Liquid Metal-Exfoliated SnO$_2$-Based Mixed-dimensional Heterostructures for Visible-to-Near-Infrared Photodetection

Ultra-thin two-dimensional (2D) materials have gained significant attention for making next-generation optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a large-area heterojunction photodetector fabricated using a liquid metal-printed 2D $\text{SnO}_2$ layer transferred onto CdTe thin films. The resulting device demonstrates efficient broadband light sensing from visible to near-infrared wavelengths, with enhanced detectivity and faster photo response than bare CdTe photodetectors. Significantly, the device shows a nearly $10^5$-fold increase in current than the dark current level when illuminated with a 780 nm laser and achieves a specific detectivity of around $10^{12} \, \text{Jones}$, nearly two orders of magnitude higher than a device with pure CdTe thin film. Additionally, temperature-dependent optoelectronic testing shows that the device maintains a stable response up to $140^\circ \text{C}$ and generates distinctive photocurrent at temperatures up to $80^\circ \text{C}$, demonstrating its thermal stability. Using band structure analysis, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and photocurrent mapping, the formation of a $p$-$n$ junction is indicated, contributing to the enhanced photo response attributed to the efficient carrier separation by the built-in potential in the hetero-junction and the superior electron mobility of 2D $\text{SnO}_2$. Our results highlight the effectiveness of integrating liquid metal-exfoliated 2D materials for enhanced photodetector performance.

Pressure-induced dimerization and molecular orbitals formation in Na2RuO3 with strong correlation-enhanced spin-orbit coupling effect

First-principles calculations and simulations are conducted to clarify the nonmagnetic insulating ground state of the honeycomb lattice compound Na2RuO3 with 4d^4 electronic configuration and explore the evolutions of crystal structure and electronic property under pressure. We reveal that individual Coulomb correlation or spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect cannot reproduce the experimentally observed nonmagnetic insulating behavior of Na2RuO3, whereas the Coulomb correlation enhanced SOC interactions give rise to an unusual spin-orbital-entangled J = 0 nonmagnetic insulating state, which contrasts with the SOC assisted Mott insulating state in d^5 ruthenates and iridates. Furthermore, a pressure-induced structural dimerization transition has been predicted around 15-17.5 GPa. The honeycomb lattice of the high-pressure dimerized phase features with parallel pattern of the short Ru-Ru dimers aligning along the crystallographic b direction. Accompanied with the structural dimerization, the electronic structure shows striking reconstruction by formation of molecular orbitals. Interestingly, the cooperation of Coulomb correlation together with SOC can realize a nonmagnetic insulating state in the high-pressure dimerized phase. The d^4 ruthenate Na2RuO3 with honeycomb lattice will provide a new platform to explore unusual physics and rich phase diagram due to the delicate interplay of lattice degree of freedom, electron correlations, and SOC interactions.

Improved Polar-code-based Efficient Post-processing Algorithm for Quantum Key Distribution

Combined with one-time pad encryption scheme, quantum key distribution guarantees the unconditional security of communication in theory. However, error correction and privacy amplification in the post-processing phase of quantum key distribution result in high time delay, which limits the final secret key generation rate and the practicability of quantum key distribution systems. To alleviate this limitation, this paper proposes an efficient post-processing algorithm based on polar codes for quantum key distribution. In this algorithm, by analyzing the channel capacity of the main channel and the wiretap channel respectively under the Wyner's wiretap channel model, we design a codeword structure of polar codes, so that the error correction and privacy amplification could be completed synchronously in a single step. Through combining error correction and privacy amplification into one single step, this efficient post-processing algorithm reduces complexity of the system and lower the post-processing delay. Besides, the reliable and secure communicaiton conditions for this algorithm has been given in this paper. Simulation results show that this post-processing algorithm satisfies the reliable and secure communication conditions well.

Pressure-induced structural transition, metallization, and topological superconductivity in PdSSe

Pressure not only provides a powerful way to tune the crystal structure of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) but also promotes the discovery of exotic electronic states and intriguing phenomena. Structural transitions from the quasi-two-dimensional layered orthorhombic phase to three-dimensional cubic pyrite phase, metallization, and superconductivity under high pressure have been observed experimentally in TMDCs materials PdS2 and PdSe2. Here, we report a theoretical prediction of the pressure-induced evolutions of crystal structure and electronic structure of PdSSe, an isomorphous intermediate material of the orthorhombic PdS2 and PdSe2. A series of pressure-induced structural phase transitions from the layered orthorhombic structure into an intermediate phase, then to a cubic phase are revealed. The intermediate phase features the same structure symmetry as the ambient orthorhombic phase, except for drastic collapsed interlayer distances and striking changes of the coordination polyhedron. Furthermore, the structural phase transitions are accompanied by electronic structure variations from semiconductor to semimetal, which are attributed to bandwidth broaden and orbital-selective mechanisms. Especially, the cubic phase PdSSe is distinct from the cubic PdS2 and PdSe2 materials by breaking inversion and mirror-plane symmetries, but showing similar superconductivity under high pressure, which is originated from strong electron-phonon coupling interactions concomitant with topologically nontrivial Weyl and high-fold Fermions. The intricate interplay between lattice, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom as well as the topologically nontrivial states in these compounds will further stimulate wide interest to explore the exotic physics of the TMDCs materials.

