A divergence-free parametric finite element method for 3D Stokes equations on curved domains

The Stokes equations play an important role in the incompressible flow simulation. In this paper, a novel divergence-free parametric mixed finite element method is proposed for solving three-dimensional Stokes equations on domains with piecewise smooth boundaries. The flow velocity and pressure are discretized with high-order parametric Brezzi-Douglas-Marini elements and volume elements, respectively, on curved tetrahedral meshes. Utilizing the interior-penalty discontinuous Galerkin (IPDG) technique, we prove the inf-sup condition for the mixed finite element pair, and high-order optimal error estimates in the energy norm, with the help of the extension and transformation of the true solution to computational domain. Moreover, the discrete velocity is exactly divergence-free, meaning that $\Div\Bu_h=0$ holds in the curved computational domain. Numerical experiments are conducted to support the theoretical analyses.

Wavenumber-explicit stability and preasymptotic error analysis of UPML finite element method for obstacle scattering problems

This paper develops a wavenumber-explicit stability and preasymptotic error analysis for finite element approximation of the two-dimensional Helmholtz scattering problem with a uniaxial perfectly matched layer (UPML) truncation. The analysis is based on direct estimates of the stretched Green kernel associated with the Cartesian complex coordinate transformation. We establish explicit stability for the truncated UPML problem. In particular, we prove that the inf-sup constant of the truncated UPML formulation is $μ_L = O(k^{-1})$ in a natural $k$-weighted $H^1$ norm. As a consequence, we also obtain an exponential decay estimate for the PML truncation error. Based on this stability estimate, we formulate a linear continuous interior penalty finite element method (CIP-FEM) on the truncated UPML domain. A key ingredient of the analysis is to establish a piecewise $H^{1+s}$-regularity result (for any $0<s<1$), which accounts for coefficient jumps across PML interfaces and singularities induced by Cartesian corner geometries. This fractional regularity is sufficient to derive wavenumber-explicit preasymptotic error estimates. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical predictions and illustrate the effectiveness of the UPML CIP-FEM in the high-frequency regime.

Boundary-preserving hp interpolation and p-robust discrete harmonic extensions on tetrahedral meshes

We construct a boundary-preserving hp interpolation operator on three-dimensional tetrahedral meshes with locally variable polynomial degrees. If the trace of an H^1 function on the prescribed Dirichlet boundary is already a piecewise polynomial trace of the finite element space, the interpolant preserves this trace exactly and satisfies the standard local h_K/p_K approximation estimates. The statement follows the scaling form of Melenk's hp quasi-interpolation for nonsmooth functions. As a consequence, a discrete trace is extended by first applying the continuous trace theorem and then applying the boundary-preserving interpolant; the corresponding discrete harmonic extension is bounded by variational comparison. The proof of the interpolation theorem uses local polynomial trace liftings on tetrahedral boundary layers, nonsingular vertex patches, and a variable-degree tetrahedral projection. These auxiliary liftings are also stable in scaled boundary-layer norms.

Trace-Preserving hp Interpolation and Polynomial Liftings on Conforming Hexahedral Meshes

Trace-compatible polynomial extensions are a recurring local ingredient in high-order finite element analysis on conforming hexahedral meshes. They are needed whenever prescribed edge and face traces must be preserved while a polynomial is extended into a neighboring cell or boundary patch. The main contribution of this paper is the construction of p-robust polynomial liftings on nonsingular conforming hexahedral boundary patches, with stable control of both the H^1 norm and the H^1-seminorm estimates needed for energy arguments. These liftings imply H^1-seminorm stable discrete harmonic extensions of polynomial Dirichlet traces. They also serve as boundary corrections for the conforming hp Clement interpolant, yielding trace-preserving interpolation operators for functions with only H^1 regularity. Under the uniform boundary-degree condition the constants are p-uniform; in the non-uniform case the stated logarithmic loss appears. We also treat meshes that may contain conforming singular boundary patches, where the loss remains polylogarithmic in the maximal local degree. Trace-preserving interpolation on reference cells and vertex-supported decompositions are developed as local tools for these patch and mesh-level constructions.

