WAT: Improve the Worst-class Robustness in Adversarial Training

Deep Neural Networks (DNN) have been shown to be vulnerable to adversarial examples. Adversarial training (AT) is a popular and effective strategy to defend against adversarial attacks. Recent works (Benz et al., 2020; Xu et al., 2021; Tian et al., 2021) have shown that a robust model well-trained by AT exhibits a remarkable robustness disparity among classes, and propose various methods to obtain consistent robust accuracy across classes. Unfortunately, these methods sacrifice a good deal of the average robust accuracy. Accordingly, this paper proposes a novel framework of worst-class adversarial training and leverages no-regret dynamics to solve this problem. Our goal is to obtain a classifier with great performance on worst-class and sacrifice just a little average robust accuracy at the same time. We then rigorously analyze the theoretical properties of our proposed algorithm, and the generalization error bound in terms of the worst-class robust risk. Furthermore, we propose a measurement to evaluate the proposed method in terms of both the average and worst-class accuracies. Experiments on various datasets and networks show that our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

Sub-ppb aerosol detection at a distance of 30 meters by millijoule femtosecond laser pulse filamentation in air

In this work, sub-ppb aerosol detection is achieved by femtosecond laser filament with a single pulse energy of 4 mJ at a distance of 30 m. A concave mirror with an open aperture of 41.4 cm is employed in an off-axis optical system to focus the femtosecond laser beam and collect the fluorescence of NaCl aerosol. The simulation and experimental results show that the astigmatism can be greatly reduced when femtosecond laser beam is incident non-symmetrically on the concave mirror. Compared with the case that femtosecond laser strikes at the center of the concave mirror, the intensity of the optical filament is increased by 69.5 times, and the detection of limit of sodium chloride aerosol is reduced by 86%, which is down to 0.32 ppb. The improved excitation scheme in this work utilizes the nonsymmetrical beam spot on the concave mirror to compensate the non-symmetry induced by the off-axis setup, reducing the astigmatism of the focusing laser beam and improving the aerosol's detection of limit.

PP-OCRv3: More Attempts for the Improvement of Ultra Lightweight OCR System

Optical character recognition (OCR) technology has been widely used in various scenes, as shown in Figure 1. Designing a practical OCR system is still a meaningful but challenging task. In previous work, considering the efficiency and accuracy, we proposed a practical ultra lightweight OCR system (PP-OCR), and an optimized version PP-OCRv2. In order to further improve the performance of PP-OCRv2, a more robust OCR system PP-OCRv3 is proposed in this paper. PP-OCRv3 upgrades the text detection model and text recognition model in 9 aspects based on PP-OCRv2. For text detector, we introduce a PAN module with large receptive field named LK-PAN, a FPN module with residual attention mechanism named RSE-FPN, and DML distillation strategy. For text recognizer, the base model is replaced from CRNN to SVTR, and we introduce lightweight text recognition network SVTR LCNet, guided training of CTC by attention, data augmentation strategy TextConAug, better pre-trained model by self-supervised TextRotNet, UDML, and UIM to accelerate the model and improve the effect. Experiments on real data show that the hmean of PP-OCRv3 is 5% higher than PP-OCRv2 under comparable inference speed. All the above mentioned models are open-sourced and the code is available in the GitHub repository PaddleOCR which is powered by PaddlePaddle.

The Emerging Trends of Multi-Label Learning

Exabytes of data are generated daily by humans, leading to the growing need for new efforts in dealing with the grand challenges for multi-label learning brought by big data. For example, extreme multi-label classification is an active and rapidly growing research area that deals with classification tasks with an extremely large number of classes or labels; utilizing massive data with limited supervision to build a multi-label classification model becomes valuable for practical applications, etc. Besides these, there are tremendous efforts on how to harvest the strong learning capability of deep learning to better capture the label dependencies in multi-label learning, which is the key for deep learning to address real-world classification tasks. However, it is noted that there has been a lack of systemic studies that focus explicitly on analyzing the emerging trends and new challenges of multi-label learning in the era of big data. It is imperative to call for a comprehensive survey to fulfill this mission and delineate future research directions and new applications.

