A Flexible Fairness Framework with Surrogate Loss Reweighting for Addressing Sociodemographic Disparities

This paper presents a new algorithmic fairness framework called $\boldsymbolα$-$\boldsymbolβ$ Fair Machine Learning ($\boldsymbolα$-$\boldsymbolβ$ FML), designed to optimize fairness levels across sociodemographic attributes. Our framework employs a new family of surrogate loss functions, paired with loss reweighting techniques, allowing precise control over fairness-accuracy trade-offs through tunable hyperparameters $\boldsymbolα$ and $\boldsymbolβ$. To efficiently solve the learning objective, we propose Parallel Stochastic Gradient Descent with Surrogate Loss (P-SGD-S) and establish convergence guarantees for both convex and nonconvex loss functions. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework improves overall accuracy while reducing fairness violations, offering a smooth trade-off between standard empirical risk minimization and strict minimax fairness. Results across multiple datasets confirm its adaptability, ensuring fairness improvements without excessive performance degradation.

The quantum non-Markovianity for a special class of generalized Weyl channel

A quantum channel is usually represented as a sum of Kraus operators. The recent study [Phys. Rev. A 98, 032328 (2018)] has shown that applying a perturbation to the Kraus operators in qubit Pauli channels, the dynamical maps exhibit interesting properties, such as non-Markovianity, singularity. This has sparked our interest in studying the properties of other quantum channels. In this work, we study a special class of generalized Weyl channel where the Kraus operators are proportional to the Weyl diagonal matrices and the rest are vanishing. We use the Choi matrix of intermediate map to study quantum non-Markovianity. The crossover point of the eigenvalues of Choi matrix is a singularity of the decoherence rates in the canonical form of the master equation. Moreover, we identify the non-Markovianity based on the methods of CP divisibility and distinguishability. We also quantify the non-Markovianity in terms of the Hall-Cresser-Li-Andersson (HCLA) measure and the Breuer-Laine-Piilo (BLP) measure, respectively. In particular, we choose mutually unbiased bases as a pair of orthogonal initial states to quantify the non-Markovianity based on the BLP measure.

Linear-quadratic control for mean-field backward stochastic differential equations with random coefficients

In this paper, we study the linear-quadratic control problem for mean-field backward stochastic differential equations (MF-BSDE) with random coefficients. We first derive a preliminary stochastic maximum principle to analyze the unique solvability of the optimality system for this control problem through the variational method. Subsequently, we reformulate the mean-field linear-quadratic (MF-BSLQ) problem as a constrained BSDE control problem by imposing constraints on the expectation processes, which we solve using the Extended Lagrange multiplier method. Finally, we derive an explicit expression for the optimal control associated with Problem (MF-BSLQ).

Sum Rate Maximization in the Constant Envelope MIMO Downlink with the RZF Precoder

Feeding power amplifiers (PAs) with constant envelope (CE) signals is an effective way to reduce the power consumption in massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The nonlinear distortion caused by CE signaling must be mitigated by means of signal processing to improve the achievable sum rates. To this purpose, many linear and nonlinear precoding techniques have been developed for the CE MIMO downlink. The vast majority of these CE precoding techniques do not include a power allocation scheme, which is indispensable to achieve adequate performances in the downlink with channel gain imbalances between users. In this paper, we present two algorithms to produce a power allocation scheme for regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding in CE MIMO downlink. Both techniques are based on transforming the CE quantized MIMO downlink to an approximately equivalent system of parallel single-input-single-output (SISO) channels. The first technique is proven to solve the sum rate maximization problem in the approximate system optimally, whereas the second technique obtains the local maximum with lower complexity. We also extend another state-of-the-art quantization aware sum rate maximization algorithm with linear precoding to the CE downlink. Numerical results illustrate significant gains for the performance of the RZF precoder when the CE quantization is taken into account in a power allocation. Another key numerical result is that the proposed RZF techniques achieve almost the identical performance so that the one with lower computational complexity is chosen as the main method. Results also show that the proposed RZF precoding schemes perform at least as good as the state-of-the-art method with an advantage that the main RZF method has significantly lower computational complexity than the state-of-the-art.

Formation mechanisms and fluorescence properties of carbon dots in coal burning dust from coal fired power plants

Carbon dots (CDs) shows great application potential with their unique and excellent performances. Coal and its derivatives are rich in aromatic ring structure, which is suitable for preparing CDs in microstructure. Coal burning dust from coal-fired power plants can be utilized as a rich resource to separate and extract CDs. It has been shown in our results that there have two main possible mechanisms for the formation of CDs in coal burning dust. One is the self-assembly of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contained in coal or produced by incomplete combustion of coal. The other mechanism is that the bridge bonds linking different aromatic structures in coal are breaking which would form CDs with different functional groups when the coals are burning at high temperature. Under violet light excitation at 310-340 nm or red light at 610-640 nm, CDs extracted from coal burning dust can emit purple fluorescence around 410 nm. The mechanism of up-conversion fluorescence emission of CDs is due to a two-photon absorption process. The recycling of CDs from coal burning dust from coal-fired power plants are not only good to protect environment but also would be helpful for mass production of CDs.

