A discrete variational identity on semi-direct sums of Lie algebras

The discrete variational identity under general bilinear forms on semi-direct sums of Lie algebras is established. The constant $γ$ involved in the variational identity is determined through the corresponding solution to the stationary discrete zero curvature equation. An application of the resulting variational identity to a class of semi-direct sums of Lie algebras in the Volterra lattice case furnishes Hamiltonian structures for the associated integrable couplings of the Volterra lattice hierarchy.

Semi-direct sums of Lie algebras and discrete integrable couplings

A relation between semi-direct sums of Lie algebras and integrable couplings of lattice equations is established, and a practicable way to construct integrable couplings is further proposed. An application of the resulting general theory to the generalized Toda spectral problem yields two classes of integrable couplings for the generalized Toda hierarchy of lattice equations. The construction of integrable couplings using semi-direct sums of Lie algebras provides a good source of information on complete classification of integrable lattice equations.

Solving the Korteweg-de Vries Equation by Its Bilinear Form: Wronskian Solutions

A broad set of sufficient conditions consisting of systems of linear partial differential equations is presented which guarantees that the Wronskian determinant solves the Korteweg-de Vries equation in the bilinear form. A systematical analysis is made for solving the resultant linear systems of second-order and third-order partial differential equations, along with solution formulas for their representative systems. The key technique is to apply variation of parameters in solving the involved non-homogeneous partial differential equations. The obtained solution formulas provide us with a comprehensive approach to construct the existing solutions and many new solutions including rational solutions, solitons, positons, negatons, breathers, complexitons and interaction solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation.

Complexiton solutions to integrable equations

Complexiton solutions (or complexitons for short) are exact solutions newly introduced to integrable equations. Starting with the solution classification for a linear differential equation, the Korteweg-de Vries equation and the Toda lattice equation are considered as examples to exhibit complexiton structures of nonlinear integrable equations. The crucial step in the solution process is to apply the Wronskian and Casoratian techniques for Hirota's bilinear equations. Correspondence between complexitons of the Korteweg-de Vries equation and complexitons of the Toda lattice equation is provided.

Complexiton Solutions of the Toda Lattice Equation

A set of coupled conditions consisting of differential-difference equations is presented for Casorati determinants to solve the Toda lattice equation. One class of the resulting conditions leads to an approach for constructing complexiton solutions to the Toda lattice equation through the Casoratian formulation. An analysis is made for solving the resulting system of differential-difference equations, thereby providing the general solution yielding eigenfunctions required for forming complexitons. Moreover, a feasible way is presented to compute the required eigenfunctions, along with examples of real complexitons of lower order.

Wronskians, Generalized Wronskians and Solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries Equation

A bridge going from Wronskian solutions to generalized Wronskian solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation is built. It is then shown that generalized Wronskian solutions can be viewed as Wronskian solutions. The idea is used to generate positons, negatons and their interaction solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation. Moreover, general positons and negatons are constructed through the Wronskian formulation. A few new exact solutions to the KdV equation are explicitly presented as examples of Wronskian solutions.

Separable Hamiltonian equations on Riemann manifolds and related integrable hydrodynamic systems

A systematic construction of Stäckel systems in separated coordinates and its relation to bi-Hamiltonian formalism are considered. A general form of related hydrodynamic systems, integrable by the Hamilton-Jacobi method, is derived. One Casimir bi-Hamiltonian case is studed in details and in this case, a systematic construction of related hydrodynamic systems in arbitrary coordinates is presented, using a cofactor method and soliton symmetry constraints.

Higher Order Potential Expansion for the Continuous Limits of the Toda Hierarchy

A method for introducing the higher order terms in the potential expansion to study the continuous limits of the Toda hierarchy is proposed in this paper. The method ensures that the higher order terms are differential polynomials of the lower ones and can be continued to be performed indefinitly. By introducing the higher order terms, the fewer equations in the Toda hierarchy are needed in the so-called recombination method to recover the KdV hierarchy. It is shown that the Lax pairs, the Poisson tensors, and the Hamiltonians of the Toda hierarchy tend towards the corresponding ones of the KdV hierarchy in continuous limit.

The Theory of Binary Nonlinearization and Its Applications to Soliton Equations

Binary symmetry constraints are applied to the nonlinearization of spectral problems and adjoint spectral problems into so-called binary constrained flows, which provide candidates for finite-dimensional Liouville integrable Hamiltonian systems. The resulting constraints on the potentials of spectral problems give rise to a kind of involutive solutions to zero curvature equations, and thus the integrability by quadratures can be shown for zero curvature equations once the corresponding binary constrained flows are proved to be integrable. The whole process to carry out binary symmetry constraints is called binary nonlinearization. The principal task of binary nonlinearization is to expose the Liouville integrability for the resulting binary constrained flows, which can usually be achieved as a consequence of the existence of hereditary recursion operators. The theory of binary nonlinearization is applied to the multi-wave interaction equations associated with a 4x4 matrix spectral problem as an illustrative example. The Backlund transformations resulted from symmetry constraints are given for the multi-wave interaction equations, and thus a kind of involutive solutions is presented and the integrability by quadratures is shown for the multi-wave interaction equations.

