Completing the Complexity Classification of 2-Solo Chess: Knights and Kings are Hard

We extend the study of the 2-Solo Chess problem which was first introduced by Aravind, Misra, and Mittal in 2022. 2-Solo Chess is a single-player variant of chess in which the player must clear the board via captures such that only one piece remains, with each piece capturing at most twice. It is known that the problem is solvable in polynomial time for instances containing only pawns, while it becomes NP-complete for instances restricted to rooks, bishops, or queens. In this work, we complete the complexity classification by proving that 2-Solo Chess is NP-complete if the instance contains only knights or only kings.

Flow-weighted Layered Metric Euclidean Capacitated Steiner Tree Problem

Motivated by hierarchical networks, we introduce the Flow-weighted Layered Metric Euclidean Capacitated Steiner Tree (FLaMECaST) problem, a variant of the Euclidean Steiner tree with layered structure and capacity constraints per layer. The goal is to construct a cost-optimal Steiner forest connecting a set of sources to a set of sinks under load-dependent edge costs. We prove that FLaMECaST is NP-hard to approximate, even in restricted cases where all sources lie on a circle. However, assuming few additional constraints for such instances, we design a dynamic program that achieves a $\left(1 + \frac{1}{2^n}\right)$-approximation in polynomial time. By generalizing the structural insights the dynamic program is based on, we extend the approach to certain settings, where all sources are positioned on a convex polygon.

The Constrained Layer Tree Problem and Applications to Solar Farm Cabling

Motivated by the cabling of solar farms, we study the problem Constrained Layer Tree. At its core, it asks whether there exists a tree that connects a set of sources (the leaves) to one sink (the root) such that certain capacity constraints at the inner nodes are satisfied. Our main algorithmic contribution is a dynamic program with various optimizations for Constrained Layer Tree. It outperforms the previously used MILP by multiple orders of magnitude. Moreover, our experiments show that the somewhat abstract problem Constrained Layer Tree is actually the core of the cabling problem in solar farms, i.e., the feasible solution produced by our dynamic program can be used to bootstrap an MILP that can then find good solutions for the original cabling problem efficiently.

An improved planar graph product structure theorem

Dujmović, Joret, Micek, Morin, Ueckerdt and Wood [J. ACM 2020] proved that for every planar graph $G$ there is a graph $H$ with treewidth at most 8 and a path $P$ such that $G\subseteq H\boxtimes P$. We improve this result by replacing "treewidth at most 8" by "simple treewidth at most 6".