Achieving Gaussian Vector Broadcast Channel Capacity with Scalar Lattices

A coding scheme with scalar lattices is applied to K-receiver, Gaussian, vector broadcast channels with K independent messages, one for each receiver. The method decomposes each receiver channel into parallel scalar channels with known interference and applies dirty paper coding with a modulo interval, amplitude shift keying (ASK), and probabilistic shaping to each scalar channel. The achievable rate tuples include all points inside the capacity region by choosing truncated Gaussian shaping, large ASK alphabets, and large modulo intervals.

Sensor Misalignment-tolerant AUV Navigation with Passive DoA and Doppler Measurements

We present a sensor misalignment-tolerant AUV navigation method that leverages measurements from an acoustic array and dead reckoned information. Recent studies have demonstrated the potential use of passive acoustic Direction of Arrival (DoA) measurements for AUV navigation without requiring ranging measurements. However, the sensor misalignment between the acoustic array and the attitude sensor was not accounted for. Such misalignment may deteriorate the navigation accuracy. This paper proposes a novel approach that allows simultaneous AUV navigation, beacon localization, and sensor alignment. An Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) that enables the necessary calculations to be completed at an affordable computational load is developed. A Nonlinear Least Squares (NLS)-based technique is employed to find an initial solution for beacon localization and sensor alignment as early as possible using a short-term window of measurements. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

User-Centric Cell-Free Wireless Networks for 6G: Communication Theoretic Models and Research Challenges

This paper presents a comprehensive communication theoretic model for the physical layer of a cell-free user-centric network, formed by user equipments (UEs), radio units (RUs), and decentralized units (DUs), uniformly spatially distributed over a given coverage area. We consider RUs equipped with multiple antennas, and focus on the regime where the UE, RU, and DU densities are constant and therefore the number of such nodes grows with the coverage area. A system is said scalable if the computing load and information rate at any node in the network converges to a constant as the network size (coverage area) grows to infinity. This imposes that each UE must be processed by a (user-centric) finite-size cluster of RUs, and that such cluster processors are dynamically allocated to the DUs (e.g., as software defined virtual network functions) in order to achieve a balanced computation load. We also assume that the RUs are connected to the DUs through a packet switching network, in order to achieve adaptive routing and load balance. For this model, we define in details the dynamic cluster formation and uplink pilot allocation. As a consequence of the pilot allocation and the scalability constraint, each cluster processor has a partial view of the network channel state information. We define the condition of ``ideal partial CSI'' when the channel vectors that can be estimated are perfectly known (while the ones that cannot be estimated are not know at all). We develop two attractive cluster-based linear receiver schemes for the uplink, and an uplink-downlink duality that allows to reuse such vectors as precoders for the downlink.

Thermodiffusively unstable laminar hydrogen flame in a sufficiently large 3D computational domain -- Part I: Characteristic patterns

Thermodiffusive instabilities can have a leading order effect on flame propagation for lean premixed hydrogen flames. Many simulation studies have been performed to study this effect, but almost exclusively in two-dimensional (2D) or domain sizes too small to support the characteristic large-scale features of the instability. The main purpose of this study is to quantify the differences of 3D and 2D flames using simulations on sufficiently large domains. To this end, direct numerical simulations (DNS) of thermodiffusively unstable laminar premixed hydrogen flames stabilized in 3D domains were performed. The effects of confinement on the flame dynamics are rigorously investigated by varying the domain size. The flame burning velocity shows a strong dependence on the domain size when the lateral domain width is less than 50 laminar flame thicknesses. The characteristic patterns of the thermodiffusively unstable flame are analyzed in detail, including the instantaneous flame structure, global burning velocity, flame surface area, stretch factor, curvature distribution, and the cell size. The effects of the computational setup (2D vs. 3D) on the local flame front curvature and the distributions of the thermo-chemical quantities are quantified through a conditional analysis. The formation and destruction mechanisms of the distinct cellular structures observed in the 3D domain are analyzed focusing on the interactions between the flame dynamics and the flow field, and the contributions of the production of flame surface density, kinematic restoration, and curvature dissipation are quantified. Compared with the corresponding 2D simulation, the flame surface area in the cut plane of the 3D configuration is similar, yet the burning velocity and the stretch factor are increased. The reason for this is the difference in curvature statistics in 2D and 3D.

