Multi-scale Imaging of Nuclear Deformation at the Electron Ion Collider

We show within the Color Glass Condensate framework that exclusive vector meson production at high energy is sensitive to the geometric deformation of the target nucleus at multiple length scales. Studying $e+$U collisions and varying the deformation of the uranium target, we demonstrate that larger deformations result in enhanced incoherent vector meson production cross sections. Further, different multipole deformation parameters affect different regions of transverse momentum transfer. Employing JIMWLK evolution to study the Bjorken-$x$ dependence of our results, we find that the ratio of incoherent to coherent cross sections decreases with decreasing $x$, largely independently of the quadrupole deformation of the target. Comparing results for the same process using ${\rm {^{20}Ne}}$ targets with ${\rm {^{16}O}}$ targets, we find that differences in deformation are clearly visible in the incoherent cross section. These findings show that certain observables at the Electron-Ion Collider are very sensitive to nuclear structure. Consequently, deformations need to be taken into account when interpreting experimental results. More importantly, this also means that $\vert t\vert$-differential diffractive vector meson production could become a powerful tool, enabling the most direct measurements of nuclear structure at different length scales, ranging from nuclear deformation at low $\vert t\vert$ to nucleon- and subnucleon-size scales at higher $\vert t\vert$.

Collectivity in Ultra-Peripheral Pb+Pb Collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

We present the first full (3+1)D dynamical simulations of ultra-peripheral Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Extrapolating from p+Pb collisions, we explore whether a quasi-real photon $γ^*$ interacting with the lead nucleus in an ultra-peripheral collision can create a many-body system exhibiting fluid behavior. Assuming strong final-state interactions, we provide model results for charged hadron multiplicity, identified particle mean transverse momenta, and charged hadron anisotropic flow coefficients, and compare them with experimental data from the ALICE and ATLAS collaborations. The elliptic flow hierarchy between p+Pb and $γ^*$+Pb collisions is dominated by the difference in longitudinal flow decorrelations and reproduces the experimental data well. We have demonstrated that our theoretical framework provides a quantitative tool to study particle production and collectivity for all system sizes, ranging from central heavy-ion collisions to small asymmetric collision systems at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider and even at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Collectivity in ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions

We present full (3+1)D dynamical simulations to study collective behavior in ultra-peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions (UPC) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with the 3DGlauber+MUSIC+UrQMD framework. By extrapolating from asymmetric p+Pb collisions, we simulate a quasi-real photon $γ^*$ interacting with the Pb nucleus in an ultra-peripheral collision at the LHC, assuming strong final-state effects. We study the elliptic flow hierarchy between p+Pb and $γ^*$+Pb collisions, which is dominated by the difference in longitudinal flow decorrelations. Our theoretical framework provides a quantitative tool to study collectivity in small asymmetric collision systems at current and future collider experiments.

Bayesian inference of the fluctuating proton shape in DIS and hadronic collisions

We determine the likelihood distribution for the model parameters describing the event-by-event fluctuating proton geometry at small $x$ by performing a Bayesian analysis within the Color Glass Condensate framework. The exclusive $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ production data from HERA is found to constrain the model parameters well, and we demonstrate that complementary constraints can be obtained from simulations of Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC.

From hydro to jet quenching, coalescence and hadron cascade: a coupled approach to solving the $R_{AA}\otimes v_2$ puzzle

Hydrodynamics and jet quenching are responsible for the elliptic flow $v_2$ and suppression of large transverse momentum ($p_T$) hadrons, respectively, two of the most important phenomena leading to the discovery of a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. A consistent description of the hadron suppression factor $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$, especially at intermediate $p_T$, however, remains a challenge. We solve this long-standing $R_{AA}\otimes v_2$ puzzle by including quark coalescence for hadronization and final state hadron cascade in the coupled linear Boltzmann transport-hydro model that combines concurrent jet transport and hydrodynamic evolution of the bulk medium. We illustrate that quark coalescence and hadron cascade, two keys to solving the puzzle, also lead to a splitting of $v_2$ for pions, kaons and protons in the intermediate $p_T$ region. We demonstrate for the first time that experimental data on $R_{AA}$, $v_2$ and their hadron flavor dependence from low to intermediate and high $p_T$ in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can be understood within this coupled framework.

