Orbital Angular Momentum Active Anti-Jamming in Radio Wireless Communications

Orbital angular momentum (OAM), providing the orthogonality among different OAM modes, has attracted much attention to significantly increase spectrum efficiencies (SEs) and enhance the anti-jamming results of wireless communications. However, the SE of wireless communications is severely degraded under co-frequency and co-mode hostile jamming. Focused on this issue, we propose a novel OAM active anti-jamming scheme to significantly enhance the anti-jamming results of wireless communications under broadband hostile jamming. Specifically, the OAM transmitter with energy detection senses jamming signals to identify which OAM modes are jammed and unjammed. Based on the recognition of OAM modes, useful signals are modulated by reflecting the received co-frequency and co-mode jamming signals with the assistance of a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) to the OAM receiver, thus utilizing both the OAM modes jammed by hostile attacks and the energy of jamming signals. Meanwhile, the unjammed OAM modes allocated with total transmit power are multiplexed for useful signal transmission. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed OAM active anti-jamming scheme can achieve high OAM mode utilization and significantly increase the SEs.

Virtual Full-Duplex Wireless Communications with Zero-Interval Modulation and Sampling

In this paper, we propose a virtual full-duplex (VFD) technique with zero-interval modulation and sampling (ZIMS), where two half-duplex (HD) transceivers can simultaneously transmit signals and each transceiver can effectively receive the desired information. In ZIMS-VFD, the transceiver inserts a zero-interval for each symbol in the transmit signal and provides self-interference (SI)-free intervals for itself. Meanwhile, it samples the receive signal in the provided SI-free intervals and restores the desired symbols. Based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), we formulate the system model and show the transmit signal structure. Then, we give the transceiver design for single input single output (SISO) ZIMS-VFD and extend it to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications. Numerical results verify our theoretical analyses and show that ZIMS-VFD can effectively increase the capacity and approach the FD without SI.

Multi-Frequency Resonant Circuit Based Multi-User Emergency Through-the-Earth Communication with Magnetic Induction

Magnetic induction (MI) is an effective technique in emergency through-the-earth communications due to the higher penetration efficiency and lower propagation loss as compared with electromagnetic wave communication. How to cancel the interference between different users and enhance the effectiveness of multi-user transmissions is imperative for the practical application of MI communication. In this paper, we use multi-frequency resonant circuit to establish multiple resonant frequencies for MI communication. The transmissions corresponding to different users operate at different resonant frequencies and multi-user interferences can be naturally mitigated. Numerical results verify our theoretical analyses and show that the proposed system can significantly enhance the performance.

The Rise of UAV Fleet Technologies for Emergency Wireless Communications in Harsh Environments

For unforeseen emergencies, such as natural disasters and pandemic events, it is highly demanded to cope with the explosive growth of mobile data traffic in extremely critical environments. An Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fleet is an effective way to facilitate the Emergency wireless COmmunication NETwork (EcoNet). In this article, a MUlti-tier Heterogeneous UAV Network (MuHun), which is with different UAV fleets in different altitudes, is proposed to flexibly serve various emergencies. We refresh the key performance indicators of full coverage, network capacity, low latency, and energy efficiency in harsh environments. Then, we present the special challenges regarding shadowing-dominated complex channel model, energy supply limited short-endurance, various communication mechanisms coexistence, and communication island for underground users in UAV-based EcoNet, followed by the MuHun-based EcoNet architecture and its advantages. Furthermore, some potential solutions such as the new hybrid-channel adapted resource allocation, reconfigurable intelligent surface assisted UAV communications, competitive heterogenous-networks, and magnetic induction based air-to-ground/underground communications are discussed to effectively achieve full coverage, high capacity, high energy efficiency, and diverse qualities of services for EcoNets in harsh environments.