Sensor Fusion and Resource Management in MIMO-OFDM Joint Sensing and Communication

This study explores the promising potential of integrating sensing capabilities into multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based networks through innovative multi-sensor fusion techniques, tracking algorithms, and resource management. A novel data fusion technique is proposed within the MIMO-OFDM system, which promotes cooperative sensing among monostatic joint sensing and communication (JSC) base stations by sharing range-angle maps with a central fusion center. To manage data sharing and control network overhead introduced by cooperation, an excision filter is introduced at each base station. After data fusion, the framework employs a three-step clustering procedure combined with a tracking algorithm to effectively handle point-like and extended targets. Delving into the sensing/communication trade-off, resources such as transmit power, frequency, and time are varied, providing valuable insights into their impact on the overall system performance. Additionally, a sophisticated channel model is proposed, accounting for complex urban propagation scenarios and addressing multipath effects and multiple reflection points for extended targets like vehicles. Evaluation metrics, including optimal sub-pattern assignment (OSPA), downlink sum rate, and bit rate, offer a comprehensive assessment of the system's localization and communication capabilities, as well as network overhead.

Witnessing quantum coherence with prior knowledge of observables

Quantum coherence is the key resource in quantum technologies including faster computing, secure communication and advanced sensing. Its quantification and detection are, therefore, paramount within the context of quantum information processing. Having certain priori knowledge on the observables may enhance the efficiency of coherence detection. In this work, we posit that the trace of the observables is a known quantity. Our investigation confirms that this assumption indeed extends the scope of coherence detection capabilities. Utilizing this prior knowledge of the trace of the observables, we establish a series of coherence detection criteria. We investigate the detection capabilities of these coherence criteria from diverse perspectives and ultimately ascertain the existence of four distinct and inequivalent criteria. These findings contribute to the deepening of our understanding of coherence detection methodologies, thereby potentially opening new avenues for advancements in quantum technologies.

Multi-Base Station Cooperative Sensing with AI-Aided Tracking

In this work, we investigate the performance of a joint sensing and communication (JSC) network consisting of multiple base stations (BSs) that cooperate through a fusion center (FC) to exchange information about the sensed environment while concurrently establishing communication links with a set of user equipments (UEs). Each BS within the network operates as a monostatic radar system, enabling comprehensive scanning of the monitored area and generating range-angle maps that provide information regarding the position of a group of heterogeneous objects. The acquired maps are subsequently fused in the FC. Then, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is employed to infer the category of the targets, e.g., pedestrians or vehicles, and such information is exploited by an adaptive clustering algorithm to group the detections originating from the same target more effectively. Finally, two multi-target tracking algorithms, the probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter and multi-Bernoulli mixture (MBM) filter, are applied to estimate the state of the targets. Numerical results demonstrated that our framework could provide remarkable sensing performance, achieving an optimal sub-pattern assignment (OSPA) less than 60 cm, while keeping communication services to UEs with a reduction of the communication capacity in the order of 10% to 20%. The impact of the number of BSs engaged in sensing is also examined, and we show that in the specific case study, 3 BSs ensure a localization error below 1 m.

Beyond the mixture of generalized Pauli dephasing channels

In recent times, there has been a growing scholarly focus on investigating the intricacies of quantum channel mixing. It has been commonly believed, based on intuition in the literature, that every generalized Pauli channel with dimensionality $d$ could be represented as a convex combination of $(d+1)$ generalized Pauli dephasing channels (see [Phys. Rev. A 103, 022605 (2021)] as a reference). To our surprise, our findings indicate the inaccuracy of this intuitive perspective. This has stimulated our interest in exploring the properties of convex combinations of generalized Pauli channels, beyond the restriction to just $(d+1)$ generalized Pauli dephasing channels. We demonstrate that many previously established properties still hold within this broader context. For instance, any mixture of invertible generalized Pauli channels retains its invertibility. It's worth noting that this property doesn't hold when considering the Weyl channels setting. Additionally, we demonstrate that every Pauli channel (for the case of $d=2$) can be represented as a mixture of $(d+1)$ Pauli dephasing channels, but this generalization doesn't apply to higher dimensions. This highlights a fundamental distinction between qubit and general qudit cases. In contrast to prior understanding, we show that non-invertibility of mixed channels is not a prerequisite for the resulting mapping to constitute a Markovian semigroup.