PP-OCRv2: Bag of Tricks for Ultra Lightweight OCR System

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems have been widely used in various of application scenarios. Designing an OCR system is still a challenging task. In previous work, we proposed a practical ultra lightweight OCR system (PP-OCR) to balance the accuracy against the efficiency. In order to improve the accuracy of PP-OCR and keep high efficiency, in this paper, we propose a more robust OCR system, i.e. PP-OCRv2. We introduce bag of tricks to train a better text detector and a better text recognizer, which include Collaborative Mutual Learning (CML), CopyPaste, Lightweight CPUNetwork (LCNet), Unified-Deep Mutual Learning (U-DML) and Enhanced CTCLoss. Experiments on real data show that the precision of PP-OCRv2 is 7% higher than PP-OCR under the same inference cost. It is also comparable to the server models of the PP-OCR which uses ResNet series as backbones. All of the above mentioned models are open-sourced and the code is available in the GitHub repository PaddleOCR which is powered by PaddlePaddle.

Effects of the Crystalline Electric Field in the $KErTe_{2}$ Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate

In this paper, we performed thermodynamic and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements to study low-energy magnetic excitations, which were significantly affected by crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations due to relatively small gaps between the CEF ground state and the excited states. Based on the CEF and mean-field (MF) theories, we analyzed systematically and consistently the ESR experiments and thermodynamic measurements including susceptibility, magnetization, and heat capacity. The CEF parameters were successfully extracted by fitting high-temperature (> 20 K) susceptibilities in the ab-plane and along the c-axis, allowing to determine the Lande factors ($g_{ab,calc}$ = 5.98(7) and $g_{c,calc}$ = 2.73(3)). These values were consistent with the values of Lande factors determined by ESR experiments ($g_{ab,exp}$ = 5.69 and $g_{c,exp}$ = 2.75). By applying the CEF and MF theories to the susceptibility and magnetization results, we estimated the anisotropic spin-exchange energies and found that the CEF excitations in \ce{KErTe2} played a decisive role in the magnetism above 3 K, while the low-temperature magnetism below 10 K was gradually correlated with the anisotropic spin-exchange interactions. The CEF excitations were demonstrated in the low-temperature heat capacity, where both the positions of two broad peaks and their magnetic field dependence well corroborated our calculations. The present study provides a basis to explore the enriched magnetic and electronic properties of the QSL family.

Effective Magnetic Hamiltonian at Finite Temperatures for Rare Earth Chalcogenides

Alkali metal rare-earth chalcogenide $ARECh2$ (A=alkali or monovalent metal, RE=rare earth, Ch=O, S, Se, Te), is a large family of quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidates we discovered recently. Unlike $YbMgGaO4$, most members in the family except for the oxide ones, have relatively small crystalline electric-field (CEF) excitation levels, particularly the first ones. This makes the conventional Curie-Weiss analysis at finite temperatures inapplicable and CEF excitations may play an essential role in understanding the low-energy spin physics. Here we considered an effective magnetic Hamiltonian incorporating CEF excitations and spin-spin interactions, to accurately describe thermodynamics in such a system. By taking $NaYbSe2$ as an example, we were able to analyze magnetic susceptibility, magnetization under pulsed high fields and heat capacity in a systematic and comprehensive way. The analysis allows us to produce accurate anisotropic exchange coupling energies and unambiguously determine a crossover temperature ($\sim$25 K in the case of $NaYbSe2$), below which CEF effects fade away and pure spin-spin interactions stand out. We further validated the effective picture by successfully explaining the anomalous temperature dependence of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectral width. The effective scenario in principle can be generalized to other rare-earth spin systems with small CEF excitations.

