ET White Paper: To Find the First Earth 2.0

We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space. In addition, the survey data will also facilitate studies in the fields of asteroseismology, Galactic archeology, time-domain sciences, and black holes in binaries.

Is Fermi 1544-0649 a misaligned blazar? discovering the jet structure with VLBI

Fermi J1544-0649 is a transient GeV source first detected during its GeV flares in 2017. Multi-wavelength observations during the flaring time demonstrate variability and spectral energy distribution(SED) that are typical of a blazar. Other than the flare time, Fermi J1544-0649 is quiet in the GeV band and looks rather like a quiet galaxy (2MASX J15441967-0649156) for a decade. Together with the broad absorption lines feature we further explore the "misaligned blazar scenario". We analyzed the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) data from 2018 to 2020 and discovered the four jet components from Fermi J1544-0649. We found a viewing angle around 3.7° to 7.4°. The lower limit of the viewing angle indicates a blazar with an extremely low duty cycle of the gamma-ray emission, the upper limit of it supports the "misaligned blazar scenario". Follow-up multi-wavelength observations after 2018 show Fermi J1544-0649 remains quiet in GeV, X-ray, and optical bands. Multi-messenger search of neutrinos is also performed, and an excess of 3.1 σ significance is found for this source.

Beamforming Optimization for Active Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided SWIPT

In this paper, we study an active IRS-aided simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system. Specifically, an active IRS is deployed to assist a multi-antenna access point (AP) to convey information and energy simultaneously to multiple single-antenna information users (IUs) and energy users (EUs). Two joint transmit and reflect beamforming optimization problems are investigated with different practical objectives. The first problem maximizes the weighted sum-power harvested by the EUs subject to individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at the IUs, while the second problem maximizes the weighted sum-rate of the IUs subject to individual energy harvesting (EH) constraints at the EUs. The optimization problems are non-convex and difficult to solve optimally. To tackle these two problems, we first rigorously prove that dedicated energy beams are not required for their corresponding semidefinite relaxation (SDR) reformulations and the SDR is tight for the first problem, thus greatly simplifying the AP precoding design. Then, by capitalizing on the techniques of alternating optimization (AO), SDR, and successive convex approximation (SCA), computationally efficient algorithms are developed to obtain suboptimal solutions of the resulting optimization problems. Simulation results demonstrate that, given the same total system power budget, significant performance gains in terms of operating range of wireless power transfer (WPT), total harvested energy, as well as achievable rate can be obtained by our proposed designs over benchmark schemes (especially the one adopting a passive IRS). Moreover, it is advisable to deploy an active IRS in the proximity of the users for the effective operation of WPT/SWIPT.

Energy-Efficient Backscatter Aided Uplink NOMA Roadside Sensor Communications under Channel Estimation Errors

This work presents non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) enabled energy-efficient alternating optimization framework for backscatter aided wireless powered uplink sensors communications for beyond 5G intelligent transportation system (ITS). Specifically, the transmit power of carrier emitter (CE) and reflection coefficients of backscatter aided roadside sensors are optimized with channel uncertainties for the maximization of the energy efficiency (EE) of the network. The formulated problem is tackled by the proposed two-stage alternating optimization algorithm named AOBWS (alternating optimization for backscatter aided wireless powered sensors). In the first stage, AOBWS employs an iterative algorithm to obtain optimal CE transmit power through simplified closed-form computed through Cardano's formulae. In the second stage, AOBWS uses a non-iterative algorithm that provides a closed-form expression for the computation of optimal reflection coefficient for roadside sensors under their quality of service (QoS) and a circuit power constraint. The global optimal exhaustive search (ES) algorithm is used as a benchmark. Simulation results demonstrate that the AOBWS algorithm can achieve near-optimal performance with very low complexity, which makes it suitable for practical implementations.

