Graph Learning for Spatiotemporal Signals with Long- and Short-Term Characterization

Mining natural associations from high-dimensional spatiotemporal signals plays an important role in various fields including biology, climatology, and financial analysis. However, most existing works have mainly studied time-independent signals without considering the correlations of spatiotemporal signals that achieve high learning accuracy. This paper aims to learn graphs that better reflect underlying data relations by leveraging the long- and short-term characteristics of spatiotemporal signals. First, a spatiotemporal signal model is presented that considers both spatial and temporal relations. In particular, we integrate a low-rank representation and a Gaussian Markov process to describe the temporal correlations. Then, the graph learning problem is formulated as a joint low-rank component estimation and graph Laplacian inference. Accordingly, we propose a low rank and spatiotemporal smoothness-based graph learning method (GL-LRSS), which introduces a spatiotemporal smoothness prior into time-vertex signal analysis. By jointly exploiting the low rank of long-time observations and the smoothness of short-time observations, the overall learning performance can be effectively improved. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate substantial improvements in the learning accuracy of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art low-rank component estimation and graph learning methods.

The reduction theorem for relatively maximal subgroups

Let $\mathfrak{X}$ be a class of finite groups closed under taking subgroups, homomorphic images and extensions. It is known that if $A$ is a normal subgroup of a finite group $G$ then the image of an $\mathfrak{X}$-maximal subgroup $H$ of $G$ in $G/A$ is not, in general, $\mathfrak{X}$-maximal in $G/A$. We say that the reduction $\mathfrak{X}$-theorem holds for a finite group $A$ if, for every finite group $G$ that is an extension of $A$ (i. e. contains $A$ as a normal subgroup), the number of conjugacy classes of $\mathfrak{X}$-maximal subgroups in $G$ and $G/A$ is the same. The reduction $\mathfrak{X}$-theorem for $A$ implies that $HA/A$ is $\mathfrak{X}$-maximal in $G/A$ for every extension $G$ of $A$ and every $\mathfrak{X}$-maximal subgroup $H$ of $G$. In this paper, we prove that the reduction $\mathfrak{X}$-theorem holds for $A$ if and only if all $\mathfrak{X}$-maximal subgroups are conjugate in $A$ and classify the finite groups with this property in terms of composition factors.

On a generalisation of finite $T$-groups

Let $σ=\{σ_i |i\in I\}$ is some partition of all primes $\mathbb{P}$ and $G$ a finite group. A subgroup $H$ of $G$ is said to be $σ$-subnormal in $G$ if there exists a subgroup chain $H=H_0\leq H_1\leq \cdots \leq H_n=G$ such that either $H_{i-1}$ is normal in $H_i$ or $H_i/(H_{i-1})_{H_i}$ is a finite $σ_j$-group for some $j \in I$ for $i = 1, \ldots, n$. We call a finite group $G$ a $T_σ$-group if every $σ$-subnormal subgroup is normal in $G$. In this paper, we analyse the structure of the $T_σ$-groups and give some characterisations of the $T_σ$-groups.

Parametric Sparse Bayesian Dictionary Learning for Multiple Sources Localization with Propagation Parameters Uncertainty and Nonuniform Noise

Received signal strength (RSS) based source localization method is popular due to its simplicity and low cost. However, this method is highly dependent on the propagation model which is not easy to be captured in practice. Moreover, most existing works only consider the single source and the identical measurement noise scenario, while in practice multiple co-channel sources may transmit simultaneously, and the measurement noise tends to be nonuniform. In this paper, we study the multiple co-channel sources localization (MSL) problem under unknown nonuniform noise, while jointly estimating the parametric propagation model. Specifically, we model the MSL problem as being parameterized by the unknown source locations and propagation parameters, and then reformulate it as a joint parametric sparsifying dictionary learning (PSDL) and sparse signal recovery (SSR) problem which is solved under the framework of sparse Bayesian learning with iterative parametric dictionary approximation. Furthermore, multiple snapshot measurements are utilized to improve the localization accuracy, and the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived to analyze the theoretical estimation error bound. Comparing with the state-of-the-art sparsity-based MSL algorithms as well as CRLB, extensive simulations show the importance of jointly inferring the propagation parameters, and highlight the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Spectra of Cayley graphs

