Learning from Mistakes: Using Mis-predictions as Harm Alerts in Language Pre-Training

Fitting complex patterns in the training data, such as reasoning and commonsense, is a key challenge for language pre-training. According to recent studies and our empirical observations, one possible reason is that some easy-to-fit patterns in the training data, such as frequently co-occurring word combinations, dominate and harm pre-training, making it hard for the model to fit more complex information. We argue that mis-predictions can help locate such dominating patterns that harm language understanding. When a mis-prediction occurs, there should be frequently co-occurring patterns with the mis-predicted word fitted by the model that lead to the mis-prediction. If we can add regularization to train the model to rely less on such dominating patterns when a mis-prediction occurs and focus more on the rest more subtle patterns, more information can be efficiently fitted at pre-training. Following this motivation, we propose a new language pre-training method, Mis-Predictions as Harm Alerts (MPA). In MPA, when a mis-prediction occurs during pre-training, we use its co-occurrence information to guide several heads of the self-attention modules. Some self-attention heads in the Transformer modules are optimized to assign lower attention weights to the words in the input sentence that frequently co-occur with the mis-prediction while assigning higher weights to the other words. By doing so, the Transformer model is trained to rely less on the dominating frequently co-occurring patterns with mis-predictions while focus more on the rest more complex information when mis-predictions occur. Our experiments show that MPA expedites the pre-training of BERT and ELECTRA and improves their performances on downstream tasks.

Transport anomalies in the layered compound BaPt4Se6

We report a layered ternary selenide BaPt4Se6 featuring sesqui-selenide Pt2Se3 layers sandwiched by Ba atoms. The Pt2Se3 layers in this compound can be derived from the Dirac-semimetal PtSe2 phase with Se vacancies that form a honeycomb structure. This structure results in a Pt (VI) and Pt (II) mixed-valence compound with both PtSe6 octahedra and PtSe4 square net coordination configurations. Temperature dependent electrical transport measurements suggest two distinct anomalies: a resistivity crossover, mimic to the metal-insulator (M-I) transition at ~150K, and a resistivity plateau at temperatures below 10K. The resistivity crossover is not associated with any structural, magnetic or charge order modulated phase transitions. Magnetoresistivity, Hall and heat capacity measurements concurrently suggest an existing hidden state below 5K in this system. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal a metallic state and no dramatic reconstruction of the electronic structure up to 200K.

Controllable Abstractive Dialogue Summarization with Sketch Supervision

In this paper, we aim to improve abstractive dialogue summarization quality and, at the same time, enable granularity control. Our model has two primary components and stages: 1) a two-stage generation strategy that generates a preliminary summary sketch serving as the basis for the final summary. This summary sketch provides a weakly supervised signal in the form of pseudo-labeled interrogative pronoun categories and key phrases extracted using a constituency parser. 2) A simple strategy to control the granularity of the final summary, in that our model can automatically determine or control the number of generated summary sentences for a given dialogue by predicting and highlighting different text spans from the source text. Our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on the largest dialogue summarization corpus SAMSum, with as high as 50.79 in ROUGE-L score. In addition, we conduct a case study and show competitive human evaluation results and controllability to human-annotated summaries.

New polymorphic phase and rich phase diagram in the PdSe2-xTex system

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the PdSe2-xTex system. With increasing Te fraction, structural evolutions, first from an orthorhombic phase (space group Pbca) to a monoclinic phase (space group C2/c) and then to a trigonal phase (space group P-3m1), are observed accompanied with clearly distinct electrical transport behavior. The monoclinic phase (C2/c) is a completely new polymorphic phase and is discovered within a narrow range of Te composition (0.3 \leq x \leq 0.8). This phase has a different packing sequence from all known transition metal dichalcogenides to date. Electronic calculations and detailed transport analysis of the new polymorphic PdSe1.3Te0.7 phase are presented. In the trigonal phase region, superconductivity with enhanced critical temperature is also observed within a narrow range of Te content (1.0 \leq x \leq 1.2). The rich phase diagram, new polymorphic structure as well as abnormally enhanced superconductivity could further stimulate more interest to explore new types of polymorphs and investigate their transport and electronic properties in the transition metal dichalcogenides family that are of significant interest.

