Study of a Novel Capacitive Pressure Sensor Using Spiral Comb Electrodes

For traditional capacitive pressure sensors, high nonlinearity and poor sensitivity greatly limited their sensing applications. Hence, an innovative design of capacitors based on spiral comb electrodes is proposed for high-sensitivity pressure detection in this work. Compared to traditional capacitive pressure sensors with straight plate electrodes, the proposed sensor with the spiral electrodes increases the overlap areas of electrodes sufficiently, the pressure sensitivity can thus be greatly improved. Moreover, the capacitance variation of the proposed sensor is dominated by the change of the overlap area of the electrodes rather than the electrode's distance, the linearity can also thus be improved to higher than 0.99. Theoretical analysis and COMSOL-based finite element simulation have been implemented for principle verification and performance optimization. Simulation results show that the proposed design has a mechanical sensitivity of 1.5x10-4 m/Pa, capacitive sensitivity of 1.10 aF/Pa, and nonlinear error of 3.63%, respectively, at the pressure range from 0 to 30 kPa. An equivalent experiment has been further carried out for verification. Experimental results also show that both the sensitivity and linearity of capacitive pressure sensors with spiral electrodes are higher than those with straight electrodes. This work not only provides a new avenue for capacitor design, but also can be applied to high-sensitivity pressure detection.

Generalized Averaging Method for Power Electronics Modeling from DC to above Half the Switching Frequency

Modeling power electronic converters at frequencies close to or above half the switching frequency has been difficult due to the time-variant and discontinuous switching actions. This paper uses the properties of moving Fourier coefficients to develop the generalized averaging method, breaking though the limit of half the switching frequency. The paper also proposes the generalized average model for various switching signals, including pulse-width modulation (PWM), phase-shift modulation, pulse-frequency modulation (PFM), and state-dependent switching signals, so that circuits and modulators/controllers can be modeled separately and combined flexibly. Using the Laplace transform of moving Fourier coefficients, the coupling of signals and their sidebands at different frequencies is clearly described as the coupling of moving Fourier coefficients at the same frequency in a linear time-invariant system framework. The modeling method is applied to a PWM controlled boost converter, a V2 constant on-time controlled buck converter, and a PFM controlled LLC converter, for demonstration and validation. Experimental results of the converters in different operating modes show that the proposed models have higher accuracy than exiting models, especially in the frequency range close to or above half the switching frequency. The developed method can be applied to almost all types of power electronic converters.

STBench: Assessing the Ability of Large Language Models in Spatio-Temporal Analysis

The rapid evolution of large language models (LLMs) holds promise for reforming the methodology of spatio-temporal data mining. However, current works for evaluating the spatio-temporal understanding capability of LLMs are somewhat limited and biased. These works either fail to incorporate the latest language models or only focus on assessing the memorized spatio-temporal knowledge. To address this gap, this paper dissects LLMs' capability of spatio-temporal data into four distinct dimensions: knowledge comprehension, spatio-temporal reasoning, accurate computation, and downstream applications. We curate several natural language question-answer tasks for each category and build the benchmark dataset, namely STBench, containing 13 distinct tasks and over 60,000 QA pairs. Moreover, we have assessed the capabilities of 13 LLMs, such as GPT-4o, Gemma and Mistral. Experimental results reveal that existing LLMs show remarkable performance on knowledge comprehension and spatio-temporal reasoning tasks, with potential for further enhancement on other tasks through in-context learning, chain-of-though prompting, and fine-tuning. The code and datasets of STBench are released on https://github.com/LwbXc/STBench.

Dual-domain Collaborative Denoising for Social Recommendation

Social recommendation leverages social network to complement user-item interaction data for recommendation task, aiming to mitigate the data sparsity issue in recommender systems. However, existing social recommendation methods encounter the following challenge: both social network and interaction data contain substaintial noise, and the propagation of such noise through Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) not only fails to enhance recommendation performance but may also interfere with the model's normal training. Despite the importance of denoising for social network and interaction data, only a limited number of studies have considered the denoising for social network and all of them overlook that for interaction data, hindering the denoising effect and recommendation performance. Based on this, we propose a novel model called Dual-domain Collaborative Denoising for Social Recommendation ($\textbf{DCDSR}$). DCDSR comprises two primary modules: the structure-level collaborative denoising module and the embedding-space collaborative denoising module. In the structure-level collaborative denoising module, information from interaction domain is first employed to guide social network denoising. Subsequently, the denoised social network is used to supervise the denoising for interaction data. The embedding-space collaborative denoising module devotes to resisting the noise cross-domain diffusion problem through contrastive learning with dual-domain embedding collaborative perturbation. Additionally, a novel contrastive learning strategy, named Anchor-InfoNCE, is introduced to better harness the denoising capability of contrastive learning. Evaluating our model on three real-world datasets verifies that DCDSR has a considerable denoising effect, thus outperforms the state-of-the-art social recommendation methods.