PP-OCR: A Practical Ultra Lightweight OCR System

The Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems have been widely used in various of application scenarios, such as office automation (OA) systems, factory automations, online educations, map productions etc. However, OCR is still a challenging task due to the various of text appearances and the demand of computational efficiency. In this paper, we propose a practical ultra lightweight OCR system, i.e., PP-OCR. The overall model size of the PP-OCR is only 3.5M for recognizing 6622 Chinese characters and 2.8M for recognizing 63 alphanumeric symbols, respectively. We introduce a bag of strategies to either enhance the model ability or reduce the model size. The corresponding ablation experiments with the real data are also provided. Meanwhile, several pre-trained models for the Chinese and English recognition are released, including a text detector (97K images are used), a direction classifier (600K images are used) as well as a text recognizer (17.9M images are used). Besides, the proposed PP-OCR are also verified in several other language recognition tasks, including French, Korean, Japanese and German. All of the above mentioned models are open-sourced and the codes are available in the GitHub repository, i.e., https://github.com/PaddlePaddle/PaddleOCR.

Opinion Maximization in Social Trust Networks

Social media sites are now becoming very important platforms for product promotion or marketing campaigns. Therefore, there is broad interest in determining ways to guide a site to react more positively to a product with a limited budget. However, the practical significance of the existing studies on this subject is limited for two reasons. First, most studies have investigated the issue in oversimplified networks in which several important network characteristics are ignored. Second, the opinions of individuals are modeled as bipartite states(e.g., support or not) in numerous studies, however, this setting is too strict for many real scenarios. In this study, we focus on social trust networks(STNs), which have the significant characteristics ignored in the previous studies. We generalized a famed continuous-valued opinion dynamics model for STNs, which is more consistent with real scenarios. We subsequently formalized two novel problems for solving the issue in STNs. Moreover, we developed two matrix-based methods for these two problems and experiments on real-world datasets to demonstrate the practical utility of our methods.

Spectral Domain Z-scan Technique

Characterizing the nonlinear optical properties of various materials plays a prerequisite role in nonlinear optics. Among different methods, the well-known Z-scan technique and the modified versions have been recognized as a simple and accurate method for measuring both the real and imaginary parts of the nonlinear refractive index. However, all the Z-scan methods based on detecting small beam variations put forward a severe restriction on the roughness of materials. Therefore, measuring nonlinear optical properties of highly scattering media still remain challenging. Inspired by the innovation of conventional Z-scan method that converting the wavefront phase shift to the easily measurable spatial pattern in far-field, the alternative spectral domain Z-scan technique was presented in this paper. It has a great potential for highly scattering medium, based on the scattering efficiency is insensitive to the wavelength for Mie scattering as the wavelengths are far smaller than the roughness. Moreover, to demonstrate the advantages of spectral domain Z-scan technique, the nonlinear refraction of polished slides and frosted slides was measured, which agrees well with previous reports.

Pressure induced metallization and possible unconventional superconductivity in spin liquid $NaYbSe_{2}$

Beyond the conventional electron pairing mediated by phonons, high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates is believed to stem from quantum spin liquid (QSL). The unconventional superconductivity by doping a spin liquid/Mott insulator, is a long-sought goal but a principal challenge in condensed matter physics because of the lack of an ideal QSL platform. Here we report the pressure induced metallization and possible unconventional superconductivity in $NaYbSe_{2}$, which belongs to a large and ideal family of triangular lattice spin liquid we revealed recently and is evidenced to possess a QSL ground state. The charge gap of NaYbSe2 is gradually reduced by applying pressures, and at ~20 GPa the crystal jumps into a superconducting (SC) phase with Tc ~ 5.8 K even before the insulating gap is completely closed. The metallization is confirmed by further high-pressure experiments but the sign of superconductivity is not well repeated. No symmetry breaking accompanies the SC transition, as indicated by X-ray diffraction and low-temperature Raman experiments under high pressures. This intrinsically connects QSL and SC phases, and suggests an unconventional superconductivity developed from QSL. We further observed the magnetic-field-tuned superconductor-insulator transition which is analogous to that found in the underdoped cuprate superconductor $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$. The study is expected to inspire interest in exploring new types of superconductors and sheds light into the intriguing physics from a spin liquid/Mott insulator to a superconductor.