Let $G$ be a group and $S\subseteq G$ its subset such that $S=S^{-1}$, where $S^{-1}=\{s^{-1}\mid s\in S\}$. Then {\it the Cayley graph ${\rm Cay}(G,S)$} is an undirected graph $Γ$ with the vertex set $V(Γ)=G$ and the edge set $E(Γ)=\{(g,gs)\mid g\in G, s\in S\}$. A graph $Γ$ is said to be {\it integral} if every eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $Γ$ is integer. In the paper, we prove the following theorem: {\it if a subset $S=S^{-1}$ of $G$ is normal and $s\in S\Rightarrow s^k\in S$ for every $k\in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $(k,|s|)=1$, then ${\rm Cay}(G,S)$ is integral.} In particular, {\it if $S\subseteq G$ is a normal set of involutions, then ${\rm Cay}(G,S)$ is integral.} We also use the theorem to prove that {\it if $G=A_n$ and $S=\{(12i)^{\pm1}\mid i=3,\dots,n\}$, then ${\rm Cay}(G,S)$ is integral.} Thus, we give positive solutions for both problems 19.50(a) and 19.50(b) in "Kourovka Notebook".

Finite groups with Frobenius normalizer condition for non-normal primary subgroups

A finite group $P$ is said to be \emph{primary} if $|P|=p^{a}$ for some prime $p$. We say a primary subgroup $P$ of a finite group $G$ satisfies the \emph{Frobenius normalizer condition} in $G$ if $N_{G}(P)/C_{G}(P)$ is a $p$-group provided $P$ is $p$-group. In this paper, we determine the structure of a finite group $G$ in which every non-subnormal primary subgroup satisfies the Frobenius normalized condition. In particular, we prove that if every non-normal primary subgroup of $G$ satisfies the Frobenius condition, then $G/F(G)$ is cyclic and every maximal non-normal nilpotent subgroup $U$ of $G$ with $F(G)U=G$ is a Carter subgroup of $G$.

On an open problem of Skiba

Let $σ=\{σ_{i}|i\in I\}$ be some partition of the set $\mathbb{P}$ of all primes, that is, $\mathbb{P}=\bigcup_{i\in I}σ_{i}$ and $σ_{i}\cap σ_{j}=\emptyset$ for all $i\neq j$. Let $G$ be a finite group. A set $\mathcal {H}$ of subgroups of $G$ is said to be a complete Hall $σ$-set of $G$ if every non-identity member of $\mathcal {H}$ is a Hall $σ_{i}$-subgroup of $G$ and $\mathcal {H}$ contains exactly one Hall $σ_{i}$-subgroup of $G$ for every $σ_{i}\in σ(G)$. $G$ is said to be a $σ$-group if it possesses a complete Hall $σ$-set. A $σ$-group $G$ is said to be $σ$-dispersive provided $G$ has a normal series $1 = G_1<G_2<\cdots< G_t< G_{t+1} = G$ and a complete Hall $σ$-set $\{H_{1}, H_{2}, \cdots, H_{t}\}$ such that $G_iH_i = G_{i+1}$ for all $i= 1,2,\ldots t$. In this paper, we give a characterizations of $σ$-dispersive group, which give a positive answer to an open problem of Skiba in the paper.

Number of Sylow subgroups in finite groups

Denote by $ν_p(G)$ the number of Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$. It is not difficult to see that $ν_p(H)\leqν_p(G)$ for $H\leq G$, however $ν_p(H)$ does not divide $ν_p(G)$ in general. In this paper we reduce the question whether $ν_p(H)$ divides $ν_p(G)$ for every $H\leq G$ to almost simple groups. This result substantially generalizes the previous result by G. Navarro and also provides an alternative proof for the Navarro theorem.

