PT-ResNet: Perspective Transformation-Based Residual Network for Semantic Road Image Segmentation

Semantic road region segmentation is a high-level task, which paves the way towards road scene understanding. This paper presents a residual network trained for semantic road segmentation. Firstly, we represent the projections of road disparities in the v-disparity map as a linear model, which can be estimated by optimizing the v-disparity map using dynamic programming. This linear model is then utilized to reduce the redundant information in the left and right road images. The right image is also transformed into the left perspective view, which greatly enhances the road surface similarity between the two images. Finally, the processed stereo images and their disparity maps are concatenated to create a set of 3D images, which are then utilized to train our neural network. The experimental results illustrate that our network achieves a maximum F1-measure of approximately 91.19% when analyzing the images from the KITTI road dataset.

Autonomous UAV Landing System Based on Visual Navigation

In this paper, we present an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) landing system based on visual navigation. We design the landmark as a topological pattern in order to enable the UAV to distinguish the landmark from the environment easily. In addition, a dynamic thresholding method is developed for image binarization to improve detection efficiency. The relative distance in the horizontal plane is calculated according to effective image information, and the relative height is obtained using a linear interpolation method. The landing experiments are performed on a static and a moving platform, respectively. The experimental results illustrate that our proposed landing system performs robustly and accurately.

Orbital stabilization of nonlinear systems via Mexican sombrero energy shaping and pumping-and-damping injection

In this paper we show that a slight modification to the widely popular interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based control method---originally proposed for stabilization of equilibria of nonlinear systems---allows us to provide a solution to the more challenging orbital stabilization problem. Two different, though related, ways how this procedure can be applied are proposed. First, the assignment of an energy function that has a minimum in a closed curve, i.e., with the shape of a Mexican sombrero. Second, the use of a damping matrix that changes "sign" according to the position of the state trajectory relative to the desired orbit, that is, pumping or dissipating energy. The proposed methodologies are illustrated with the example of the induction motor and prove that it yields the industry standard field oriented control.

Small disturbances can trigger cascading failures in power grids

With the sharp increase of power demand, large-scale blackouts in power grids occur frequently around the world. Cascading failures are the main causes of network outages. Therefore, revealing the complicated cascade mechanism in grids is conducive to design the efficient policy to restrain the failures and further ensure a stable supply of power to users. Motivated by the recent advances of network dynamics, we proposed a framework based Lyapunov stability to analyze the dynamically induced cascading failures in complex networks. We abandoned the assumption that the network is stable in traditional static failure models and then detected that small disturbances actually can trigger cascading failures in unstable networks. What's worse, such failure usually accompanied the overload failure of lines during the equilibriums conversion process. Through the simulation analysis of the Spanish grid, we summarized that the features of this new failure mode include low incidence, large destructiveness, and fast propagation speed. And it usually tends to occur first in edge nodes and subsequently propagate to the central nodes. These features are consistent with the empirical observation of outages in practice.

Hybrid Metal-Dielectric Plasmonic Zero Mode Waveguide for Enhanced Single Molecule Detection

We fabricated hybrid metal-dielectric nanoantennas and measured their optical response at three different wavelengths. The nanostructure is fabricated on a bilayer film formed by the sequential deposition of silicon and gold on a transparent substrate. The optical characterization is done via fluorescence measurements. We characterized the fluorescence enhancement, as well as the lifetime and detection volume reduction for each wavelength. We observe that the hybrid metal-dielectric nanoantennas behave as enhanced Zero Mode Waveguides in the near-infrared spectral region. Their detection volume is such that they can perform enhanced single-molecule detection at tens of microM. However, a wavelength blue-shift of 40 nm dramatically decreases the performance of the nanoantennas. We compared their behavior with that of a golden ZMW, and we verified that the dielectric silicon layer improves the design. We interpreted the experimental observations with the help of numerical simulations. In addition, the simulations showed that the field enhancement of the structure highly depends on the incoming beam: tightly focused beams yield lower field enhancements than plane-waves.

