Time-reversed Shannon entropy as a chaos indicator for non-integrable systems

We propose a novel chaos indicator -- time-reversed Shannon entropy (TRSE) -- that leverages the interplay between time-reversal symmetry breaking and information entropy in curved spacetimes. By quantifying statistical discrepancies between forward and backward temporal evolution of particle orbits, TRSE robustly distinguishes chaotic from regular dynamics in non-integrable systems. In contrast, integrable systems exhibit stable, symmetric probability distributions preserved by conserved quantities such as the Carter constant. We validate the method through high-precision numerical simulations in both Kerr and Schwarzschild-Melvin black hole geometries, evolving trajectories forward and backward in time. Furthermore, we refine our previously introduced particle-pair mutual information (MIPP) and perform comprehensive parameter-space scans, revealing a strong quantitative agreement between MIPP and TRSE. The two indicators emerge as complementary probes of chaos: TRSE captures symmetry breaking in orbital evolution, while MIPP measures statistical correlations. Together, they establish a unified framework for diagnosing chaos in general relativistic systems, paving a new path to understand the fundamental nature of chaos in non-integrable systems.

Chaotic dynamics of charged particles near weakly magnetized black holes in Einstein-ModMax Theory

This paper presents a systematic study of the chaotic dynamics of charged test particles around purely magnetically charged black holes immersed in a uniform external magnetic field within the framework of Einstein-ModMax theory. By constructing an explicit symplectic integrator, we obtain high-precision numerical solutions of the equations of motion. Combining the observational constraints from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) shadow images, we further restrict the parameter ranges of the model. We apply Shannon entropy and MIPP (mutual information for particle pairs) as effective indicators to identify the chaotic behavior of charged test particles in the spacetime of this black hole. Numerical results indicate that these indicators can clearly distinguish between regular and chaotic motion of orbits in strong gravitational field systems. Further analysis reveals that, compared to the key conserved quantities that determine the global dynamical behavior of the system -- energy $E$ and angular momentum $L$, the sensitivity of the system parameters $e^{-ν}$ and $Q_{m}$ to transitions in the orbital dynamical states is significantly reduced. This study provides a new perspective for a deeper understanding of the characterization and evolution mechanisms of chaotic dynamics in strong gravitational fields.

OCTOPUS: A Versatile, User-Friendly, and Extensible Public Code for General-Relativistic Ray-Tracing in Spherically Symmetric and Static Spacetimes

This paper presents OCTOPUS, a relativistic ray-tracing algorithm developed within a Fortran-based, OpenMP-accelerated framework, designed for asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric curved spacetimes. The code efficiently and accurately computes key relativistic features -- including the black hole event horizon, photon rings, critical curves, and innermost stable circular orbits -- and simulates black hole shadows, redshift factor distributions, accretion disk images, toroidal images, as well as gravitational lensing, light curves, and gravitational radiation from hot-spots. OCTOPUS provides an automated, modular solution for qualitative studies of black hole observables and multi-messenger correlations between electromagnetic and gravitational signals in curved spacetime. Its implementation requires only the metric potential and its first-, second-, and third-order radial derivatives as input, ensuring low user barriers while remaining highly extensible and adaptable. Using a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a Dehnen-type dark matter halo, we thoroughly validate the algorithm's precision, efficiency, and functionality, and investigate how dark matter halo parameters affect observational signatures. Our results demonstrate that increasing the scale and density of the dark matter halo strengthens the spacetime's gravitational field, an effect clearly reflected in black hole images and supported by hot-spot light curve signatures. A future version of OCTOPUS, with expanded capabilities for axisymmetric spacetimes, is planned for release.

Shadows of three black holes in static equilibrium configuration

In this paper, we employ a ray-tracing algorithm to simulate the shadows of three equal-mass black holes in static equilibrium across a wide parameter space. We find that the shadows consist of a larger primary shadow and several distorted, eyebrow-like secondary shadows. The boundaries of these profiles exhibit self-similar fractal structures, which can be attributed to the photon chaotic scattering. In certain parameter spaces, we also observe the ring-like shadows, with the ring diameter associated with the spacing of black holes. Furthermore, when the black holes approach each other sufficiently, their shadows can merge into a standard disk, suggesting a shadow degeneracy between closely arranged triple black holes and a single massive, spherically symmetric black hole. The shadow features of the triple black holes revealed in this study have potential implications for analyzing the shadow formation mechanisms, as well as the gravitational lensing during the merger and inspiral of black holes.