Enhanced Superconductivity in the Se-substituted 1T-PdTe$_2$

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide PdTe$_2$ recently attracts much attention due to its phase coexistence of type-II Dirac semimetal and type-I superconductivity. Here we report a 67 % enhancement of superconducting transition temperature in the 1T-PdSeTe in comparison to that of PdTe2 through partial substitution of Te atoms by Se. The superconductivity has been unambiguously confirmed by the magnetization, resistivity and specific heat measurements. 1T-PdSeTe shows type-II superconductivity with large anisotropy and non-bulk superconductivity nature with volume fraction ~ 20 % estimated from magnetic and heat capacity measurements. 1T-PdSeTe expands the family of superconducting transition metal dichalcogenides and thus provides additional insights for understanding superconductivity and topological physics in the 1T-PdTe$_2$ system

Discriminative Nearest Neighbor Few-Shot Intent Detection by Transferring Natural Language Inference

Intent detection is one of the core components of goal-oriented dialog systems, and detecting out-of-scope (OOS) intents is also a practically important skill. Few-shot learning is attracting much attention to mitigate data scarcity, but OOS detection becomes even more challenging. In this paper, we present a simple yet effective approach, discriminative nearest neighbor classification with deep self-attention. Unlike softmax classifiers, we leverage BERT-style pairwise encoding to train a binary classifier that estimates the best matched training example for a user input. We propose to boost the discriminative ability by transferring a natural language inference (NLI) model. Our extensive experiments on a large-scale multi-domain intent detection task show that our method achieves more stable and accurate in-domain and OOS detection accuracy than RoBERTa-based classifiers and embedding-based nearest neighbor approaches. More notably, the NLI transfer enables our 10-shot model to perform competitively with 50-shot or even full-shot classifiers, while we can keep the inference time constant by leveraging a faster embedding retrieval model.

Canted Antiferromagnetism in the Quasi-1D Iron Chalcogenide BaFe$_{2}$Se$_{4}$

We report the synthesis and physical properties studies of quais-1D iron chalcogenide $\rm BaFe_2Se_4$ which shares the $\rm FeSe_4$ tetrahedra building motif commonly seen in the iron chalcogenide superconductors. A high-quality polycrystalline sample was achieved by solid-state reaction method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and neutron diffraction measurements. $\rm BaFe_2Se_4$ is a narrow gap semiconductor that magnetically orders at $\sim$ 310 K. Both neutron powder diffraction results and isothermal M-H loops suggest a canted antiferromagnetic structure where Fe sublattice are antiferromagnetically ordered along the c-axis quasi-1D chain direction, resulting in a net ferromagnetic moment in the perpendicular direction along the a-axis with tilted angle of 18.7$^\circ$ towards the b-axis.

AGN feedback in the FR II galaxy 3C 220.1

We present results from a deep (174 ks) Chandra observation of the FR-II radio galaxy 3C 220.1, the central brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of a $kT \sim$ 4 keV cluster at $z=0.61$. The temperature of the hot cluster medium drops from $\sim5.9$ keV to $\sim3.9$ keV at $\sim$ 35 kpc radius, while the temperature at smaller radii may be substantially lower. The central active galactic nucleus (AGN) outshines the whole cluster in X-rays, with a bolometric luminosity of $2.0\times10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$ ($\sim10$% of the Eddington rate). The system shows a pair of potential X-ray cavities $\sim35$ kpc east and west of the nucleus. The cavity power is estimated within the range of $1.0\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $1.7\times10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$, from different methods. The X-ray enhancements in the radio lobes could be due to inverse Compton emission, with a total 2-10 keV luminosity of $\sim8.0\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We compare 3C 220.1 with other cluster BCGs, including Cygnus A, as there are few BCGs in rich clusters hosting an FR-II galaxy. We also summarize the jet power of FR-II galaxies from different methods. The comparison suggests that the cavity power of FR-II galaxies likely under-estimates the jet power. The properties of 3C 220.1 suggest that it is at the transition stage from quasar-mode feedback to radio-mode feedback.