Resource Allocation for 5G-UAV Based Emergency Wireless Communications

For unforeseen natural disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods, etc., the traditional communication infrastructure is unavailable or seriously disrupted along with persistent secondary disasters. Under such circumstances, it is highly demanded to deploy emergency wireless communication (EWC) networks to restore connectivity in accident/incident areas. The emerging fifth-generation (5G)/beyond-5G (B5G) wireless communication system, like unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assisted networks and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) based communication systems, are expected to be designed or re-farmed for supporting temporary high quality communications in post-disaster areas. However, the channel characteristics of post-disaster areas quickly change as the secondary disaster resulted topographical changes, imposing new but critical challenges for EWC networks. In this paper, we propose a novel heterogeneous $\mathcal{F}$ composite fading channel model for EWC networks which accurately models and characterizes the composite fading channel with reflectors, path-loss exponent, fading, and shadowing parameters in 5G-UAV based EWC networks. Based on the model, we develop the optimal power allocation scheme with the simple closed-form expression and the numerical results based optimal joint bandwidth-power allocation scheme. We derive the corresponding capacities and compare the energy efficiency between IRS and traditional relay based 5G-UAVs. Numerical results show that the new heterogeneous Fisher-Snedecor $\mathcal{F}$ composite fading channel adapted resource allocation schemes can achieve higher capacity and energy efficiency than those of traditional channel model adapted resource allocation schemes, thus providing better communications service for post-disaster areas.

Multi-Beam Symbol-Level Secure Communication for Hybrid Near- and Far-Field Communications

This paper introduces a multi-beam secure communication scheme for mixed near-field and far-field (hNF) scenarios, primarily designed to address the challenges faced by sixth-generation (6G) networks in simultaneously managing near-field and far-field communications. This method significantly reduces the signal quality at eavesdroppers(Eves) while ensuring high-quality reception for legitimate users, effectively enhancing communication security. At the transmitter, this study employs multi-beam symbol-level directional modulation to ensure secure and reliable transmission in a mixed eavesdropping environment. Given the uncertainty about eavesdropper information, the transmission beamforming vectors are specially designed to meet specific symbol-level constraints, thereby ensuring effective reception for legitimate users. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in improving secrecy performance, reducing transmission power, and enhancing energy efficiency, offering a practical solution to the security challenges faced by future wireless networks.

Robust Multi-Beam Secure mmWave Wireless Communication for Hybrid Wiretapping Systems

In this paper, we consider the physical layer (PHY) security problem for hybrid wiretapping wireless systems in millimeter wave transmission, where active eavesdroppers (AEs) and passive eavesdroppers (PEs) coexist to intercept the confidential messages and emit jamming signals. To achieve secure and reliable transmission, we propose an artificial noise (AN)-aided robust multi-beam array transceiver scheme. Leveraging beamforming, we aim to minimize transmit power by jointly designing the information and AN beamforming, while satisfying valid reception for legitimate users (LUs), per-antenna power constraints for transmitter, as well as all interception power constraints for eavesdroppers (Eves). In particular, the interception power formulation is taken into account for protecting the information against hybrid Eves with imperfect AE channel state information (CSI) and no PE CSI. In light of the intractability of the problem, we reformulate the considered problem by replacing non-convex constraints with tractable forms. Afterwards, a two-stage algorithm is developed to obtain the optimal solution. Additionally, we design the received beamforming weights by means of minimum variance distortionless response, such that the jamming caused by AEs can be effectively suppressed. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed scheme in terms of energy efficiency and security.

Joint Information and Jamming Beamforming for Securing IoT Networks With Rate-Splitting

The goal of this paper is to address the physical layer (PHY) security problem for multi-user multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) Internet of Things (IoT) systems in the presence of passive eavesdroppers (Eves). To this end, we propose an artificial noise (AN)-aided rate-splitting (RS)-based secure beamforming scheme. Our design considers the dual use of common messages and places the research emphasis on hiding the private messages for secure communication. In particular, leveraging AN-aided RS-based beamforming, we aim to maximize the focused secrecy sum-rate (F-SSR) by jointly designing transmit information and AN beamforming while satisfying the desired received constraints for the private messages at IoT devices (IoDs), and per-antenna transmit power constraint at base station. Then, we proposed a two-stage algorithm to iteratively find the optimal solution. By transforming non-convex terms into linear terms, we first reformulate the original problem as a convex program. Next, we recast the optimization problem to an unconstrained problem to obtain the global optimal solutions. Utilizing the duality framework, we further develop an efficient algorithm based on a barrier interior point method to solve the reformulated problem. Simulation results validate the superior performance of our proposed schemes.

