Bidirectional LSTM-CRF Attention-based Model for Chinese Word Segmentation

Chinese word segmentation (CWS) is the basic of Chinese natural language processing (NLP). The quality of word segmentation will directly affect the rest of NLP tasks. Recently, with the artificial intelligence tide rising again, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network, as one of easily modeling in sequence, has been widely utilized in various kinds of NLP tasks, and functions well. Attention mechanism is an ingenious method to solve the memory compression problem on LSTM. Furthermore, inspired by the powerful abilities of bidirectional LSTM models for modeling sequence and CRF model for decoding, we propose a Bidirectional LSTM-CRF Attention-based Model in this paper. Experiments on PKU and MSRA benchmark datasets show that our model performs better than the baseline methods modeling by other neural networks.

ABEM: An Adaptive Agent-based Evolutionary Approach for Mining Influencers in Online Social Networks

A key step in influence maximization in online social networks is the identification of a small number of users, known as influencers, who are able to spread influence quickly and widely to other users. The evolving nature of the topological structure of these networks makes it difficult to locate and identify these influencers. In this paper, we propose an adaptive agent-based evolutionary approach to address this problem in the context of both static and dynamic networks. This approach is shown to be able to adapt the solution as the network evolves. It is also applicable to large-scale networks due to its distributed framework. Evaluation of our approach is performed by using both synthetic networks and real-world datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art seeding algorithms in terms of maximizing influence.

The 4th International Workshop on Smart Simulation and Modelling for Complex Systems

Computer-based modelling and simulation have become useful tools to facilitate humans to understand systems in different domains, such as physics, astrophysics, chemistry, biology, economics, engineering and social science. A complex system is featured with a large number of interacting components (agents, processes, etc.), whose aggregate activities are nonlinear and self-organized. Complex systems are hard to be simulated or modelled by using traditional computational approaches due to complex relationships among system components, distributed features of resources, and dynamics of environments. Meanwhile, smart systems such as multi-agent systems have demonstrated advantages and great potentials in modelling and simulating complex systems.

Privacy Information Classification: A Hybrid Approach

A large amount of information has been published to online social networks every day. Individual privacy-related information is also possibly disclosed unconsciously by the end-users. Identifying privacy-related data and protecting the online social network users from privacy leakage turn out to be significant. Under such a motivation, this study aims to propose and develop a hybrid privacy classification approach to detect and classify privacy information from OSNs. The proposed hybrid approach employs both deep learning models and ontology-based models for privacy-related information extraction. Extensive experiments are conducted to validate the proposed hybrid approach, and the empirical results demonstrate its superiority in assisting online social network users against privacy leakage.

Improving positioning accuracy of the mobile laser scanning in GPS-denied environments: An experimental case study

The positioning accuracy of the mobile laser scanning (MLS) system can reach the level of centimeter under the conditions where GPS works normally. However, in GPS-denied environments this accuracy can be reduced to the decimeter or even the meter level because the observation mode errors and the boresight alignment errors of MLS cannot be calibrated or corrected by the GPS signal. To bridge this research gap, this paper proposes a novel technique that appropriately incorporates the robust weight total least squares (RWTLS) and the full information maximum likelihood optimal estimation (FIMLOE) to improve the positioning accuracy of the MLS system under GPS-denied environment. First of all, the coordinate transformation relationship and the observation parameters vector of MLS system are established. Secondly, the RWTLS algorithm is used to correct the 3D point observation model; then the uncertainty propagation parameter vector and the boresight alignment errors between the laser scanner frame and the IMU frame are calibrated by FIMLOE. Lastly, experimental investigation in indoor scenarios was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is able to significantly improve the positioning accuracy of an MLS system in GPS-denied environments.

Achieving competitive advantage in academia through early career coauthorship with top scientists

We quantify the long term impact that the coauthorship with established top-cited scientists has on the career of junior researchers in four different scientific disciplines. Through matched pair analysis, we find that junior researchers who coauthor work with top scientists enjoy a persistent competitive advantage throughout the rest of their careers with respect to peers with similar early career profiles. Such a competitive advantage materialises as a higher probability of repeatedly coauthoring work with top-cited scientists, and, ultimately, as a higher probability of becoming one. Notably, we find that the coauthorship with a top scientist has the strongest impact on the careers of junior researchers affiliated with less prestigious institutions. As a consequence, we argue that such institutions may hold vast amounts of untapped potential, which may be realised by improving access to top scientists.

Offline Biases in Online Platforms: a Study of Diversity and Homophily in Airbnb

How diverse are sharing economy platforms? Are they fair marketplaces, where all participants operate on a level playing field, or are they large-scale online aggregators of offline human biases? Often portrayed as easy-to-access digital spaces whose participants receive equal opportunities, such platforms have recently come under fire due to reports of discriminatory behaviours among their users, and have been associated with gentrification phenomena that exacerbate preexisting inequalities along racial lines. In this paper, we focus on the Airbnb sharing economy platform, and analyse the diversity of its user base across five large cities. We find it to be predominantly young, female, and white. Notably, we find this to be true even in cities with a diverse racial composition. We then introduce a method based on the statistical analysis of networks to quantify behaviours of homophily, heterophily and avoidance between Airbnb hosts and guests. Depending on cities and property types, we do find signals of such behaviours relating both to race and gender. We use these findings to provide platform design recommendations, aimed at exposing and possibly reducing the biases we detect, in support of a more inclusive growth of sharing economy platforms.

A Characterization of Tracially Nuclear C*-algebras

We give two characterizations of tracially nuclear C*-algebras. The first is that the finite summand of the second dual is hyperfinite. The second is in terms of a variant of the weak* uniqueness property. The necessary condition holds for all tracially nuclear C*-algebras. When the algebra is separable, we prove the sufficiency.

