Digital simulation of non-Abelian anyons with 68 programmable superconducting qubits

Non-Abelian anyons are exotic quasiparticle excitations hosted by certain topological phases of matter. They break the fermion-boson dichotomy and obey non-Abelian braiding statistics: their interchanges yield unitary operations, rather than merely a phase factor, in a space spanned by topologically degenerate wavefunctions. They are the building blocks of topological quantum computing. However, experimental observation of non-Abelian anyons and their characterizing braiding statistics is notoriously challenging and has remained elusive hitherto, in spite of various theoretical proposals. Here, we report an experimental quantum digital simulation of projective non-Abelian anyons and their braiding statistics with up to 68 programmable superconducting qubits arranged on a two-dimensional lattice. By implementing the ground states of the toric-code model with twists through quantum circuits, we demonstrate that twists exchange electric and magnetic charges and behave as a particular type of non-Abelian anyons, i.e., the Ising anyons. In particular, we show experimentally that these twists follow the fusion rules and non-Abelian braiding statistics of the Ising type, and can be explored to encode topological logical qubits. Furthermore, we demonstrate how to implement both single- and two-qubit logic gates through applying a sequence of elementary Pauli gates on the underlying physical qubits. Our results demonstrate a versatile quantum digital approach for simulating non-Abelian anyons, offering a new lens into the study of such peculiar quasiparticles.

Annotating Covert Hazardous Driving Scenarios Online: Utilizing Drivers' Electroencephalography (EEG) Signals

As autonomous driving systems prevail, it is becoming increasingly critical that the systems learn from databases containing fine-grained driving scenarios. Most databases currently available are human-annotated; they are expensive, time-consuming, and subject to behavioral biases. In this paper, we provide initial evidence supporting a novel technique utilizing drivers' electroencephalography (EEG) signals to implicitly label hazardous driving scenarios while passively viewing recordings of real-road driving, thus sparing the need for manual annotation and avoiding human annotators' behavioral biases during explicit report. We conducted an EEG experiment using real-life and animated recordings of driving scenarios and asked participants to report danger explicitly whenever necessary. Behavioral results showed the participants tended to report danger only when overt hazards (e.g., a vehicle or a pedestrian appearing unexpectedly from behind an occlusion) were in view. By contrast, their EEG signals were enhanced at the sight of both an overt hazard and a covert hazard (e.g., an occlusion signalling possible appearance of a vehicle or a pedestrian from behind). Thus, EEG signals were more sensitive to driving hazards than explicit reports. Further, the Time-Series AI (TSAI) successfully classified EEG signals corresponding to overt and covert hazards. We discuss future steps necessary to materialize the technique in real life.

"I am the follower, also the boss": Exploring Different Levels of Autonomy and Machine Forms of Guiding Robots for the Visually Impaired

Guiding robots, in the form of canes or cars, have recently been explored to assist blind and low vision (BLV) people. Such robots can provide full or partial autonomy when guiding. However, the pros and cons of different forms and autonomy for guiding robots remain unknown. We sought to fill this gap. We designed autonomy-switchable guiding robotic cane and car. We conducted a controlled lab-study (N=12) and a field study (N=9) on BLV. Results showed that full autonomy received better walking performance and subjective ratings in the controlled study, whereas participants used more partial autonomy in the natural environment as demanding more control. Besides, the car robot has demonstrated abilities to provide a higher sense of safety and navigation efficiency compared with the cane robot. Our findings offered empirical evidence about how the BLV community perceived different machine forms and autonomy, which can inform the design of assistive robots.

An Improved RaftStereo Trained with A Mixed Dataset for the Robust Vision Challenge 2022

Stereo-matching is a fundamental problem in computer vision. Despite recent progress by deep learning, improving the robustness is ineluctable when deploying stereo-matching models to real-world applications. Different from the common practices, i.e., developing an elaborate model to achieve robustness, we argue that collecting multiple available datasets for training is a cheaper way to increase generalization ability. Specifically, this report presents an improved RaftStereo trained with a mixed dataset of seven public datasets for the robust vision challenge (denoted as iRaftStereo_RVC). When evaluated on the training sets of Middlebury, KITTI-2015, and ETH3D, the model outperforms its counterparts trained with only one dataset, such as the popular Sceneflow. After fine-tuning the pre-trained model on the three datasets of the challenge, it ranks at 2nd place on the stereo leaderboard, demonstrating the benefits of mixed dataset pre-training.