Location-Driven Beamforming for RIS-Assisted Near-Field Communications

Future wireless communications are promising to support ubiquitous connections and high data rates with cost-effective devices. Benefiting from the energy-efficient elements with low cost, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) emerges as a potential solution to fulfill such demands, which has the capability to flexibly manipulate the wireless signals with a tunable phase. Recently, as the operational frequency ascends to the sub-terahertz (THz) bands or higher bands for wireless communications in six-generation (6G), it becomes imperative to consider the near-field propagation in RIS-assisted communications. The challenging acquisition of channel parameters is an inherent issue for near-field RIS-assisted communications, where the complex design is essential to acquire the informative near-field channel embedded with both the angle and distance information. Hence, in this paper we systematically investigate the potential of exploiting location information for near-field RIS-assisted communications. Firstly, we present the progresses in the near-field RIS-assisted communications, which are compatible with existing wireless communications and show the potential to achieve the fine-grained localization accuracy to support location-driven scheme. Then, the Fresnel zone based model is introduced, with which the location-driven beamforming scheme and corresponding frame structure are developed. Also, we elaborate on four unique advantages for leveraging location information in RIS-assisted communications, followed by numerical simulations. Finally, several key challenges and corresponding potential solutions are pointed out.

Mode Hopping with OAM-Based Index Modulation

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) based mode hopping (MH) scheme is expected to be a potential anti-jamming technology in radio vortex wireless communications. However, it only uses one OAM-mode for hopping, thus resulting in low spectrum efficiency (SE). Index modulation offers a trade-off balance between the SE and performance reliability. In this paper, we propose an MH with OAM-based index modulation scheme, where several OAM-modes are activated for hopping, to achieve high SE at a given bit error rate in radio vortex wireless communications. Based on the proposed scheme, we derive the upper bound and lower bound of achievable SEs. Furthermore, in order to take advantage of index information, we derive the optimal hopped OAM-modes to achieve the maximum SE. Numerical results show that our proposed MH with index modulation scheme can achieve high SE while satisfying a certain reliability of radio vortex wireless communications.

Decomposed and Distributed Directional Modulation for Secure Wireless Communication

Directional modulation and artificial noise (AN)-based methods have been widely employed to achieve physical-layer security (PLS). However, these approaches can only achieve angle-dependent secure transmission. This paper presents an AN-aided decomposed and distributed directional modulation (D3M) scheme for secure wireless communications, which takes advantage of the spatial signatures to achieve an extra range-dimension security apart from the angles. Leveraging decomposed and distributed structure, each of modulated signal is represented by mutually orthogonal in-phase and quadrature branches, which are transmitted by two distributed transmitters to enhance PLS. In particular, we first aim to minimize transmit message power by integrated design of the transmit beamformers, subject to prescribed received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the legitimate user (LU) and no inter-branch interference. This guarantees reliable and accurate transmission for the LU with the minimum transmit message power. Considering the leakage power on the sidelobes, AN is superimposed on the messages to try to mask the confidential information transmission. Simulation results demonstrate the security enhancement of our proposed D3M system.

Joint OAM Multiplexing and OFDM in Sparse Multipath Environments

The emerging orbital angular momentum (OAM) based wireless communication is expected to be a high spectrum-efficiency communication paradigm to solve the growing transmission data rate and limited bandwidth problem. Academic researchers mainly concentrate on the OAM-based line-of-sight (LoS) communications. However, there exist some surroundings around the transceiver in most practical wireless communication scenarios, thus forming multipath transmission. In this paper, a hybrid orthogonal division multiplexing (HODM) scheme by using OAM multiplexing and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in conjunction is proposed to achieve high-capacity wireless communications in sparse multipath environments, where the scatterers are sparse. We first build the OAM-based wireless channel in a LoS path and several reflection paths combined sparse multipath environments. We concentrate on less than or equal to three-time reflection paths because of the severe energy attenuation. The phase difference among the channel amplitude gains of the LoS and reflection paths, which is caused by the reflection paths, makes it difficult to decompose the OAM signals. We propose the phase difference compensation to handle this problem and then calculate the corresponding capacity in radio vortex wireless communications. Numerical results illustrate that the capacity of wireless communications by using our proposed HODM scheme can be drastically increased in sparse multipath environments.