Crystalline Electric-Field Excitations in Quantum Spin Liquids Candidate $NaYbSe_{2}$

Very recently we revealed a large family of triangular lattice quantum spin liquid candidates named rare-earth chalcogenides, which features a high-symmetry structure without structural/charge disorders and spin impurities, and may serve as an ideal platform exploring spin liquid physics. The knowledge of crystalline electric-field (CEF) excitations is an essential step to explore the fundamental magnetism of rare-earth spin systems. Here we employed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and Raman scattering (RS) to carry out a comprehensive CFE investigation on $NaYbSe_{2}$, a promising representative of the family. By comparison with its nonmagnetic compound $NaLuSe_{2}$, we are able to identify the CEF excitations at 15.8, 24.3 and 30.5 meV at 5K. The selected cuts of the INS spectra are well re-produced with a large anisotropy of $g$ factors ($g_{ab}:g_{c}\sim3:1$). Further, the CEF excitations are explained well by our calculations based on the point charge model. Interestingly, $NaYbSe_{2}$ exhibits an unusual CEF shift to higher energies with increasing temperatures, and the Raman mode close to the first CEF excitation shows an anomalously large softening with decreasing temperatures. The absence of the anomalies in $NaLuSe_{2}$ clearly demonstrates a CEF-phonon coupling not reported in the family. It can be understood in term of the weaker electronegativity of Se. The fact that the smallest first CEF excitation in the sub-family of $NaYbCh_{2}$ is $\sim$ 180K (Ch=O, S, Se), guarantees that the sub-family can be strictly described with an effective S=1/2 picture at sufficiently low temperatures. Interestingly the CEF-phonon coupling revealed here may present alternative possibilities to manipulate the spin systems.

Dynamical switching of lasing emission by exceptional point modulation in coupled microcavities

In a non-Hermitian optical system with loss and gain, an exceptional point (EP) will arise under specific parameters where the eigenvalues and eigenstates exhibit simultaneous coalescence. Here we report a dynamical switching of lasing behavior in a non-Hermitian system composed of coupled microcavities by modulating the EPs. Utilizing the effect of gain, loss and coupling on the eigenstates of coupled microcavities, the evolution path of the eigenvalues related to the laser emission characteristics can be modulated. As a result, the lasing emission property of the coupled cavities exhibits an dynamical switching behavior, which can also be effectively controlled by tuning the gain and loss of the cavities. Moreover, the evolution behavior in a more complicated system composed of three coupled microcavities is investigated, which shows a better tunability compared with the two-microcavity system. Our results have correlated the EPs in non-Hermitian system with lasing emission in complex microcavity systems, which shows great potential for realizing dynamical, ultrafast and multifunctional optoelectronic devices for on-chip integrations.

Epoxy-inspired Nonlinear Interface Integrating Monolayer Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides with Linear Plasmonic Nanosieves

Although TMDC monolayers offer giant optical nonlinearity within few-angstrom thickness, it is still elusive to modulate and engineer the wavefront of nonlinear emissions. The grain size of high-quality monolayers also restricts possibilities of imparting inhomogeneous or gradient profiles of phases and amplitudes by classical light sources. Plasmonic nanosieves can support huge field enhancement and precise nonlinear phase control with hundred-nanometer pixel-level resolution, however they suffer from intrinsically weak nonlinear susceptibility. In nature, epoxy represents a strong glue whose magic adhesion comes from the bonding of two intrinsic loose and nonsticky resins. Inspired by the nature of epoxy, we report a multifunctional and powerful nonlinear interfaces via integrating transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers with linear plasmonic nanosieves, which cannot be accessed by either constituents. We experimentally demonstrate orbital angular momentum (OAM) generation, beam steering, versatile polarization control and holograms and of SH emission, with the proposed nonlinear interfaces. In addition, an effective second-harmonic (SH) nonlinearity \c{hi}(2) of ~25 nm/V is obtained for such systems. This designer platform synergizes the complementary advantages of TMDC monolayer, plasmonic nanosieves, geometric phases, and field enhancement, paving a distinct avenue toward designer, multi-functional, and ultra-compact nonlinear optical devices.

