Decoupling Structural Heterogeneity from Functional Fairness in Complex Networks: A Theoretical Framework based on the Imbalance Metric

Performance evaluation of complex networks has traditionally focused on structural integrity or average transmission efficiency, perspectives that often overlook the dimension of functional fairness. This raises a central question: Under certain conditions, structurally heterogeneous networks can exhibit high functional fairness. To systematically address this issue, we introduce a new metric, Network Imbalance (I), designed to quantitatively assess end-to-end accessibility fairness from a perceived QoS perspective. By combining a tunable sigmoid function with a global Shannon entropy framework, the I metric quantifies the uniformity of connection experiences between all node pairs. We analyze the mathematical properties of this metric and validate its explanatory power on various classical network models. Our findings reveal that low imbalance (i.e., high functional fairness) can be achieved through two distinct mechanisms: one via topological symmetry (e.g., in a complete graph) and the other via extreme connection efficiency driven by structural inequality (e.g., in a scale-free network). This decoupling of structure and function provides a new theoretical perspective for network performance evaluation and offers an effective quantitative tool for balancing efficiency and fairness in network design.

Joint Transmit and Receive Beamforming for Tri-directional Coil-Based Magnetic Induction Communications

In this paper, we enhance the omnidirectional coverage performance of tri-directional coil-based magnetic induction communication (TC-MIC) and reduce the pathloss with a joint transmit and receive magnetic beamforming method. An iterative optimization algorithm incorporating the transmit current vector and receive weight matrix is developed to minimize the pathloss under constant transmit power constraints. We formulate the mathematical models for the mutual inductance of tri-directional coils, receive power, and pathloss. The optimization problem is decomposed into Rayleigh quotient extremum optimization for transmit currents and Cauchy-Schwarz inequality-constrained optimization for receive weights, with an alternating iterative algorithm to approach the global optimum. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm converges within an average of 13.6 iterations, achieving up to 54% pathloss reduction compared with equal power allocation schemes. The joint optimization approach exhibits superior angular robustness, maintaining pathloss fluctuation smaller than 2 dB, and reducing fluctuation of pathloss by approximately 45% compared with single-parameter optimization methods.

A High-Efficiency Reconfigurable Bidirectional Array Antenna Based on Transmit-Reflect Switchable Metasurface

This paper proposes a reconfigurable bidirectional array antenna with high-efficiency radiations and flexible beam-switching capability by employing a novel transmit-reflect switchable metasurface (TRSM). To realize the electromagnetic (EM) wave transmitted or reflected manipulation, a dedicated transmit-reflect switch layer (TRSL) with periodically soldered PIN diodes is introduced between two transmitted metasurfaces. By switching ON/OFF the embedded diodes, the TRSL performs as a mesh-type ground layer or polarization-grid layer, exhibiting a reflect or transmit property to the incident wave respectively. Further, utilizing the above TRSM configuration in conjunction with a microstrip feed antenna, bidirectional radiations are obtained at the same frequency and polarization. To further reduce the number of PIN diodes and control complexity, an enhanced TRSM using a single diode to control two unit cells is also investigated, resulting in half PIN diodes reduction. Since the bidirectional beam-switching is achieved by only controlling PIN diodes integrated in the ground plane instead of directly acting on the radiation element, which reduces insertion loss and avoids phase quantization errors, the proposed antenna can maintain a high aperture efficiency. To verify this concept, a prototype was designed, fabricated, and measured, demonstrating a successful realization of backward and forward patterns with peak gains of 22.3 and 22.1 dBi, and aperture efficiencies of 47.2% and 43.8%. The 3-dB gain bandwidths of reflected and transmitted modes are 13.7% and 12.3%. This antenna has the advantages of high gain, high aperture efficiency, simple configuration, cost-effectiveness, and flexible and digital beam control.

