Engineering Nonporous Polymer Hybrids with Suppressed Heat Conduction and Enhanced Flame Retardancy via Molecular and Filler Design

This study presents a new strategy for achieving ultralow thermal conductivity in nonporous polymer/organic filler hybrids by suppressing heat capacity through tailored atomic vibrations to enhance thermal insulation. Unlike conventional polymer/inorganic filler hybrids, these hybrids exhibit interfacial thermal resistance one to three orders of magnitude lower. Combined experiments and simulations uncover thermal transport mechanisms. These hybrids demonstrate enhanced flame retardancy. Please see the abstract in the attached PDF.

Sn4+ Precursor Enables 12.4% Efficient Kesterite Solar Cell from DMSO Solution with Open Circuit Voltage Deficit Below 0.30 V

The limiting factor preventing kesterite (CZTSSe) thin film solar cell performance further improvement is the large open-circuit voltage deficit (Voc,def) issue, which is 0.345V for the current world record device with an efficiency of 12.6%. In this work, SnCl4 and SnCl2_2H2O are respectively used as tin precursor to investigate the Voc,def issue of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution processed CZTSSe solar cells. Different complexations of tin compounds with thiourea and DMSO lead to different reaction pathways from solution to absorber material and thus dramatic difference in photovoltaic performance. The coordination of Sn2+ with Tu leads to the formation of SnS and ZnS and Cu2S in the precursor film, which converted to selenides first and then fused to CZTSSe, resulting in poor film quality and device performance. The highest efficiency obtained from this film is 8.84% with a Voc,def of 0.391V. The coordination of Sn4+ with DMSO facilitates direct formation ofkesterite CZTS phase in the precursor film which directed converted to CZTSSe during selenization, resulting in compositional uniform absorber and high device performance. A device with active area efficiency 12.2% and a Voc,def of 0.344 V was achieved from Sn4+ solution processed absorber. Furthermore, CZTSSe/CdS heterojunction heat treatment (JHT) significantly improved Sn4+ device performance but had slightly negative effect on Sn2+ device. A champion CZTSSe solar cell with a total area efficiency of 12.4% (active are efficiency 13.6%) and low Voc,def of 0.297 V was achieved from Sn4+ solution. Our results demonstrate the preformed uniform kesterite phase enabled by Sn4+ precursor is the key in achieving highly efficient kesterite absorber material. The lowest Voc-def and high efficiency achieved here shines new light on the future of kesterite solar cell.

Exponential Structure of Income Inequality: Evidence from 67 Countries

Economic competition between humans leads to income inequality, but, so far, there has been little understanding of underlying quantitative mechanisms governing such a collective behavior. We analyze datasets of household income from 67 countries, ranging from Europe to Latin America, North America and Asia. For all of the countries, we find a surprisingly uniform rule: Income distribution for the great majority of populations (low and middle income classes) follows an exponential law. To explain this empirical observation, we propose a theoretical model within the standard framework of modern economics and show that free competition and Rawls' fairness are the underlying mechanisms producing the exponential pattern. The free parameters of the exponential distribution in our model have an explicit economic interpretation and direct relevance to policy measures intended to alleviate income inequality.

Direct Observation of Long Electron-Hole Diffusion Distance in CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite Thin Film

In high performance perovskite based solar cells, CH3NH3PbI3 is the key material. We carried out a study on charge diffusion in spin-coated CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite thin film by transient fluorescent spectroscopy. A thickness-dependent fluorescent lifetime was found. By coating the film with an electron or hole transfer layer, [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) or 2,2,7,7-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) respectively, we observed the charge transfer directly through the fluorescence quenching. One-dimensional diffusion model was applied to obtain long charge diffusion distances in thick films, which is ~1.7 um for electrons and up to ~6.3 um for holes. Short diffusion distance of few hundreds of nanosecond was also observed in thin films. This thickness dependent charge diffusion explained the formerly reported short charge diffusion distance (~100 nm) in films and resolved its confliction to thick working layer (300-500 nm) in real devices. This study presents direct support to the high performance perovskite solar cells and will benefit the devices design.
