Floquet Isospectrality of the Zero Potential for Discrete Periodic Schrödinger Operators

Let $Γ=q_1\mathbb{Z}\oplus q_2 \mathbb{Z}\oplus\cdots\oplus q_d\mathbb{Z}$, with $q_j\in (\mathbb{Z}^+)^d$ for each $j\in \{1,\ldots,d\}$, and denote by $Δ$ the discrete Laplacian on $\ell^2\left( \mathbb{Z}^d\right)$. Using Macaulay2, we first numerically find complex-valued $Γ$-periodic potentials $V:\mathbb{Z}^d\to \mathbb{C}$ such that the operators $Δ+V$ and $Δ$ are Floquet isospectral. We then use combinatorial methods to validate these numerical solutions.

Algebraic Properties of the Fermi Variety for Periodic Graph Operators

We present a method to estimate the number of irreducible components of the Fermi varieties of periodic Schrödinger operators on graphs in terms of suitable asymptotics. Our main theorem is an abstract bound for the number of irreducible components of Laurent polynomials in terms of such asymptotics. We then show how the abstract bound implies irreducibility in many lattices of interest, including examples with more than one vertex in the fundamental cell such as the Lieb lattice as well as certain models obtained by the process of graph decoration.

Floquet isospectrality for periodic graph operators

Let $Γ=q_1\mathbb{Z}\oplus q_2 \mathbb{Z}\oplus\cdots\oplus q_d\mathbb{Z}$ with arbitrary positive integers $q_l$, $l=1,2,\cdots,d$. Let $Δ_{\rm discrete}+V$ be the discrete Schrödinger operator on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, where $Δ_{\rm discrete}$ is the discrete Laplacian on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and the function $V:\mathbb{Z}^d\to \mathbb{C}$ is $Γ$-periodic. We prove two rigidity theorems for discrete periodic Schrödinger operators: (1) If real-valued $Γ$-periodic functions $V$ and $Y$ satisfy $Δ_{\rm discrete}+V$ and $Δ_{\rm discrete}+Y$ are Floquet isospectral and $Y$ is separable, then $V$ is separable. (2) If complex-valued $Γ$-periodic functions $V$ and $Y$ satisfy $Δ_{\rm discrete}+V$ and $Δ_{\rm discrete}+Y$ are Floquet isospectral, and both $V=\bigoplus_{j=1}^rV_j$ and $Y=\bigoplus_{j=1}^r Y_j$ are separable functions, then, up to a constant, lower dimensional decompositions $V_j$ and $Y_j$ are Floquet isospectral, $j=1,2,\cdots,r$. Our theorems extend the results of Kappeler. Our approach is developed from the author's recent work on Fermi isospectrality and can be applied to study more general lattices.

Bloch varieties and quantum ergodicity for periodic graph operators

For periodic graph operators, we establish criteria to determine the overlaps of spectral band functions based on Bloch varieties. One criterion states that for a large family of periodic graph operators, the irreducibility of Bloch varieties implies no non-trivial periods for spectral band functions. This particularly shows that spectral band functions of discrete periodic Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ have no non-trivial periods, answering a question asked by Mckenzie and Sabri [Quantum ergodicity for periodic graphs. arXiv preprint arXiv:2208.12685 (2022)].

Fermi isospectrality of discrete periodic Schrödinger operators with separable potentials on $\mathbb{Z}^2$

Let $Γ=q_1\mathbb{Z}\oplus q_2 \mathbb{Z} $ with $q_1\in \mathbb{Z}_+$ and $q_2\in\mathbb{Z}_+$. Let $Δ+X$ be the discrete periodic Schrödinger operator on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, where $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian and $X:\mathbb{Z}^2\to \mathbb{C}$ is $Γ$-periodic. In this paper, we develop tools from complex analysis to study the isospectrality of discrete periodic Schrödinger operators. We prove that if two $Γ$-periodic potentials $X$ and $Y$ are Fermi isospectral and both $X=X_1\oplus X_2$ and $Y= Y_1\oplus Y_2$ are separable functions, then, up to a constant, one dimensional potentials $X_j$ and $Y_j$ are Floquet isospectral, $j=1,2$. This allows us to prove that for any non-constant separable real-valued $Γ$-periodic potential, the Fermi variety $F_λ(V)/\mathbb{Z}^2$ is irreducible for any $λ\in \mathbb{C}$, which partially confirms a conjecture of Gieseker, Knörrer and Trubowitz in the early 1990s.

Distributions of resonances of supercritical quasi-periodic operators

We discover that the distribution of (frequency and phase) resonances plays a role in determining the spectral type of supercritical quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators. In particular, we disprove the second spectral transition line conjecture of Jitomirskaya in the early 1990s.

Irreducibility of the Bloch Variety for Finite-Range Schrödinger Operators

We study the Bloch variety of discrete Schrödinger operators associated with a complex periodic potential and a general finite-range interaction, showing that the Bloch variety is irreducible for a wide class of lattice geometries in arbitrary dimension. Examples include the triangular lattice and the extended Harper lattice.

