Big Data Driven Vehicular Networks

Vehicular communications networks (VANETs) enable information exchange among vehicles, other end devices and public networks, which plays a key role in road safety/infotainment, intelligent transportation system, and self-driving system. As the vehicular connectivity soars, and new on-road mobile applications and technologies emerge, VANETs are generating an ever-increasing amount of data, requiring fast and reliable transmissions through VANETs. On the other hand, a variety of VANETs related data can be analyzed and utilized to improve the performance of VANETs. In this article, we first review the VANETs technologies to efficiently and reliably transmit the big data. Then, the methods employing big data for studying VANETs characteristics and improving VANETs performance are discussed. Furthermore, we present a case study where machine learning schemes are applied to analyze the VANETs measurement data for efficiently detecting negative communication conditions.

Correlated Spin-Flip Tunneling in a Fermi Lattice Gas

We report the realization of correlated, density-dependent tunneling for fermionic 40K atoms trapped in an optical lattice. By appropriately tuning the frequency difference between a pair of Raman beams applied to a spin-polarized gas, simultaneous spin transitions and tunneling events are induced that depend on the relative occupations of neighboring lattice sites. Correlated spin-flip tunneling is spectroscopically resolved using gases prepared in opposite spin states, and the inferred Hubbard interaction energy is compared with a tight-binding prediction. We show that the laser-induced correlated tunneling process generates doublons via loss induced by light-assisted collisions. Furthermore, by controllably introducing vacancies to a spin-polarized gas, we demonstrate that correlated tunneling is suppressed when neighboring lattice sites are unoccupied.

Velocity-selective EIT measurement of potassium Rydberg states

We demonstrate a velocity selection scheme that mitigates suppression of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) by Doppler shifts for low--high EIT probe--coupling wavelength ordering. An optical pumping beam counter-propagating with the EIT probe beam transfers atoms between hyperfine states in a velocity selective fashion. Measurement of the transmitted probe beam synchronous with chopping of the optical pumping beam enables a Doppler-free EIT signal to be detected. Transition frequencies between 5P$_{1/2}$ and $n$S$_{1/2}$ states for $n=$26, 27, and 28 in $^{39}$K are obtained via EIT spectroscopy in a heated vapor cell with a probe beam stabilized to the 4S$_{1/2}\rightarrow$5P$_{1/2}$ transition. Using previous high-resolution measurements of the 4S$_{1/2}\rightarrow$nS$_{1/2}$ transitions, we make a determination of the absolute frequency of the 4S$_{1/2}\rightarrow$5P$_{1/2}$ transition. Our measurement is shifted by 560 MHz from the currently accepted value with a two-fold improvement in uncertainty. These measurements will enable novel experiments with Rydberg-dressed ultracold Fermi gases composed of $^{40}$K atoms.
