RestoreAgent: Autonomous Image Restoration Agent via Multimodal Large Language Models

Natural images captured by mobile devices often suffer from multiple types of degradation, such as noise, blur, and low light. Traditional image restoration methods require manual selection of specific tasks, algorithms, and execution sequences, which is time-consuming and may yield suboptimal results. All-in-one models, though capable of handling multiple tasks, typically support only a limited range and often produce overly smooth, low-fidelity outcomes due to their broad data distribution fitting. To address these challenges, we first define a new pipeline for restoring images with multiple degradations, and then introduce RestoreAgent, an intelligent image restoration system leveraging multimodal large language models. RestoreAgent autonomously assesses the type and extent of degradation in input images and performs restoration through (1) determining the appropriate restoration tasks, (2) optimizing the task sequence, (3) selecting the most suitable models, and (4) executing the restoration. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of RestoreAgent in handling complex degradation, surpassing human experts. Furthermore, the system modular design facilitates the fast integration of new tasks and models, enhancing its flexibility and scalability for various applications.

UltraPixel: Advancing Ultra-High-Resolution Image Synthesis to New Peaks

Ultra-high-resolution image generation poses great challenges, such as increased semantic planning complexity and detail synthesis difficulties, alongside substantial training resource demands. We present UltraPixel, a novel architecture utilizing cascade diffusion models to generate high-quality images at multiple resolutions (\textit{e.g.}, 1K to 6K) within a single model, while maintaining computational efficiency. UltraPixel leverages semantics-rich representations of lower-resolution images in the later denoising stage to guide the whole generation of highly detailed high-resolution images, significantly reducing complexity. Furthermore, we introduce implicit neural representations for continuous upsampling and scale-aware normalization layers adaptable to various resolutions. Notably, both low- and high-resolution processes are performed in the most compact space, sharing the majority of parameters with less than 3$\%$ additional parameters for high-resolution outputs, largely enhancing training and inference efficiency. Our model achieves fast training with reduced data requirements, producing photo-realistic high-resolution images and demonstrating state-of-the-art performance in extensive experiments.

ResMaster: Mastering High-Resolution Image Generation via Structural and Fine-Grained Guidance

Diffusion models excel at producing high-quality images; however, scaling to higher resolutions, such as 4K, often results in over-smoothed content, structural distortions, and repetitive patterns. To this end, we introduce ResMaster, a novel, training-free method that empowers resolution-limited diffusion models to generate high-quality images beyond resolution restrictions. Specifically, ResMaster leverages a low-resolution reference image created by a pre-trained diffusion model to provide structural and fine-grained guidance for crafting high-resolution images on a patch-by-patch basis. To ensure a coherent global structure, ResMaster meticulously aligns the low-frequency components of high-resolution patches with the low-resolution reference at each denoising step. For fine-grained guidance, tailored image prompts based on the low-resolution reference and enriched textual prompts produced by a vision-language model are incorporated. This approach could significantly mitigate local pattern distortions and improve detail refinement. Extensive experiments validate that ResMaster sets a new benchmark for high-resolution image generation and demonstrates promising efficiency. Dual Hyperspectral Mamba for Efficient Spectral Compressive Imaging

Deep unfolding methods have made impressive progress in restoring 3D hyperspectral images (HSIs) from 2D measurements through convolution neural networks or Transformers in spectral compressive imaging. However, they cannot efficiently capture long-range dependencies using global receptive fields, which significantly limits their performance in HSI reconstruction. Moreover, these methods may suffer from local context neglect if we directly utilize Mamba to unfold a 2D feature map as a 1D sequence for modeling global long-range dependencies. To address these challenges, we propose a novel Dual Hyperspectral Mamba (DHM) to explore both global long-range dependencies and local contexts for efficient HSI reconstruction. After learning informative parameters to estimate degradation patterns of the CASSI system, we use them to scale the linear projection and offer noise level for the denoiser (i.e., our proposed DHM). Specifically, our DHM consists of multiple dual hyperspectral S4 blocks (DHSBs) to restore original HSIs. Particularly, each DHSB contains a global hyperspectral S4 block (GHSB) to model long-range dependencies across the entire high-resolution HSIs using global receptive fields, and a local hyperspectral S4 block (LHSB) to address local context neglect by establishing structured state-space sequence (S4) models within local windows. Experiments verify the benefits of our DHM for HSI reconstruction. The source codes and models will be available at https://github.com/JiahuaDong/DHM.