Screen chaotic motion by Shannon entropy in curved spacetimes

We find a novel characteristic for chaotic motion by introducing Shannon entropy for periodic orbits, quasiperiodic orbits, and chaotic orbits. We compare our approach with the previous methods including Poincaré Section, Lyapunov exponent, Fast Lyapunov Indicator, Recurrence plots(Rps), and Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) for orbits around black hole immersed in magnetic fields, and show that they agree with each other quite well. The approach of Shannon entropy is intuitively clear, and theoretically reasonable since it becomes larger and larger form a periodic orbit to chaotic orbit. We demonstrate that Shannon entropy can be a powerful probe to distinguish between chaotic and regular orbits in different spacetimes, and reversely may lead to a new road to define the entropy for a single orbit in phase space, and to find more fundamental relations between thermodynamics and dynamics.

Mutual Information for particle pair and its application to diagnose Chaos in Curved Spacetime

We propose the concept of mutual information for particle pair (MIPP) in curved spacetime, and show that MIPP has potential to be a proper chaos indicator. We tested this method in the Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetime and compared it with the fast Lyapunov indicator. The results show that the MIPP effectively identify orbital states and demonstrates prominent performance in recognizing transitions between orbital states. Our result show that information theory significantly deepen our understanding of dynamics of few-body system.

Electromagnetic field and chaotic charged-particle motion around hairy black holes in Horndeski gravity

The Wald vector potential is an exact solution of the source-less Maxwell equations regarding an electromagnetic field of a vacuum uncharged black hole like the Kerr background black hole in an asymptotically uniform magnetic field. However, it is not if the black hole is a nonvacuum solution in a theory of modified gravity with extra fields or a charged Kerr-Newman spacetime. To satisfy the source-less Maxwell equations in this case, the Wald vector potential must be modified and generalized appropriately. Following this idea, we derive an expression for the vector potential of an electromagnetic field surrounding a hairy black hole in the Horndeski modified gravity theory. Explicit symplectic integrators with excellent long-term behaviour are used to simulate the motion of charged particles around the hairy black hole immersed in the external magnetic field. The recurrence plot method based on the recurrence quantification analysis uses diagonal structures parallel to the main diagonal to show regular dynamics, but adopts no diagonal structures to indicate chaotic dynamics. The method is efficient to detect chaos from order in the curved spacetime, as the Poincare map and the fast Lyapunov indicator are.

Integrability of Kerr-Newman spacetime with cloud strings, quintessence and electromagnetic field

The dynamics of charged particles moving around a Kerr-Newman black hole surrounded by cloud strings, quintessence and electromagnetic field is integrable due to the presence of a fourth constant of motion like the Carter constant. The fourth motion constant and the axial-symmetry of the spacetime give a chance to the existence of radial effective potentials with stable circular orbits in two-dimensional planes, such as the equatorial plane and other nonequatorial planes. They also give a possibility of the presence of radial effective potentials with stable spherical orbits in the three-dimensional space. The dynamical parameters play important roles in changing the graphs of the effective potentials. In addition, variations of these parameters affect the presence or absence of stable circular orbits, innermost stable circular orbits, stable spherical orbits and marginally stable spherical orbits. They also affect the radii of the stable circular or spherical orbits. It is numerically shown that the stable circular orbits and innermost stable circular orbits can exist not only in the equatorial plane but also in the nonequatorial planes. Several stable spherical orbits and marginally stable spherical orbits are numerically confirmed, too. In particular, there are some stable spherical orbits and marginally stable spherical orbits with vanishing angular momenta for covering whole the range of the latitudinal coordinate.

Chaos in a Magnetized Modified Gravity Schwarzschild Spacetime

Based on the scalar-tensor-vector modified gravitational theory, a modified gravity Schwarzschild black hole solution has been given in the existing literature. Such a black hole spacetime is obtained through the inclusion of a modified gravity coupling parameter, which corresponds to the modified gravitational constant and the black hole charge. In this sense, the modified gravity parameter acts as not only an enhanced gravitational effect but also a gravitational repulsive force contribution to a test particle moving around the black hole. Because the modified Schwarzschild spacetime is static spherical symmetric, it is integrable. However, the spherical symmetry and the integrability are destroyed when the black hole is immersed in an external asymptotic uniform magnetic field and the particle is charged. Although the magnetized modified Schwarzschild spacetime is nonintegrable and inseparable, it allows for the application of explicit symplectic integrators when its Hamiltonian is split into five explicitly integrable parts. Taking one of the proposed explicit symplectic integrators and the techniques of Poincare sections and fast Lyapunov indicators as numerical tools, we show that the charged particle can do chaotic motions under some circumstances. Chaos is strengthened with an increase of the modified gravity parameter from the global phase space structures. There are similar results when the magnetic field parameter and the particle energy increase. However, an increase of the particle angular momentum weakens the strength of chaos.
