Electrical Detection of Spin Backflow from an Antiferromagnetic Insulator/Y3Fe5O12 Interface

Spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) has been observed in Pt/NiO/Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) heterostructures with characteristics very different from those in Pt/YIG. We show that the SMR in Pt/NiO/YIG strongly correlates with spin conductance, both sharing very strong temperature dependence due to antiferromagnetic magnons and spin fluctuation. This phenomenon indicates that spin current generated by spin Hall effect in the Pt transmits through the insulating NiO and is reflected from the NiO/YIG interface. Inverted SMR has been observed below a temperature which increases with the NiO thickness, suggesting spin-flip reflection from the antiferromagnetic NiO exchange coupled with the YIG.

Universal domain wall dynamics under electric field in Ta/CoFeB/MgO devices with perpendicular anisotropy

Electric field effects in ferromagnetic/oxide dielectric structures provide a new route to control domain wall (DW) dynamics with low power dissipation. However, electric field effects on DW velocities have only been observed so far in the creep regime where DW velocities are low due to strong interactions with pinning sites. Here, we show gate voltage modulation of DW velocities ranging from the creep to the flow regime in Ta/Co40Fe40B20/MgO/TiO2 structures with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We demonstrate a universal description of the role of applied electric fields in the various pinning dependent regimes by taking into account an effective magnetic field being linear with the electric field. In addition, the electric field effect is found to change sign in the Walker regime. Our work opens new opportunities for the study and optimization of electric field effect at ferromagnetic metal/insulator interfaces.

Temperature Dependence of Angular Momentum Transport Across Interfaces

Angular momentum transport in magnetic multilayered structures plays a central role in spintronic physics and devices. The angular momentum currents or spin currents are carried by either quasi-particles such as electrons and magnons, or by macroscopic order parameters such as local magnetization of ferromagnets. Based on the generic interface exchange interaction, we develop a microscopic theory that describes interfacial spin conductance for various interfaces among non-magnetic metals, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic insulators. Spin conductance and its temperature dependence are obtained for different spin batteries including spin pumping, temperature gradient and spin Hall effect. As an application of our theory, we calculate the spin current in a trilayer made of a ferromagnetic insulator, an antiferromagnetic insulator and a non-magnetic heavy metal. The calculated results on the temperature dependence of spin conductance quantitatively agree with the existing experiments.

Enhancement of Thermally Injected Spin Current through an Antiferromagnetic Insulator

We report large enhancement of thermally injected spin current in normal metal (NM)/antiferromagnet(AF)/yttrium iron garnet(YIG), where a thin AF insulating layer of NiO or CoO can enhance spin current from YIG to a NM by up to a factor of 10. The spin current enhancement in NM/AF/YIG, with a pronounced maximum near the Néel temperature of the thin AF layer, has been found to scale linearly with the spin-mixing conductance at the NM/YIG interface for NM = 3d, 4d, and 5d metals. Calculations of spin current enhancement and spin mixing conductance are qualitatively consistent with the experimental results.

Effect of Spin Accumulation at Co/Pt Interfaces on Anomalous Hall Effect in Pt/Co/Pt Trilayers

As current flows through a Pt/Co/Pt trilayer, spin Hall effect induced by charge current in the Pt layer leads to spin accumulation at the Co/Pt interfaces. Our experiment and calculation show an indication of the effect of spin accumulation at the Co/Pt interfaces on anomalous Hall coefficient in the Pt/Co/Pt sandwich, which depends on the Pt layer thickness and spin diffusion length in Pt layer. The ratio of the longitudinal current in the Pt cap layer due to anomalous Hall effect to the injected transverse current in the Co layer increases with the Pt cap layer thickness.

Interfacial charge accumulation effect on magnetic domain wall nucleation and propagation in a Pt/Co/Pt/Al2O3 structure

We report direct observation of charge accumulation effect on magnetization reversal in a Pt/Co(0.5 nm)/Pt(0.5 nm)/Al2O3 structure with perpendicular anisotropy. By imaging magnetic domain with polar Kerr microscopy, we evidence that positive charges accumulating at the Pt/Al2O3 interface result in favoring magnetic domain wall propagation, while negative charges hinder domain wall nucleation and propagation. Our results suggest that magnetic properties in Co layer can be strongly influenced by 5d electron accumulation/depletion in an ultrathin Pt layer.

Giant thermoelectric effect in Al2O3 magnetic tunnel junctions

Thermoelectric effects in magnetic nanostructures and the so-called spin caloritronics are attracting much interest. Indeed it provides a new way to control and manipulate spin currents which are key elements of spin-based electronics. Here we report on giant magnetothermoelectric effect in Al2O3 magnetic tunnel junctions. The thermovoltage in this geometry can reach 1 mV. Moreover a magneto-thermovoltage effect could be measured with ratio similar to the tunnel magnetoresistance ratio. The Seebeck coefficient can then be tuned by changing the relative magnetization orientation of the two magnetic layers in the tunnel junction. Therefore our experiments extend the range of spintronic devices application to thermoelectricity and provide a crucial piece of information for understanding the physics of thermal spin transport.

Asymmetric magnetization splitting in diamond domain structure: Dependence on exchange interaction and anisotropy

The distributions of magnetization orientation for both Landau and diamond domain structures in nano-rectangles have been investigated by micromagnetic simulation with various exchange coefficient and anisotropy constant. Both symmetric and asymmetric magnetization splitting are found in diamond domain structure, as well as only symmetric magnetization splitting in Landau structure. In the Landau structure, the splitting angle increases with the exchange coefficient but decreases slightly with the anisotropy constant, suggesting that the exchange interaction mainly contributes to the magnetization splitting in Landau structure. However in the diamond structure, the splitting angle increases with the anisotropy constant but derceases with the exchange coefficient, indicating that the magnetization splitting in diamond structure is resulted from magnetic anisotropy.

A Novel Temperature-Induced Magnetization Transition in Pt/Co/Pt Sandwiches

It is found in the Pt/Co/Pt(111) sandwiches that perpendicular magnetic anisotropy weakens associated with the dramatic magnetization enhancement as the temperature decreases below a critical temperature, T_cri, which increases with the Pt overlayer thickness t_Pt. For the sandwich with enough thick Pt overlayer, it trends to an unusual state with weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the absence of obvious easy direction behavior at low temperature. It suggests that Pt is more significantly polarized in the film with thicker Pt overlayer. The results reveal the strong influence of both thick nonmagnetic coverage and temperature on the electronic structure of the Pt/Co/Pt(111) sandwich.
