Tunable high-charge relativistic electron beams via direct laser acceleration in hohlraum-preheated foam targets

Direct laser acceleration (DLA) in near-critical-density (NCD) plasmas can efficiently generate high-charge relativistic electron beams, yet beam parameters depend critically on precise plasma state manipulation. Solid-ablation NCD plasmas evolve rapidly, posing severe controllability challenges. We produce NCD plasma via indirectly heating foam targets with ns laser driven hohlraum soft X-ray. Electrons are generated through irradiating the plasma with another picosecond laser. Tuning the laser pulse delay $\tau$ enables control of plasma profiles and beam parameters. Experiments show that when the foam is heated ($\tau$ = 6 ns, 9 ns), the beam exhibits $T \sim 13$ MeV effective temperature, $E_k \sim 80$ MeV cutoff energy, and hundreds of nC/sr charge for $E_k > 7.5$ MeV. These values are significantly higher than those from solid-foil ($T$ $\sim$ 2.7 MeV, $E_k$ $\sim$ 20 MeV, $Q$ $\sim$ 9 nC/sr) and cold-foam ($T$ $\sim$ 12 MeV, $E_k$ $\sim$ 50 MeV, $Q$ $\sim$ 5 nC/sr) interactions. At a longer delay of $\tau$ = 15 ns, the charge increases further while the temperature decreases, and at a shorter delay of $\tau$ = 3 ns, both temperature and charge are lower. 3D PIC simulations link these observations to the interplay between the microstructure of the cold foam and the evolving plasma density profile at different delay times, which together determine the beam charge, effective temperature, and divergence. The finding provides a routine to generate and tailor the relativistic electron beams, which is essential for designing laser-driven electron sources for high energy density physics and photonuclear reaction applications.

Observation of stopping power reduction at strong ion-plasma coupling

Ion stopping in dense plasma is crucial for stellar evolution and fusion ignition. However, its behavior in the strong ion-plasma coupling regime beyond the linear limit has long remained elusive, due to formidable experimental challenges. Here we report the first experimental investigation of ion stopping at an unprecedented coupling parameter exceeding unity, achieved by sending laser-accelerated short-pulse and intense quasi-monoenergetic carbon ions ($\sim$583 keV/u, C$^{5+}$) into a uniform, long-lived, well-characterized dense plasma target ($T_e$ $\approx$ 17 eV, $n_e$ $\approx$ 4$\times$10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$). By simultaneously measuring ion energy loss and charge-state evolution, we eliminated key experimental ambiguities arising from charge-state determination. Our results clearly show a reduction in stopping power compared with predictions from standard linear dielectric response or binary collision models, and they agree well with the hybrid calculation of molecular dynamics with quantum corrections. The importance of nonlinear screening effects arising from many-body interactions and quantum effects due to the wave nature of electrons was demonstrated at strong coupling. This work establishes a definitive high-fidelity experimental benchmark for collisional dynamics in the strong-coupling regime. It offers critical insight for accurate modeling of energy transport in inertial confinement fusion and astrophysical plasmas.

Complex Boolean Turing Machines: An Algebraic Semantic Framework for Computational Complexity

Traditional Turing machines are semantically poor, they only concern the syntactic manipulation of symbols, discarding the mathematical semantics behind the symbols. This semantic deficiency is considered the root cause of the three major barriers: relativization, natural proofs, and algebrization. This paper proposes the Complex Boolean Turing Machine (CBTM), elevating computational symbols to algebraic elements in $\mathrm{GF}(4)$, so that each operation has a clear mathematical interpretation. The core insight of the CBTM is: \textbf{Non-deterministic computation corresponds to algebraic field extension}, when reading a symbol representing a new dimension, the computation must branch into two paths, just as introducing a new element $\alpha$ into the field $\mathbb{Q}$ yields the extension $\mathbb{Q}(\alpha)$. We separate old data from new dimensions via the projection operators $\mathfrak{Re}$ and $\mathfrak{Im}$, and introduce a dual-tape perspective to intuitively decompose abstract algebraic symbols into a real tape (deterministic computation) and an imaginary tape (non-deterministic control). Moreover, the algebraic semantics of the CBTM naturally support arbitrary $k$-way non-determinism: by introducing multiple new dimensions, we can generate high-dimensional algebraic extensions $\mathbb{Q}(\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_d)$, whose dimension $2^d$ corresponds exactly to the number of branches. We prove that the CBTM is polynomially equivalent to classical Turing machines and non-deterministic Turing machines, with $\mathbf{P}_{cb}=\mathbf{P}$ and $\mathbf{NP}_{cb}=\mathbf{NP}$. Thus, the CBTM does not introduce hyper-computation but provides a new algebraic perspective for understanding the essence of non-determinism. This work serves as the computational model foundation for the series of papers.