A merger shock in Abell 1367

Multi-wavelength observations show that Abell 1367 (A1367) is a dynamically young cluster, with at least two subclusters merging along the SE-NW direction. With the wide-field XMM-Newton mosaic of A1367, we discover a previously unknown merger shock at the NW edge of the cluster. We estimate the shock Mach number from the density and temperature jumps as $M_ρ=1.21\pm0.08$ and $M_T=1.60\pm0.07$, respectively. This shock region also corresponds to a radio relic discovered with the VLA and GBT, which could be produced by the shock re-acceleration of pre-existing seed relativistic electrons. We suggest that some of the seed relativistic electrons originate from late-type, star-forming galaxies in this region.

AGN Feedback in Galaxy Group 3C 88: Cavities, Shock and Jet Reorientation

We present results from the deep Chandra observation (105 ksec), together with new Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and Very Large Array data of the AGN outburst in the radio-loud galaxy group 3C 88. The system shows a prominent X-ray cavity on the eastern side with a diameter of $\sim$50 kpc at $\sim28$ kpc from the nucleus. The total enthalpy of the cavity is $3.8\times10^{58}$ erg and the average power required to inflate the X-ray bubble is $\sim2.0\times10^{43}$ erg s^-1. From surface brightness profiles we detect a shock with a Mach number of $M=1.4\pm0.2$, consistent with the value obtained from temperature jump. The shock energy is estimated to be $1.9\times10^{59}$ erg. The size and total enthalpy of the cavity in 3C 88 are the largest known in galaxy groups, as well as the shock energy. The eastern X-ray cavity is not aligned with the radio jet axis. This factor, combined with the radio morphology, strongly suggests jet reorientation in the last tens of million years. The bright rim and arm features surrounding the cavity show metallicity enhancement, suggesting they originated as high metallicity gas from the group center, lifted by the rising X-ray bubbles. Our Chandra study of 3C 88 also reveals that galaxy groups with powerful radio AGN can have high cavity power, although deep X-ray observations are typically required to confirm the cavities in galaxy groups.

Discovery of a new nontoxic cuprate superconducting system Ga-Ba-Ca-Cu-O

Superconductivity is observed in a new nontoxic cuprate system Ga-Ba-Ca-Cu-O, with Tc = 82K for GaBa2Ca5Cu6O14+δ (Ga-1256) and Tc = 116K probably for GaBa2Ca3Cu4O10+δ (Ga-1234) or GaBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ (Ga-1223), respectively. All compounds are fabricated by solid state reaction method under high pressure and high temperature. Samples are characterized by resistivity, magnetization and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The temperature dependence of magnetization measured in both zero-field-cooled and field-cooled processes on one sample (S1) shows two superconducting transitions at about 82K and 113K. The estimated shielding fraction for the phase with Tc of 82K is about 67%, while the fraction for another phase with Tc of 113K is quite small. The XRD Rietveld refinement for S1 indicates two main phases existing in the sample, Ga-1256 with fraction of about 58% and non-superconducting Ca0.85CuO2 with fraction of about 42%, respectively. Thus, we can conclude the superconducting phase with transition temperature of 82K is due to Ga-1256. The resistivity measurement also confirms the superconductivity for S1, and the resistivity reaches zero at about 82K. The temperature dependence of magnetization for another sample (S2) shows much higher superconducting shielding fraction for the phase with Tc of 116K, which may be a promising prospective for the synthesis of Ga-1234 or Ga-1223 phase.

Unprecedented High Irreversibility Line in Nontoxic Cuprate Superconductor (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4O11+delta

One of the key factors limiting the high power applications for a type-II superconductor is the irreversibility line Hirr(T) which reflects the very boundary of resistive dissipation in the phase diagram of magnetic field versus temperature. In cuprate family, the Y-, Bi-, Hg- and Tl-based systems have superconducting transition temperatures exceeding the liquid nitrogen boiling temperature (~77K). However, the toxic elements Hg and Tl in the latter two systems strongly constrain the possible applications. The Bi-based (2223) system is nontoxic, but the irreversibility magnetic field is strongly suppressed in the liquid nitrogen temperature region. For this purpose, the best perspective so far is relying on the YBa2Cu3O7 (Tc~90 K) system which is nontoxic and has a relatively high irreversibility magnetic field. Here we report the study of a nontoxic superconductor (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4O11+δ with Tc = 116K. It is found that the irreversibility magnetic field is unprecedentedly high among all superconductors and it thus provides a great potential of applications in the liquid nitrogen temperature region.