Classification and properties of the $π$-submaximal subgroups in minimal nonsolvable groups

Let $π$ be a set of primes. According to H. Wielandt, a subgroup $H$ of a finite group $X$ is called a $π$-submaximal subgroup if there is a monomorphism $ϕ:X\rightarrow Y$ into a finite group $Y$ such that $X^ϕ$ is subnormal in $Y$ and $H^ϕ=K\cap X^ϕ$ for a $π$-maximal subgroup $K$ of $Y$. In his talk at the well-known conference on finite groups in Santa-Cruz (USA) in 1979, Wielandt posed a series of open questions and among them the following problem: to describe the $π$-submaximal subgroup of the minimal nonsolvable groups and to study properties of such subgroups: the pronormality, the intravariancy, the conjugacy in the automorphism group etc. In the article, for every set $π$ of primes, we obtain a description of the $π$-submaximal subgroup in minimal nonsolvable groups and investigate their properties, so we give a solution of Wielandt's problem.

On $H_σ$-permutably embedded and $H_σ$-subnormaly embedded subgroups of finite groups

Let $G$ be a finite group. Let $σ=\{σ_{i} | i\in I\}$ be a partition of the set of all primes $\Bbb{P}$ and $n$ an integer. We write $σ(n) =\{σ_{i} |σ_{i}\cap π(n)\ne \emptyset \}$, $σ(G) =σ(|G|)$. A set $ {\cal H}$ of subgroups of $G$ is said to be a complete Hall $σ$-set of $G$ if every member of ${\cal H}\setminus \{1\}$ is a Hall $σ_{i}$-subgroup of $G$ for some $σ_{i}$ and ${\cal H}$ contains exact one Hall $σ_{i}$-subgroup of $G$ for every $σ_{i}\in σ(G)$. A subgroup $A$ of $G$ is called: (i) a $σ$-Hall subgroup of $G$ if $σ(|A|) \cap σ(|G:A|)=\emptyset$; (ii) $σ$-permutable in $G$ if $G$ possesses a complete Hall $σ$-set ${\cal H}$ such that $AH^{x}=H^{x}A$ for all $H\in {\cal H}$ and all $x\in G$. We say that a subgroup $A$ of $G$ is $H_σ$-permutably embedded in $G$ if $A$ is a $σ$-Hall subgroup of some $σ$-permutable subgroup of $G$. We study finite groups $G$ having an $H_σ$-permutably embedded subgroup of order $|A|$ for each subgroup $A$ of $G$. Some known results are generalized.

We study the structure of $G$ being based on the assumption that some subgroups of $G$ are $σ$-semipermutable in $G$.

Finite groups whose $n$-maximal subgroups are $σ$-subnormal

Let $σ=\{σ_{i} | i\in I\}$ be some partition of the set of all primes $\Bbb{P}$. A set ${\cal H}$ of subgroups of $G$ is said to be a \emph{complete Hall $σ$-set} of $G$ if every member $\ne 1$ of ${\cal H}$ is a Hall $σ_{i}$-subgroup of $G$, for some $i\in I$, and $\cal H$ contains exact one Hall $σ_{i}$-subgroup of $G$ for every $σ_{i}\in σ(G)$. A subgroup $H$ of $G$ is said to be: \emph{$σ$-permutable} or \emph{$σ$-quasinormal} in $G$ if $G$ possesses a complete Hall $σ$-set set ${\cal H}$ such that $HA^{x}=A^{x}H$ for all $A\in {\cal H}$ and $x\in G$: \emph{$σ$-subnormal} in $G$ if there is a subgroup chain $A=A_{0} \leq A_{1} \leq \cdots \leq A_{t}=G$ such that either $A_{i-1}\trianglelefteq A_{i}$ or $A_{i}/(A_{i-1})_{A_{i}}$ is a finite $σ_{i}$-group for some $σ_{i}\in σ$ for all $i=1, \ldots t$. If each $n$-maximal subgroup of $G$ is $σ$-subnormal ($σ$-quasinormal, respectively) in $G$ but, in the case $ n > 1$, some $(n-1)$-maximal subgroup is not $σ$-subnormal (not $σ$-quasinormal, respectively)) in $G$, we write $m_σ(G)=n$ ($m_{σq}(G)=n$, respectively). In this paper, we show that the parameters $m_σ(G)$ and $m_{σq}(G)$ make possible to bound the $σ$-nilpotent length $ \ l_σ(G)$ (see below the definitions of the terms employed), the rank $r(G)$ and the number $|π(G)|$ of all distinct primes dividing the order $|G|$ of a finite soluble group $G$. We also give conditions under which a finite group is $σ$-soluble or $σ$-nilpotent, and describe the structure of a finite soluble group $G$ in the case when $m_σ(G)=|π(G)|$. Some known results are generalized.