Bayesian inference of the fluctuating proton shape

Using Bayesian inference, we determine probabilistic constraints on the parameters describing the fluctuating structure of protons at high energy. We employ the color glass condensate framework supplemented with a model for the spatial structure of the proton, along with experimental data from the ZEUS and H1 Collaborations on coherent and incoherent diffractive $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ production in e+p collisions at HERA. This data is found to constrain most model parameters well. This work sets the stage for future global analyses, including experimental data from e+p, p+p, and p+A collisions, to constrain the fluctuating structure of nucleons along with properties of the final state.

Evolution of $Λ$ polarization in the hadronic phase of heavy-ion collisions

Using the AMPT + MUSIC+UrQMD hybrid model, we study the global and local spin polarizations of $Λ$ hyperons as functions of the freeze-out temperature of the spin degree of freedom in the hadronic phase of Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=19.6$ GeV. Including contributions from both the thermal vorticity and thermal shear of the hadronic matter, we find that, with the spin freeze-out temperature dropping from the hadronization temperature of 160 MeV to 110 MeV at the kinetic freeze-out, both the global and local spin polarizations of $Λ$ hyperons due to the thermal vorticity decrease by a factor of two, while those due to the thermal shear decrease quickly and become negligibly small at 140 MeV. Our results suggest the importance of understanding the dynamical evolution of the spin degree of freedom in the hadronic stage in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Probing nuclear structure with mean transverse momentum in relativistic isobar collisions

Transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) generation in relativistic heavy ion collisions is sensitive to the initial geometry and the final-state bulk evolution. We demonstrate with hydrodynamic calculations that the mean $p_T$ ratio ($R_{\langle p_{T}\rangle}$) between the highly similar isobar $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr collisions is insensitive to the bulk evolution and remains sensitive to the small difference in the initial nuclear structure (neutron skin and deformation) between the Ru and Zr nuclei. We further find that nuclear deformation can produce an anticorrelation between $R_{\langle p_{T}\rangle}$ and eccentricity (or elliptic flow) in central collisions. These findings suggest that the $R_{\langle p_{T}\rangle}$ between the isobar systems can be used to measure the neutron skin thickness and deformation parameters, which can in turn constrain the nuclear symmetry energy slope parameter.

$U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ for Light Dark Matter, $g_μ-2$, the $511$ keV excess and the Hubble Tension

In this paper we introduce a light Dirac particle $ψ$ as thermal dark matter candidate in a $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ model. Together with the new gauge boson $X$, we find a possible parameter space with $m_X \simeq 20$ MeV, $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ coupling $g_X \simeq 5 \cdot 10^{-4}$ and $m_ψ\gtrsim m_X/2$ where the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly, dark matter, the Hubble tension, and (part of) the excess of $511$ keV photons from the region near the galactic center can be explained simultaneously. This model is safe from current experimental and astrophysical constraints, but can be probed by the next generation of neutrino experiments as well as low-energy $e^+e^-$ colliders.

Multiplicity Scaling of Light Nuclei Production in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

Using the nucleon coalescence model based on kinetic freeze-out nucleons from the 3D MUSIC+UrQMD and the 2D VISHNU hybrid model with a crossover equation of state, we study the multiplicity dependence of deuteron ($d$) and triton ($t$) production from central to peripheral Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=$ 7.7, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV and Pb+Pb at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=2.76$ TeV, respectively. It is found that the ratio $N_t N_p/N_d^2$ of the proton yield $N_p$, deuteron yield $N_d$ and triton yield $N_t$ exhibits a scaling behavior in its multiplicity dependence, i.e., decreasing monotonically with increasing charged-particle multiplicity. A similar multiplicity scaling of this ratio is also found in the nucleon coalescence calculation based on kinetic freeze-out nucleons from a multiphase transport (AMPT) model. The scaling behavior of $N_t N_p/N_d^2$ can be naturally explained by the interplay between the sizes of light nuclei and the nucleon emission source. We further argue that the multiplicity scaling of $N_t N_p/N_d^2$ can be used to validate the production mechanism of light nuclei, and the collision energy dependence of this yield ratio can further serve as a baseline in the search for the QCD critical point in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Sign-Agnostic Implicit Learning of Surface Self-Similarities for Shape Modeling and Reconstruction from Raw Point Clouds

