Functional methods for false vacuum decay in real time

We present the calculation of the Feynman path integral in real time for tunneling in quantum mechanics and field theory, including the first quantum corrections. For this purpose, we use the well-known fact that Euclidean saddle points in terms of real fields can be analytically continued to complex saddles of the action in Minkowski space. We also use Picard-Lefschetz theory in order to determine the middle-dimensional steepest-descent surface in the complex field space, constructed from Lefschetz thimbles, on which the path integral is to be performed. As an alternative to extracting the decay rate from the imaginary part of the ground-state energy of the false vacuum, we use the optical theorem in order to derive it from the real-time amplitude for forward scattering. While this amplitude may in principle be obtained by analytic continuation of its Euclidean counterpart, we work out in detail how it can be computed to one-loop order at the level of the path integral, i.e. evaluating the Gaußian integrals of fluctuations about the relevant complex saddle points. To that effect, we show how the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions on a thimble can be obtained by analytic continuation of the Euclidean eigensystem, and we determine the path-integral measure on thimbles. This way, using real-time methods, we recover the one-loop result by Callan and Coleman for the decay rate. We finally demonstrate our real-time methods explicitly, including the construction of the eigensystem of the complex saddle, on the archetypical example of tunneling in a quasi-degenerate quartic potential.

Correspondence between Thermal and Quantum Vacuum Transitions around Horizons

Recently, there are comparable revised interests in bubble nucleation seeded by black holes. However, it is debated in the literature that whether one shall interpret a static bounce solution in the Euclidean Schwarzschild spacetime (with periodic Euclidean Schwarzschild time) as describing a false vacuum decay at zero temperature or at finite temperature. In this paper, we show a correspondence that the static bounce solution describes either a thermal transition of vacuum in the static region outside of a Schwarzschild black hole or a quantum transition in a maximally extended Kruskal-Szekeres spacetime, corresponding to the viewpoint of the external static observers or the freely falling observers, respectively. The Matsubara modes in the thermal interpretation can be mapped to the circular harmonic modes from an $O(2)$ symmetry in the tunneling interpretation. The complementary tunneling interpretation must be given in the Kruskal-Szekeres spacetime because of the so-called thermofield dynamics. This correspondence is general for bubble nucleation around horizons. We propose a new paradox related to black holes as a consequence of this correspondence.

Radiative effects on false vacuum decay in Higgs-Yukawa theory

We derive fermionic Green's functions in the background of the Euclidean solitons describing false vacuum decay in a prototypal Higgs-Yukawa theory. In combination with appropriate counterterms for the masses, couplings and wave-function normalization, these can be used to calculate radiative corrections to the soliton solutions and transition rates that fully account for the inhomogeneous background provided by the nucleated bubble. We apply this approach to the archetypal example of transitions between the quasi-degenerate vacua of a massive scalar field with a quartic self-interaction. The effect of fermion loops is compared with those from additional scalar fields, and the loop effects accounting for the spacetime inhomogeneity of the tunneling configuration are compared with those where gradients are neglected. We find that scalar loops lead to an enhancement of the decay rate, whereas fermion loops lead to a suppression. These effects get relatively amplified by a perturbatively small factor when gradients are accounted for. In addition, we observe that the radiative corrections to the solitonic field profiles are smoother when the gradients are included. The method presented here for computing fermionic radiative corrections should be applicable beyond the archetypal example of vacuum decay. In particular, we work out methods that are suitable for calculations in the thin-wall limit, as well as others that take account of the full spherical symmetry of the solution. For the latter case, we construct the Green's functions based on spin hyperspherical harmonics, which are eigenfunctions of the appropriate angular momentum operators that commute with the Dirac operator in the solitonic background.

A cosmological model from emergence of space

Many studies have been carried out since T.Padmanabhan proposed that the cosmic acceleration can be understood from the perspective that spacetime dynamics is an emergent phenomenon. Motivated by such a new paradigm, we firstly study the de Sitter universe from emergence of space. After that we investigate the universes in general cases and then narrow down our discussions into one of them with a detailed discussion of the possibility in describing our real universe classically. Furthermore, a constraint on $Ht$ and a estimated value of $\tildeΩ_Λ$ (caused by $ρ_{vac}$) can be derived from our model, the comparison with experiments is also presented. The results show the validity of our model.

Mapping Hawking into Unruh for global embeddings

We study the mechanism of global embeddings into the Minkowski spacetime(GEMS) with the Hawking into Unruh mapping. We find a constraint that the extrinsic acceleration of the static observer in the Riemann space must satisfy for such embeddings. Thus the question raised by Paston in Ref.\cite{1}, that is, when does the Hawking into Unruh mapping for global embeddings work, is partly addressed. We also calculate the potential barrier of a scalar field to reach r $\rightarrow\infty$ in the ambient space. The results show that the potential barrier is finite, hence the static observer at r $\rightarrow\infty$ can indeed detect the radiation caused by the Unruh effect from the embedding view. However the potential barriers calculated in both the Riemann background and the Minkowski background are not coincident, therefore the GEMS approach is not complete and the Hawking effect can be distinguished from the Unruh effect of the GEMS in principle.

Generalized Holographic Equipartition for Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universes

The novel idea that spatial expansion of our universe can be regarded as the consequence of the emergence of space was proposed by Padmanabhan. By using of the basic law governing the emergence, which Padmanabhan called holographic equipartition, he also arrives at the Friedmann equation in a flat universe. When generalized to other gravity theories, the holographic equipartition need to be generalized with an expression of $f(ΔN,N_{sur})$. In this paper, we give general expressions of $f(ΔN,N_{sur})$ for generalized holographic equipartition which can be used to derive the Friedmann equations of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with any spatial curvature in higher (n+1)-dimensional Einstein gravity, Gauss-Bonnet gravity and more general Lovelock gravity. The results support the viability of the perspective of holographic equipartition.

Emergence of space and the general dynamic equation of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe

A novel idea that the cosmic acceleration can be understood from the perspective that spacetime dynamics is an emergent phenomena was proposed by T. Padmanabhan. The Friedmann equations of FRW universe can be derived from different gravity theories with different modifications of Padmanabhan's proposal. In this paper, a unified formula is proposed, in which those modifications can be treated as special cases when the formula is applied to different universe radii. Furthermore, the dynamic equations of FRW universe in the $ f(R) $ theory and deformed Ho{ř}ava-Lifshitz theory are investigated. The results show the validity of our proposed formula.