A Survey on Multi-modal Machine Translation: Tasks, Methods and Challenges

In recent years, multi-modal machine translation has attracted significant interest in both academia and industry due to its superior performance. It takes both textual and visual modalities as inputs, leveraging visual context to tackle the ambiguities in source texts. In this paper, we begin by offering an exhaustive overview of 99 prior works, comprehensively summarizing representative studies from the perspectives of dominant models, datasets, and evaluation metrics. Afterwards, we analyze the impact of various factors on model performance and finally discuss the possible research directions for this task in the future. Over time, multi-modal machine translation has developed more types to meet diverse needs. Unlike previous surveys confined to the early stage of multi-modal machine translation, our survey thoroughly concludes these emerging types from different aspects, so as to provide researchers with a better understanding of its current state.

Efficient Real-world Image Super-Resolution Via Adaptive Directional Gradient Convolution

Real-SR endeavors to produce high-resolution images with rich details while mitigating the impact of multiple degradation factors. Although existing methods have achieved impressive achievements in detail recovery, they still fall short when addressing regions with complex gradient arrangements due to the intensity-based linear weighting feature extraction manner. Moreover, the stochastic artifacts introduced by degradation cues during the imaging process in real LR increase the disorder of the overall image details, further complicating the perception of intrinsic gradient arrangement. To address these challenges, we innovatively introduce kernel-wise differential operations within the convolutional kernel and develop several learnable directional gradient convolutions. These convolutions are integrated in parallel with a novel linear weighting mechanism to form an Adaptive Directional Gradient Convolution (DGConv), which adaptively weights and fuses the basic directional gradients to improve the gradient arrangement perception capability for both regular and irregular textures. Coupled with DGConv, we further devise a novel equivalent parameter fusion method for DGConv that maintains its rich representational capabilities while keeping computational costs consistent with a single Vanilla Convolution (VConv), enabling DGConv to improve the performance of existing super-resolution networks without incurring additional computational expenses. To better leverage the superiority of DGConv, we further develop an Adaptive Information Interaction Block (AIIBlock) to adeptly balance the enhancement of texture and contrast while meticulously investigating the interdependencies, culminating in the creation of a DGPNet for Real-SR through simple stacking. Comparative results with 15 SOTA methods across three public datasets underscore the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed approach.

On testing mean of high dimensional compositional data

We investigate one/two-sample mean tests for high-dimensional compositional data when the number of variables is comparable with the sample size, as commonly encountered in microbiome research. Existing methods mainly focus on max-type test statistics which are suitable for detecting sparse signals. However, in this paper, we introduce a novel approach using sum-type test statistics which are capable of detecting weak but dense signals. By establishing the asymptotic independence between the max-type and sum-type test statistics, we further propose a combined max-sum type test to cover both cases. We derived the asymptotic null distributions and power functions for these test statistics. Simulation studies demonstrate the superiority of our max-sum type test statistics which exhibit robust performance regardless of data sparsity.