Mode Hopping for Anti-Jamming in Radio Vortex Wireless Communications

Frequency hopping (FH) has been widely used as a powerful technique for antijamming in wireless communications. However, as the wireless spectrum is becoming more and more crowded, it is very difficult to achieve efficient antijamming results with FH-based schemes. Orbital angular momentum (OAM), which provides the new angular/mode dimension for wireless communications, offers an intriguing way for antijamming. In this paper, we propose to use the orthogonality of OAM-modes for antijamming in wireless communications. In particular, we propose the mode hopping (MH) scheme for antijamming within the narrow frequency band. We derive the closed-form expression of bit error rate (BER) for multiple users scenario with our developed MH scheme. Our developed MH scheme can achieve the same antijamming results within the narrow frequency band as compared with the conventional wideband FH scheme. Furthermore, we propose mode-frequency hopping (MFH) scheme, which jointly uses our developed MH scheme and the conventional FH scheme to further decrease the BER for wireless communication. Numerical results are presented to show that the BER of our developed MH scheme within the narrow frequency band is the same with that of the conventional wideband FH scheme. Moreover, the BER of our developed MFH schemes is much smaller than that of the conventional FH schemes for wireless communications.

Delay Tradeoff and Adaptive Finite Blocklength Framework for URLLC

With various time-sensitive tasks to be served, ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) has become one of the most important scenarios for the fifth generation (5G) wireless communications. The end-to-end delay from the sub-millisecond-level to the second-level is first put forward for a wide range of delay-sensitive tasks in the future sixth generation (6G) communication networks, which imposes a strict requirement on satisfying various real-time services and applications with different stringent quality of service (QoS) demands. Thus, we need to find out new delay reduction framework to satisfy the more stringent delay requirements. In this article, a state-of-the-art overview of end-to-end delay composition and delay analysis combined with access protocols are elaborated. We reveal the tradeoff relationship among transmission delay, queuing delay, and retransmission times with the change of blocklength in the finite blocklength (FBL) regime. Based on the tradeoff and combining the grant-free (GF) random access (RA) scheme, we propose the adaptive blocklength framework and investigate several effective algorithms for efficiently reducing the over-the-air delay. Numerical results show that our proposed framework and schemes can significantly reduce the over-the-air delay for URLLC.

Index Modulation Embedded Mode Hopping for Anti-Jamming

Due to the crowded spectrum, frequency hopping (FH) techniques are now very difficult to achieve efficient antijamming and increase spectrum efficiency (SE) for wireless communications. The emerging orbital angular momentum (OAM), which is a property describing the helical phase fronts of electromagnetic waves, offers the potential to improve reliability and increase SE in wireless communications. To achieve efficient anti-jamming and increase SE of wireless communications with slight computational complexity cost, in this paper we propose an index-modulation embedded mode-hopping (IM-MH) scheme, which simultaneously activates several OAM-modes for hopping along with additional index information and signal information transmission. We analyze the average bit error rates (ABERs) for our proposed IM-MH scheme with perfect channel state information (CSI) and imperfect CSI, respectively. We also propose the index-modulation embedded double-serial MH (IMDSMH) scheme, which randomly activates one OAM-mode as the serial second hop to transmit the hopping signals in the IM-MH scheme, to further decrease the ABER of wireless communications. Extensive numerical results demonstrate that our proposed schemes within a narrowband can achieve the low ABER and significantly increase the SE. Also, the ABERs of our proposed IM-MH and IM-DSMH schemes are around 25% and 10%, respectively, compared with that of the mode hopping scheme.

