LLM-Bootstrapped Targeted Finding Guidance for Factual MLLM-based Medical Report Generation

The automatic generation of medical reports utilizing Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) frequently encounters challenges related to factual instability, which may manifest as the omission of findings or the incorporation of inaccurate information, thereby constraining their applicability in clinical settings. Current methodologies typically produce reports based directly on image features, which inherently lack a definitive factual basis. In response to this limitation, we introduce Fact-Flow, an innovative framework that separates the process of visual fact identification from the generation of reports. This is achieved by initially predicting clinical findings from the image, which subsequently directs the MLLM to produce a report that is factually precise. A pivotal advancement of our approach is a pipeline that leverages a Large Language Model (LLM) to autonomously create a dataset of labeled medical findings, effectively eliminating the need for expensive manual annotation. Extensive experimental evaluations conducted on two disease-focused medical datasets validate the efficacy of our method, demonstrating a significant enhancement in factual accuracy compared to state-of-the-art models, while concurrently preserving high standards of text quality.

From Objects to Events: Unlocking Complex Visual Understanding in Object Detectors via LLM-guided Symbolic Reasoning

Current object detectors excel at entity localization and classification, yet exhibit inherent limitations in event recognition capabilities. This deficiency arises from their architecture's emphasis on discrete object identification rather than modeling the compositional reasoning, inter-object correlations, and contextual semantics essential for comprehensive event understanding. To address this challenge, we present a novel framework that expands the capability of standard object detectors beyond mere object recognition to complex event understanding through LLM-guided symbolic reasoning. Our key innovation lies in bridging the semantic gap between object detection and event understanding without requiring expensive task-specific training. The proposed plug-and-play framework interfaces with any open-vocabulary detector while extending their inherent capabilities across architectures. At its core, our approach combines (i) a symbolic regression mechanism exploring relationship patterns among detected entities and (ii) a LLM-guided strategically guiding the search toward meaningful expressions. These discovered symbolic rules transform low-level visual perception into interpretable event understanding, providing a transparent reasoning path from objects to events with strong transferability across domains. We compared our training-free framework against specialized event recognition systems across diverse application domains. Experiments demonstrate that our framework enhances multiple object detector architectures to recognize complex events such as illegal fishing activities (75% AUROC, +8.36% improvement), construction safety violations (+15.77%), and abnormal crowd behaviors (+23.16%). Tunable optical second-order sideband effects in a parity-time symmetric optomechanical system

We theoretically investigate the optical second-order sideband generation (OSSG) in an optical parity-time (PT) symmetric system, which consists of a passive cavity trapping the atomic ensemble and an active cavity. It is found that near the exceptional point (EP), the efficiency of the OSSG increases sharply not only for the blue probe-pump detuning resonant case but also for the red one. Using experimentally achievable parameters, we study the effect of the atomic ensemble on the efficiency of the OSSG. The numerical results show that the efficiency of the OSSG is 30% higher than that of the first-order sideband, which is realized easily by simultaneously modulating the atom-cavity coupling strength and detuning. Moreover, the efficiency of the OSSG can also be tuned effectively by the pump power, and the efficiency is robust when the pump power is strong enough. This study may have some guidance for modulating the nonlinear optical properties and controlling light propagation, which may stimulate further applications in optical communications.

Electromagnetially-induced-transparency-like ground-state cooling in a double-cavity optomechanical system

We propose to cool a mechanical resonator close to its ground state via an electromagnetically-induced-transparency- (EIT-) like cooling mechanism in a double-cavity optomechanical system, where an additional cavity couples to the original one in the standard optomechanical system. By choosing optimal parameters such that the cooling process of the mechanical resonator corresponds to the maximum value of the optical fluctuation spectrum and the heating process to the minimum one, the mechanical resonator can be cooled with the final mean phonon number less than that at the absence of the additional cavity. And we show the mechanical resonator may be cooled close to its ground state via such an EIT-like cooling mechanism even when the original resolved sideband condition is not fulfilled at the absence of the additional cavity.

Rashba-Zeeman-effect-induced spin filtering energy windows in a quantum wire

We perform a numerical study on the spin-resolved transport in a quantum wire (QW) under the modulation of both Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and a perpendicular magnetic field (MF) by adopting the developed Usuki transfer-matrix method in combination with the Landauer-Buttiker formalism. Wide spin filtering energy windows can be achieved in this system for a spin-unpolarized injection. In addition, both the width of these energy windows and the magnitude of the spin conductance within these energy widows can be tuned by varying the Rashba SOC strength, which can be apprehended by analyzing the energy dispersions and the spin-polarized density distributions inside the QW, respectively. Further study also demonstrates that these Rashba-SOC-controlled spin filtering energy windows show a strong robustness against disorders. These findings may not only benefit to further understand the spin-dependent transport properties of the QW in the presence of external fields but also provide a theoretical instruction to design a spin filter device.

Spin-filtering and charge- and spin-switching effects in a quantum wire with periodically attached stubs

Spin-dependent electron transport in a periodically stubbed quantum wire in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is studied via the nonequilibrium Green's function method combined with the Landauer-Buttiker formalism. The coexistence of spin filtering, charge and spin switching are found in the considered system. The mechanism of these transport properties is revealed by analyzing the total charge density and spin-polarized density distributions in the stubbed quantum wire. Furthermore, periodic spin-density islands with high polarization are also found inside the stubs, owing to the interaction between the charge density islands and the Rashba SOI-induced effective magnetic field. The proposed nanostructure may be utilized to devise an all-electrical multifunctional spintronic device.