Low-Res Leads the Way: Improving Generalization for Super-Resolution by Self-Supervised Learning

For image super-resolution (SR), bridging the gap between the performance on synthetic datasets and real-world degradation scenarios remains a challenge. This work introduces a novel "Low-Res Leads the Way" (LWay) training framework, merging Supervised Pre-training with Self-supervised Learning to enhance the adaptability of SR models to real-world images. Our approach utilizes a low-resolution (LR) reconstruction network to extract degradation embeddings from LR images, merging them with super-resolved outputs for LR reconstruction. Leveraging unseen LR images for self-supervised learning guides the model to adapt its modeling space to the target domain, facilitating fine-tuning of SR models without requiring paired high-resolution (HR) images. The integration of Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) further refines the focus on high-frequency details. Extensive evaluations show that our method significantly improves the generalization and detail restoration capabilities of SR models on unseen real-world datasets, outperforming existing methods. Our training regime is universally compatible, requiring no network architecture modifications, making it a practical solution for real-world SR applications.

CoSeR: Bridging Image and Language for Cognitive Super-Resolution

Existing super-resolution (SR) models primarily focus on restoring local texture details, often neglecting the global semantic information within the scene. This oversight can lead to the omission of crucial semantic details or the introduction of inaccurate textures during the recovery process. In our work, we introduce the Cognitive Super-Resolution (CoSeR) framework, empowering SR models with the capacity to comprehend low-resolution images. We achieve this by marrying image appearance and language understanding to generate a cognitive embedding, which not only activates prior information from large text-to-image diffusion models but also facilitates the generation of high-quality reference images to optimize the SR process. To further improve image fidelity, we propose a novel condition injection scheme called "All-in-Attention", consolidating all conditional information into a single module. Consequently, our method successfully restores semantically correct and photorealistic details, demonstrating state-of-the-art performance across multiple benchmarks. From NeRFLiX to NeRFLiX++: A General NeRF-Agnostic Restorer Paradigm

Neural radiance fields (NeRF) have shown great success in novel view synthesis. However, recovering high-quality details from real-world scenes is still challenging for the existing NeRF-based approaches, due to the potential imperfect calibration information and scene representation inaccuracy. Even with high-quality training frames, the synthetic novel views produced by NeRF models still suffer from notable rendering artifacts, such as noise and blur. To address this, we propose NeRFLiX, a general NeRF-agnostic restorer paradigm that learns a degradation-driven inter-viewpoint mixer. Specially, we design a NeRF-style degradation modeling approach and construct large-scale training data, enabling the possibility of effectively removing NeRF-native rendering artifacts for deep neural networks. Moreover, beyond the degradation removal, we propose an inter-viewpoint aggregation framework that fuses highly related high-quality training images, pushing the performance of cutting-edge NeRF models to entirely new levels and producing highly photo-realistic synthetic views. Based on this paradigm, we further present NeRFLiX++ with a stronger two-stage NeRF degradation simulator and a faster inter-viewpoint mixer, achieving superior performance with significantly improved computational efficiency. Notably, NeRFLiX++ is capable of restoring photo-realistic ultra-high-resolution outputs from noisy low-resolution NeRF-rendered views. Extensive experiments demonstrate the excellent restoration ability of NeRFLiX++ on various novel view synthesis benchmarks.

Optimal binary gratings for multi-wavelength magneto-optical traps

Grating magneto-optical traps are an enabling quantum technology for portable metrological devices with ultracold atoms. However, beam diffraction efficiency and angle are affected by wavelength, creating a single-optic design challenge for laser cooling in two stages at two distinct wavelengths - as commonly used for loading e.g. Sr or Yb atoms into optical lattice or tweezer clocks. Here, we optically characterize a wide variety of binary gratings at different wavelengths to find a simple empirical fit to experimental grating diffraction efficiency data in terms of dimensionless etch depth and period for various duty cycles. The model avoids complex 3D light-grating surface calculations, yet still yields results accurate to a few percent across a broad range of parameters. Gratings optimized for two (or more) wavelengths can now be designed in an informed manner suitable for a wide class of atomic species enabling advanced quantum technologies.