Dual-Tape Perspective and Generator Independence: The Algebraic Foundation of Real Boolean Turing Machines

The Complex Boolean Turing Machine (CBTM) characterizes non-deterministic computation using the abstract generator $\alpha$, but the abstractness of $\alpha$ makes it difficult to understand intuitively. In this paper, by concretizing $\alpha$ as the algebraic number $\sqrt{2}$, we introduce the \textbf{Real Boolean Turing Machine (RBTM)} and propose the \textbf{dual-tape perspective}, decomposing each tape into a real tape (storing rational coefficients $a$) and an imaginary tape (storing irrational coefficients $b$). The ``1''s on the imaginary tape intuitively mark the locations of ``new dimensions,'' laying a physical foundation for subsequent dynamic dimension tracking. More importantly, we prove the \textbf{Generator Independence Theorem}: computational power is independent of the specific choice of generator, whether using $\sqrt{2}$, $\sqrt{3}$, or the imaginary unit $i$, the corresponding automata are isomorphic. This reveals that the essence of non-determinism lies in the fact of ``introducing a new element incommensurable with the base field,'' rather than the algebraic identity of the generator. Furthermore, we introduce the \textbf{generator extraction operator} and analyze its limitations within a static framework, highlighting the necessity of introducing a dynamic IVM. The RBTM serves both as a visualized instance of the CBTM and as a bridge to the subsequent dynamic dimension tracking of the Imaginary-part Verification Machine(IVM).

Express Diagnostic of Intense Laser-driven MeV Radiation Source using Copper Isotopes

We explored the generation and diagnosis of high-brightness MeV bremsstrahlung radiation caused by intense beam of relativistic electrons propagating in a tantalum converter. The intense electron beam was produced through direct laser acceleration mechanism in the interaction of relativistic high-power sub-ps laser pulse with near critical density plasma. We propose to detect the divergence angle and photon fluence of high-brightness and high-energy gamma radiation source based on the nuclear activation method. The radioactive 62^Cu was generated through photonuclear reactions 63^Cu(gamma,n) 62^Cu and the subsequent beta^+ decay of 62^Cu was measured to derive characteristics of the gamma radiation source. This method provides an express approach to diagnose the laser-driven MeV radiation source and a potential efficient way to produce 62^Cu isotopes.

The Radical Solution and Computational Complexity

The radical solution of polynomials with rational coefficients is a famous solved problem. This paper found that it is a $\mathbb{NP}$ problem. Furthermore, this paper found that arbitrary $ \mathscr{P} \in \mathbb{P}$ shall have a one-way running graph $G$, and have a corresponding $\mathscr{Q} \in \mathbb{NP}$ which have a two-way running graph $G'$, $G$ and $G'$ is isomorphic, i.e., $G'$ is combined by $G$ and its reverse $G^{-1}$. When $\mathscr{P}$ is an algorithm for solving polynomials, $G^{-1}$ is the radical formula. According to Galois' Theory, a general radical formula does not exist. Therefore, there exists an $\mathbb{NP}$, which does not have a general, deterministic and polynomial time-complexity algorithm, i.e., $\mathbb{P} \neq \mathbb{NP}$. Moreover, this paper pointed out that this theorem actually is an impossible trinity.

Charge equilibration of Laser-accelerated Carbon Ions in Foam Target

The charge equilibration of laser-accelerated carbon ion beams in 2 mg/cm3 foam target was investigated experimentally. The ions were generated through target normal sheath acceleration mechanism in laser-foil interaction scheme. This allows to get the equilibrium charge state in wide energy range near Bragg peak within a single shot. By using foam, the charge equilibration measurement in density regime between gas and solid state was firstly reached out experimentally. It was found that the theoretical predictions with tabulated cross section data for gas target greatly underestimated the charge states. The experimental data are in close agreement with both semi-empirical formula as well as rate equation predictions based on ion-solid interactions. The important role of target density effects that increase the ionization probability and decrease the electron capture probability through frequent multi-collisions in foam are demonstrated. The double electron processes are shown to have little influence on the average charge states. The findings are essential for high energy density physics research where the foams are widely used, and have impacts on a broad range of applications in medical, biological and material fields. The method also provides a new approach to investigate the interaction mechanism of swift heavy ions in matter by taking advantage of the laser-accelerated short-pulse wide-energy range ions.

The Linear Correlation of $P$ and $NP$

$P \overset{\text{?}}{=} NP$ or $P\ vs\ NP$ is the core problem in computational complexity theory. In this paper, we proposed a definition of linear correlation of derived matrix and system, and discussed the linear correlation of $P$ and $NP$. We draw a conclusion that $P$ is linearly dependent and there exists $NP$ which is is linearly independent and take a 3SAT instance which belongs to $NP$ as the example , that is, $P \neq NP$.

Target density effects on charge tansfer of laser-accelerated carbon ions in dense plasma

We report on charge state measurements of laser-accelerated carbon ions in the energy range of several MeV penetrating a dense partially ionized plasma. The plasma was generated by irradiation of a foam target with laser-induced hohlraum radiation in the soft X-ray regime. We used the tri-cellulose acetate (C$_{9}$H$_{16}$O$_{8}$) foam of 2 mg/cm$^{-3}$ density, and $1$-mm interaction length as target material. This kind of plasma is advantageous for high-precision measurements, due to good uniformity and long lifetime compared to the ion pulse length and the interaction duration. The plasma parameters were diagnosed to be T$_{e}$=17 eV and n$_{e}$=4 $\times$ 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. The average charge states passing through the plasma were observed to be higher than those predicted by the commonly-used semiempirical formula. Through solving the rate equations, we attribute the enhancement to the target density effects which will increase the ionization rates on one hand and reduce the electron capture rates on the other hand. In previsous measurement with partially ionized plasma from gas discharge and z-pinch to laser direct irradiation, no target density effects were ever demonstrated. For the first time, we were able to experimentally prove that target density effects start to play a significant role in plasma near the critical density of Nd-Glass laser radiation. The finding is important for heavy ion beam driven high energy density physics and fast ignitions.