Fermi isospectrality for discrete periodic Schrodinger operators

Let $Γ=q_1\mathbb{Z}\oplus q_2 \mathbb{Z}\oplus\cdots\oplus q_d\mathbb{Z}$, where $q_l\in \mathbb{Z}_+$, $l=1,2,\cdots,d$. Let $Δ+V$ be the discrete Schrödinger operator, where $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and the potential $V:\mathbb{Z}^d\to \mathbb{R}$ is $Γ$-periodic. We prove three rigidity theorems for discrete periodic Schrödinger operators in any dimension $d\geq 3$: (1) if at some energy level, Fermi varieties of the $Γ$-periodic potential $V$ and the $Γ$-periodic potential $Y$ are the same (this feature is referred to as {\it Fermi isospectrality} of $V$ and $Y$), and $Y $ is a separable function, then $V$ is separable; (2) if potentials $V$ and $Y$ are Fermi isospectral and both $V=\bigoplus_{j=1}^rV_j$ and $Y=\bigoplus_{j=1}^r Y_j$ are separable functions, then, up to a constant, lower dimensional decompositions $V_j$ and $Y_j$ are Floquet isospectral, $j=1,2,\cdots,r$; (3) if a potential $V$ and the zero potential are Fermi isospectral, then $V$ is zero. In particular, all conclusions in (1), (2) and (3) hold if we replace the assumption "Fermi isospectrality" with a stronger assumption "Floquet isospectrality".

Small denominators and large numerators of quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators

We initiate an approach to simultaneously treat numerators and denominators of Green's functions arising from quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators, which in particular allows us to study completely resonant phases of the almost Mathieu operator. Let $ (H_{λ,α,θ}u) (n)=u(n+1)+u(n-1)+ 2λ\cos2π(θ+nα)u(n)$ be the almost Mathieu operator on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})$, where $λ, α, θ\in \mathbb{R}$. Let $$ β(α)=\limsup_{k\rightarrow \infty}-\frac{\ln ||kα||_{\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}}}{|k|}.$$ We prove that for any $θ$ with $2θ\in α\mathbb{Z}+\mathbb{Z}$, $H_{λ,α,θ}$ satisfies Anderson localization if $|λ|>e^{2β(α)}$. This confirms a conjecture of Avila and Jitomirskaya [The Ten Martini Problem. Ann. of Math. (2) 170 (2009), no. 1, 303--342] and a particular case of a conjecture of Jitomirskaya [Almost everything about the almost Mathieu operator. II. XIth International Congress of Mathematical Physics (Paris, 1994), 373--382, Int. Press, Cambridge, MA, 1995].

Nonlinear Anderson localized states at arbitrary disorder

It is classical, following Furstenberg's theorem on positive Lyapunov exponent for products of random SL$(2, \mathbb R)$ matrices, that the one dimensional random Schrödinger operator has Anderson localization at arbitrary disorder. This paper proves a nonlinear analogue, thereby establishing a KAM-type persistence result for a non-integrable system.

Irreducibility of the Fermi variety for discrete periodic Schrödinger operators and embedded eigenvalues

Let $H_0$ be a discrete periodic Schrödinger operator on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d)$: $$H_0=-Δ+V,$$ where $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian and $V: \mathbb{Z}^d\to \mathbb{C}$ is periodic. We prove that for any $d\geq3$, the Fermi variety at every energy level is irreducible (modulo periodicity). For $d=2$, we prove that the Fermi variety at every energy level except for the average of the potential is irreducible (modulo periodicity) and the Fermi variety at the average of the potential has at most two irreducible components (modulo periodicity). This is sharp since for $d=2$ and a constant potential $V$, the Fermi variety at $V$-level has exactly two irreducible components (modulo periodicity). We also prove that the Bloch variety is irreducible (modulo periodicity) for any $d\geq 2$. As applications, we prove that when $V$ is a real-valued periodic function, the level set of any extrema of any spectral band functions, spectral band edges in particular, has dimension at most $d-2$ for any $d\geq 3$, and finite cardinality for $d=2$. We also show that $H=-Δ+V+v$ does not have any embedded eigenvalues provided that $v$ decays super-exponentially.

Revisiting the Christ-Kiselev's multi-linear operator technique and its applications to Schrödinger operators

We established a generalized version of the Christ-Kiselev's multi-linear operator technique to deal with the spectral theory of Schrödinger operators. As applications, several spectral results of perturbed periodic Schrödinger operators are obtained, including WKB solutions, sharp transitions of preservation of absolutely continuous spectra, criteria of absence of singular spectra and sharp bounds of the Hausdorff dimension of singular spectra.

Quantitative inductive estimates for Green's functions of non-self-adjoint matrices

We provide quantitative inductive estimates for Green's functions of matrices with (sub)expoentially decaying off diagonal entries in higher dimensions. Together with Cartan's estimates and discrepancy estimates, we establish explicit bounds for the large deviation theorem for non-self-adjoint Toeplitz operators. As applications, we obtain the modulus of continuity of the integrated density of states with explicit bounds and the pure point spectrum property for analytic quasi-periodic operators. Moreover, our inductions are self-improved and work for perturbations with low complexity interactions.

Inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation in the coprime setting

Given $n\in N$ and $x,γ\in R$, let \begin{equation*} ||γ-nx||^\prime=\min\{|γ-nx+m|:m\in Z, \gcd (n,m)=1\}, \end{equation*} %where $(n,m)$ is the largest common divisor of $n$ and $m$. Two conjectures in the coprime inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation state that for any irrational number $α$ and almost every $γ\in R$, \begin{equation*} \liminf_{n\to \infty}n||γ-nα||^{\prime}=0 \end{equation*} and that there exists $C>0$, such that for all $α\in R\backslash Q$ and $γ\in [0,1)$ , \begin{equation*} \liminf_{n\to \infty}n||γ-nα||^{\prime} < C. \end{equation*} We prove the first conjecture and disprove the second one.
