A Direct Approach to Simultaneous Tests of Superiority and Noninferiority with Multiple Endpoints

Simultaneous tests of superiority and non-inferiority hypotheses on multiple endpoints are often performed in clinical trials to demonstrate that a new treatment is superior over a control on at least one endpoint and non-inferior on the remaining endpoints. Existing methods tackle this problem by testing the superiority and non-inferiority hypotheses separately and control the Type I error rate each at $α$ level. In this paper we propose a unified approach to testing the superiority and non-inferiority hypotheses simultaneously. The proposed approach is based on the UI-IU test and the least favorable configurations of the combined superiority and non-inferiority hypotheses, which leads to the solution of an adjusted significance level $α'$ for marginal tests that controls the overall Type I error rate at pre-defined $α$. Simulations show that the proposed approach maintains a higher power than existing methods in the settings under investigation. Since the adjusted significance level $α'$ is obtained by controlling the Type I error rate at $α$, one can easily construct the exact $(1 - α)\%$ simultaneous confidence intervals for treatment effects on all endpoints. The proposed approach is illustrated with two real examples.

Differential Operator Method of Finding A Particular Solution to An Ordinary Nonhomogeneous Linear Differential Equation with Constant Coefficients

We systematically introduce the idea of applying differential operator method to find a particular solution of an ordinary nonhomogeneous linear differential equation with constant coefficients when the nonhomogeneous term is a polynomial function, exponential function, sine function, cosine function or any possible product of these functions. In particular, different from the differential operator method introduced in literature, we propose and highlight utilizing the definition of the inverse of differential operator to determine a particular solution. We suggest that this method should be introduced in textbooks and widely used for determining a particular solution of an ordinary nonhomogeneous linear differential equation with constant coefficients in parallel to the method of undetermined coefficients.

Chern-Simons Spinor Electrodynamics in the Light-Cone Gauge

The one-loop quantum corrections of Chern-Simons spinor electrodynamics in the light-cone gauge has been investigated. We have calculated the vacuum polarization tensor, fermionic self-energy and on-shell vertex correction with a hybrid regularization consisting of a higher covariant derivative regularization and dimensional continuation. The Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription is used to handle the spurious light-cone singularity in the gauge field propagator. We then perform the finite renormalization to define the quantum theory. The generation of the parity-even Maxwell term and the arising of anomalous magnetic moment from quantum corrections are reproduced as in the case of a covariant gauge choice. The Ward identities in the light-cone gauge are verified to satisfy explicitly. Further, we have found the light-cone vector dependent sector of local quantum effective action for the fermion is explicitly gauge invariant, and hence the covariance of $S$-matrix elements of the theory can be achieved.
