On the quasi-three dimensional configuration of magnetic clouds

We develop an optimization approach to model the magnetic field configuration of magnetic clouds, based on a linear-force free formulation in three dimensions. Such a solution, dubbed the Freidberg solution, is kin to the axi-symmetric Lundquist solution, but with more general "helical symmetry". The merit of our approach is demonstrated via its application to two case studies of in-situ measured magnetic clouds. Both yield results of reduced $χ^2\approx 1$. Case 1 shows a winding flux rope configuration with one major polarity. Case 2 exhibits a double-helix configuration with two flux bundles winding around each other and rooted on regions of mixed polarities. This study demonstrates the three-dimensional complexity of the magnetic cloud structures.

Intrinsic current drive by electromagnetic electron drift wave turbulence in tokamak pedestal region

The local intrinsic parallel current density driven by electron drift wave (DW) turbulence including electromagnetic (EM) effects is analytically studied. The scalings of the ratios of intrinsic current density driven by residual turbulent flux and by turbulent source to the bootstrap current density with electron density and temperature are predicted to be $T_e^{3/4}T_i/n_e$ and $T_eT_i/n_e$, respectively. Based on the typical parameters in DIII-D pedestal region, the local intrinsic current density driven by both the residual turbulent flux and the turbulent source is negligible. However, despite the negligible turbulent source driven current, the residual turbulent flux driven local intrinsic current density by EM DW turbulence can reach about 66% of the bootstrap current density for ITER pedestal parameters due to much lower collisionality in ITER than in DIII-D. Moreover, the contributions from adiabatic ES parts, non-adiabatic ES parts and non-adiabatic EM parts of the plasma response to electromagnetic fluctuations are analyzed. It is found that there exists strong cancelation between non-adiabatic ES response and the non-adiabatic EM response for the ITER pedestal case, and thus the kinetic stress contributed by the adiabatic ES response of parallel electron pressure dominates the intrinsic current drive. This is different from the ES electron DW case. Therefore, the EM effects on turbulence driven intrinsic current density should be carefully considered in the future reactor with high ratio of electron pressure to the magnetic pressure and steep pressure profile.

Intrinsic current drive by electromagnetic electron temperature gradient turbulence in tokamak plasmas

The mean parallel current density evolution equation is presented using electromagnetic (EM) gyrokinetic equation. There exist two types of intrinsic current driving mechanisms resulted from EM electron temperature gradient (ETG) turbulence. The first type is the divergence of residual turbulent flux including a residual stress-like term and a kinetic stress-like term. The second type is named as residual turbulent source, which is driven by the correlation between density and parallel electric field fluctuations. The intrinsic current density driven by the residual turbulent source is negligible as compared to that driven by the residual turbulent flux. The ratio of intrinsic current density driven by EM ETG turbulence to the background bootstrap current density is estimated. The local intrinsic current density driven by the residual turbulent flux for mesoscale variation of turbulent flux can reach about 80% of the bootstrap current density in the core region of ITER standard scenario, but there is no net intrinsic current on a global scale. Based on this, the local intrinsic current driven by EM micro-turbulence and its effects on local modification of the profile of safety factor may be needed to be carefully taken into account in the future device with high beta_e which is the ratio between electron pressure to the magnetic pressure.

Data-driven MHD Simulation of the Formation and Initiation of a Large-scale Pre-flare Magnetic Flux Rope in Solar Active Region 12371

Solar eruptions are the most powerful drivers of space weather. To understand their cause and nature, it is crucial to know how the coronal magnetic field evolves before eruption. Here we study the formation process of a relatively large-scale magnetic flux rope (MFR) in active region NOAA~12371 that erupts with a major flare and coronal mass ejection on 2015 June 21. A data-driven numerical magnetohydrodynamic model is employed to simulate three-dimensional coronal magnetic field evolution of one-day duration before the eruption. Comparison between the observed features and our modeled magnetic field discloses how the pre-eruption MFR forms. Initially, the magnetic field lines were weakly twisted as being simple sheared arcades. Then a long MFR was formed along the polarity inversion line due to the complex photospheric motion, which is mainly shearing rather than twisting. The presence of the MFR is evidenced by a coherent set of magnetic field lines with twist number above unity. Below the MFR a current sheet is shown in the model, suggesting that tether-cutting reconnection plays a key role in the MFR formation. The MFR's flux grows as more and more field lines are twisted due to continuous injection of magnetic helicity by the photospheric motions. Meanwhile, the height of the MFR's axis increases monotonely from its formation. By an analysis of the decay index of its overlying field, we suggest that it is because the MFR runs into the torus instability regime and becomes unstable that finally triggers the eruption.

A Study of Pre-Flare Solar Coronal Magnetic Fields: Magnetic Flux Ropes

Magnetic flux ropes (MFRs) are thought to be the central structure of solar eruptions, and their ideal MHD instabilities can trigger the eruption. Here we performed a study of all the MFR configurations that lead to major solar flares, either eruptive or confined, from 2011 to 2017 near the solar disk center. The coronal magnetic field is reconstructed from observed magnetograms, and based on magnetic twist distribution, we identified the MFR, which is defined as a coherent group of magnetic field lines winding an axis with more than one turn. It is found that 90% of the events possess pre-flare MFRs, and their three-dimensional structures are much more complex in details than theoretical MFR models. We further constructed a diagram based on two parameters, the magnetic twist number which controls the kink instability (KI), and the decay index which controls the torus instability (TI). It clearly shows lower limits for TI and KI thresholds, which are $n_{\rm crit} = 1.3$ and $|T_w|_{\rm crit} = 2$, respectively, as all the events above $n_{\rm crit}$ and nearly 90% of the events above $|T_w|_{\rm crit}$ erupted. Furthermore, by such criterion, over 70% of the events can be discriminated between eruptive and confined flares, and KI seems to play a nearly equally important role as TI in discriminating between the two types of flare. There are more than half of events with both parameters below the lower limits, and 29% are eruptive. These events might be triggered by magnetic reconnection rather than MHD instabilities.