Shape modeling and reconstruction from raw point clouds of objects stand as a fundamental challenge in vision and graphics research. Classical methods consider analytic shape priors; however, their performance degraded when the scanned points deviate from the ideal conditions of cleanness and completeness. Important progress has been recently made by data-driven approaches, which learn global and/or local models of implicit surface representations from auxiliary sets of training shapes. Motivated from a universal phenomenon that self-similar shape patterns of local surface patches repeat across the entire surface of an object, we aim to push forward the data-driven strategies and propose to learn a local implicit surface network for a shared, adaptive modeling of the entire surface for a direct surface reconstruction from raw point cloud; we also enhance the leveraging of surface self-similarities by improving correlations among the optimized latent codes of individual surface patches. Given that orientations of raw points could be unavailable or noisy, we extend sign agnostic learning into our local implicit model, which enables our recovery of signed implicit fields of local surfaces from the unsigned inputs. We term our framework as Sign-Agnostic Implicit Learning of Surface Self-Similarities (SAIL-S3). With a global post-optimization of local sign flipping, SAIL-S3 is able to directly model raw, un-oriented point clouds and reconstruct high-quality object surfaces. Experiments show its superiority over existing methods.

Investigations on mixed harmonic cumulants in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC

A series of new flow observables mixed harmonic multi-particle cumulants (MHC), which allow for the first time to quantify the correlations strength between different order of flow coefficients with various moments, was investigated using hydrodynamic model. These new observables are constructed based on multi-particle cumulants, and thus by design will be less sensitive to the non-flow contaminations. In addition to the previous study of correlation involving two flow coefficients with their second moments, both correlations of three flow coefficients and the correlations of higher order moments of $v_2$ and $v_3$ are systematically investigated using iEBE-VISHNU hybrid model with two different initial conditions, AMPT and TRENTo, respectively. These systematic studies using hydrodynamic models will significantly improve the understanding on the correlations between different orders (and moments) of flow coefficients. The hydrodynamic predictions shown in this paper and the future comparisons to experimental measurements will provide more constraints on theoretical models and extract more information about the transport properties of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions.

Beam Energy dependence of Light Nuclei Production in Au+Au Collisions

We study the collision energy dependence of (anti-)deuteron and (anti-)triton production in the most central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=$ 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV, using the nucleon coalescence model. The needed phase-space distribution of nucleons at the kinetic freeze-out is generated from a new 3D hybrid dynamical model (\texttt{iEBE-MUSIC}) by using a smooth crossover equation of state (EoS) without a QCD critical point. Our model calculations predict that the coalescence parameters of (anti-)deuteron ($B_2(d)$ and $B_2(\bar{d})$) decrease monotonically as the collision energy increases, and the light nuclei yield ratio $N_t N_p/N_d^2$ remains approximately a constant with respect to the collision energy. These calculated observables fail to reproduce the non-monotonic behavior of the corresponding data from the STAR Collaboration. Without including any effects of the critical point in our model, our results serve as the baseline predictions for the yields of light nuclei in the search for the possible QCD critical points from the experimental beam energy scan of heavy ion collisions.

Probing the partonic degrees of freedom in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV

We investigate the role of partonic degrees of freedom in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by studying the production and collective flow of identified hadrons at intermediate $p_T$ via the coalescence of soft and hard partons generated from viscous hydrodynamics (VISH2+1) and the energy loss model (LBT), respectively. We find that combining the intermediate $p_T$ hadrons from the coalescence with the low $p_T$ hadrons from hydrodynamics and high $p_T$ hadrons from the jet fragmentation, our Hydro-Coal-Frag model provides a nice description of the measured $p_T$-spectra and the differential elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ of pions, kaons and protons over the $p_T$ range from 0 to 6 GeV. We further demonstrate the necessity of including the quark coalescence contribution to reproduce the experimentally observed approximate number of constituent quark scaling of hadron $v_2$ at intermediate $p_T$. Our results thus indicate the importance of partonic degrees of freedom and also hint at the possible formation of quark-gluon plasma in high multiplicity p+Pb collisions at the LHC.

