Modeling Spontaneous Exit Choices in Intercity Expressway Traffic with Quantum Walk

In intercity expressway traffic, a driver frequently makes decisions to adjust driving behavior according to time, location and traffic conditions, which further affects when and where the driver will leave away from the expressway traffic. Spontaneous exit choices by drivers are hard to observe and thus it is a challenge to model intercity expressway traffic sufficiently. In this paper, we developed a Spontaneous Quantum Traffic Model (SQTM), which models the stochastic traffic fluctuation caused by spontaneous exit choices and the residual regularity fluctuation with Quantum Walk and Autoregressive Moving Average model (ARMA), respectively. SQTM considers the spontaneous exit choice of a driver as a quantum stochastic process with a dynamical probability function varies according to time, location and traffic conditions. A quantum walk is applied to update the probability function, which simulates when and where a driver will leave the traffic affected by spontaneous exit choices. We validate our model with hourly traffic data from 7 exits from the Nanjing-Changzhou expressway in Eastern China. For the 7 exits, the coefficients of determination of SQTM ranged from 0.5 to 0.85. Compared with classical random walk and ARMA model, the coefficients of determination were increased by 21.28% to 104.98%, and relative mean square error decreased by 11.61% to 32.92%. We conclude that SQTM provides new potential for modeling traffic dynamics with consideration of unobservable spontaneous driver's decision-making.

Fishnet Model with Order Statistics for Tail Probability of Failure of Nacreous Biomimetic Materials with Softening Interlaminar Links

The staggered (or imbricated) lamellar "brick-and-mortar" nanostructure of nacre endows nacre with strength and fracture toughness values exceeding by an order of magnitude those of the constituents, and inspires the advent of new robust biomimetic materials. While many deterministic studies clarified these advantageous features in the mean sense, a closed-form statistical model is indispensable for determining the tail probability of failure in the range of 1 in a million, which is what is demanded for most engineering applications. In the authors' preceding study, the so-called `fishnet' statistics, exemplified by a diagonally pulled fishnet, was conceived to describe the probability distribution. The fishnet links, representing interlaminar bonds, were considered to be elastic perfectly-brittle. However, the links may be quasibrittle or almost ductile, exhibiting gradual postpeak softening in their stress-strain relation. This paper extends the fishnet statistics to links with post-peak softening slope of arbitrary steepness. Probabilistic analysis is enabled by assuming the postpeak softening of a link to occur as a series of finite drops of stress and stiffness. The maximum load of the structure is approximated by the strength of the k-th weakest link (k >= 1), and the distribution of structure strength is expressed as a weighted sum of the distributions of order statistics. The analytically obtained probabilities are compared and verified by histograms of strength data obtained by millions of Monte Carlo simulations for each of many nacreous bodies with different link softening steepness and with various overall shapes.

Fishnet Statistics for Strength Scaling of Nacreous Imbricated Lamellar Materials

Similar to nacre or brick-and-mortar structures, imbricated lamellar structures are widely found in natural and man-made materials and are of interest for biomimetics. These structures are known to be rather insensitive to defects and to have a very high fracture toughness. Their deterministic behavior has been intensely studied, but statistical studies have been rare and is so far there is no undisputed theoretical basis for the probability distribution of strength of nacre. This paper presents a numerical and theoretical study of the PDF of strength and of the corresponding statistical size effect. After a reasonable simplifications of the shear bonds, an axially loaded lamellar shell is statistically modelled as a square fishnet pulled diagonally. A finite element (FE) model is developed and used in Monte Carlo simulations of strength. An analytical model for failure probability of the fishnet is developed and matched to the computed statistical histograms of strength for various sizes. It appears that, with increasing size, the pdf of strength slowly transits from Gaussian to Weilbull distribution but the transition is different from that previously obtained at Northwestern for quasibrittle materials of random heterogeneous mesostructure.

The Study of Cosmic Ray Tomography Using Multiple Scattering of Muons for Imaging of High-Z Materials

Muon tomography is developing as a promising system to detect high-Z (atomic number) material for ensuring homeland security. In the present work, three kinds of spatial locations of materials which are made of aluminum, iron, lead and uranium are simulated with GEANT4 codes, which are horizontal, diagonal and vertical objects, respectively. Two statistical algorithms are used with MATLAB software to reconstruct the image of detected objects, which are the Point of Closet Approach (PoCA) and Maximum Likelihood Scattering-Expectation Maximization iterative algorithm (MLS-EM), respectively. Two analysis methods are used to evaluate the quality of reconstruction image, which are the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) and the localization ROC (LROC) curves, respectively. The reconstructed results show that, compared with PoCA algorithm, MLS-EM can achieve a better image quality in both edge preserving and noise reduction. And according to the analysis of ROC (LROC) curves, it shows that MLS-EM algorithm can discriminate and exclude the presence and location of high-Z object with a high efficiency, which is more flexible with an different EM algorithm employed than prior work. Furthermore the MLS-EM iterative algorithm will be modified and ran in parallel executive way for improving the reconstruction speed.