Joint Topology and Power Optimization for Multi-UAV Collaborative Secure Communication

In this paper, we investigate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled secure communication scenario that a cluster of UAVs performs a virtual non-uniform linear array (NULA) to communicate with a base station (BS) in the presence of eavesdroppers (Eves). Our goal is to design the UAV topology, trajectory, and precoding to maximize the system channel capacity. To this end, we convert the original problem into equivalent two-stage problems. Specifically, we first try to maximize the channel gain by meticulously designing the UAV topology. We then study the joint optimization of the trajectory and precoding for total transmit power minimization while satisfying the constraints on providing quality of service (QoS) assurance to the BS, the leakage tolerance to Eves, the per-UAV transmit power, the initial/final locations, and the cylindrical no-fly zones. For the UAV topology design, we prove that the topology follows the Fekete-point distribution. The design of trajectory and precoding is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem which is generally intractable. Subsequently, the non-convex constraints are converted into convex terms, and a double-loop search algorithm is proposed to solve the transmit power minimization problem. Introduce random rotation offsets so as to perform a dynamic stochastic channel to enhance the security. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in promoting capacity.

Active Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted MIMO: Electromagnetic-Compliant Modeling with Mutual Coupling

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) represent a transformative technology for sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications, but it suffers from a significant limitation, namely the double-fading attenuation. Active RIS has emerged as a promising solution, effectively mitigating the attenuation issues associated with conventional RIS-assisted systems. However, the current academic work on active RIS focuses on the system-level optimization of active RIS, often overlooking the development of models that are compatible with its electromagnetic (EM) and physical properties. The challenge of constructing realistic, EM-compliant models for active RIS-assisted communication, as well as understanding their implications on system-level optimization, remains an open research area. To tackle these problems, in this paper we develop a novel EM-compliant model with mutual coupling (MC) for active RIS-assisted wireless systems by integrating the developed scattering-parameter ($S$-parameter) based active RIS framework with multiport network theory, which facilitates system-level analysis and optimization. To evaluate the performance of the EM-compliant active RIS model, we design the joint optimization scheme based on the transmit beamforming at the transmitter and the reflection coefficient at the active RIS to maximize the achievable rate of EM-compliant active RIS-assisted MIMO system. To tackle the inherent non-convexity of this problem, we employ the Sherman-Morrison inversion and Neumann series (SMaN)-based alternating optimization (AO) algorithm. Simulation results verified that EM property (i.e., MC effect) is an indispensable factor in the optimization process of MIMO systems. Neglecting this effect introduces a substantial performance gap, highlighting its significance in the more pronounced the MC effect is, the greater the gap in achievable rates.

Emergency Communication: OTFS-Based Semantic Transmission with Diffusion Noise Suppression

Due to their flexibility and dynamic coverage capabilities, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as vital platforms for emergency communication in disaster-stricken areas. However, the complex channel conditions in high-speed mobile scenarios significantly impact the reliability and efficiency of traditional communication systems. This paper presents an intelligent emergency communication framework that integrates Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation, semantic communication, and a diffusion-based denoising module to address these challenges. OTFS ensures robust communication under dynamic channel conditions due to its superior anti-fading characteristics and adaptability to rapidly changing environments. Semantic communication further enhances transmission efficiency by focusing on key information extraction and reducing data redundancy. Moreover, a diffusion-based channel denoising module is proposed to leverage the gradual noise reduction process and statistical noise modeling, optimizing the accuracy of semantic information recovery. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed solution significantly improves link stability and transmission performance in high-mobility UAV scenarios, achieving at least a 3dB SNR gain over existing methods.

Redefining Information Freshness: AoGI for Generative AI in 6G Networks

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is playing an increasingly important role in enriching and facilitating human life by generating various useful information, of which real-time GenAI is a significant part and has great potential in applications such as real-time robot control, automated driving, augmented reality, etc. There are a variety of information updating processes in real-time GenAI, and the age of information (AoI) is an effective metric for evaluating information freshness. However, due to the diversity and generativity of information in real-time GenAI, it may be incompatible to directly use existing information aging metrics to assess its timeliness. In this article, we introduce a new concept called Age of Generative Information (AoGI) to evaluate the freshness of generative information, which takes into account the information delay caused not only by sampling and transmission, but also by computation. Furthermore, since real-time GenAI services are often supported by mobile-edge-cloud (MEC) collaborative computing in 6G networks and some of the generated information is privacy sensitive, it is recommended that the identities of edge and cloud should always be verified in a zero-trust manner. We introduce the concept of Age of Trust (AoT) to characterise the decay process of their trust level. We also discuss the optimisations of these evolved information aging metrics, focusing on the impact of dynamic external conditions, including wireless environments and limited computational resources. Finally, we highlight several open challenges in providing timeliness guarantees for real-time GenAI services.