RIS-Based Self-Interference Cancellation for Full-Duplex Broadband Transmission

Full-duplex (FD) is an attractive technology that can significantly boost the throughput of wireless communications. However, it is limited by the severe self-interference (SI) from the transmitter to the local receiver. In this paper, we propose a new SI cancellation (SIC) scheme based on reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), where small RISs are deployed inside FD devices to enhance SIC capability and system capacity under frequencyselective fading channels. The novel scheme can not only address the challenges associated with SIC but also improve the overall performance. We first analyze the near-field behavior of the RIS and then formulate an optimization problem to maximize the SIC capability by controlling the reflection coefficients (RCs) of the RIS and allocating the transmit power of the device. The problem is solved with alternate optimization (AO) algorithm in three cases: ideal case, where both the amplitude and phase of each RIS unit cell can be controlled independently and continuously, continuous phases, where the phase of each RIS unit cell can be controlled independently, while the amplitude is fixed to one, and discrete phases, where the RC of each RIS unit cell can only take discrete values and these discrete values are equally spaced on the unit circle. For the ideal case, the closed-form solution to RC is derived with Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. Based on Riemannian conjugate gradient (RCG) algorithm, we optimize the RC for the case of continuous phases and then extend the solution to the case of discrete phases by the nearest point projection (NPP) method. Simulation results are given to validate the performance of our proposed SIC scheme.

Adaptive Finite Blocklength for Low Access Delay in 6G Wireless Networks

As the number of real-time applications with ultra-low delay requirements quickly grows, massive ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (mURLLC) has been proposed to provide a wide range of delay-sensitive services for the sixth generation (6G) wireless networks. However, it is difficult to meet the stringent delay demand of massive connectivity with existing grant-based (GB) random access and fixed frame structure in long-term evolution (LTE) and the fifth generation (5G) new radio (NR) systems. To solve this problem, in this paper we propose the new grant-free (GF) based adaptive blocklength scheme for short packet transmission to reduce the access delay. We develop the adaptive blocklength framework where the blocklength can be adaptively changed according to the real-time load, to revise the traditional non-flexible frame structure which impacts the delay performance. Taking the features of mURLLC into consideration, we analyze the GF random access procedure, packet arrival behavior, packet collision, and packet transmission error in the finite blocklength (FB) regime. On this basis, we derive the closed-form expression of successful access and transmission probability and give the GF-based status update model. Then, we propose the access delay minimization problem that jointly considers queuing delay and transmission delay to reduce the overall access delay. With the alternating optimization algorithm, we obtain the optimal blocklength of each packet, thus forming the corresponding adaptive blocklength scheme for mURLLC. Simulation results verify the correctness of theoretical results and show that our proposed adaptive blocklength scheme can significantly reduce the access delay compared with that of LTE and 5G NR systems.

Performance Analysis and Blocklength Minimization of Uplink RSMA for Short Packet Transmissions in URLLC

Rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) is one of the most promising techniques for ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) with stringent requirements on delay and reliability of multiple access. To fully explore the delay performance enhancement brought by uplink RSMA to URLLC, in this paper, we evaluate the performance of two-user uplink RSMA and propose the corresponding blocklength minimization problem. We analyze the impact of finite blocklength (FBL) code on the achievable rate region and the effective throughput of uplink RSMA. On this basis, we propose the problem of minimizing the blocklength for uplink RSMA with power allocation under constrained reliability and effective throughput. Then, we present an alternating optimization method to solve this non-convex problem. Simulation results show that different from the infinite blocklength (IBL) regime, the achievable rate region of the uplink RSMA is not always larger than that of uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in the FBL regime. But with the help of our proposed blocklength minimization scheme, uplink RSMA can achieve the same achievable rate with a smaller blocklength compared to uplink NOMA, frequency division multiple access (FDMA), and time division multiple access (TDMA) without the need for time sharing in the FBL regime, showing the potential of uplink RSMA to achieve low delay for URLLC.
