Transfer-based Adversarial Poisoning Attacks for Online (MIMO-)Deep Receviers

Recently, the design of wireless receivers using deep neural networks (DNNs), known as deep receivers, has attracted extensive attention for ensuring reliable communication in complex channel environments. To adapt quickly to dynamic channels, online learning has been adopted to update the weights of deep receivers with over-the-air data (e.g., pilots). However, the fragility of neural models and the openness of wireless channels expose these systems to malicious attacks. To this end, understanding these attack methods is essential for robust receiver design. In this paper, we propose a transfer-based adversarial poisoning attack method for online receivers. Without knowledge of the attack target, adversarial perturbations are injected to the pilots, poisoning the online deep receiver and impairing its ability to adapt to dynamic channels and nonlinear effects. In particular, our attack method targets Deep Soft Interference Cancellation (DeepSIC)[1] using online meta-learning. As a classical model-driven deep receiver, DeepSIC incorporates wireless domain knowledge into its architecture. This integration allows it to adapt efficiently to time-varying channels with only a small number of pilots, achieving optimal performance in a multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) scenario. The deep receiver in this scenario has a number of applications in the field of wireless communication, which motivates our study of the attack methods targeting it. Specifically, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our attack in simulations on synthetic linear, synthetic nonlinear, static, and COST 2100 channels. Simulation results indicate that the proposed poisoning attack significantly reduces the performance of online receivers in rapidly changing scenarios.

UAV-RIS-Aided Space-Air-Ground Integrated Network: Interference Alignment Design and DoF Analysis

In space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN), receivers experience diverse interference from both the satellite and terrestrial transmitters. The heterogeneous structure of SAGIN poses challenges for traditional interference management (IM) schemes to effectively mitigate interference. To address this, a novel UAV-RIS-aided IM scheme is proposed for SAGIN, where different types of channel state information (CSI) including no CSI, instantaneous CSI, and delayed CSI, are considered. According to the types of CSI, interference alignment, beamforming, and space-time precoding are designed at the satellite and terrestrial transmitter side, and meanwhile, the UAV-RIS is introduced for cooperating interference elimination process. Additionally, the degrees of freedom (DoF) obtained by the proposed IM scheme are discussed in depth when the number of antennas on the satellite side is insufficient. Simulation results show that the proposed IM scheme improves the system capacity in different CSI scenarios, and the performance is better than the existing IM benchmarks without UAV-RIS.

Time-Frequency Analysis based Deep Interference Classification for Frequency Hopping System

It is known that, interference classification plays an important role in protecting the authorized communication system and avoiding its performance degradation in the hostile environment. In this paper, the interference classification problem for the frequency hopping communication system is discussed. Considering the possibility of presence multiple interferences in the frequency hopping system, in order to fully extract effective features of the interferences from the received signals, the linear and bilinear transform based composite time-frequency analysis method is adopted. Then the time-frequency spectrograms obtained from the time-frequency analysis are constructed as matching pairs and input to the deep neural network for classification. In particular, the Siamese neural network is used as the classifier, where the paired spectrograms are input into the two sub-networks of the deep networks, and these two sub-networks extract the features of the paired spectrograms for interference type classification. The simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm can obtain higher classification accuracy than both traditional single time-frequency representation based approach and the AlexNet transfer learning or convolutional neural network based methods.

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Joint Cooperative Spectrum Sensing and Channel Access in Cognitive UAV Networks

This paper studies the problem of distributed spectrum/channel access for cognitive radio-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles (CUAVs) that overlay upon primary channels. Under the framework of cooperative spectrum sensing and opportunistic transmission, a one-shot optimization problem for channel allocation, aiming to maximize the expected cumulative weighted reward of multiple CUAVs, is formulated. To handle the uncertainty due to the lack of prior knowledge about the primary user activities as well as the lack of the channel-access coordinator, the original problem is cast into a competition and cooperation hybrid multi-agent reinforcement learning (CCH-MARL) problem in the framework of Markov game (MG). Then, a value-iteration-based RL algorithm, which features upper confidence bound-Hoeffding (UCB-H) strategy searching, is proposed by treating each CUAV as an independent learner (IL). To address the curse of dimensionality, the UCB-H strategy is further extended with a double deep Q-network (DDQN). Numerical simulations show that the proposed algorithms are able to efficiently converge to stable strategies, and significantly improve the network performance when compared with the benchmark algorithms such as the vanilla Q-learning and DDQN algorithms.