Experimental quantum adversarial learning with programmable superconducting qubits

Quantum computing promises to enhance machine learning and artificial intelligence. Different quantum algorithms have been proposed to improve a wide spectrum of machine learning tasks. Yet, recent theoretical works show that, similar to traditional classifiers based on deep classical neural networks, quantum classifiers would suffer from the vulnerability problem: adding tiny carefully-crafted perturbations to the legitimate original data samples would facilitate incorrect predictions at a notably high confidence level. This will pose serious problems for future quantum machine learning applications in safety and security-critical scenarios. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of quantum adversarial learning with programmable superconducting qubits. We train quantum classifiers, which are built upon variational quantum circuits consisting of ten transmon qubits featuring average lifetimes of 150 $μ$s, and average fidelities of simultaneous single- and two-qubit gates above 99.94% and 99.4% respectively, with both real-life images (e.g., medical magnetic resonance imaging scans) and quantum data. We demonstrate that these well-trained classifiers (with testing accuracy up to 99%) can be practically deceived by small adversarial perturbations, whereas an adversarial training process would significantly enhance their robustness to such perturbations. Our results reveal experimentally a crucial vulnerability aspect of quantum learning systems under adversarial scenarios and demonstrate an effective defense strategy against adversarial attacks, which provide a valuable guide for quantum artificial intelligence applications with both near-term and future quantum devices.

Observation of a symmetry-protected topological time crystal with superconducting qubits

We report the observation of a symmetry-protected topological time crystal, which is implemented with an array of programmable superconducting qubits. Unlike the time crystals reported in previous experiments, where spontaneous breaking of the discrete time translational symmetry occurs for local observables throughout the whole system, the topological time crystal observed in our experiment breaks the time translational symmetry only at the boundaries and has trivial dynamics in the bulk. More concretely, we observe robust long-lived temporal correlations and sub-harmonic temporal response for the edge spins up to 40 driving cycles. We demonstrate that the sub-harmonic response is independent of whether the initial states are random product states or symmetry-protected topological states, and experimentally map out the phase boundary between the time crystalline and thermal phases. Our work paves the way to exploring peculiar non-equilibrium phases of matter emerged from the interplay between topology and localization as well as periodic driving, with current noisy intermediate-scale quantum processors.

Quantum Continual Learning Overcoming Catastrophic Forgetting

Catastrophic forgetting describes the fact that machine learning models will likely forget the knowledge of previously learned tasks after the learning process of a new one. It is a vital problem in the continual learning scenario and recently has attracted tremendous concern across different communities. In this paper, we explore the catastrophic forgetting phenomena in the context of quantum machine learning. We find that, similar to those classical learning models based on neural networks, quantum learning systems likewise suffer from such forgetting problem in classification tasks emerging from various application scenes. We show that based on the local geometrical information in the loss function landscape of the trained model, a uniform strategy can be adapted to overcome the forgetting problem in the incremental learning setting. Our results uncover the catastrophic forgetting phenomena in quantum machine learning and offer a practical method to overcome this problem, which opens a new avenue for exploring potential quantum advantages towards continual learning.

An Immune-related lncRNAs Model for Prognostic of SKCM Patients Base on Cox Regression and Coexpression Analysis

SKCM is the most dangerous one of skin cancer, its high degree of malignant, is the leading cause of skin cancer. And the level of radiation treatment and chemical treatment is minimal, so the mortality is high. Because of its complex molecular and cellular heterogeneity, the existing prediction model of skin cancer risk is not ideal. In this study, we developed an immune-related lncRNAs model to predict the prognosis of patients with SKCM. Screening for SKCM-related differential expression of lncRNA from TCGA. Identified immune-related lncRNAs and lncRNA-related mRNA based on the co-expression method. Through univariate and multivariate analysis, an immune-related lncRNA model is established to analyze the prognosis of SKCM patients. A 4-lncRNA skin cancer prediction model was constructed, including MIR155HG, AL137003.2, AC011374.2, and AC009495.2. According to the model, SKCM samples were divided into a high-risk group and low-risk group, and predict the survival of the two groups in 30 years. The area under the ROC curve is 0.749, which shows that the model has excellent performance. We constructed a 4-lncRNA model to predict the prognosis of patients with SKCM, indicating that these lncRNAs may play a unique role in the carcinogenesis of SKCM.

Increase the frame rate of a camera via temporal ghost imaging

Computational temporal ghost imaging (CTGI) allows the reconstruction of a fast signal from a two dimensional detection with no temporal resolution. High speed spatial modulation is implemented to encode temporal detail of the signal into the two dimensional detection. By calculating the correlation between the modulation and the rendered image, the temporal information can be retrieved. CTGI indicates a way to detect high speed non-reproducible signal from a slow detector. Based on CTGI, we propose an innovative scheme that can increase the frame rate of a camera by resolving the temporal detail of every camera image. To achieve this, CTGI is conducted parallelly to different areas of the scene. High speed spatial multiplexed modulation is performed, constraining the continuous scene into a series of short-time-scale frames. All the modulated frames are accumulated into one image that is eventually used in the correlation retrieval process. By performing CTGI reconstruction on each area independently, the temporal detail of the whole scene can be obtained. This method can have a strong application in ultrafast imaging.