Owner-selected bubble transforms and coefficient-robust Schwarz preconditioners for variable-degree $hp$ finite elements

We construct $h$- and $p$-robust, degree-preserving space decompositions and additive Schwarz preconditioners for variable-degree $hp$ finite element discretizations of conforming reaction-diffusion and fitted-interface problems. On conforming simplicial meshes, an owner-selected Falk--Winther bubble transform gives $L^2$- and $H^1$-stable components with constants independent of the mesh size, the local polynomial degrees, and the degree distribution. Minimal-degree owners preserve arbitrary variable-degree spaces with $p_K\ge1$, while coefficient-adapted owners yield weighted estimates under local chain conditions. Combined with a weighted continuous piecewise affine extraction, this gives $hp$-uniform Schwarz preconditioners for conforming reaction-diffusion problems with locally comparable coefficients, and a coefficient-weighted conforming variant in the uniform-degree case. For three-dimensional fitted-interface problems, we use a symmetric Nitsche discretization on a tetrahedral mesh fitted to a piecewise planar interface. Surface jump components are lifted into the side selected by the penalty scaling using patch-level $p$-robust trace liftings. The conforming remainder is decomposed by the low-order extraction and a weighted one-sided bubble transform. Grouping the resulting components by vertices yields a practical vertex-patch Schwarz preconditioner whose condition number is independent of the mesh size, local polynomial degrees, diffusion contrast, and coefficient magnitudes under a common-degree condition on interface-touching tetrahedra. Numerical experiments for pure diffusion problems support the theory and suggest robustness beyond the common-degree assumption.

Weighted hp-Uniform Decompositions for H^k-Type Tensor-Product Spaces in Arbitrary Dimension

We establish weighted hp-uniform vertex-patch decompositions in arbitrary space dimension d >= 1 for tensor-product discretizations of H^k-type conforming and nonconforming spaces, with arbitrary fixed Sobolev order k >= 1, on fitted interface meshes. The cells are coordinate-compatible cuboids, the local spaces are Q_{p_K}(K) with arbitrary elementwise degrees satisfying p_K >= 2k-1, and the coefficient may have arbitrarily large jumps across material interfaces. Under local coefficient oscillation bounds and a local high-side connectivity condition, both the conforming H^k space and the nonconforming spaces V_h^{(s)}, 0 <= s <= k, admit stable decompositions with constants which may depend on the fixed parameters d and k, but are independent of the mesh size, all polynomial degrees, neighboring degree ratios, and the global coefficient contrast. The argument combines a Hermite endpoint transform for endpoint jets of order 0,...,k-1, its tensor-product extension, weighted broken patch Poincare inequalities, and a successive correction of normal derivative jumps. Numerical experiments for a three-dimensional DG problem with large coefficient jumps and strongly varying local polynomial degrees support the predicted robustness. For k = 1 the same conclusions hold on uniformly regular mapped cubical meshes whose neighboring element maps agree on each common face.

Stable Triangle Projections for Variable-Degree Tetrahedral Spaces and Uniform IPDG Preconditioning

The main ingredient of this paper is an edge-local variable-degree projection on a triangle that is uniformly stable in both L2 and H1. We use this two-dimensional operator in two tetrahedral constructions. First, on a reference tetrahedron, we build an H1-stable projection from a high order polynomial space onto a variable-degree space whose degrees are prescribed independently on edges, faces, and in the volume. Since the tetrahedral projection is local and trace-compatible, it also gives an h- and p-uniform stable decomposition, in the weighted energy norm, for conforming hp spaces, and hence a uniform additive Schwarz preconditioner for the conforming Laplace operator. Second, on a uniformly regular mapped tetrahedral mesh with elementwise variable polynomial degrees, the same triangular projection gives the finite-layer edge truncation needed in a p-uniform stable DG-to-CG decomposition for the symmetric IPDG norm. The DG-to-CG decomposition, combined with the conforming splitting, gives the IPDG preconditioner. The constants depend only on reference shapes, the local degree-spread bound within each tetrahedron, the neighbor-degree bound across mesh faces, uniform map-regularity, patch cardinalities, and the coefficient path constants; they are independent of h, of the local polynomial degrees, and of the coefficient contrast.