Retrospective Interference Regeneration Schemes for Relay-Aided K-user MIMO Downlink Networks

To accommodate the explosive growth of the Internet-of-Things (IoT), incorporating interference alignment (IA) into existing multiple access (MA) schemes is under investigation. However, when it is applied in MIMO networks to improve the system compacity, the incoming problem regarding information delay arises which does not meet the requirement of low-latency. Therefore, in this paper, we first propose a new metric, degree of delay (DoD), to quantify the issue of information delay, and characterize DoD for three typical transmission schemes, i.e., TDMA, beamforming based TDMA (BD-TDMA), and retrospective interference alignment (RIA). By analyzing DoD in these schemes, its value mainly depends on three factors, i.e., delay sensitive factor, size of data set, and queueing delay slot. The first two reflect the relationship between quality of service (QoS) and information delay sensitivity, and normalize time cost for each symbol, respectively. These two factors are independent of the transmission schemes, and thus we aim to reduce the queueing delay slot to improve DoD. Herein, three novel joint IA schemes are proposed for MIMO downlink networks with different number of users. That is, hybrid antenna array based partial interference elimination and retrospective interference regeneration scheme (HAA-PIE-RIR), HAA based improved PIE and RIR scheme (HAA-IPIE-RIR), and HAA based cyclic interference elimination and RIR scheme (HAA-CIE-RIR). Based on the first scheme, the second scheme extends the application scenarios from $2$-user to $K$-user while causing heavy computational burden. The third scheme relieves such computational burden, though it has certain degree of freedom (DoF) loss due to insufficient utilization of space resources.

Two New Kinds of Interference Alignment Schemes for Cellular K-user MIMO Downlink Networks

It is known that interference alignment (IA) plays an important role in improving the degree of freedom (DoF) of multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) systems. However, most of the traditional IA schemes suffer from the high computational complexity and require the global and instantaneous channel state information (CSI), both of which make them difficult to be extended to cellular MIMO systems. To handle these issues, two new interference alignment schemes, i.e., the retrospective interference regeneration (RIR) scheme and the beamforming based distributed retrospective interference alignment (B-DRIA) scheme, are proposed for cellular K-user MIMO downlink networks. For the RIR scheme, it adopts interference elimination algorithm to erase redundant symbols in inter-cell interference (ICI) signals, and then uses interference regeneration algorithm to avoid secondary interference. The RIR scheme obtains greater DoF gain than the retrospective interference alignment (RIA) scheme, but incurs performance degradation when the transceiver antennas ratio (TAR) approaches 1. Therefore, the B-DRIA scheme is further proposed. For the B-DRIA scheme, the cellular beamforming matrix is introduced to eliminate the ICI, and meanwhile distributed retrospective interference alignment algorithm is adopted to align inter-user interference (IUI). The simulation results show that the B-DRIA scheme obtains larger DoF than the RIR scheme locally. Specifically, when TAR approaches 1, two schemes obtain the same DoF. While TAR approaches 2, the DoF of the B-DRIA scheme is superior than the RIR scheme.