On the nontrivial extremal eigenvalues of graphs

We present a finer quantitative version of an observation due to Breuillard, Green, Guralnick and Tao which tells that for finite non-bipartite Cayley graphs, once the nontrivial eigenvalues of their normalized adjacency matrices are uniformly bounded away from $1$, then they are also uniformly bounded away from $-1$. Unlike previous works which depend heavily on combinatorial arguments, we rely more on analysis of eigenfunctions. We establish a new explicit lower bound for the gap between $-1$ and the smallest normalized adjacency eigenvalue, which improves previous lower bounds in terms of edge-expansion, and is comparable to the best known lower bound in terms of vertex-expansion.

An Improved Quantum Private Set Intersection Protocol Based on Hadamard Gates

Recently, Liu and Yin (Int. J. Theor. Phys. 60, 2074-2083 (2021)) proposed a two-party private set intersection protocol based on quantum Fourier transform. We find the participant can deduce the other party's private information, which violates the security requirement of private set computation. In order to solve this problem, an improved private set intersection protocol based on Hadamard gate is proposed. Firstly, the more feasible Hadamard gates are used to perform on the original n qubits instead of the quantum Fourier transform, which may reduce the difficulty of implementation. In addition, through the exclusive OR calculation, the participant's private information is randomly chosen and encoded on the additional n qubits, which prevents participants from obtaining the result of the difference set S-diff , and then avoids the internal leakage of private information. Finally, the correctness and security analysis are conducted to show the proposed protocol can guarantee the correctness of computation result as well as resist outside attacks and participant internal attacks.

Can ChatGPT Replace Traditional KBQA Models? An In-depth Analysis of the Question Answering Performance of the GPT LLM Family

ChatGPT is a powerful large language model (LLM) that covers knowledge resources such as Wikipedia and supports natural language question answering using its own knowledge. Therefore, there is growing interest in exploring whether ChatGPT can replace traditional knowledge-based question answering (KBQA) models. Although there have been some works analyzing the question answering performance of ChatGPT, there is still a lack of large-scale, comprehensive testing of various types of complex questions to analyze the limitations of the model. In this paper, we present a framework that follows the black-box testing specifications of CheckList proposed by Ribeiro et. al. We evaluate ChatGPT and its family of LLMs on eight real-world KB-based complex question answering datasets, which include six English datasets and two multilingual datasets. The total number of test cases is approximately 190,000. In addition to the GPT family of LLMs, we also evaluate the well-known FLAN-T5 to identify commonalities between the GPT family and other LLMs. The dataset and code are available at https://github.com/tan92hl/Complex-Question-Answering-Evaluation-of-GPT-family.git

Texture Generation on 3D Meshes with Point-UV Diffusion

In this work, we focus on synthesizing high-quality textures on 3D meshes. We present Point-UV diffusion, a coarse-to-fine pipeline that marries the denoising diffusion model with UV mapping to generate 3D consistent and high-quality texture images in UV space. We start with introducing a point diffusion model to synthesize low-frequency texture components with our tailored style guidance to tackle the biased color distribution. The derived coarse texture offers global consistency and serves as a condition for the subsequent UV diffusion stage, aiding in regularizing the model to generate a 3D consistent UV texture image. Then, a UV diffusion model with hybrid conditions is developed to enhance the texture fidelity in the 2D UV space. Our method can process meshes of any genus, generating diversified, geometry-compatible, and high-fidelity textures. Code is available at https://cvmi-lab.github.io/Point-UV-Diffusion

Quasi-linear fractional-order operators in Lipschitz domains

We prove Besov boundary regularity for solutions of the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for fractional-order quasi-linear operators with variable coefficients on Lipschitz domains $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Our estimates are consistent with the boundary behavior of solutions on smooth domains and apply to fractional $p$-Laplacians and operators with finite horizon. The proof exploits the underlying variational structure and uses a new and flexible local translation operator. We further apply these regularity estimates to derive novel error estimates for finite element approximations of fractional $p$-Laplacians and present several simulations that reveal the boundary behavior of solutions.