Rare-earth chalcogenides: A large family of triangular lattice spin liquid candidate

Frustrated quantum magnets are expected to host many exotic quantum spin states like quantum spin liquid (QSL), and have attracted numerous interest in modern condensed matter physics. The discovery of the triangular lattice spin liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_4$ stimulated an increasing attention on the rare-earth-based frustrated magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a large family of rare-earth chalcogenides AReCh$_2$ (A = alkali or monovalent ions, Re = rare earth, Ch = O, S, Se). The family compounds share the same structure (R$\bar{3}$m) as YbMgGaO$_4$, and antiferromagnetically coupled rare-earth ions form perfect triangular layers that are well separated along the $c$-axis. Specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements on NaYbO$_2$, NaYbS$_2$ and NaYbSe$_2$ single crystals and polycrystals, reveal no structural or magnetic transition down to 50mK. The family, having the simplest structure and chemical formula among the known QSL candidates, removes the issue on possible exchange disorders in YbMgGaO$_4$. More excitingly, the rich diversity of the family members allows tunable charge gaps, variable exchange coupling, and many other advantages. This makes the family an ideal platform for fundamental research of QSLs and its promising applications.

Exploring a Unified Attention-Based Pooling Framework for Speaker Verification

The pooling layer is an essential component in the neural network based speaker verification. Most of the current networks in speaker verification use average pooling to derive the utterance-level speaker representations. Average pooling takes every frame as equally important, which is suboptimal since the speaker-discriminant power is different between speech segments. In this paper, we present a unified attention-based pooling framework and combine it with the multi-head attention. Experiments on the Fisher and NIST SRE 2010 dataset show that involving outputs from lower layers to compute the attention weights can outperform average pooling and achieve better results than vanilla attention method. The multi-head attention further improves the performance.

Tungsten disulfide-gold nanohole hybrid metasurfaces for nonlinear metalens in the visible region

Recently, nonlinear hybrid metasurface comes into an attractive new concept in the research of nanophotonics and nanotechnology. It is composed of semiconductors with an intrinsically large nonlinear susceptibility and traditional plasmonic metasurfaces, offering opportunities for efficiently generating and manipulating nonlinear optical responses. A high second-harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency has been demonstrated in the mid-infrared region by using multi-quantum-well (MQW) based plasmonic metasurfaces. However, it has yet to be demonstrated in the visible region. Here we present a new type of nonlinear hybrid metasurfaces for the visible region, which consists of a single layer of tungsten disulfide (WS2) and a phased gold nanohole array. The results indicate that a large SHG susceptibility of ~0.1 nm/V at 810 nm is achieved, which is 2~3 orders of magnitude larger than that of typical plasmonic metasurfaces. Nonlinear metalenses with the focal lengths of 30 μm, 50 μm and 100 μm are demonstrated experimentally, providing a direct evidence for both generating and manipulating SH signals based on the nonlinear hybrid metasurfaces. It shows great potential applications in designing of integrated, ultra-thin, compacted and efficient nonlinear optical devices, such as frequency converters, nonlinear holography and generation of nonlinear optical vortex beam.

Controllable light capsules employing modified Bessel-Gauss beams

We report, in theory and experiment, on a novel class of controlled light capsules with nearly perfect darkness, directly employing intrinsic properties of modified Bessel-Gauss beams. These beams are able to naturally create three-dimensional bottle-shaped region during propagation as long as the parameters are properly chosen. Remarkably, the optical bottle can be controlled to demonstrate various geometries through tuning the beam parameters, thereby leading to an adjustable light capsule. We provide a detailed insight into the theoretical origin and characteristics of the light capsule derived from modified Bessel-Gauss beams. Moreover, a binary digital micromirror device (DMD) based scheme is first employed to shape the bottle beams by precise amplitude and phase manipulation. Further, we demonstrate their ability for optical trapping of core-shell magnetic microparticles, which play a particular role in biomedical research, with holographic optical tweezers. Therefore, our observations provide a new route for generating and controlling bottle beams and will widen the potentials for micromanipulation of absorbing particles, aerosols or even individual atoms.