Joint Transmit Precoding and Reflect Beamforming Design for IRS-Assisted MIMO Cognitive Radio Systems

Cognitive radio (CR) is an effective solution to improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of wireless communications by allowing the secondary users (SUs) to share spectrum with primary users (PUs). Meanwhile, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been recently proposed as a promising approach to enhance SE and energy efficiency (EE) of wireless communication systems through intelligently reconfiguring the channel environment. In this paper, we consider an IRS-assisted downlink CR system, in which a secondary access point (SAP) communicates with multiple SUs without affecting multiple PUs in the primary network and all nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. Our design objective is to maximize the achievable weighted sum rate (WSR) of SUs subject to the total transmit power constraint at the SAP and the interference constraints at PUs, by jointly optimizing the transmit precoding at the SAP and the reflecting coefficients at the IRS. To deal with the complex objective function, the problem is reformulated by employing the well-known weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE) method and an alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm is proposed. Furthermore, a special scenario with only one PU is considered and AO algorithm is adopted again. It is worth mentioning that the proposed algorithm has a much lower computational complexity than the above algorithm without the performance loss. Finally, some numerical simulations have been provided to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other benchmark schemes.

Time-Frequency Analysis based Blind Modulation Classification for Multiple-Antenna Systems

Blind modulation classification is an important step to implement cognitive radio networks. The multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique is widely used in military and civil communication systems. Due to the lack of prior information about channel parameters and the overlapping of signals in the MIMO systems, the traditional likelihood-based and feature-based approaches cannot be applied in these scenarios directly. Hence, in this paper, to resolve the problem of blind modulation classification in MIMO systems, the time-frequency analysis method based on the windowed short-time Fourier transform is used to analyse the time-frequency characteristics of time-domain modulated signals. Then the extracted time-frequency characteristics are converted into RGB spectrogram images, and the convolutional neural network based on transfer learning is applied to classify the modulation types according to the RGB spectrogram images. Finally, a decision fusion module is used to fuse the classification results of all the receive antennas. Through simulations, we analyse the classification performance at different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), the results indicate that, for the single-input single-output (SISO) network, our proposed scheme can achieve 92.37% and 99.12% average classification accuracy at SNRs of -4 dB and 10 dB, respectively. For the MIMO network, our scheme achieves 80.42% and 87.92% average classification accuracy at -4 dB and 10 dB, respectively. This outperforms the existing classification methods based on baseband signals.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Secure Wireless Communications with Multiple-Transmit and Multiple-Receive Antennas

In this paper, we propose intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) assisted secure wireless communications with multi-input and multi-output antennas (IRS-MIMOME). The considered scenario is an access point (AP) equipped with multiple antennas communicates with a multi-antenna enabled legitimate user in the downlink at the present of an eavesdropper configured with multiple antennas. Particularly, the joint optimization of the transmit covariance matrix at the AP and the reflecting coefficients at the IRS to maximize the secrecy rate for the IRS-MIMOME system is investigated, with two different assumptions on the phase shifting capabilities at the IRS, i.e., the IRS has the continuous reflecting coefficients and the IRS has the discrete reflecting coefficients. For the former case, due to the non-convexity of the formulated problem, an alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm is proposed, i.e., for given the reflecting coefficients at the IRS, the successive convex approximation (SCA)-based algorithm is used to solve the transmit covariance matrix optimization, while given the transmit covariance matrix at the AP, alternative optimization is used again in individually optimizing of each reflecting coefficient at the IRS with other fixed reflecting coefficients. For the individual reflecting coefficient optimization, the close-form or an interval of the optimal solution is provided. Then, the proposed algorithm is extended to the discrete reflecting coefficient model at the IRS. Finally, some numerical simulations have been done to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other benchmark schemes.