Infectivity Enhances Prediction of Viral Cascades in Twitter

Models of contagion dynamics, originally developed for infectious diseases, have proven relevant to the study of information, news, and political opinions in online social systems. Modelling diffusion processes and predicting viral information cascades are important problems in network science. Yet, many studies of information cascades neglect the variation in infectivity across different pieces of information. Here, we employ early-time observations of online cascades to estimate the infectivity of distinct pieces of information. Using simulations and data from real-world Twitter retweets, we demonstrate that these estimated infectivities can be used to improve predictions about the virality of an information cascade. Developing our simulations to mimic the real-world data, we consider the effect of the limited effective time for transmission of a cascade and demonstrate that a simple model for slow but non-negligible decay of the infectivity captures the essential properties of retweet distributions. These results demonstrate the interplay between the intrinsic infectivity of a tweet and the complex network environment within which it diffuses, strongly influencing the likelihood of becoming a viral cascade.

Reciprocity and success in academic careers

The growing importance of citation-based bibliometric indicators in shaping the prospects of academic careers incentivizes scientists to boost the numbers of citations they receive. Whereas the exploitation of self-citations has been extensively documented, the impact of reciprocated citations has not yet been studied. We study reciprocity in a citation network of authors, and compare it with the average reciprocity computed in an ensemble of null network models. We show that obtaining citations through reciprocity correlates negatively with a successful career in the long term. Nevertheless, at the aggregate level we show evidence of a steady increase in reciprocity over the years, largely fuelled by the exchange of citations between coauthors. Our results characterize the structure of author networks in a time of increasing emphasis on citation-based indicators, and we discuss their implications towards a fairer assessment of academic impact.

Kill Two Birds With One Stone: Boosting Both Object Detection Accuracy and Speed With adaptive Patch-of-Interest Composition

Object detection is an important yet challenging task in video understanding & analysis, where one major challenge lies in the proper balance between two contradictive factors: detection accuracy and detection speed. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive patch-of-interest composition approach for boosting both the accuracy and speed for object detection. The proposed approach first extracts patches in a video frame which have the potential to include objects-of-interest. Then, an adaptive composition process is introduced to compose the extracted patches into an optimal number of sub-frames for object detection. With this process, we are able to maintain the resolution of the original frame during object detection (for guaranteeing the accuracy), while minimizing the number of inputs in detection (for boosting the speed). Experimental results on various datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Topological Orbit Dimension of MF $C^*$-algebras

This paper is a continuation of our work on D. Voiculescu's topological free entropy dimension in unital C*-algebras. In this paper we first prove the topological free entropy dimension of a MF-nuclear and inner QD algebra is irrelevant to its generating family. Then we give the relation between the topological orbit dimension $K_{top}^2$ and the modified free orbit dimension$ K_2^2$ by using MF-traces. We also introduce a new invariant $K_{top}^3$ which is a modification of the topological orbit dimension $K_{top}^2$ when$ K_{top}^2$ is defined. As the applications of $K_{top}^3$, We prove that$ K_{top}^3(A)=0$ if A has property $ c^*-Γ$ and has no finite-dimensional representations. We also give the definition of property MF-c^*-Γ. We then conclude that, for the unital MF $ C^*$-algebra with no finite-dimensional representations, if A has property MF-c*-Γ, then $K_{top}^3(A)=0$.

Crossed Products and MF algebras

We prove that the crossed product AxG of a unital finitely generated MF algebra A by a discrete finitely generated amenable residually finite group G is an MF algebra, provided that the action is almost periodic. This generalizes a result of Hadwin and Shen. We also construct two examples of crossed product C*-algebras whose BDF Ext semigroups are not groups.

The Similarity Degree of Some C*-algebras

We define the class of weakly approximately divisible unital C*-algebras and show that this class is closed under direct sums, direct limits, any tensor product with any C*-algebra, and quotients. A nuclear C*-algebra is weakly approximately divisible if and only if it has no finite-dimensional representations. We also show that Pisier's similarity degree of a weakly approximately divisible C*-algebra is at most 5.

A Note on Approximately Divisible C$^*$-algebras

Let $\mathcal A$ be a separable, unital, approximately divisible C$^*$-algebra. We show that $\mathcal A$ is generated by two self-adjoint elements and the topological free entropy dimension of any finite generating set of $\mathcal A$ is less than or equal to 1. In addition, we show that the similarity degree of $\mathcal A$ is at most 5. Thus an approximately divisible C$^*$-algebra has an affirmative answer to Kadison's similarity problem.

A Note on Approximate Liftings

In this paper, we prove approximate lifting results in the C$^{\ast}$-algebra and von Neumann algebra settings. In the C$^{\ast}$-algebra setting, we show that two (weakly) semiprojective unital C*-algebras, each generated by $n$ projections, can be glued together with partial isometries to define a larger (weakly) semiprojective algebra. In the von Neumann algebra setting, we prove lifting theorems for trace-preserving *-homomorphisms from abelian von Neumann algebras or hyperfinite von Neumann algebras into ultraproducts. We also extend a classical result of S. Sakai \cite{sakai} by showing that a tracial ultraproduct of C*-algebras is a von Neumann algebra, which yields a generalization of Lin's theorem \cite{Lin} on almost commuting selfadjoint operators with respect to $\Vert\cdot\Vert_{p}$ on any unital C*-algebra with trace.

An Elementary Proof of the Free-additivity of Voiculescu's Free Entropy

D. Voiculescu [2] proved that a standard family of independent random unitary k by k matrices and a constant k by k unitary matrix is asymtotically free as k goes to infinity. This result was a key ingredient in Voiculescu's proof [3] that his free entropy is additive when the variables are free. In this paper, we give a very elementary proof of a more detailed version of this result [2].