E-Sports Talent Scouting Based on Multimodal Twitch Stream Data

We propose and investigate feasibility of a novel task that consists in finding e-sports talent using multimodal Twitch chat and video stream data. In that, we focus on predicting the ranks of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) gamers who broadcast their games on Twitch. During January 2019-April 2019, we have built two Twitch stream collections: One for 425 publicly ranked CS:GO gamers and one for 9,928 unranked CS:GO gamers. We extract neural features from video, audio and text chat data and estimate modality-specific probabilities for a gamer to be top-ranked during the data collection time-frame. A hierarchical Bayesian model is then used to pool the evidence across modalities and generate estimates of intrinsic skill for each gamer. Our modeling is validated through correlating the intrinsic skill predictions with May 2019 ranks of the publicly profiled gamers.

Effects of Coronal Density and Magnetic Field Distributions on a Global Solar EUV Wave

We investigate a global extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) wave associated with a coronal mass ejection (CME)-driven shock on 2017 September 10. The EUV wave is transmitted by north- and south-polar coronal holes (CHs), which is observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory A (STEREO-A) from opposite sides of the Sun. We obtain key findings on how the EUV wave interacts with multiple coronal structures, and on its connection with the CME-driven shock: (1) the transmitted EUV wave is still connected with the shock that is incurvated to the Sun, after the shock has reached the opposite side of the eruption; (2) the south CH transmitted EUV wave is accelerated inside an on-disk, low-density region with closed magnetic fields, which implies that an EUV wave can be accelerated in both open and closed magnetic field regions; (3) part of the primary EUV wavefront turns around a bright point (BP) with a bipolar magnetic structure when it approaches a dim, low-density filament channel near the BP; (4) the primary EUV wave is diffused and apparently halted near the boundaries of remote active regions (ARs) that are far from the eruption, and no obvious AR related secondary waves are detected; (5) the EUV wave extends to an unprecedented scale of ~360° in latitudes, which is attributed to the polar CH transmission. These results provide insights into the effects of coronal density and magnetic field distributions on the evolution of an EUV wave, and into the connection between the EUV wave and the associated CME-driven shock.

A Stealth CME Bracketed between Slow and Fast Wind Producing Unexpected Geo-effectiveness

We investigate how a weak coronal mass ejection (CME) launched on 2016 October 8 without obvious signatures in the low corona produced a relatively intense geomagnetic storm. Remote sensing observations from SDO, STEREO and SOHO and in situ measurements from WIND are employed to track the CME from the Sun to the Earth. Using a graduated cylindrical shell (GCS) model, we estimate the propagation direction and the morphology of the CME near the Sun. CME kinematics are determined from the wide-angle imaging observations of STEREO A and are used to predict the CME arrival time and speed at the Earth. We compare ENLIL MHD simulation results with in situ measurements to illustrate the background solar wind where the CME was propagating. We also apply a Grad--Shafranov technique to reconstruct the flux rope structure from in situ measurements in order to understand the geo-effectiveness associated with the CME magnetic field structure. Key results are obtained concerning how a weak CME can generate a relatively intense geomagnetic storm: (1) there were coronal holes at low latitudes, which could produce high speed streams (HSSs) to interact with the CME in interplanetary space; (2) the CME was bracketed between a slow wind ahead and a HSS behind, which enhanced the southward magnetic field inside the CME and gave rise to the unexpected geomagnetic storm.

Reconfigurable vortex beam generator based on the Fourier transformation principle

A method to generate the optical vortex beam with arbitrary superposition of different orders of orbital angular momentum (OAM) on a photonic chip is proposed. The distributed Fourier holographic gratings are proposed to convert the propagating wave in waveguides to a vortex beam in the free space, and the components of different OAMs can be controlled by the amplitude and phases of on-chip incident light based on the principle of Fourier transformation. As an example, we studied a typical device composed of nine Fourier holographic gratings on fan-shaped waveguides. By scalar diffraction calculation, the OAM of the optical beam from the reconfigurable vortex beam generator can be controlled on-demand from -2nd to 2nd by adjusting the phase of input light fields, which is demonstrated numerically with the fidelity of generated optical vortex beam above 0.69. The working bandwidth of the Fourier holographic grating is about 80 nm with a fidelity above 0.6. Our work provides an feasible method to manipulate the vortex beam or detect arbitrary superposition of OAMs, which can be used in integrated photonics structures for optical trapping, signal processing, and imaging.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation for Cache-Assisted Mobile Edge Computing

In this paper, we jointly consider communication, caching and computation in a multi-user cache-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) system, consisting of one base station (BS) of caching and computing capabilities and multiple users with computation-intensive and latency-sensitive applications. We propose a joint caching and offloading mechanism which involves task uploading and executing for tasks with uncached computation results as well as computation result downloading for all tasks at the BS, and efficiently utilizes multi-user diversity and multicasting opportunities. Then, we formulate the average total energy minimization problem subject to the caching and deadline constraints to optimally allocate the storage resource at the BS for caching computation results as well as the uploading and downloading time durations. The problem is a challenging mixed discrete-continuous optimization problem. We show that strong duality holds, and obtain an optimal solution using a dual method. To reduce the computational complexity, we further propose a low-complexity suboptimal solution. Finally, numerical results show that the proposed suboptimal solution outperforms existing comparison schemes.
