how synchronization occurs when the two ions are weakly coupled using a probability distribution for the relative phase. We show that strong correlations arise between the spin and vibrational degrees of freedom within each ion and find that when two ions synchronize their spin degrees of freedom in turn become correlated. This allows one to indirectly infer the presence of synchronization by measuring the ions' internal state.

Electromagnetically induced transparency of a single-photon in dipole-coupled one-dimensional atomic clouds

We investigate the propagation of a single photon under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency in two parallel one-dimensional atomic clouds which are coupled via Rydberg dipole-dipole interaction. Initially the system is prepared with a single delocalized Rydberg excitation shared between the two ensembles and the photon enters both of them in an arbitrary path-superposition state. By properly aligning the transition dipoles of the atoms of each cloud we show that the photon can be partially transferred from one cloud to the other via the dipole-dipole interaction. This coupling leads to the formation of dark and bright superpositions of the light which experience different absorption and dispersion. We show that this feature can be exploited to filter the incident photon in such a way that only a desired path-superposition state is transmitted transparently. Finally, we generalize the analysis to the case of N coupled one-dimensional clouds. We show that within some approximations the dynamics of the propagating photon can be mapped on that of a free particle with complex mass.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in an entangled medium

We theoretically investigate light propagation and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a quasi one-dimensional gas in which atoms interact strongly via exchange interactions. We focus on the case in which the gas is initially prepared in a many-body state that contains a single excitation and conduct a detailed study of the absorptive and dispersive properties of such a medium. This scenario is achieved in interacting gases of Rydberg atoms with two relevant $S$-states that are coupled through exchange. Of particular interest is the case in which the medium is prepared in an entangled spinwave state. This, in conjunction with the exchange interaction, gives rise to a non-local susceptibilty which --- in comparison to conventional Rydberg EIT --- qualitatively alters the absorption and propagation of weak probe light, leading to non-local propagation and enhanced absorption.

Generalised Dicke non-equilibrium dynamics in trapped ions

We explore trapped ions as a setting to investigate non-equilibrium phases in a generalised Dicke model of dissipative spins coupled to phonon modes. We find a rich dynamical phase diagram including superradiant-like regimes, dynamical phase-coexistence and phonon-lasing behaviour. A particular advantage of trapped ions is that these phases and transitions among them can be probed in situ through fluorescence. We demonstrate that the main physical insights are captured by a minimal model and consider an experimental realisation with Ca+ ions trapped in a linear Paul trap.

Entangling quantum gate in trapped ions via Rydberg blockade

We present a theoretical analysis of the implementation of an entangling quantum gate between two trapped Ca$^+$ ions which is based on the dipolar interaction among ionic Rydberg states. In trapped ions the Rydberg excitation dynamics is usually strongly affected by mechanical forces due to the strong couplings between electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in inhomogeneous electric fields. We demonstrate that this harmful effect can be overcome by using dressed states that emerge from the microwave coupling of nearby Rydberg states. At the same time these dressed states exhibit long range dipolar interactions which we use to implement a controlled adiabatic phase gate. Our study highlights a route towards a trapped ion quantum processor in which quantum gates are realized independently of the vibrational modes.

Parallel execution of quantum gates in a long linear ion chain via Rydberg mode shaping

We present a mechanism that permits the parallel execution of multiple quantum gate operations within a single long linear ion chain. Our approach is based on large coherent forces that occur when ions are electronically excited to long-lived Rydberg states. The presence of Rydberg ions drastically affects the vibrational mode structure of the ion crystal giving rise to modes that are spatially localized on isolated sub-crystals which can be individually and independently manipulated. We theoretically discuss this Rydberg mode shaping in an experimentally realistic setup and illustrate its power by analyzing the fidelity of two conditional phase flip gates executed in parallel. Our scheme highlights a possible route towards large-scale quantum computing via vibrational mode shaping which is controlled on the single ion level.

Probing the interaction between Rydberg-dressed atoms through interference

We study the dynamics of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice in which the electronic groundstate of each atom is weakly coupled to a highly excited Rydberg state by a far off-resonant laser. This dressing induces a switchable effective soft-core interaction between groundstate atoms which, in the lattice, gives rise to on-site as well as long-range interaction terms. Upon switching on the dressing laser the Bose-Einstein condensate undergoes a nontrivial collapse and revival dynamics which can be observed in the interference pattern that is created after a release of the atoms from the optical lattice. This interference signal strongly depends on the strength and the duration of the dressing laser pulse and can be used to probe and characterize the effective interaction between Rydberg-dressed atoms.