hp-Optimal DG Approximation and Robust Schwarz Decompositions on One-Irregular Cubical Meshes

We study hp approximation and additive Schwarz decompositions for variable-order cubical finite element spaces on one-irregular meshes. For fitted homogeneous diffusion interface problems on one-irregular hexahedral meshes, we prove an hp-optimal energy-norm estimate for the interior penalty DG method. The interpolation input is a conforming hp interpolant obtained from fitted conforming closures of one-irregular vertex patches. We also derive stable decompositions for conforming and DG spaces. On one-irregular quadrilateral meshes the bounds allow locally comparable variable polynomial degrees and are independent of the mesh size, the local degrees, and, under a local coefficient quasi-monotonicity condition, the coefficient contrast. On one-irregular hexahedral meshes the conforming decomposition has the corresponding polylogarithmic loss; the DG-to-conforming reduction is used there for uniform-degree DG spaces. Numerical experiments illustrate the p-optimal DG error estimate and the robustness of the DG Schwarz preconditioner.

p-multigrid method for the discontinuous Galerkin discretization of elliptic problems

In this paper, we propose a $W$-cycle $p$-multigrid method for solving the $p$-version symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (SIPDG) discretization of elliptic problems. This SIPDG discretization employs hierarchical Legendre polynomial basis functions. Inspired by the uniform convergence theory of the $W$-cycle $hp$-multigrid method in [P. F. Antonietti, et al., SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 53 (2015)], we provide a rigorous convergence analysis for the proposed $p$-multigrid method, considering both inherited and non-inherited bilinear forms of SIPDG discretization. Our theoretical results show significant improvement over [P. F. Antonietti, et al., SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 53 (2015)], reducing the required number of smoothing steps from $O(p^2)$ to $O(p)$, where $p$ is the polynomial degree of the discrete broken polynomial space. Moreover, the convergence rate remains independent of the mesh size. Several numerical experiments are presented to verify our theoretical findings. Finally, we numerically verify the effectiveness of the $p$-multigrid method for unfitted finite element discretization in solving elliptic interface problems on general $C^{2} $-smooth interfaces.

Action Dubber: Timing Audible Actions via Inflectional Flow

We introduce the task of Audible Action Temporal Localization, which aims to identify the spatio-temporal coordinates of audible movements. Unlike conventional tasks such as action recognition and temporal action localization, which broadly analyze video content, our task focuses on the distinct kinematic dynamics of audible actions. It is based on the premise that key actions are driven by inflectional movements; for example, collisions that produce sound often involve abrupt changes in motion. To capture this, we propose $TA^{2}Net$, a novel architecture that estimates inflectional flow using the second derivative of motion to determine collision timings without relying on audio input. $TA^{2}Net$ also integrates a self-supervised spatial localization strategy during training, combining contrastive learning with spatial analysis. This dual design improves temporal localization accuracy and simultaneously identifies sound sources within video frames. To support this task, we introduce a new benchmark dataset, $Audible623$, derived from Kinetics and UCF101 by removing non-essential vocalization subsets. Extensive experiments confirm the effectiveness of our approach on $Audible623$ and show strong generalizability to other domains, such as repetitive counting and sound source localization. Code and dataset are available at https://github.com/WenlongWan/Audible623.