A Bi-Hamiltonian Formulation for Triangular Systems by Perturbations

A bi-Hamiltonian formulation is proposed for triangular systems resulted by perturbations around solutions, from which infinitely many symmetries and conserved functionals of triangular systems can be explicitly constructed, provided that one operator of the Hamiltonian pair is invertible. Through our formulation, four examples of triangular systems are exhibited, which also show that bi-Hamiltonian systems in both lower dimensions and higher dimensions are many and varied. Two of four examples give local 2+1 dimensional bi-Hamiltonian systems and illustrate that multi-scale perturbations can lead to higher-dimensional bi-Hamiltonian systems.

Backlund Transformations of Soliton Systems from Symmetry Constraints

Binary symmetry constraints are applied to constructing Bäcklund transformations of soliton systems, both continuous and discrete. Construction of solutions to soliton systems is split into finding solutions to lower-dimensional Liouville integrable systems, which also paves a way for separation of variables and exhibits integrability by quadratures for soliton systems. Illustrative examples are provided for the KdV equation, the AKNS system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations, the Toda lattice, and the Langmuir lattice.

Binary Symmetry Constraints of N-wave Interaction Equations in 1+1 and 2+1 Dimensions

Binary symmetry constraints of the N-wave interaction equations in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions are proposed to reduce the N-wave interaction equations into finite-dimensional Liouville integrable systems. A new involutive and functionally independent system of polynomial functions is generated from an arbitrary order square matrix Lax operator and used to show the Liouville integrability of the constrained flows of the N-wave interaction equations. The constraints on the potentials resulting from the symmetry constraints give rise to involutive solutions to the N-wave interaction equations, and thus the integrability by quadratures are shown for the N-wave interaction equations by the constrained flows.

Binary Bargmann Symmetry Constraints of Soliton Equations

Binary Bargmann symmetry constraints are applied to decompose soliton equations into finite-dimensional Liouville integrable Hamiltonian systems, generated from so-called constrained flows. The resulting constraints on the potentials of soliton equations give rise to involutive solutions to soliton equations, and thus the integrability by quadratures are shown for soliton equations by the constrained flows. The multi-wave interaction equations associated with the $3\times 3$ matrix AKNS spectral problem are chosen as an illustrative example to carry out binary Bargmann symmetry constraints. The Lax representations and the corresponding ${\bf r}$-matrix formulation are established for the constrained flows of the multi-wave interaction equations, and the integrals of motion generated from the Lax representations are utilized to show the Liouville integrability for the resulting constrained flows. Finally, involutive solutions to the multi-wave interaction equations are presented.

Binary Constrained Flows and Separation of Variables for Soliton Equations

In contrast to mono-constrained flows with N degrees of freedom, binary constrained flows of soliton equations, admitting 2x2 Lax matrices, have 2N degrees of freedom. By means of the existing method, Lax matrices only yield the first N pairs of canonical separated variables. An approach for constructing the second N pairs of canonical separated variables with additional N separated equations is introduced. The Jacobi inversion problems for binary constrained flows are then established. Finally, the separability of binary constrained flows together with the factorization of soliton equations by the spatial and temporal binary constrained flows leads to the Jacobi inversion problems for soliton equations.

Finite-dimensional integrable systems associated with Davey-Stewartson I equation

For the Davey-Stewartson I equation, which is an integrable equation in 1+2 dimensions, we have already found its Lax pair in 1+1 dimensional form by nonlinear constraints. This paper deals with the second nonlinearization of this 1+1 dimensional system to get three 1+0 dimensional Hamiltonian systems with a constraint of Neumann type. The full set of involutive conserved integrals is obtained and their functional independence is proved. Therefore, the Hamiltonian systems are completely integrable in Liouville sense. A periodic solution of the Davey-Stewartson I equation is obtained by solving these classical Hamiltonian systems as an example.

Finite dimensional integrable Hamiltonian systems associated with DSI equation by Bargmann constraints

The Davey-Stewartson I equation is a typical integrable equation in 2+1 dimensions. Its Lax system being essentially in 1+1 dimensional form has been found through nonlinearization from 2+1 dimensions to 1+1 dimensions. In the present paper, this essentially 1+1 dimensional Lax system is further nonlinearized into 1+0 dimensional Hamiltonian systems by taking the Bargmann constraints. It is shown that the resulting 1+0 dimensional Hamiltonian systems are completely integrable in Liouville sense by finding a full set of integrals of motion and proving their functional independence.

Two binary Darboux transformations for the KdV hierarchy with self-consistent sources

Two binary (integral type) Darboux transformations for the KdV hierarchy with self-consistent sources are proposed. In contrast with the Darboux transformation for the KdV hierarchy, one of the two binary Darboux transformations provides non auto-Bäcklund transformation between two n-th KdV equations with self-consistent sources with different degrees. The formula for the m-times repeated binary Darboux transformations are presented. This enables us to construct the N-soliton solution for the KdV hierarchy with self-consistent sources.