One fluid might not rule them all

In this proceeding, we present our recent investigations on hydrodynamic collectivity in high-multiplicity proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV using the VISHNU hybrid model with different initial condition models, called HIJING, super-MC and TRENTo. We find that with carefully tuned parameters, hydrodynamic simulations can give reasonable descriptions of the measured two-particle correlations. However, multi-particle single and mixed harmonics cumulants can not be described by hydrodynamics with these three initial conditions, even for the signs in a few cases. Further studies show that the non-linear response plays an important role in the hydrodynamic expansion of the p--p systems. Such an effect can change $c_2\{4\}$ from a negative value in the initial state to a positive value in the final state. The failure of the hydrodynamic description of multi-particle cumulant triggers the questions on whether the hydrodynamics can rule all collision systems, including p--p collisions at the LHC.

Number of constituent quark scaling of elliptic flows in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV

We briefly summarize our recent study on the number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling of hadron elliptic flows in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV. With the inclusion of hadron production via the quark coalescence model at intermediate $p_T$, the viscous hydrodynamics at low $p_T$, and jet fragmentation at high $p_T$, our $Hydro-Coal-Frag$ model provides a nice description of the $p_T$-spectra and differential elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ of pions, kaons and protons over the $p_T$ range from 0 to 6 GeV. Our results demonstrate that including the quark coalescence is essential for reproducing the observed approximate NCQ scaling of hadron $v_2$ at intermediate $p_T$ in experiments, indicating strongly the existence of partonic degrees of freedom and the formation of quark-gluon plasma in high multiplicity p--Pb collisions at the LHC.

Searching for small droplets of hydrodynamic fluid in proton--proton collisions at the LHC

In this paper, we investigate the hydrodynamic collectivity in high-multiplicity events of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV, using iEBE-VISHNU hybrid model with three different initial conditions, namely, HIJING, super-MC and TRENTo. With properly tuned parameters, hydrodynamic simulations with each initial model give reasonable descriptions of the measured two-particle correlations, including the integrated and $p_{\rm T}$-differential flow for all charged and identified hadrons. However, the hydrodynamic simulations fail to describe the negative value of the four-particle cumulant $c_2^v\{4\}$ as measured in experiments. Further investigations show that the non-linear response between the elliptic flow $v_2$ and the initial eccentricity $\varepsilon_2$ becomes significant in the small p-p systems. This leads to a large deviation from linear eccentricity scaling and generates additional flow fluctuations, which results in a positive $c_2^v\{4\}$ even with a negative $c_2^\varepsilon\{4\}$ from the initial state. We also presented the first hydrodynamic calculations of multi-particle mixed harmonic azimuthal correlations in p-p collisions, such as normalized asymmetric cumulant $nac_n\{3\}$, normalized Symmetric-Cumulant, $nsc_{2,3}\{4\}$ and $nsc_{2,4}\{4\}$. Although many qualitative features are reproduced by the hydrodynamic simulations with chosen parameters, the measured negative $nsc_{2,3}\{4\}$ cannot be reproduced. The failure of the description of negative $c_2\{4\}$ and $nsc_{2,3}\{4\}$ triggers the question on whether hydrodynamics with a fundamentally new initial state model could solve this puzzle, or hydrodynamics itself might not be the appreciated mechanism of the observed collectivity in p-p collisions at the LHC.

Principal Component Analysis of collective flow in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

In this paper, we implement Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to study the single particle distributions generated from thousands of {\tt VISH2+1} hydrodynamic simulations with an aim to explore if a machine could directly discover flow from the huge amount of data without explicit instructions from human-beings. We found that the obtained PCA eigenvectors are similar to but not identical with the traditional Fourier bases. Correspondingly, the PCA defined flow harmonics $v_n^\prime$ are also similar to the traditional $v_n$ for $n=2$ and 3, but largely deviated from the Fourier ones for $n\geq 4$. A further study on the symmetric cumulants and the Pearson coefficients indicates that mode-coupling effects are reduced for these flow harmonics defined by PCA.
