Microcomb-driven large-scale fully connected quantum network

Fully connected quantum networks enable simultaneously connecting every user to every other user and are the most versatile and robust networking architecture. However, the scalability of such networks remains great challenge for practical applications. Here we construct a large-scale fully connected quantum network founded on two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference, where user-to-user security is guaranteed even with untrusted network provider. Using integrated soliton microcomb (SMC) and photonic encoding chips, we realize precise massive parallel frequency generation and locking, high-visibility HOM interferences and measurement-device-independent (MDI) quantum key distribution. The proposed architecture enables a 200-user fully connected quantum network over 200 kilometers with strict information-theoretic security via untrusted network provider. The implemented networking architecture paves the way for realizing large-scale fully connected MDI quantum networks across metropolitan and intercity regions.

Efficient Characterizations of Multiphoton States with an Ultra-thin Optical Device

Metasurface enables the generation and manipulation of multiphoton entanglement with flat optics, providing a more efficient platform for large-scale photonic quantum information processing. Here, we show that a single metasurface optical device would allow more efficient characterizations of multiphoton entangled states, such as shadow tomography, which generally requires fast and complicated control of optical setups to perform information-complete measurements, a demanding task using conventional optics. The compact and stable device here allows implementations of general positive observable value measures with a reduced sample complexity and significantly alleviates the experimental complexity to implement shadow tomography. Integrating self-learning and calibration algorithms, we observe notable advantages in the reconstruction of multiphoton entanglement, including using fewer measurements, having higher accuracy, and being robust against experimental imperfections. Our work unveils the feasibility of metasurface as a favorable integrated optical device for efficient characterization of multiphoton entanglement, and sheds light on scalable photonic quantum technologies with ultra-thin optical devices.

Ultra-high-linearity integrated lithium niobate electro-optic modulators

Integrated lithium niobate (LN) photonics is a promising platform for future chip-scale microwave photonics systems owing to its unique electro-optic properties, low optical loss and excellent scalability. A key enabler for such systems is a highly linear electro-optic modulator that could faithfully covert analog electrical signals into optical signals. In this work, we demonstrate a monolithic integrated LN modulator with an ultrahigh spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 120.04 dB Hz4/5 at 1 GHz, using a ring-assisted Mach-Zehnder interferometer configuration. The excellent synergy between the intrinsically linear electro-optic response of LN and an optimized linearization strategy allows us to fully suppress the cubic terms of third-order intermodulation distortions (IMD3) without active feedback controls, leading to ~ 20 dB improvement over previous results in the thin-film LN platform. Our ultra-high-linearity LN modulators could become a core building block for future large-scale functional microwave photonic integrated circuits, by further integration with other high-performance components like low-loss delay lines, tunable filters and phase shifters available on the LN platform.

Quantum key distribution with dissipative Kerr soliton generated by on-chip microresonators

Quantum key distribution (QKD) can distribute symmetric key bits between remote legitimate users with the guarantee of quantum mechanics principles. For practical applications, the compact and robust photonic components for QKD are essential, and there are increasing attention to integrate the source, detector and modulators on a photonic chip. However, the massive and parallel QKD based on wavelength multiplexing are still challenge, due to the limited coherent light sources on the chip. Here, we introduce the Kerr dissipative soliton in a microresonator, which provides the locked coherent frequency comb with 49GHz frequency spacing, for QKD. We demonstrate the parallel QKD by demulplexing the coherent comb lines form the soliton, and showing the potential of Gbps secret key rate if the hundreds of channels covering C and L bands are fully exploited. The demonstrated soliton based QKD architecture are compatible with the efforts of quantum photonic integrated circuits, which are compact, robust and low-cost, and provides a competitive platform of practical QKD chip.

Long distance measurement using single soliton microcomb

Dispersive interferometry (DPI) takes a major interest in optical frequency comb (OFC) based long distance laser-based light detection and ranging (LIDAR) for the merits of strong anti-interference ability and long coherent length. However, the mismatch between the repetition rate of OFC and the resolution of optical spectrum acquisition system induces a large dead-zone which is a major obstacle for practical applications. Here, a new DPI LIDAR on the strength of high-repetition-rate soliton microcomb is demonstrated, which reaches a minimum Allan deviation of 27 nm for an outdoor 1179 m ranging experiment. The proposed scheme approaches a compact, high-accuracy, and none-dead-zone long distance ranging system, opening up new opportunities for emerging applications of frontier scientific researches and advanced manufacturing.

An Antenna Array Initial Condition Calibration Method for Integrated Optical Phased Array

This paper presents a modified rotating element electric field vector (modified REV) method to calibrate the antenna array initial condition of an optical phased array (OPA) device. The new method follows a similar sequential individual antenna phase calibration process while it modifies the algorithm to avoid possible π phase error in traditional REV when large initial phase distribution and finite optical power measurement accuracy present. We show that the method produces statistically more accurate and predictable calibration result which is highly desired in practice.

Compact optical phased array using a serial grating antenna design

We propose an on-chip Si photonics optical phased array based on a serial grating design which eliminates the use of directional couplers in previous designs. It significantly reduces overall phased array size especially when the number of the antenna is small which is often demanded in practice. The simulation results show our design reduces overall phased array size, increases optical power utilization while maintains comparable far field performance.

Deterministic generation and switching of dissipative Kerr soliton in a thermally controlled micro-resonator

Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) in the high-Q micro-resonator corresponds to self-organized short pulse in time domain via double balance between dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity, as well as cavity loss and parametric gain. In this paper, we first experimentally demonstrate deterministic generation and switching of DKSs in a thermally controlled micro-ring resonator based on high-index doped silica glass platform. In our scheme, an auxiliary laser is introduced to timely balance the intra-cavity heat fluctuation. By decreasing the operating temperature through a thermo-electric cooler, soliton crystal is firstly generated, then increasing the temperature, DKSs switching and single soliton are robustly accessed, which is independent of the tuning speed. During the switching process, varieties of DKSs are identified by tens of featured discrete soliton-steps, which is favorable for study of on-chip soliton interactions and nonlinear applications.
