Reconfigurable all-optical inference via tunable second-harmonic generation and spin-orbit coupling cascade

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is widely exploited as a fundamental mechanism for generating orbital angular momentum (OAM); however, conventional approaches typically lack flexibility and tunability. Here, we introduce a continuously tunable second-harmonic generation (SHG)-SOC cascade mechanism modulated by a spatially movable nonlinear crystal. Under linearly polarized excitation, the SHG-SOC cascade engages synchronously with both degenerate and nondegenerate SHG processes, thereby expanding the OAM spectrum and significantly enhancing the information density and feature-mapping capacity of the optical field. Moreover, the OAM spectral distribution can be continuously reconfigured simply by translating the nonlinear crystal. This deterministic physical evolution, which maps simple OAM modes onto a tunable high-dimensional OAM space, is mathematically analogous to the high-dimensional feature expansion performed by a kernel function of a support vector machine (SVM) in machine learning. Such dimensional expansion can project linearly inseparable input data into a high-dimensional space where they become linearly separable. Exploiting this physics-algorithm analogy, we develop a reconfigurable all-optical inference platform. As a proof of concept, we successfully perform classification tasks, including the recognition of Iris flowers and Palmer penguins. This work establishes a scalable, physically reconfigurable architecture for high-dimensional all-optical computing and neuromorphic photonics.

Versatile Lithium Niobate Platform for Photoacoustic/Thermoelastic Gas Sensing and Photodetection

We present a lithium niobate multi-functional platform (LN-MFP) that integrates photoacoustic and thermoelastic spectroscopy with photodetection on a single chip. Utilizing LN's piezoelectric and thermoelastic properties and an optimized design, it achieves high sensitivity across visible to long-wave infrared wavelengths. We demonstrate photoacoustic/thermoelastic gas sensing and photodetection using LN-MFP. The compact, integrated system with custom packaging and direct wire bonding reduces complexity and size, enabling portable, scalable sensing for environmental and diagnostic applications.

Lithium niobate-enhanced laser photoacoustic spectroscopy

In this paper, the photoacoustic spectroscopy technique based on lithium niobate crystals is initially reported, to our knowledge. A novel dual-cantilever tuning fork structure and new electrodes have been designed using Y-cut 128° blackened lithium niobate wafers. The tuning fork, with a resonant frequency of only 10.46 kHz and a prong gap of 1 mm, is engineered to achieve superior performance in photoacoustic spectroscopy. In the demonstration experiment, acetylene was detected using a 1.53 um semiconductor laser, achieving a detection limit of about 9 ppb within a one-second integration time.

Optical anapole mode in nanostructured lithium niobate for enhancing second harmonic generation

Second harmonic generation (SHG) with a material of large transparency is an attractive way of generating coherent light sources at exotic wavelength range such as VUV, UV and visible light. It is of critical importance to improve nonlinear conversion efficiency in order to find practical applications in quantum light source and high resolution nonlinear microscopy, etc. Here an enhanced SHG with conversion efficiency up to the order of 0.01% at SH wavelength of 282 nm under 11 GW/cm2 pump power via the excitation of anapole in lithium niobite (LiNbO3, or LN) nanodisk through the dominating d33 nonlinear coefficient is investigated. The anapole has advantages of strongly suppressing far-field scattering and well-confined internal field which helps to boost the nonlinear conversion. Anapoles in LN nanodisk is facilitated by high index contrast between LN and substrate with properties of near-zero-index via hyperbolic metamaterial structure design. By tailoring the multi-layers structure of hyperbolic metamaterials, the anapole excitation wavelength can be tuned at different wavelengths. It indicates that an enhanced SHG can be achieved at a wide range of pump light wavelengths via different design of the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) hyperbolic metamaterials substrates. The proposed nanostructure in this work might hold significances for the enhanced light-matter interactions at the nanoscale such as integrated optics.

Casimir Thrust Force on a Rotating Chiral Particle

In the work, the thermal and vacuum fluctuation is predicted capable of generating a Casimir thrust force on a rotating chiral particle, which will push or pull the particle along the rotation axis. The Casimir thrust force comes from two origins: i) the rotation-induced symmetry-breaking in the vacuum and thermal fluctuation and ii) the chiral cross-coupling between electric and magnetic fields and dipoles, which can convert the vacuum spin angular momentum (SAM) to the vacuum force. Using the fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT), we derive the analytical expressions for the vacuum thrust force in dipolar approximation and the dependences of the force on rotation frequency, temperature and material optical properties are investigated. The work reveals a new mechanism to generate a vacuum force, which opens a new way to exploit zero-point energy of vacuum.