Statistical QoS Provisioning for Underwater Magnetic Induction Communication

Magnetic induction (MI) communication, with stable channel conditions and small antenna size, is considered as a promising solution for underwater communication network. However, the narrowband nature of the MI link can cause significant delays in the network. To comprehensively ensure the timeliness and effectiveness of the MI network, in this paper we introduce a statistical quality of service (QoS) framework for MI communication, aiming to maximize the achievable rate while provisioning delay and queue-length requirements. Specifically, we employ effective capacity theory to model underwater MI communication. Based on convex optimization theory, we propose a current control strategy that maximizes the effective capacity under the constraints of limited channel capacity and limited power. Simulations demonstrate that the current control strategy proposed for MI communication differs significantly from that in the conventional statistical QoS provisioning framework. In addition, compared to other current control strategies, the proposed strategy substantially improves the achievable rate under various delay QoS requirements.

Continuous-Aperture Array Based OAM High-Capacity Communication For Metaverse

The extensive data interaction demands of an immersive metaverse necessitate the adoption of emerging technologies to enable high-capacity communication. Vortex electromagnetic waves with different orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes are spatially orthogonal, providing a novel spatial multiplexing dimension to achieve high-capacity communication. However, the number of orthogonal OAM modes based on a discrete uniform circular array (UCA) is limited by the number of array elements in the UCA, and traditional discrete channel models are unable to accurately capture the physical properties of vortex electromagnetic wave propagation. The continuous-aperture array (CAPA) is composed of densely packed electromagnetic excitation elements, capable of flexibly and efficiently generating the desired surface currents to produce an arbitrary number of mutually orthogonal OAM modes. From the perspective of electromagnetic information theory (EIT), we propose a CAPA-based OAM orthogonal transmission scheme to realize high-capacity communication. We design the surface currents of the CAPA using Fourier basis functions, derive the electromagnetic channel for vortex electromagnetic waves, and investigate the upper bound of the spectrum efficiency for CAPA-based OAM orthogonal transmission. This paper establishes a theoretical foundation for applying EIT to the orthogonal transmission of vortex electromagnetic waves, offering a novel solution for achieving CAPA-based efficient and high-capacity communication.

Fair AI-STA for Legacy Wi-Fi: Enhancing Sensing and Power Management with Deep Q-Learning

With the increasing complexity of Wi-Fi networks and the iterative evolution of 802.11 protocols, the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol faces significant challenges in achieving fair channel access and efficient resource allocation between legacy and modern Wi-Fi devices. To address these challenges, we propose an AI-driven Station (AI-STA) equipped with a Deep Q-Learning (DQN) module that dynamically adjusts its receive sensitivity threshold and transmit power. The AI-STA algorithm aims to maximize fairness in resource allocation while ensuring diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements are met. The performance of the AI-STA is evaluated through discrete event simulations in a Wi-Fi network, demonstrating that it outperforms traditional stations in fairness and QoS metrics. Although the AI-STA does not exhibit exceptionally superior performance, it holds significant potential for meeting QoS and fairness requirements with the inclusion of additional MAC parameters. The proposed AI-driven Sensitivity and Power algorithm offers a robust framework for optimizing sensitivity and power control in AI-STA devices within legacy Wi-Fi networks.

Digital-Analog Transmission based Emergency Semantic Communications

Emergency Wireless Communication (EWC) networks adopt the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) to transmit scene images in real time for quickly assessing the extent of the damage. However, existing UDP-based EWC exhibits suboptimal performance under poor channel conditions since UDP lacks an Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) mechanism. In addition, future EWC systems must not only enhance human decisionmaking during emergency response operations but also support Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven approaches to improve rescue efficiency. The Deep Learning-based Semantic Communication (DL-based SemCom) emerges as a robust, efficient, and taskoriented transmission scheme, suitable for deployment in UDP based EWC. Due to the constraints in hardware capabilities and transmission resources, the EWC transmitter is unable to integrate sufficiently powerful NN model, thereby failing to achieve ideal performance under EWC scene. For EWC scene, we propose a performance-constrained semantic coding model, which considers the effects of the semantic noise and the channel noise. Then, we derive Cramer-Rao lower bound of the proposed semantic coding model, as guidance for the design of semantic codec to enhance its adaptability to semantic noise as well as channel noise. To further improve the system performance, we propose Digital-Analog transmission based Emergency Semantic Communication (DAESemCom) framework, which integrates the analog DL-based semantic coding and the digital Distributed Source Coding (DSC) schemes to leverage their respective advantages. The simulation results show that the proposed DA-ESemCom framework outperforms the classical Separated Source-Channel Coding (SSCC) and other DL-based Joint Source-Channel Coding (DL-based JSCC) schemes in terms of fidelity and detection performances.