Energy-Efficient IRS-Aided NOMA Beamforming for 6G Wireless Communications

This manuscript presents an energy-efficient alternating optimization framework based on intelligent reflective surfaces (IRS) aided non-orthogonal multiple access beamforming (NOMA-BF) system for 6G wireless communications. Specifically, this work proposes a centralized IRS-enabled design for the NOMA-BF system to optimize the active beamforming and power allocation coefficient (PAC) of users at the transmitter in the first stage and passive beamforming at IRS in the 2nd stage to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the network. However, an increment in the number of supportable users with the NOMA-BF system will lead to NOMA user interference and inter-cluster interference (ICI). To mitigate the effect of ICI, first zero-forcing beamforming along with efficient user clustering algorithm is exploited and then NOMA user interference is tackled efficiently through a proposed iterative algorithm that computes PAC of NOMA user through simplified closed-form expression under the required system constraints. In the 2nd stage, the problem of passive beamforming is solved through a technique based on difference-of-convex (DC) programming and successive convex approximation (SCA). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed alternating framework for energy-efficient IRS-assisted NOMA-BF system can achieve convergence within a few iterations and provide efficient performance in terms of EE of the system with low complexity.

Joint Active and Passive Beamforming Design for IRS-Aided Radar-Communication

In this paper, we study an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided radar-communication (Radcom) system, where the IRS is leveraged to help Radcom base station (BS) transmit the joint of communication signals and radar signals for serving communication users and tracking targets simultaneously. The objective of this paper is to minimize the total transmit power at the Radcom BS by jointly optimizing the active beamformers, including communication beamformers and radar beamformers, at the Radcom BS and the phase shifts at the IRS, subject to the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) required by communication users, the minimum SINR required by the radar, and the cross-correlation pattern design. In particular, we consider two cases, namely, case I and case II, based on the presence or absence of the radar cross-correlation design and the interference introduced by the IRS on the Radcom BS. For case I where the cross correlation design and the interference are not considered, we prove that the dedicated radar signals are not needed, which significantly reduces implementation complexity and simplifies algorithm design. Then, a penalty-based algorithm is proposed to solve the resulting non-convex optimization problem. Whereas for case II considering the cross-correlation design and the interference, we unveil that the dedicated radar signals are needed in general to enhance the system performance. Since the resulting optimization problem is more challenging to solve as compared with the case I, the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) based alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed algorithms and also show the superiority of the proposed scheme over various benchmark schemes.

Collaborative Intelligent Reflecting Surface Networks with Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is envisioned to be widely applied in future wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate a multi-user communication system assisted by cooperative IRS devices with the capability of energy harvesting. Aiming to maximize the long-term average achievable system rate, an optimization problem is formulated by jointly designing the transmit beamforming at the base station (BS) and discrete phase shift beamforming at the IRSs, with the constraints on transmit power, user data rate requirement and IRS energy buffer size. Considering time-varying channels and stochastic arrivals of energy harvested by the IRSs, we first formulate the problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) and then develop a novel multi-agent Q-mix (MAQ) framework with two layers to decouple the optimization parameters. The higher layer is for optimizing phase shift resolutions, and the lower one is for phase shift beamforming and power allocation. Since the phase shift optimization is an integer programming problem with a large-scale action space, we improve MAQ by incorporating the Wolpertinger method, namely, MAQ-WP algorithm to achieve a sub-optimality with reduced dimensions of action space. In addition, as MAQ-WP is still of high complexity to achieve good performance, we propose a policy gradient-based MAQ algorithm, namely, MAQ-PG, by mapping the discrete phase shift actions into a continuous space at the cost of a slight performance loss. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MAQ-WP and MAQ-PG algorithms can converge faster and achieve data rate improvements of 10.7% and 8.8% over the conventional multi-agent DDPG, respectively.