FedVLMBench: Benchmarking Federated Fine-Tuning of Vision-Language Models

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in cross-modal understanding and generation by integrating visual and textual information. While instruction tuning and parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods have substantially improved the generalization of VLMs, most existing approaches rely on centralized training, posing challenges for deployment in domains with strict privacy requirements like healthcare. Recent efforts have introduced Federated Learning (FL) into VLM fine-tuning to address these privacy concerns, yet comprehensive benchmarks for evaluating federated fine-tuning strategies, model architectures, and task generalization remain lacking. In this work, we present \textbf{FedVLMBench}, the first systematic benchmark for federated fine-tuning of VLMs. FedVLMBench integrates two mainstream VLM architectures (encoder-based and encoder-free), four fine-tuning strategies, five FL algorithms, six multimodal datasets spanning four cross-domain single-task scenarios and two cross-domain multitask settings, covering four distinct downstream task categories. Through extensive experiments, we uncover key insights into the interplay between VLM architectures, fine-tuning strategies, data heterogeneity, and multi-task federated optimization. Notably, we find that a 2-layer multilayer perceptron (MLP) connector with concurrent connector and LLM tuning emerges as the optimal configuration for encoder-based VLMs in FL. Furthermore, current FL methods exhibit significantly higher sensitivity to data heterogeneity in vision-centric tasks than text-centric ones, across both encoder-free and encoder-based VLM architectures. Our benchmark provides essential tools, datasets, and empirical guidance for the research community, offering a standardized platform to advance privacy-preserving, federated training of multimodal foundation models.

VrdONE: One-stage Video Visual Relation Detection

Video Visual Relation Detection (VidVRD) focuses on understanding how entities interact over time and space in videos, a key step for gaining deeper insights into video scenes beyond basic visual tasks. Traditional methods for VidVRD, challenged by its complexity, typically split the task into two parts: one for identifying what relation categories are present and another for determining their temporal boundaries. This split overlooks the inherent connection between these elements. Addressing the need to recognize entity pairs' spatiotemporal interactions across a range of durations, we propose VrdONE, a streamlined yet efficacious one-stage model. VrdONE combines the features of subjects and objects, turning predicate detection into 1D instance segmentation on their combined representations. This setup allows for both relation category identification and binary mask generation in one go, eliminating the need for extra steps like proposal generation or post-processing. VrdONE facilitates the interaction of features across various frames, adeptly capturing both short-lived and enduring relations. Additionally, we introduce the Subject-Object Synergy (SOS) module, enhancing how subjects and objects perceive each other before combining. VrdONE achieves state-of-the-art performances on the VidOR benchmark and ImageNet-VidVRD, showcasing its superior capability in discerning relations across different temporal scales. The code is available at https://github.com/lucaspk512/vrdone.

A new framework of high-order unfitted finite element methods using ALE maps for moving-domain problems

As a sequel to our previous work [C. Ma, Q. Zhang and W. Zheng, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 60 (2022)], [C. Ma and W. Zheng, J. Comput. Phys. 469 (2022)], this paper presents a generic framework of arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian unfitted finite element (ALE-UFE) methods for partial differential equations (PDEs) on time-varying domains. The ALE-UFE method has a great potential in developing high-order unfitted finite element methods. The usefulness of the method is demonstrated by a variety of moving-domain problems, including a linear problem with explicit velocity of the boundary (or interface), a PDE-domain coupled problem, and a problem whose domain has a topological change. Numerical experiments show that optimal convergence is achieved by both third- and fourth-order methods on domains with smooth boundaries, but is deteriorated to the second order when the domain has topological changes.

Helmholtz decomposition based windowed Green function methods for elastic scattering problems on a half-space

This paper proposes a new Helmholtz decomposition based windowed Green function (HD-WGF) method for solving the time-harmonic elastic scattering problems on a half-space with Dirichlet boundary conditions in both 2D and 3D. The Helmholtz decomposition is applied to separate the pressure and shear waves, which satisfy the Helmholtz and Helmholtz/Maxwell equations, respectively, and the corresponding boundary integral equations of type $(\mathbb{I}+\mathbb{T})\bsϕ=\bs f$, that couple these two waves on the unbounded surface, are derived based on the free-space fundamental solution of Helmholtz equation. This approach avoids the treatment of the complex elastic displacement tensor and traction operator that involved in the classical integral equation method for elastic problems. Then a smooth ``slow-rise'' windowing function is introduced to truncate the boundary integral equations and a ``correction'' strategy is proposed to ensure the uniformly fast convergence for all incident angles of plane incidence. Numerical experiments for both two and three dimensional problems are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