Monthly electricity consumption forecasting by the fruit fly optimization algorithm enhanced Holt-Winters smoothing method

The electricity consumption forecasting is a critical component of the intelligent power system. And accurate monthly electricity consumption forecasting, as one of the the medium and long term electricity consumption forecasting problems, plays an important role in dispatching and management for electric power systems. Although there are many studies for this problem, large sample data set is generally required to obtain higher prediction accuracy, and the prediction performance become worse when only a little data is available. However, in practical, mostly we experience the problem of insufficient sample data and how to accurately forecast the monthly electricity consumption with limited sample data is a challenge task. The Holt-Winters exponential smoothing method often used to forecast periodic series due to low demand for training data and high accuracy for forecasting. In this paper, based on Holt-Winters exponential smoothing method, we propose a hybrid forecasting model named FOA-MHW. The main idea is that, we use fruit fly optimization algorithm to select smoothing parameters for Holt-Winters exponential smoothing method. Besides, electricity consumption data of a city in China is used to comprehensively evaluate the forecasting performance of the proposed model. The results indicate that our model can significantly improve the accuracy of monthly electricity consumption forecasting even in the case that only a small number of training data is available.

Performance Analysis and Optimization of Cooperative Full-Duplex D2D Communication Underlaying Cellular Networks

This paper investigates the cooperative full-duplex device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying cellular network, where the cellular user (CU) acts as a full-duplex relay to assist the D2D communication. To simultaneously support D2D relaying and uplink transmission, superposition coding and successive interference cancellation are adopted at the CU and the D2D receiver, respectively. The achievable rate region and joint outage probability are derived to characterize the performance of the considered system. An optimal power allocation scheme is proposed to maximize the minimum achievable rate. Besides, by analyzing the upper bound of the joint outage probability, we study a suboptimal power allocation to improve the outage performance. The simulation results confirm the theoretical analysis and the advantages of the proposed power allocation schemes.

Energy-delay-cost Tradeoff for Task Offloading in Imbalanced Edge Cloud Based Computing

In this paper, the imbalance edge cloud based computing offloading for multiple mobile users (MUs) with multiple tasks per MU is studied. In which, several edge cloud servers (ECSs) are shared and accessed by multiple wireless access points (APs) with the backhaul links, and each MU has multiple computing intensive and latency critical tasks should be offloaded to execute, which involves both the AP association and ECS selection, with the objective of minimizing the offloading cost. Distinguished with existing research, besides the transmission delay and energy consumption from MU to AP, the ECS access-cost which characterizes the ECS access delay and (or) resource using cost is introduced, thus finally formulates the delay-energy-cost tradeoff based offloading cost criteria, for the MUs' offloading decision and resource allocation problems. In specific, in our system, the ECS access-cost depends on both the AP and ECS, which reflects the effects of different backhaul techniques used by these APs, and their negotiated payments of ECS resource using under different service level agreements. Both problems of minimizing the sum offloading costs for all MUs (efficiency-based) and minimizing the maximal offloading cost per MU (fairness-based) are discussed. Since these problems are all NP-hard. Therefore, some centralized and distributed heuristic algorithms are proposed to find the suboptimal solutions. Further analysis and numerical results are presented at last to demonstrate the performance of these algorithms from several aspects, such as efficiency, complexity and fairness.

On the Degrees of Freedom of MIMO X Networks with Non-Cooperation Transmitters

Due to limited backhaul/feedback link capacity and channel state information (CSI) feedback delay, obtaining global and instantaneous channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is a main obstacle in practice. In this paper, novel transmission schemes are proposed for a class of interference networks that can achieve new trade-off regions between the sum of degrees of freedom (sum-DoF) and CSI feedback delay with distributed and temperately-delayed CSIT. More specifically, a distributed space-time interference alignment (STIA) scheme is proposed for the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) X channel via a novel precoding method called Cyclic Zero-padding. The achieved sum-DoFs herein for certain antenna configurations are greater than the best known sum-DoFs in literature with delayed CSIT. Furthermore, we propose a distributed retrospective interference alignment (RIA) scheme that achieves more than 1 sum-DoF for the K-user single-input single-output (SISO) X network. Finally, we extend the distributed STIA to the MxN user multiple-input single-output (MISO) X network where each transmitter has N-1 antennas and each receiver has a single antenna, yielding the same sum-DoF as that in the global and instantaneous CSIT case. The discussion and the result of the MISO X network can be extended to the MIMO case due to spatial scale invariance property.