UAV Trajectory and Beamforming Optimization for Integrated Periodic Sensing and Communication

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is expected to bring transformative improvement to the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. However, due to shared spectrum resources, it is challenging to achieve a critical trade-off between these two integrated functionalities. To address this issue, we propose in this paper a new integrated \emph{periodic} sensing and communication mechanism for the UAV-enable ISAC system. Specifically, the user achievable rate is maximized via jointly optimizing UAV trajectory, transmit precoder, and sensing start instant, subject to the sensing frequency and beam pattern gain constraints. Despite that this problem is highly non-convex and involves an infinite number of variables, we obtain the optimal transmit precoder and derive the optimal achievable rate in closed-form for any given UAV location to facilitate the UAV trajectory design. Furthermore, we first prove the structural symmetry between optimal solutions in different ISAC frames without location constraints and then propose a high-quality UAV trajectory and sensing optimization algorithm for the general location-constrained case. Simulation results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed design and also unveil a more flexible trade-off in ISAC systems over benchmark schemes.

The Path forward to N$^3$LO

The LHC experiments will achieve percent level precision measurements of processes key to some of the most pressing questions of contemporary particle physics: What is the nature of the Higgs boson? Can we successfully describe the interaction of fundamental particles at high energies? Is there physics beyond the Standard Model at the LHC? The capability to predict and describe such observables at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in QCD perturbation theory is paramount to fully exploit these experimental measurements. We describe the current status of N$^3$LO predictions and highlight their importance in the upcoming precision phase of the LHC. Furthermore, we identify key conceptual and mathematical developments necessary to see wide-spread N$^3$LO phenomenology come to fruition.

Multi-Antenna Systems by Transmissive Reconfigurable Meta-Surface

Reconfigurable meta-surface (RMS) is proposed as a very promising and novel technology, which is composed of a large number of low-cost passive elements, and can achieve passive beamforming by controlling the amplitude and phase of incident electromagnetic (EM) waves. Therefore, in order to solve the challenges of high power consumption and high cost of existing base stations (BSs), we propose a low-cost and low-power consumption transmissive RMS multi-antenna system in this paper. Specifically, we first provide an overview of the transmissive RMS multi-antenna system, including its advantages, network architecture, transmission mechanism, modulation principle, channel model and channel estimation technique. Then, we address transceiver design and optimization for downlink (DL) and uplink (UL), and some numerical results are also given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Finally, several potential research directions of the transmissive RMS multi-antenna system are given to inspire further investigation in future work.

Active IRS Aided Multiple Access for Energy-Constrained IoT Systems

We investigate the fundamental multiple access (MA) scheme in an active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided energy-constrained Internet-of-Things (IoT) system, where an active IRS is deployed to assist the uplink transmission from multiple IoT devices to an access point (AP). Our goal is to maximize the sum throughput by optimizing the IRS beamforming vectors across time and resource allocation. To this end, we first study two typical active IRS aided MA schemes, namely time division multiple access (TDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), by analytically comparing their achievable sum throughput and proposing corresponding algorithms. Interestingly, we prove that given only one available IRS beamforming vector, the NOMA-based scheme generally achieves a larger throughput than the TDMA-based scheme, whereas the latter can potentially outperform the former if multiple IRS beamforming vectors are available to harness the favorable time selectivity of the IRS. To strike a flexible balance between the system performance and the associated signaling overhead incurred by more IRS beamforming vectors, we then propose a general hybrid TDMA-NOMA scheme with user grouping, where the devices in the same group transmit simultaneously via NOMA while devices in different groups occupy orthogonal time slots. By controlling the number of groups, the hybrid TDMA-NOMA scheme is applicable for any given number of IRS beamforming vectors available. Despite of the non-convexity of the considered optimization problem, we propose an efficient algorithm based on alternating optimization. Simulation results illustrate the practical superiorities of the active IRS over the passive IRS in terms of the coverage extension and supporting multiple energy-limited devices, and demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed hybrid MA scheme for flexibly balancing the performance-cost tradeoff.