Finite element error estimates for the nonlinear Schrödinger-Poisson model

In this paper, we study a priori error estimates for the finite element approximation of the nonlinear Schrödinger-Poisson model. The electron density is defined by an infinite series over all eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian operator. To establish the error estimate, we present a unified theory of error estimates for a class of nonlinear problems. The theory is based on three conditions: 1) the original problem has a solution $u$ which is the fixed point of a compact operator $\Ca$, 2) $\Ca$ is Fréchet-differentiable at $u$ and $\Ci-\Ca'[u]$ has a bounded inverse in a neighborhood of $u$, and 3) there exists an operator $\Ca_h$ which converges to $\Ca$ in the neighborhood of $u$. The theory states that $\Ca_h$ has a fixed point $u_h$ which solves the approximate problem. It also gives the error estimate between $u$ and $u_h$, without assumptions on the well-posedness of the approximate problem. We apply the unified theory to the finite element approximation of the Schrödinger-Poisson model and obtain optimal error estimate between the numerical solution and the exact solution. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the convergence rates of numerical solutions.

A PML method for signal-propagation problems in axon

This work is focused on the modelling of signal propagations in myelinated axons to characterize the functions of the myelin sheath in the neural structure. Based on reasonable assumptions on the medium properties, we derive a two-dimensional neural-signaling model in cylindrical coordinates from the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations. The well-posedness of model is established upon Dirichlet boundary conditions at the two ends of the neural structure and the radiative condition in the radial direction of the structure. Using the perfectly matched layer (PML) method, we truncate the unbounded background medium and propose an approximate problem on the truncated domain. The well-posedness of the PML problem and the exponential convergence of the approximate solution to the exact solution are established. Numerical experiments based on finite element discretization are presented to demonstrate the theoretical results and the efficiency of our methods to simulate the signal propagation in axons.

A uniform preconditioner for a Newton algorithm for total-variation minimization and minimum-surface problems

Solution methods for the nonlinear partial differential equation of the Rudin-Osher-Fatemi (ROF) and minimum-surface models are fundamental for many modern applications. Many efficient algorithms have been proposed. First order methods are common. They are popular due to their simplicity and easy implementation. Some second order Newton-type iterative methods have been proposed like Chan-Golub-Mulet method. In this paper, we propose a new Newton-Krylov solver for primal-dual finite element discretization of the ROF model. The method is so simple that we just need to use some diagonal preconditioners during the iterations. Theoretically, the proposed preconditioners are further proved to be robust and optimal with respect to the mesh size, the penalization parameter, the regularization parameter, and the iterative step, essentially it is a parameter independent preconditioner. We first discretize the primal-dual system by using mixed finite element methods, and then linearize the discrete system by Newton\textquoteright s method. Exploiting the well-posedness of the linearized problem on appropriate Sobolev spaces equipped with proper norms, we propose block diagonal preconditioners for the corresponding system solved with the minimum residual method. Numerical results are presented to support the theoretical results.

A fourth-order unfitted characteristic finite element method for solving the advection-diffusion equation on time-varying domains

We propose a fourth-order unfitted characteristic finite element method to solve the advection-diffusion equation on time-varying domains. Based on a characteristic-Galerkin formulation, our method combines the cubic MARS method for interface tracking, the fourth-order backward differentiation formula for temporal integration, and an unfitted finite element method for spatial discretization. Our convergence analysis includes errors of discretely representing the moving boundary, tracing boundary markers, and the spatial discretization and the temporal integration of the governing equation. Numerical experiments are performed on a rotating domain and a severely deformed domain to verify our theoretical results and to demonstrate the optimal convergence of the proposed method.