Electronically excited cold ion crystals

The laser excitation of an ion crystal to high lying and long-lived electronic states is a genuine many-body process even if in fact only a single ion is excited. This is a direct manifestation of the strong coupling between internal and external dynamics and becomes most apparent in the vicinity of a structural phase transition. Here we show that utilizing highly excited states offers a new approach to the coherent manipulation of ion crystals. This permits the study of phenomena which rely on a strong coupling between electronic and vibrational dynamics and opens up a route towards the quantum simulation of molecular processes in a Paul trap.

Lifetimes of ultralong-range Rydberg molecules in vibrational ground and excited state

Since their first experimental observation, ultralong-range Rydberg molecules consisting of a highly excited Rydberg atom and a ground state atom have attracted the interest in the field of ultracold chemistry. Especially the intriguing properties like size, polarizability and type of binding they inherit from the Rydberg atom are of interest. An open question in the field is the reduced lifetime of the molecules compared to the corresponding atomic Rydberg states. In this letter we present an experimental study on the lifetimes of the ^3Σ(5s-35s) molecule in its vibrational ground state and in an excited state. We show that the lifetimes depends on the density of ground state atoms and that this can be described in the frame of a classical scattering between the molecules and ground state atoms. We also find that the excited molecular state has an even more reduced lifetime compared to the ground state which can be attributed to an inward penetration of the bound atomic pair due to imperfect quantum reflection that takes place in the special shape of the molecular potential.

The Invisible Quantum Barrier

We construct the invisible quantum barrier which represents the phenomenon of quantum reflection using the available data. We use the Abel equation to invert the data. The resulting invisible quantum barrier is double-valued in both axes. We study this invisible barrier in the case of atom and Bose-Einstein Condensate reflection from a solid silicon surface. A time-dependent, one-spatial dimension Gross-Pitaevskii equation is solved for the BEC case. We found that the BEC behaves very similarly to the single atom except for size effects, which manifest themselves in a maximum in the reflectivity at small distances from the wall. The effect of the atom-atom interaction on the BEC reflection and correspondingly on the invisible barrier is found to be appreciable at low velocities and comparable to the finite size effect. The trapping of ultracold atoms or BEC between two walls is discussed.

A vortex dipole in a trapped two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the conservative dynamics and stationary configurations of a vortex-antivortex pair in a harmonically trapped two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. We establish the conceptual framework for understanding the stationary states and the topological defect trajectories, through considerations of different mechanisms of vortex motion and the bifurcation of soliton-like stationary solutions. Our insights are based on Lagrangian-based variational calculations, numerical solutions of both the time-dependent and time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equations, and exact solutions for the non-interacting case.

Directly determining the relative phase of two coherent solitary waves in attractive Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the dynamic structure factor of two coherent bright solitary waves in attractive Bose- Einstein condensates confined in a harmonic trap. We demonstrate that the wave function of the two solitary waves with a fixed relative phase shows interference in momentum space. The fringes are shifted depending on the values of the phase. This momentum interference can be extracted from the dynamic structure factor of the system using stimulated two-photon Bragg scattering. Thus our method provides a way to measure the relative phase directly.

Correlation and entanglement of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in a double well

We consider a novel system of two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. Based on the well-known two-mode approximation, we demonstrate that there are obvious avoided level-crossings when both interspecies and intraspecies interactions of two species are increased. The quantum dynamics of the system exhibits revised oscillating behaviors compared with a single component condensate. We also examine the entanglement of two species. Our numerical calculations show the onset of entanglement can be signed as a violation of Cauchy-Schwarz inequality of second-order cross correlation function. Consequently, we use Von Neumann entropy to quantity the degree of entanglement.

Many-body dynamics of a Bose system with attractive interactions on a ring

We investigate the many-body dynamics of an effectively attractive one-dimensional Bose system confined in a toroidal trap. The mean-field theory predicts that a bright-soliton state will be formed when increasing the interparticle interaction over a critical point. The study of quantum many-body dynamics in this paper reveals that there is a modulation instability in a finite Bose system correspondingly. We show that Shannon entropy becomes irregular near and above the critical point due to quantum correlations. We also study the dynamical behavior of the instability by exploring the momentum distribution and the fringe visibility, which can be verified experimentally by releasing the trap

Reexamination of the Constraint on Topcolor-Assisted Technicolor Models from R_b

Recent study on the charged top-pion correction to R_b shows that it is negative and large, so that the precision experimental value of R_b gives rise to a severe constraint on the topcolor-assisted technicolor models such that the top-pion mass should be of the order of 1 TeV. In this paper, we restudy this constraint by further taking account the extended technicolor gauge boson correction which is positive. With this positive contribution to R_b, the constraint on the topcolor-assisted technicolor models from R_b changes significantly. The top-pion mass is allowed to be in the region of a few hundred GeV depending on the models.