Capacity Analysis on OAM-Based Wireless Communications: An Electromagnetic Information Theory Perspective

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) technology enhances the spectrum and energy efficiency of wireless communications by enabling multiplexing over different OAM modes. However, classical information theory, which relies on scalar models and far-field approximations, cannot fully capture the unique characteristics of OAM-based systems, such as their complex electromagnetic field distributions and near-field behaviors. To address these limitations, this paper analyzes OAM-based wireless communications from an electromagnetic information theory (EIT) perspective, integrating electromagnetic theory with classical information theory. EIT accounts for the physical properties of electromagnetic waves, offering advantages such as improved signal manipulation and better performance in real-world conditions. Given these benefits, EIT is more suitable for analyzing OAM-based wireless communication systems. Presenting a typical OAM model utilizing uniform circular arrays (UCAs), this paper derives the channel capacity based on the induced electric fields by using Green's function. Numerical and simulation results validate the channel capacity enhancement via exploration under EIT framework. Additionally, this paper evaluates the impact of various parameters on the channel capacity. These findings provide new insights for understanding and optimizing OAM-based wireless communications systems.

RIS-assisted Seamless Connectivity in Wireless Multi-Hop Relay Networks

In recent years, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have garnered significant attention for their ability to control the phase shifts in reflected signals. By intelligently adjusting these phases, RIS can establish seamless direct paths between communication devices obstructed by obstacles, eliminating the need for forwarding and significantly reducing system overhead associated with relaying. This capability is crucial in multi-hop ad hoc networks requiring multiple relay steps. Consequently, the concept of incorporating multi-hop RIS into wireless multi-hop relay networks has emerged. In this paper, we propose a novel network model where each UAV communication node is equipped with a RIS, facilitating seamless connections in multi-hop relay wireless networks. We analyze the performance of this model by integrating RIS-assisted physical layer modeling into the seamless connection network framework and conducting a detailed comparative analysis of RIS-assisted and conventional connections. At the medium access layer, we introduce a RIS-DCF MAC protocol based on the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF), modeling the medium access process as a two-hop access scenario. Our results demonstrate that the seamless connections and diversity gain provided by RIS significantly enhance the performance of multi-hop relay wireless networks.

MAC Revivo: Artificial Intelligence Paves the Way

The vast adoption of Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth capabilities in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, along with the rapid growth of deployed smart devices, has caused significant interference and congestion in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands. Traditional Wi-Fi Medium Access Control (MAC) design faces significant challenges in managing increasingly complex wireless environments while ensuring network Quality of Service (QoS) performance. This paper explores the potential integration of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods into the design of Wi-Fi MAC protocols. We propose AI-MAC, an innovative approach that employs machine learning algorithms to dynamically adapt to changing network conditions, optimize channel access, mitigate interference, and ensure deterministic latency. By intelligently predicting and managing interference, AI-MAC aims to provide a robust solution for next generation of Wi-Fi networks, enabling seamless connectivity and enhanced QoS. Our experimental results demonstrate that AI-MAC significantly reduces both interference and latency, paving the way for more reliable and efficient wireless communications in the increasingly crowded ISM band.