Robust Beamforming Design and Time Allocation for IRS-assisted Wireless Powered Communication Networks

In this paper, a novel intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted wireless powered communication network (WPCN) architecture is proposed for power-constrained Internet-of-Things (IoT) smart devices, where IRS is exploited to improve the performance of WPCN under imperfect channel state information (CSI). We formulate a hybrid access point (HAP) transmit energy minimization problem by jointly optimizing time allocation, HAP energy beamforming, receiving beamforming, user transmit power allocation, IRS energy reflection coefficient and information reflection coefficient under the imperfect CSI and non-linear energy harvesting model. On account of the high coupling of optimization variables, the formulated problem is a non-convex optimization problem that is difficult to solve directly. To address the above-mentioned challenging problem, alternating optimization (AO) technique is applied to decouple the optimization variables to solve the problem. Specifically, through AO, time allocation, HAP energy beamforming, receiving beamforming, user transmit power allocation, IRS energy reflection coefficient and information reflection coefficient are divided into three sub-problems to be solved alternately. The difference-of-convex (DC) programming is used to solve the non-convex rank-one constraint in solving IRS energy reflection coefficient and information reflection coefficient. Numerical simulations verify the superiority of the proposed optimization algorithm in decreasing HAP transmit energy compared with other benchmark schemes.

IRS-Aided WPCNs: A New Optimization Framework for Dynamic IRS Beamforming

In this paper, we propose a new dynamic IRS beamforming framework to boost the sum throughput of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided wireless powered communication network (WPCN). Specifically, the IRS phase-shift vectors across time and resource allocation are jointly optimized to enhance the efficiencies of both downlink wireless power transfer (DL WPT) and uplink wireless information transmission (UL WIT) between a hybrid access point (HAP) and multiple wirelessly powered devices. To this end, we first study three special cases of the dynamic IRS beamforming, namely user-adaptive IRS beamforming, UL-adaptive IRS beamforming, and static IRS beamforming,by characterizing their optimal performance relationships and proposing corresponding algorithms. Interestingly, it is rigorously proved that the latter two cases achieve the same throughput, thus helping halve the number of IRS phase shifts to be optimized and signalling overhead practically required for UL-adaptive IRS beamforming. Then, we propose a general optimization framework for dynamic IRS beamforming, which is applicable for any given number of IRS phase-shift vectors available. Despite of the non-convexity of the general problem with highly coupled optimization variables, we propose two algorithms to solve it and particularly, the low-complexity algorithm exploits the intrinsic structure of the optimal solution as well as the solutions to the cases with user-adaptive and static IRS beamforming. Simulation results validate our theoretical findings, illustrate the practical significance of IRS with dynamic beamforming for spectral and energy efficient WPCNs, and demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed designs over various benchmark schemes.

Hybrid Supervision Learning for Pathology Whole Slide Image Classification

Weak supervision learning on classification labels has demonstrated high performance in various tasks, while a few pixel-level fine annotations are also affordable. Naturally a question comes to us that whether the combination of pixel-level (e.g., segmentation) and image level (e.g., classification) annotation can introduce further improvement. However in computational pathology this is a difficult task for this reason: High resolution of whole slide images makes it difficult to do end-to-end classification model training, which is challenging to research of weak or hybrid supervision learning in the past. To handle this problem, we propose a hybrid supervision learning framework for this kind of high resolution images with sufficient image-level coarse annotations and a few pixel-level fine labels. This framework, when applied in training patch model, can carefully make use of coarse image-level labels to refine generated pixel-level pseudo labels. Complete strategy is proposed to suppress pixel-level false positives and false negatives. A large hybrid annotated dataset is used to evaluate the effectiveness of hybrid supervision learning. By extracting pixel-level pseudo labels in initially image-level labeled samples, we achieve 5.2% higher specificity than purely training on existing labels while retaining 100% sensitivity, in the task of image-level classification to be positive or negative.