On-Chip Chiral Single-Photon Interface: Isolation and Unidirectional Emission

Chiral quantum systems have received intensive attention in fundamental physics and applications in quantum information processing including optical isolation and photon unidirectional emission. Here, we design an on-chip emitter-resonator system with strong chiral light-matter interaction for a chiral single-photon interface. The system includes a microring resonator with a strong evanescent field and a near-unity optical chirality along both of the whole outside and inside walls, allowing a strong and chiral coupling of the Whispering-Gallery mode to a quantum emitter. By initializing a quantum dot in a specific spin ground state or shifting the transition energy with a polarization-selective optical Stark effect, we show a broadband optical isolation at the single-photon level over several GHz. Furthermore, a quantum emitter chirally coupling to the microring resonator can emit single photons unidirectionally. Our protocol paves a way to realize multifunctional chiral single-photon interface in on-chip quantum information processing and quantum networks.

Edge-Semantic Learning Strategy for Layout Estimation in Indoor Environment

Visual cognition of the indoor environment can benefit from the spatial layout estimation, which is to represent an indoor scene with a 2D box on a monocular image. In this paper, we propose to fully exploit the edge and semantic information of a room image for layout estimation. More specifically, we present an encoder-decoder network with shared encoder and two separate decoders, which are composed of multiple deconvolution (transposed convolution) layers, to jointly learn the edge maps and semantic labels of a room image. We combine these two network predictions in a scoring function to evaluate the quality of the layouts, which are generated by ray sampling and from a predefined layout pool. Guided by the scoring function, we apply a novel refinement strategy to further optimize the layout hypotheses. Experimental results show that the proposed network can yield accurate estimates of edge maps and semantic labels. By fully utilizing the two different types of labels, the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art layout estimation performance on benchmark datasets.

An Adaptive Observer for Sensorless Control of the Levitated Ball Using Signal Injection

In this paper we address the problem of sensorless control of the 1-DOF magnetic levitation system. Assuming that only the current and the voltage are measurable, we design an adaptive state observer using the technique of signal injection. Our main contribution is to propose a new filter to identify the virtual output generated by the signal injection. It is shown that this filter, designed using the dynamic regressor extension and mixing estimator, outperforms the classical one. Two additional features of the proposed observer are that (i) it does not require the knowledge of the electrical resistance, which is also estimated on-line and (ii) exponential convergence to a tunable residual set is guaranteed without excitation assumptions. The observer is then applied, in a certainty equivalent way, to a full state-feedback control law to obtain the sensorless controller, whose performance is assessed via simulations and experiments.

On State Observers for Nonlinear Systems: A New Design and a Unifying Framework

In this paper we propose a new observer design technique for nonlinear systems. It combines the well-known Kazantzis-Kravaris-Luenberger observer and the recently introduced parameter estimation-based observer, which become special cases of it---extending the realm of applicability of both methods. A second contribution of the paper is the proof that these designs can be recast as particular cases of immersion and invariance observers---providing in this way a unified framework for their analysis and design. Simulation results of a physical system that illustrates the superior performance of the proposed observer compared to other existing observers are presented.

SSE Lossless Compression Method for the Text of the Insignificance of the Lines Order

There is a special type of text which the order of the rows makes no difference (e.g., a word list). To compress these special texts, the traditional lossless compression method is not the ideal choice. A new method that can achieve better compression results for this type of texts is proposed. The texts are pre-processed by a method named SSE and are then compressed through the traditional lossless compression method. Comparison shows that an improved compression result is achieved.

Energy Efficient Resource Allocation for Time-Varying OFDMA Relay Systems with Hybrid Energy Supplies

This paper investigates the energy efficient resource allocation for orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) relay systems, where the system is supplied by the conventional utility grid and a renewable energy generator equipped with a storage device. The optimal usage of radio resource depends on the characteristics of the renewable energy generation and the mobile traffic, which exhibit both temporal and spatial diversities. Lyapunov optimization method is used to decompose the problem into the joint flow control, radio resource allocation and energy management without knowing a priori knowledge of system statistics. It is proven that the proposed algorithm can result in close-to-optimal performance with capacity limited data buffer and storage device. Simulation results show that the flexible tradeoff between the system utility and the conventional energy consumption can be achieved. Compared with other schemes, the proposed algorithm demonstrates better performance.