AoI-Aware Resource Allocation for Smart Multi-QoS Provisioning

The Age of Information (AoI) has recently gained recognition as a critical quality-of-service (QoS) metric for quantifying the freshness of status updates, playing a crucial role in supporting massive ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (mURLLC) services. In mURLLC scenarios, due to the inherent system dynamics and varying environmental conditions, optimizing AoI under such multi-QoS constraints considering both delay and reliability often results in non-convex and computationally intractable problems. Motivated by the demonstrated efficacy of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in addressing large-scale networking challenges, this work aims to apply DRL techniques to derive optimal resource allocation solutions in real time. Despite its potential, the effective integration of FBC in DRL-based AoI optimization remains underexplored, especially in addressing the challenge of simultaneously upper-bounding both delay and error-rate. To address these challenges, we propose a DRL-based framework for AoI-aware optimal resource allocation in mURLLC-driven multi-QoS schemes, leveraging AoI as a core metric within the finite blocklength regime. First, we design a wireless communication architecture and AoI-based modeling framework that incorporates FBC. Second, we proceed by deriving upper-bounded peak AoI and delay violation probabilities using stochastic network calculus (SNC). Subsequently, we formulate an optimization problem aimed at minimizing the peak AoI violation probability through FBC. Third, we develop DRL algorithms to determine optimal resource allocation policies that meet statistical delay and error-rate requirements for mURLLC. Finally, to validate the effectiveness of the developed schemes, we have executed a series of simulations.

FBC-Enhanced ε-Effective Capacity Optimization for NOMA

The advent of massive ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (mURLLC) has introduced a critical class of time- and reliability-sensitive services within next-generation wireless networks. This shift has attracted significant research attention, driven by the need to meet stringent quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. In this context, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems have emerged as a promising solution to enhance mURLLC performance by providing substantial enhancements in both spectral efficiency and massive connectivity, particularly through the development of finite blocklength coding (FBC) techniques. Nevertheless, owing to the dynamic nature of wireless network environments and the complex architecture of FBC-enhanced NOMA systems, the research on the efficient design of optimizing the system performance for maximizing system capacity while guaranteeing the tail distributions in terms of new statistical QoS constraints for delay and error-rate is still in its infancy. In an effort to address these challenges, we put forth the formulation and solution of ε-effective capacity problems tailored for uplink FBC-enhanced NOMA systems, specifically catering to ensure statistical delay and error-rate bounded QoS requirements. In particular, we establish uplink two-user FBC-enhanced NOMA system models by applying the hybrid successive interference cancellation (SIC). We also develop the concept of the ε-effective capacity and propose the optimal power allocation policies to maximize the ε-effective capacity and ε-effective energy efficiency while upper-bounding both delay and error-rate. We conduct a set of simulations to validate and evaluate our developed optimization schemes over FBC-enhanced NOMA systems.

SC-CDM: Enhancing Quality of Image Semantic Communication with a Compact Diffusion Model

Semantic Communication (SC) is an emerging technology that has attracted much attention in the sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication systems. However, few literature has fully considered the perceptual quality of the reconstructed image. To solve this problem, we propose a generative SC for wireless image transmission (denoted as SC-CDM). This approach leverages compact diffusion models to improve the fidelity and semantic accuracy of the images reconstructed after transmission, ensuring that the essential content is preserved even in bandwidth-constrained environments. Specifically, we aim to redesign the swin Transformer as a new backbone for efficient semantic feature extraction and compression. Next, the receiver integrates the slim prior and image reconstruction networks. Compared to traditional Diffusion Models (DMs), it leverages DMs' robust distribution mapping capability to generate a compact condition vector, guiding image recovery, thus enhancing the perceptual details of the reconstructed images. Finally, a series of evaluation and ablation studies are conducted to validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm and further increase the Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) by over 17% on top of CNN-based DeepJSCC.

SAFE: Semantic Adaptive Feature Extraction with Rate Control for 6G Wireless Communications

Most current Deep Learning-based Semantic Communication (DeepSC) systems are designed and trained exclusively for particular single-channel conditions, which restricts their adaptability and overall bandwidth utilization. To address this, we propose an innovative Semantic Adaptive Feature Extraction (SAFE) framework, which significantly improves bandwidth efficiency by allowing users to select different sub-semantic combinations based on their channel conditions. This paper also introduces three advanced learning algorithms to optimize the performance of SAFE framework as a whole. Through a series of simulation experiments, we demonstrate that the SAFE framework can effectively and adaptively extract and transmit semantics under different channel bandwidth conditions, of which effectiveness is verified through objective and subjective quality evaluations.
