Optical responses of the switching currents in Al and Nb Josephson junctions

We experimentally demonstrated the optical responses of the switching currents in two types of Josephson tunnel junctions: Al/AlOx/Al and Nb/AlOx/Nb. The radiation-induced switching current shifts were measured at ultra-low bath temperature (T~16 mK). It is observed that the Al-junction has a more sensitive optical response than the Nb-junction, which is as expected since Al electrode has a smaller superconducting gap energy. The minimum detectable radiation powers with the present Al-junction and Nb-junction are 8 pW (corresponding to 8*10^5 incoming photons in one measurement cycle) and 2 nW respectively. In addition, we found that the radiation-induced thermal effects are dominant in the observed optical responses. Several methods are proposed to further improve the optical responsivity, so that the josephson junction based devices could be applicable in photon detections.

Landau-Zener-Stückelberg Interference of Microwave Dressed States of a Superconducting Phase Qubit

We present the first observation of Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) interference of the dressed states arising from an artificial atom, a superconducting phase qubit, interacting with a microwave field. The dependence of LZS interference fringes on various external parameters and the initial state of the qubit agrees quantitatively very well with the theoretical prediction. Such LZS interferometry between the dressed states enables us to control the quantum states of a tetrapartite solid-state system with ease, demonstrating the feasibility of implementing efficient multipartite quantum logic gates with this unique approach.

Low Loss and Magnetic Field-tuned Superconducting THz Metamaterial

Superconducting terahertz (THz) metamaterial (MM) made from superconducting Nb film has been investigated using a continuous-wave THz spectroscopy with a superconducting split-coil magnet. The obtained quality factors of the resonant modes at 132 GHz and 450 GHz are about three times as large as those calculated for a metal THz MM operating at 1 K, which indicates that superconducting THz MM is a very nice candidate to achieve low loss performance. In addition, the magnetic field-tuning on superconducting THz MM is also demonstrated, which offer an alternative tuning method apart from the existed electric, optical and thermal tuning on THz MM.

Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg interferometry in multilevel superconducting flux qubit

Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg interferometry has been extensively investigated in quantum two-level systems, with particular interests on artificial system such as superconducting flux qubits. With increasing the driving field amplitude, more energy levels will be involved into the quantum evolution, which results in population inversion and many interesting interference patterns. These interference patterns can be used to obtain the parameters characterizing the system and probe dephasing mechanisms of the qubit. Most recently, experiments have been extended to the regime with higher-frequency and larger-amplitude driving field, in which the interference pattern exhibited more complicated characteristics. In this article, we give a universal description of the characteristics observed in both low-frequency and high-frequency regimes. Besides explaining the already observed experimental results, our theoretical model predicted many interesting phenomenon, which can be demonstrated by future experiments.

Population Inversion Induced by Landau-Zener Transition in a Strongly Driven rf-SQUID

Microwave resonances between discrete macroscopically distinct quantum states with single photon and multiphoton absorption are observed in a strongly driven radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device flux qubit. The amplitude of the resonant peaks and dips are modulated by the power of the applied microwave irradiation and a population inversion is generated at low flux bias. These results, which can be addressed with Landau-Zener transition, are useful to develop an alternative means to initialize and manipulate the flux qubit, as well as to do a controllable population inversion used in a micromaser.

Quantum Jump Approach to Switching Process of a Josephson Junction Coupled to a Microscopic Two-Level System

With microwave irradiation, the switching current of a Josephson junction coupled to a microscopic two-level system jumps randomly between two discrete states. We modeled the switching process of the coupled system with quantum jump approach that was generally used in quantum optics. The parameters that affect the character of the quantum jumps between macroscopic quantum states are discussed. The results obtained from our theoretical analysis agree well with those of the experiments and provide a clear physical picture for the macroscopic quantum jumps in Josephson junctions coupled with two-level systems. In addition, quantum jumps may serve as a useful tool to investigate the microscopic two-level structures in solid-state systems.

Applying Bayesian Neural Network to Determine Neutrino Incoming Direction in Reactor Neutrino Experiments and Supernova Explosion Location by Scintillator Detectors

In the paper, it is discussed by using Monte-Carlo simulation that the Bayesian Neural Network(BNN) is applied to determine neutrino incoming direction in reactor neutrino experiments and supernova explosion location by scintillator detectors. As a result, compared to the method in Ref.\cite{key-1}, the uncertainty on the measurement of the neutrino direction using BNN is significantly improved. The uncertainty on the measurement of the reactor neutrino direction is about 1.0$^\circ$ at the 68.3% C.L., and the one in the case of supernova neutrino is about 0.6$^\circ$ at the 68.3% C.L.. Compared to the method in Ref.\cite{key-1}, the uncertainty attainable by using BNN reduces by a factor of about 20. And compared to the Super-Kamiokande experiment(SK), it reduces by a factor of about 8.

Applying Bayesian Neural Networks to Separate Neutrino Events from Backgrounds in Reactor Neutrino Experiments

A toy detector has been designed to simulate central detectors in reactor neutrino experiments in the paper. The samples of neutrino events and three major backgrounds from the Monte-Carlo simulation of the toy detector are generated in the signal region. The Bayesian Neural Networks(BNN) are applied to separate neutrino events from backgrounds in reactor neutrino experiments. As a result, the most neutrino events and uncorrelated background events in the signal region can be identified with BNN, and the part events each of the fast neutron and $^{8}$He/$^{9}$Li backgrounds in the signal region can be identified with BNN. Then, the signal to noise ratio in the signal region is enhanced with BNN. The neutrino discrimination increases with the increase of the neutrino rate in the training sample. However, the background discriminations decrease with the decrease of the background rate in the training sample.

Applying Bayesian Neural Networks to Event Reconstruction in Reactor Neutrino Experiments

A toy detector has been designed to simulate central detectors in reactor neutrino experiments in the paper. The electron samples from the Monte-Carlo simulation of the toy detector have been reconstructed by the method of Bayesian neural networks (BNN) and the standard algorithm, a maximum likelihood method (MLD), respectively. The result of the event reconstruction using BNN has been compared with the one using MLD. Compared to MLD, the uncertainties of the electron vertex are not improved, but the energy resolutions are significantly improved using BNN. And the improvement is more obvious for the high energy electrons than the low energy ones.

Thermal Escape from a Metastable State in Periodically Driven Josephson Junctions

Resonant activation and noise-enhanced stability were observed in an underdamped real physical system, i.e., Josephson tunnel junctions. With a weak sinusoidal driving force applied, the thermal activated escape from a potential well underwent resonance-like behavior as a function of the driving frequency. The resonance also crucially depended on the initial condition of the system. Numerical simulations showed good agreement with the experimental results.