A subgroup $H$ of $G$ is called \emph{$Π$-quasinormal} or \emph{$Π$-permutable} in $G$ if $G$ possesses a complete Hall $Π$-set ${\cal H}=\{H_{1}, \ldots , H_{t} \}$ such that $AH_{i}^{x}=H_{i}^{x}A$ for any $i$ and all $x\in G$. We study the embedding properties of $H$ under the hypothesis that $H$ is $Π$-permutable in $G$. Some known results are generalized.

On supersolubility of finite groups admitting a Frobenius group of automorphisms with fixed-point-free kernel

Assume that a finite group $G$ admits a Frobenius group of automorphisms $FH$ with kernel $F$ and complement $H$ such that $C_{G}(F)=1$. In this paper, we investigate this situation and prove that if $C_G(H)$ is supersoluble and $C_{G'}(H)$ is nilpotent, then $G$ is supersoluble. Also, we show that $G$ is a Sylow tower group of a certain type if $C_{G}(H)$ is a Sylow tower group of the same type.

On finite groups with some primary subgroups satisfying partial $S$-$Π$-property

On partial $Π$-property of subgroups of finite groups

Let $H$ be a subgroup of a finite group $G$. We say that $H$ satisfies partial $Π$-property in $G$ if there exists a chief series $\mathitΓ_G:1=G_0<G_1<\cdots<G_n=G$ of $G$ such that for every $G$-chief factor $G_i/G_{i-1}$ ($1\leq i\leq n$) of $\mathitΓ_G$, $|G/G_{i-1}:N_{G/G_{i-1}}(HG_{i-1}/G_{i-1}\cap G_i/G_{i-1})|$ is a $π(HG_{i-1}/G_{i-1}\cap G_i/G_{i-1})$-number. Our main results are listed here: Theorem A. Let $\mathfrak{F}$ be a solubly saturated formation containing $\mathfrak{U}$ and $E$ a normal subgroup of $G$ with $G/E\in \mathfrak{F}$. Let $X\unlhd G$ such that $F_p^*(E)\leq X\leq E$. Suppose that for any Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ of $X$, every maximal subgroup of $P$ satisfies partial $Π$-property in $G$. Then one of the following holds: (1) $G\in \mathfrak{G}_{p'}\mathfrak{F}$. (2) $X/O_{p'}(X)$ is a quasisimple group with Sylow $p$-subgroups of order $p$. In particular, if $X=F_p^*(E)$, then $X/O_{p'}(X)$ is a simple group. Theorem B. Let $\mathfrak{F}$ be a solubly saturated formation containing $\mathfrak{U}$ and $E$ a normal subgroup of $G$ with $G/E\in \mathfrak{F}$. Suppose that for any Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ of $F_p^*(E)$, every cyclic subgroup of $P$ of prime order or order 4 (when $P$ is not quaternion-free) satisfies partial $Π$-property in $G$. Then $G\in \mathfrak{G}_{p'}\mathfrak{F}$.