Using magnetic dynamics to measure the spin gap in a candidate Kitaev material

Materials potentially hosting Kitaev spin-liquid states are considered crucial for realizing topological quantum computing. However, the intricate nature of spin interactions within these materials complicates the precise measurement of low-energy spin excitations indicative of fractionalized excitations. Using Na$_{2}$Co$_2$TeO$_{6}$ as an example, we study these low-energy spin excitations using the time-resolved resonant elastic x-ray scattering (tr-REXS). Our observations unveil remarkably slow spin dynamics at the magnetic peak, whose recovery timescale is several nanoseconds. This timescale aligns with the extrapolated spin gap of $\sim$ 1 $μ$eV, obtained by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations in the thermodynamic limit. The consistency demonstrates the efficacy of tr-REXS in discerning low-energy spin gaps inaccessible to conventional spectroscopic techniques.

Triple-q order in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ from proximity to hidden-SU(2)-symmetric point

In extended Heisenberg-Kitaev-Gamma-type spin models, hidden-SU(2)-symmetric points are isolated points in parameter space that can be mapped to pure Heisenberg models via nontrivial duality transformations. Such points generically feature quantum degeneracy between conventional single-q and exotic multi-q states. We argue that recent single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering data place the honeycomb magnet Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ in proximity to such a hidden-SU(2)-symmetric point. The low-temperature order is identified as a triple-q state arising from the Néel antiferromagnet with staggered magnetization in the out-of-plane direction via a 4-sublattice duality transformation. This state naturally explains various distinctive features of the magnetic excitation spectrum, including its surprisingly high symmetry and the dispersive low-energy and flat high-energy bands. Our result demonstrates the importance of bond-dependent exchange interactions in cobaltates, and illustrates the intriguing magnetic behavior resulting from them.

A Biologically Plausible Audio-Visual Integration Model for Continual Learning

The problem of catastrophic forgetting has a history of more than 30 years and has not been completely solved yet. Since the human brain has natural ability to perform continual lifelong learning, learning from the brain may provide solutions to this problem. In this paper, we propose a novel biologically plausible audio-visual integration model (AVIM) based on the assumption that the integration of audio and visual perceptual information in the medial temporal lobe during learning is crucial to form concepts and make continual learning possible. Specifically, we use multi-compartment Hodgkin-Huxley neurons to build the model and adopt the calcium-based synaptic tagging and capture as the model's learning rule. Furthermore, we define a new continual learning paradigm to simulate the possible continual learning process in the human brain. We then test our model under this new paradigm. Our experimental results show that the proposed AVIM can achieve state-of-the-art continual learning performance compared with other advanced methods such as OWM, iCaRL and GEM. Moreover, it can generate stable representations of objects during learning. These results support our assumption that concept formation is essential for continuous lifelong learning and suggest the proposed AVIM is a possible concept formation mechanism.

Passive temperature management based on near-field heat transfer

Thermal or temperature management in modern machines has drawn great attentions in the last decades. The waste heat caused during the machine operation is particularly pernicious for the temperature-dependent electronics and may reduce the apparatus performance and lifetime. To control the operation temperature while maintaining high input powers is often a dilemma. Enormous works have been done for the purpose. Here, a passive temperature management method based on near-field heat transfer is introduced, utilizing graphene-plasmon enhanced evanescence wave tunneling. Within a pump power tolerance range of 0.5-7 KW m-2, the device can automatically regulate its thermal emissivity to quickly acquire thermal homeostasis around a designed temperature. It is compact, fully passive and could be incorporated into chip design. The results pave a promising way for passive thermal management that could be used in modern instruments in particular for vacuum environmental applications.

A New Knowledge Gradient-based Method for Constrained Bayesian Optimization

Black-box problems are common in real life like structural design, drug experiments, and machine learning. When optimizing black-box systems, decision-makers always consider multiple performances and give the final decision by comprehensive evaluations. Motivated by such practical needs, we focus on constrained black-box problems where the objective and constraints lack known special structure, and evaluations are expensive and even with noise. We develop a novel constrained Bayesian optimization approach based on the knowledge gradient method ($c-\rm{KG}$). A new acquisition function is proposed to determine the next batch of samples considering optimality and feasibility. An unbiased estimator of the gradient of the new acquisition function is derived to implement the $c-\rm{KG}$ approach.

Spin-orbit phase behaviors of Na2Co2TeO6 at low temperatures

We present a comprehensive study of single crystals of Na2Co2TeO6, a putative Kitaev honeycomb magnet, focusing on its low-temperature phase behaviors. A new thermal phase transition is identified at 31.0 K, below which the system develops a two-dimensional (2D) long-range magnetic order. This order precedes the well-known 3D order below 26.7 K, and is likely driven by strongly anisotropic interactions. Surprisingly, excitations from the 3D order do not support the order's commonly accepted "zigzag" nature, and are instead consistent with a "triple-q" description. The 3D order exerts a fundamental feedback on high-energy excitations that likely involve orbital degrees of freedom, and it remains highly frustrated until a much lower temperature is reached. These findings render Na2Co2TeO6 a spin-orbit entangled frustrated magnet that hosts very rich physics.

