Collective oscillation modes of a superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture

In this work, we present a theoretical study for the collective oscillation modes, i.e. quadrupole, radial and axial mode, of a mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids in the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in harmonic trapping potentials with cylindrical symmetry of experimental interest. To this end, we start from the coupled superfluid hydrodynamic equations for the dynamics of Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures and use the scaling theory that has been developed for a coupled system. The collective oscillation modes of Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures are found to crucially depend on the overlap integrals of the spatial derivations of density profiles of the Bose and Fermi superfluids at equilibrium. We not only present the explicit expressions for the overlap density integrals, as well as the frequencies of the collective modes provided that the effective Bose-Fermi coupling is weak, but also test the valid regimes of the analytical approximations by numerical calculations in realistic experimental conditions. In the presence of a repulsive Bose-Fermi interaction, we find that the frequencies of the three collective modes of the Bose and Fermi superfluids are all upshifted, and the change speeds of the frequency shifts in the BCS-BEC crossover can characterize the different groundstate phases of the Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures for different trap geometries.

Dynamics of shock waves in a superfluid unitary Fermi gas

We study the formation and dynamics of shock waves initiated by a repulsive potential in a superfluid unitary Fermi gas by using the order-parameter equation. In the theoretical framework, the regularization process of shock waves mediated by the quantum pressure term is purely dispersive. Our results show good agreement with the experiment of Joseph {\it et al}. [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 150401 (2011)]. We reveal that the boxlike-shaped density peak observed in the experiment consists of many vortex rings due to the transverse instability of the dispersive shock wave. In addition, we study the transition from a sound wave to subsonic shock waves by increasing the strength of the repulsive potential and show a strong qualitative change in the propagation speed of the wavefronts. In the relatively small strength regime, the speed decreases below the sound speed with increasing the strength as a scaling behavior, while in the large regime the speed remains almost unchanged, which is found to be the same expansion speed of the proliferation of the vortex rings.

Dark solitons dynamics and snake instability in superfluid Fermi gases trapped by an anisotropic harmonic potential

We present an investigation of generation, dynamics and stability of dark solitons in anisotropic Fermi gases for a range of particle numbers and trap aspect ratios within the framework of the order-parameter equation. We calculate the periods of dark solitons oscillating in a trap, and find a good agreement with the results based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. By studying the stability of initially off-center dark solitons under various tight transverse confinements in the unitarity limit, we not only give the criterion of dynamical stability, but also find that the soliton and a hybrid of solitons and vortex rings can be characterized by different oscillation period. The stability criterion is not fulfilled by the parameters of the recent experiment [Nature {\bf 499}, 426 (2013)]. Therefore, instead of a very slow oscillation as observed experimentally, we find that the created dark soliton undergoes a transverse snake instability with collapsing into vortex rings, which propagate in soliton-like manner with a nearly two times larger period.

Periodic elastic nanodomains in ultrathin tetrogonal-like BiFeO3 films

We present a synchrotron grazing incidence x-ray diffraction analysis of the domain structure and polar symmetry of highly strained BiFeO3 thin films grown on LaAlO3 substrate. We revealed the existence of periodic elastic nanodomains in the pure tetragonal-like BFO ultrathin films down to a thickness of 6 nm. A unique shear strain accommodation mechanism is disclosed. We further demonstrated that the periodicity of the nanodomains increases with film thickness but deviates from the classical Kittel's square root law in ultrathin thickness regime (6 - 30 nm). Temperature-dependent experiments also reveal the disappearance of periodic modulation above 90C due to a MC-MA structural phase transition.
