Lawson Homology for Abelian Varieties

In this paper we introduce the Fourier-Mukai transform for Lawson homology of abelian varieties and prove an inversion theorem for the Lawson homology as well as the morphic cohomology of abelian varieties. As applications, we obtain the direct sum decomposition of the Lawson homology and the morphic cohomology groups with rational coefficients, inspired by Beauville's works on the Chow theory. An analogue of the Beauville conjecture for Chow groups is proposed and is shown to be equivalent to the (weak) Suslin conjecture for Lawson homology. A filtration on Lawson homology is proposed and conjecturally it coincides to the filtration given by the direct sum decomposition of Lawson homology for abelian varieties. Moreover, a refined Friedlander-Lawson duality theorem is obtained for abelian varieties. We summarize several related conjectures in Lawson homology theory in the appendix for convenience.

On Additive invariants of actions of additive and multiplicative groups

The additive invariants of an algebraic variety is calculated in terms of those of the fixed point set under the action of additive and multiplicative groups, by using Bialynicki-Birula's fixed point formula for a projective algebraicset with a G_m-action or G_a-action. The method is also generalized to calculate certain additive invariants for Chow varieties. As applications, we obtain the Hodge polynomial of Chow varieties in characteristic zero and the number of points for Chow varieties over finite fields. As applications, we obtain the l-adic Euler-Poincare characteristic for the Chow varieties of certain projective varieties over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. Moreover, we show that the virtual Hodge (p,0) and (0,q)-numbers of the Chow varieties and affine group varieties are zero for all p,q positive.

The Lawson-Yau Formula and its generalization

The Euler characteristic of Chow varieties of algebraic cycles of a given degree in complex projective spaces was computed by Blaine Lawson and Stephen Yau by using holomorphic symmetries of cycles spaces. In this paper we compute this in a direct and elementary way and generalize this formula to the l-adic Euler-Poincare characteristic for Chow varieties over any algebraically closed field. Moreover, the Euler characteristic for Chow varieties with certain group action is calculated. In particular, we calculate the Euler characteristic of the space of right quaternionic cycles of a given dimension and degree in complex projective spaces.

Notes on Algebraic Cycles and Homotopy theory

We show that a conjecture by Lawson holds, that is, the inclusion from the Chow variety $C_{p,d}(P^n)$ of all effective algebraic p-cycles of degree d in n-dimensional projective space to the space of effective algebraic p-cycles is 2d-connected. As a result, the homotopy and homology groups of $C_{p,d}(P^n)$ are calculated up to 2d. We also show an analogous statement for Chow variety $C_{p,d}(¶^n)$ over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic and compute their etale homotopy groups up to 2d.

Algebraic Cycles of a Fixed Degree

In this paper, the homotopy groups of Chow variety $C_{p,d}(P^n)$ of effective $p$-cycles of degree $d$ is proved to be stable in the sense that $p$ or $n$ increases. We also obtain a negative answer to a question by Lawson and Michelsohn on homotopy groups for the space of degree two cycles.

The Generalized Bloch Conjecture for the quotient of certain Calabi-Yau varieties

In this paper, the generalized Bloch Conjecture on zero cycles for the quotient of certain complete intersections with trivial canonical bundle is proved to hold. As an application of Bloch-Srinivas method on the decomposition of the diagonal, we compute the rational coefficient Lawson homology for 1-cycles and codimension two cycles for these quotient varieties. The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture is proved to hold for codimension two cycles (and hence also for 2-cycles) on these quotient varieties.

Lawson homology, morphic cohomology and Chow motives

In this paper, the Lawson homology and morphic cohomology are defined on the Chow motives. We also define the rational coefficient Lawson homology and morphic cohomology of the Chow motives of finite quotient projective varieties. As a consequence, we obtain a formula for the Hilbert scheme of points on a smooth complex projective surface. Further discussion concerning generic finite maps is given. As a result, we give examples of self-product of smooth projective curves with nontrivial Griffiths groups by using a result of Ceresa.

Generalized Abel-Jacobi map on Lawson homology

We construct an Abel-Jacobi type map on the homologically trivial part of Lawson homology groups. It generalizes the Abel-Jacobi map constructed by Griffiths. By using a result of H. Clemens, we give some examples of smooth projective manifolds with infinite generated Lawson homology groups L_pH_k(X,Q) when k>2p.

The Generalized Hodge conjecture for 1-cycles and codimension two algebraic cycles

In this paper, we prove that the statement: ``The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture holds for codimension-two cycles on a smooth projective variety $X$" is a birationally invariant statement, that is, if the statement is true for $X$, it is also true for all smooth varieties $X'$ which are birationally equivalent to $X$. We also prove the analogous result for 1-cycles. As direct corollaries, the Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimension less than or equal to five, and, the Generalized Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimension less than or equal to four.

A note on Lawson homology for smooth varieties with small Chow groups

Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension n on which rational and homological equivalence coincide for algebraic p-cycles in the range 0\leq p\leq s. We show that the homologically trivial sector of rational Lawson homology L_pH_k(X,Q)_{hom} vanishes for 0\leq n-p\leq s+2. This is an analogue of a theorem of C. Peters in "dual dimensions". Together with Peters' theorem we get that the natural transformation L_pH_k(X,Q)--> H_k(X,Q) is injective for all p and k when X is a smooth projective variety of dimension 4 and Ch_0(X) =Z.

Some relations between the topological and geometric filtration for smooth projective varieties

In the first part of this paper, we show that the assertion "T_pH_k(X,Q)=G_pH_k(X,Q)" (which is called the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture) is a birationally invariant statement for smooth projective varieties X when p=dim(X)-2 and when p=1. We also establish the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture in certain dimensions. More precisely, for a smooth projective variety X, we show that the topological filtration T_pH_{2p+1}(X,Q) coincides with the geometric filtration G_pH_{2p+1}(X,Q) for all p. (Friedlander and Mazur had previously shown that T_pH_{2p}(X,Q})=G_pH_{2p}(X,Q)). As a corollary, we conclude that for a smooth projective threefold X, T_pH_k(X,Q)=G_pH_k(X,Q) for all k\geq 2p\geq 0 except for the case p=1,k=4. Finally, we show that the topological and geometric filtrations always coincide if Suslin's conjecture holds.

Birational invariants defined by Lawson homology

New birational invariants for a projective manifold are defined by using Lawson homology. These invariants can be highly nontrivial even for projective threefolds. Our techniques involve the weak factorization theorem of Wlodarczyk and tools developed by Friedlander, Lawson, Lima-Filho and others. A blowup formula for Lawson homology is given in a separate section. As an application, we show that for each n\geq 5, there is a smooth rational variety X of dimension n such that the Griffiths groups Griff}_p(X) are infinitely generated even modulo torsion for all p with 2\leq p\leq n-3.

Infinitely generated Lawson homology groups on some rational projective varieties

We construct rational projective 4-dimensional varieties with the property that certain Lawson homology groups tensored with Q are infinite dimensional Q-vector spaces. More generally, each pair of integers p and k, with k\geq 0, p>0, we find a projective variety Y, such that L_pH_{2p+k}(Y) is infinitely generated. We also construct two singular rational projective 3-dimensional varieties Y and Y' with the same homeomorphism type but different Lawson homology groups, specifically L_1H_3(Y) is not isomorphic to L_1H_3(Y')even up to torsion.