Grasping Detection Network with Uncertainty Estimation for Confidence-Driven Semi-Supervised Domain Adaptation

Data-efficient domain adaptation with only a few labelled data is desired for many robotic applications, e.g., in grasping detection, the inference skill learned from a grasping dataset is not universal enough to directly apply on various other daily/industrial applications. This paper presents an approach enabling the easy domain adaptation through a novel grasping detection network with confidence-driven semi-supervised learning, where these two components deeply interact with each other. The proposed grasping detection network specially provides a prediction uncertainty estimation mechanism by leveraging on Feature Pyramid Network (FPN), and the mean-teacher semi-supervised learning utilizes such uncertainty information to emphasizing the consistency loss only for those unlabelled data with high confidence, which we referred it as the confidence-driven mean teacher. This approach largely prevents the student model to learn the incorrect/harmful information from the consistency loss, which speeds up the learning progress and improves the model accuracy. Our results show that the proposed network can achieve high success rate on the Cornell grasping dataset, and for domain adaptation with very limited data, the confidence-driven mean teacher outperforms the original mean teacher and direct training by more than 10% in evaluation loss especially for avoiding the overfitting and model diverging.

Beamforming Optimization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted MIMO: A Sum-Path-Gain Maximization Approach

Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as an appealing technique that enables wireless communications with low hardware cost and low power consumption. In this letter, we consider an IRS-assisted point-to-point multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system, where a source communicates with its destination with the help of an IRS. Our goal is to maximize the spectral efficiency of this system by jointly optimizing the (active) precoding at the source and the (passive) phase shifters (PSs) at the IRS. However, this turns out to be an intractable mixed integer non-convex optimization problem. To circumvent the intractability, we propose a new sum-path-gain maximization (SPGM) criterion to obtain a high-quality and efficient suboptimal solution to this problem. Specifically, the PSs are first designed based on a simplified optimization problem, which aims to maximize the sum-gains of the spatial paths between the source and the destination. Then, a low-complexity alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is utilized to solve this simplified problem. Finally, with the above obtained PSs, the source precoding is derived by performing the singular value decomposition (SVD) on the effective channel between the source and the destination. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve near-optimal performance.

Real-time Image Enhancement for Vision-based Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Navigation in Murky Waters

Classic vision-based navigation solutions, which are utilized in algorithms such as Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), usually fail to work underwater when the water is murky and the quality of the recorded images is low. That is because most SLAM algorithms are feature-based techniques and often it is impossible to extract the matched features from blurry underwater images. To get more useful features, image processing techniques can be used to dehaze the images before they are used in a navigation/localization algorithm. There are many well-developed methods for image restoration, but the degree of enhancement and the resource cost of the methods are different. In this paper, we propose a new visual SLAM, specifically-designed for the underwater environment, using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to enhance the quality of underwater images with underwater image quality evaluation metrics. This procedure increases the efficiency of SLAM and gets a better navigation and localization accuracy. We evaluate the proposed GANs-SLAM combination by using different images with various levels of turbidity in the water. Experiments were conducted and the data was extracted from the Carnegie Lake in Princeton, and the Raritan river both in New Jersey, USA.

Angular momentum-dependent topological transport and its experimental realization using a transmission line network

Novel classical wave phenomenon analogs of the quantum spin Hall effect are mostly based on the construction of pseudo-spins. Here we show that the non-trivial topology of a system can also be realized using orbital angular momentum through angular-momentum-orbital coupling. The idea is illustrated with a tight-binding model and experimentally demonstrated with a transmission line network. We show experimentally that even a very small network cluster exhibits one-way topological edge states, and their properties can be described in terms of local Chern numbers. Our work provides a new mechanism to realize counterparts of the quantum spin Hall effect in classical waves and may offer insights for other systems.

Image classification based on support vector machine and the fusion of complementary features

Image Classification based on BOW (Bag-of-words) has broad application prospect in pattern recognition field but the shortcomings are existed because of single feature and low classification accuracy. To this end we combine three ingredients: (i) Three features with functions of mutual complementation are adopted to describe the images, including PHOW (Pyramid Histogram of Words), PHOC (Pyramid Histogram of Color) and PHOG (Pyramid Histogram of Orientated Gradients). (ii) The improvement of traditional BOW model is presented by using dense sample and an improved K-means clustering method for constructing the visual dictionary. (iii) An adaptive feature-weight adjusted image categorization algorithm based on the SVM and the fusion of multiple features is adopted. Experiments carried out on Caltech 101 database confirm the validity of the proposed approach. From the experimental results can be seen that the classification accuracy rate of the proposed method is improved by 7%-17% higher than that of the traditional BOW methods. This algorithm makes full use of global, local and spatial information and has significant improvements to the classification accuracy.