Stacking effect and Coulomb correlation in layered charge density wave phase of 1T-NbS2

Based on first-principles calculations, we explored the interplay between stacking effect and electron-electron correlation in the layered vdW material of bulk 1T-NbS2 with a 2D charge density wave (CDW) order. Without considering the Coulomb correlation, two energetically favorable out-of-plane stacking configurations are identified: one is a metallic phase with a single-layer stacking pattern, another is a band insulator with a paired-bilayer stacking configuration. Even though the Coulomb correlation is taken into account, the two energetic favorable stacking orders are still far more stable than other stacking orders. Furthermore, increasing the Coulomb interaction, the paired-bilayer stacking configuration transforms from nonmagnetic band insulator to antiferromagnetic insulator, while the single-layer stacking undergoes a Slater-Mott metal-insulator transition, which indicates the non-negligible role of electron-electron correlation interactions. In addition, the electronic structure and magnetic ground state change drastically among different stacking configurations, providing a platform to tune the electronic structures and interlayer magnetic interactions by altering the stacking order. In contrast to the widely accepted scenario of Mott localization as the driving force behind the gap formation in the CDW phase of layered transition metal dichalcogenides, our results not only highlight the crucial role of stacking order in the electronic structures of 1T-NbS2, but also shed fresh light on the distinct effects of Coulomb interaction in different stacking arrangements.

CLIP4Clip: An Empirical Study of CLIP for End to End Video Clip Retrieval

Video-text retrieval plays an essential role in multi-modal research and has been widely used in many real-world web applications. The CLIP (Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training), an image-language pre-training model, has demonstrated the power of visual concepts learning from web collected image-text datasets. In this paper, we propose a CLIP4Clip model to transfer the knowledge of the CLIP model to video-language retrieval in an end-to-end manner. Several questions are investigated via empirical studies: 1) Whether image feature is enough for video-text retrieval? 2) How a post-pretraining on a large-scale video-text dataset based on the CLIP affect the performance? 3) What is the practical mechanism to model temporal dependency between video frames? And 4) The Hyper-parameters sensitivity of the model on video-text retrieval task. Extensive experimental results present that the CLIP4Clip model transferred from the CLIP can achieve SOTA results on various video-text retrieval datasets, including MSR-VTT, MSVC, LSMDC, ActivityNet, and DiDeMo. We release our code at https://github.com/ArrowLuo/CLIP4Clip.

Charge density wave instability and pressure-induced superconductivity in bulk 1T-NbS2

Charge-density-wave (CDW) instability and pressure-induced superconductivity in bulk 1T-NbS2 are predicted theoretically by first-principles calculations. We reveal a CDW instability towards the formation of a stable commensurate CDW order, resulting in a sqart(13)*sqart(13) structural reconstruction featured with star-of-David clusters. The CDW phase exhibits one-dimensional metallic behavior with in-plane flat-band characteristics, and coexists with an orbital-density-wave order predominantly contributed by 4d_(z^2-r^2 ) orbital from the inner Nb atoms of the star-of-David cluster. By doubling the cell of the CCDW phase along the layer stacking direction, a metal-insulator transition may be realized in the CDW phase in case the interlayer antiferromagnetic ordering and Coulomb correlation effect have been considered simultaneously. Bare electron susceptibility, phonon linewidth and electron-phonon coupling calculations suggest that the CDW instability is driven by softened phonon modes due to the strong electron-phonon coupling interactions. CDW order can be suppressed by pressure, concomitant with appearance of superconductivity. Our theoretical predictions call for experimental investigations to further clarify the transport and magnetic properties of 1T-NbS2. Furthermore, it would also be very interesting to explore the possibility to realize the CDW order coexisting with the superconductivity in bulk 1T-NbS2.

Structural transition, metallization and superconductivity in quasi 2D layered PdS$_2$ under compression

Based on first-principles simulations and calculations, we explore the evolution of crystal structure, electronic structure and transport properties of quasi 2D layered PdS2 under uniaxial stress and hydrostatic pressure. The coordination of the Pd ions plays crucial roles in the structural transition, electronic structure and transport properties of PdS2. An interesting ferroelastic phase transition with lattice reorientation is revealed under uniaxial compressive stress, which originates from the bond reconstructions of the unusual PdS4 square-planar coordination. By contrast, the layered structure transforms to 3D cubic pyrite-type structure under hydrostatic pressure. In contrast to the experimental proposed coexistence of layered PdS2-type structure with cubic pyrite-type structure at intermediate pressure range, we predict that the compression-induced intermediate phase showing the same structural symmetry with the ambient phase, except of sharply contracted interlayer-distances. The coordination environments of the Pd ions have changed from square-planar to distorted octahedra in the intermediate phase, which results in the bandwidth broaden and orbital-selective metallization. In addition, the superconductivity comes from the cubic pyrite-type structure protected topological nodal-line states. The strong correlations between structural transition, electronic structure and transport properties in PdS2 provide a platform to study the fundamental physics of the interplay between crystal structure and transport behavior, and the competition between diverse phases.

Analog Weights in ReRAM DNN Accelerators

Artificial neural networks have become ubiquitous in modern life, which has triggered the emergence of a new class of application specific integrated circuits for their acceleration. ReRAM-based accelerators have gained significant traction due to their ability to leverage in-memory computations. In a crossbar structure, they can perform multiply-and-accumulate operations more efficiently than standard CMOS logic. By virtue of being resistive switches, ReRAM switches can only reliably store one of two states. This is a severe limitation on the range of values in a computational kernel. This paper presents a novel scheme in alleviating the single-bit-per-device restriction by exploiting frequency dependence of v-i plane hysteresis, and assigning kernel information not only to the device conductance but also partially distributing it to the frequency of a time-varying input. We show this approach reduces average power consumption for a single crossbar convolution by up to a factor of x16 for an unsigned 8-bit input image, where each convolutional process consumes a worst-case of 1.1mW, and reduces area by a factor of x8, without reducing accuracy to the level of binarized neural networks. This presents a massive saving in computing cost when there are many simultaneous in-situ multiply-and-accumulate processes occurring across different crossbars.