Nanotube ferroelectric tunnel junctions with giant tunneling electroresistance ratio

Low-dimensional ferroelectric tunnel junctions are appealing for the realization of nanoscale nonvolatile memory devices due to their inherent advantage of device miniaturization. Those based on current mechanisms still have restrictions including low tunneling electroresistance (TER) effects and complex heterostructures. Here, we introduce an entirely new TER mechanism to construct the nanotube ferroelectric tunnel junction with ferroelectric nanotubes as the tunneling region. When rolling a ferroelectric monolayer into a nanotube, due to the coexistence of its intrinsic ferroelectric polarization with the flexoelectric polarization induced by bending, there occurs metal-insulator transition depending on radiative polarization states. For the pristine monolayer, its out-of-plane polarization is tunable by an in-plane electric field, the conducting states of the ferroelectric nanotube can thus be tuned between metallic and insulating via axial electric means. Using α-In2Se3 as an example, our first-principles density functional theory calculations and nonequilibrium Green's function formalism confirm the feasibility of the TER mechanism and indicate an ultrahigh TER ratio exceeding 9.9*10^10% of the proposed nanotube ferroelectric tunnel junctions. Our findings provide a promising approach based on simple homogeneous structures for high density ferroelectric microelectronic devices with excellent ON/OFF performance.

Reconstruction-based LSTM-Autoencoder for Anomaly-based DDoS Attack Detection over Multivariate Time-Series Data

A Distributed Denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the regular traffic of a targeted server, service, or network by sending a flood of traffic to overwhelm the target or its surrounding infrastructure. As technology improves, new attacks have been developed by hackers. Traditional statistical and shallow machine learning techniques can detect superficial anomalies based on shallow data and feature selection, however, these approaches cannot detect unseen DDoS attacks. In this context, we propose a reconstruction-based anomaly detection model named LSTM-Autoencoder (LSTM-AE) which combines two deep learning-based models for detecting DDoS attack anomalies. The proposed structure of long short-term memory (LSTM) networks provides units that work with each other to learn the long short-term correlation of data within a time series sequence. Autoencoders are used to identify the optimal threshold based on the reconstruction error rates evaluated on each sample across all time-series sequences. As such, a combination model LSTM-AE can not only learn delicate sub-pattern differences in attacks and benign traffic flows, but also minimize reconstructed benign traffic to obtain a lower range reconstruction error, with attacks presenting a larger reconstruction error. In this research, we trained and evaluated our proposed LSTM-AE model on reflection-based DDoS attacks (DNS, LDAP, and SNMP). The results of our experiments demonstrate that our method performs better than other state-of-the-art methods, especially for LDAP attacks, with an accuracy of over 99.

Electronic properties of 2{\it H}-stacking bilayer MoS$_2$ measured by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy

Bilayer (BL) molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) is one of the most important electronic structures not only in valleytronics but also in realizing twistronic systems on the basis of the topological mosaics in Moiré superlattices. In this work, BL MoS$_2$ on sapphire substrate with 2$H$-stacking structure is fabricated. We apply the terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) for examining the basic optoelectronic properties of this kind of BL MoS$_2$. The optical conductivity of BL MoS$_2$ is obtained in temperature regime from 80 to 280 K. Through fitting the experimental data with the theoretical formula, the key sample parameters of BL MoS$_2$ can be determined, such as the electron density, the electronic relaxation time and the electronic localization factor. The temperature dependence of these parameters is examined and analyzed. We find that, similar to monolayer (ML) MoS$_2$, BL MoS$_2$ with 2$H$-stacking can respond strongly to THz radiation field and show semiconductor-like optoelectronic features. The theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) can help us to further understand why the THz optoelectronic properties of BL MoS$_2$ differ from those observed for ML MoS$_2$. The results obtained from this study indicate that the THz TDS can be applied suitably to study the optoelectronic properties of BL MoS$_2$ based twistronic systems for novel applications as optical and optoelectronic materials and devices.

Stochastic maximum principle for hybrid optimal control problems under partial observation

This paper is concerned with a partially observed hybrid optimal control problem, where continuous dynamics and discrete events coexist and in particular, the continuous dynamics can be observed while the discrete events, described by a Markov chain, is not directly available. Such kind of problem is first considered in the literature and has wide applications in finance, management, engineering, and so on. There are three major contributions made in this paper: First, we develop a novel non-linear filtering method to convert the partially observed problem into a completely observed one. Our method relies on some delicate stochastic analysis technique related to hybrid diffusions and is essentially different from the traditional filtering approaches. Second, we establish a new maximum principle based on the completely observed problem, whose two-dimensional state process consists of the continuous dynamics and the optimal filter. An important advantage of the maximum principle is that it takes a simple form and is convenient to implement. Finally, in order to illustrate the theoretical results, we solve a linear quadratic (LQ) example using the derived maximum principle to get some observable optimal controls.

Codes Correcting Burst and Arbitrary Erasures for Reliable and Low-Latency Communication

Motivated by modern network communication applications which require low latency, we study codes that correct erasures with low decoding delay. We provide a simple explicit construction that yields convolutional codes that can correct both burst and arbitrary erasures under a maximum decoding delay constraint $T$. Our proposed code has efficient encoding/decoding algorithms and requires a field size that is linear in $T$. We study the performance of our code over the Gilbert-Elliot channel; our simulation results show significant performance gains over low-delay codes existing in the literature.