Four-lepton decays of neutral vector mesons

We investigate the rare electromagnetic decays of neutral vector mesons (exemplified by $J/ψ$, $Υ$, $ρ^0$, $ω,ϕ$, \ldots) into four charged leptons ($2(e^+e^-)$, $2(μ^+μ^-)$, $2(τ^+τ^-)$, $e^+e^-μ^+μ^-$, $e^+e^-τ^+τ^-$, \ldots) at lowest order in QED. In contrast to the case of vector meson decay into a single pair of leptons, the lepton mass must be retained in these four-lepton decay channels to cutoff the mass singularity. Owing to more pronounced collinear enhancement, the branching fractions of vector mesons decays into $ 2(e^+e^-)$ are considerably greater than those for decays into $2(μ^+μ^-)$. The decay channels $J/ψ(Υ)\to 2(e^+e^-), e^+e^-μ^+μ^-$ are predicted to have branching fractions of order $10^{-5}$, which appear to have bright observation prospect at {\tt BESIII}, {\tt Belle 2} and {\tt LHC} experiments.

Beamforming Design and Power Allocation for Transmissive RMS-based Transmitter Architectures

This letter investigates a downlink multiple input single output (MISO) system based on transmissive reconfigurable metasurface (RMS) transmitter. Specifically, a transmitter design based on a transmissive RMS equipped with a feed antenna is first proposed. Then, in order to maximize the achievable sum-rate of the system, the beamforming design and power allocation are jointly optimized. Since the optimization variables are coupled, this formulated optimization problem is non-convex, so it is difficult to solve it directly. To solve this problem, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) technique based on difference-of-convex (DC) programming and successive convex approximation (SCA). Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm can achieve convergence and improve the achievable sum-rate of the system.

IRS-aided Wireless Powered MEC Systems: TDMA or NOMA for Computation Offloading?

An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided wireless powered mobile edge computing (WP-MEC) system is conceived, where each device's computational task can be divided into two parts for local computing and offloading to mobile edge computing (MEC) servers, respectively. Both time division multiple access (TDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes are considered for uplink (UL) offloading. Given the capability of IRSs in intelligently reconfiguring wireless channels over time, it is fundamentally unknown which multiple access scheme is superior for MEC UL offloading. To answer this question, we first investigate the impact of three different dynamic IRS beamforming (DIBF) schemes on the computation rate of both offloading schemes, based on the flexibility for the IRS in adjusting its beamforming (BF) vector in each transmission frame. Under the DIBF framework, computation rate maximization problems are formulated for both the NOMA and TDMA schemes, respectively, by jointly optimizing the IRS passive BF and the resource allocation. We rigorously prove that offloading adopting TDMA can achieve the same computation rate as that of NOMA, when all the devices share the same IRS BF vector during the UL offloading. By contrast, offloading exploiting TDMA outperforms NOMA, when the IRS BF vector can be flexibly adapted for UL offloading. Despite the non-convexity of the computation rate maximization problems for each DIBF scheme associated with highly coupled optimization variables, we conceive computationally efficient algorithms by invoking alternating optimization. Our numerical results demonstrate the significant performance gains achieved by the proposed designs over various benchmark schemes.

Rare decays of the positronium ion and molecule, $\text{Ps}^{-}\to e^{-}γ$ and $\text{Ps}_{2}\to e^{+}e^{-}γ,~γγ,~e^{+}e^{-}$

Decay rates of the positronium molecule $\text{Ps}_{2}$ into two photons and into an electron-positron pair are determined. Previous studies find that these rates are very different, \[ Γ\left(\text{Ps}_{2}\to e^{+}e^{-}\right)/Γ\left(\text{Ps}_{2}\toγγ\right)\simeq250\text{ (previous studies)}. \] This is puzzling since both processes have two body final states and are of the same order in the fine structure constant. We propose a simple calculational method and test it with the well-established decay of the positronium ion into an electron and a photon. We then employ it to correct predictions for both these $\text{Ps}_{2}$ decays. We find that previous studies overestimated the $e^{+}e^{-}$ and underestimated the $γγ$ channel by factors of about 5.44 and 3.93 respectively. Our results give $Γ\left(\text{Ps}_2\to e^+e^-\right)/Γ\left(\text{Ps}_2 \to γγ\right) \simeq 11.7$.