Magnetization of potassium doped p-terphenyl and p-quaterphenyl by high pressure synthesis

By using high pressure synthesis method, we have fabricated the potassium doped para-terphenyl. The temperature dependence of magnetization measured in both zero-field-cooled and field-cooled processes shows step like transitions at about 125 K. This confirms earlier report about the possible superconductivity like transition in the same system. However, the magnetization hysteresis loop exhibits a weak ferromagnetic background. After removing this ferromagnetic background, a Meissner effect like magnetic shielding can be found. A simple estimate on the diamagnetization of this step tells that the diamagnetic volume is only about 0.0427% at low temperatures, if we assume the penetration depth is much smaller than the size of possible superconducting grains. This magnetization transition does not shift with magnetic field but is suppressed and becomes almost invisible above 1.0 T. The resistivity measurements are failed because of an extremely large resistance. By using the same method, we also fabricated the potassium doped para-quaterphenyl. A similar step like transition at about 125 K was also observed by magnetization measurement. Since there is an unknown positive background and the diamagnetic volume is too small, it is insufficient to conclude that this step is derived from superconductivity although it looks like.

Evidence for a very low-column density hole in the Galactic halo in the direction of the high latitude molecular cloud MBM 16

Shadow observations are the only way to observe emission from the galactic halo (GH) and/or the circumgalactic medium (CGM) free of any foreground contamination from local hot bubble (LHB) and solar wind charge exchange (SWCX). We analyzed data from a shadow observation in the direction of the high latitude, neutral hydrogen cloud MBM 16 with \Suzaku. We found that all emission can be accounted for by foreground emission from LHB and SWCX, plus power law emission associated with unresolved point sources. The GH/CGM in the direction of MBM 16 is negligible or inexistent in our observation, with upper limits on the emission measure of 9.5x10^{-4} pc cm^{-6} (90% C.L.), at the lowest end of current estimates.

Efficient Certificateless Signcryption Tag-KEMs for Resource-constrained Devices

Efficient certificateless one-pass session key establishment protocols can be constructed from key encapsulation mechanisms (KEMs) by making use of tags and signcryption schemes. The resulting primitives are referred to as Certificateless Signcryption Tag Key Encapsulation Mechanisms (CLSC-TKEMs). In this paper we propose two novel CLSC-TKEM protocols, the first, named LSW-CLSC-TKEM, makes use of the signature scheme of Liu et al., the second, named DKTUTS-CLSC-TKEM, is based on the direct key transport using a timestamp (DKTUTS) protocol first described by Zheng. In order to achieve greater efficiency both schemes are instantiated on elliptic curves without making use of pairings and are therefore good candidates for deployment on resource constrained devices.

Chi-square and Poissonian Data: Biases Even in the High-Count Regime and How to Avoid them

We demonstrate that two approximations to the chi^2 statistic as popularly employed by observational astronomers for fitting Poisson-distributed data can give rise to intrinsically biased model parameter estimates, even in the high counts regime, unless care is taken over the parameterization of the problem. For a small number of problems, previous studies have shown that the fractional bias introduced by these approximations is often small when the counts are high. However, we show that for a broad class of problem, unless the number of data bins is far smaller than \sqrt{N_c}, where N_c is the total number of counts in the dataset, the bias will still likely be comparable to, or even exceed, the statistical error. Conversely, we find that fits using Cash's C-statistic give comparatively unbiased parameter estimates when the counts are high. Taking into account their well-known problems in the low count regime, we conclude that these approximate chi^2 methods should not routinely be used for fitting an arbitrary, parameterized model to Poisson-distributed data, irrespective of the number of counts per bin, and instead the C-statistic should be adopted. We discuss several practical aspects of using the C-statistic in modelling real data. We illustrate the bias for two specific problems, measuring the count-rate from a lightcurve and obtaining the temperature of a thermal plasma from its X-ray spectrum measured with the Chandra X-ray observatory. In the context of X-ray astronomy, we argue the bias could give rise to systematically mis-calibrated satellites and a ~5-10% shift in galaxy cluster scaling relations.
