WISK: A Workload-aware Learned Index for Spatial Keyword Queries

Spatial objects often come with textual information, such as Points of Interest (POIs) with their descriptions, which are referred to as geo-textual data. To retrieve such data, spatial keyword queries that take into account both spatial proximity and textual relevance have been extensively studied. Existing indexes designed for spatial keyword queries are mostly built based on the geo-textual data without considering the distribution of queries already received. However, previous studies have shown that utilizing the known query distribution can improve the index structure for future query processing. In this paper, we propose WISK, a learned index for spatial keyword queries, which self-adapts for optimizing querying costs given a query workload. One key challenge is how to utilize both structured spatial attributes and unstructured textual information during learning the index. We first divide the data objects into partitions, aiming to minimize the processing costs of the given query workload. We prove the NP-hardness of the partitioning problem and propose a machine learning model to find the optimal partitions. Then, to achieve more pruning power, we build a hierarchical structure based on the generated partitions in a bottom-up manner with a reinforcement learning-based approach. We conduct extensive experiments on real-world datasets and query workloads with various distributions, and the results show that WISK outperforms all competitors, achieving up to 8x speedup in querying time with comparable storage overhead.

Large Language Models as Master Key: Unlocking the Secrets of Materials Science with GPT

The amount of data has growing significance in exploring cutting-edge materials and a number of datasets have been generated either by hand or automated approaches. However, the materials science field struggles to effectively utilize the abundance of data, especially in applied disciplines where materials are evaluated based on device performance rather than their properties. This article presents a new natural language processing (NLP) task called structured information inference (SII) to address the complexities of information extraction at the device level in materials science. We accomplished this task by tuning GPT-3 on an existing perovskite solar cell FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) dataset with 91.8% F1-score and extended the dataset with data published since its release. The produced data is formatted and normalized, enabling its direct utilization as input in subsequent data analysis. This feature empowers materials scientists to develop models by selecting high-quality review articles within their domain. Additionally, we designed experiments to predict the electrical performance of solar cells and design materials or devices with targeted parameters using large language models (LLMs). Our results demonstrate comparable performance to traditional machine learning methods without feature selection, highlighting the potential of LLMs to acquire scientific knowledge and design new materials akin to materials scientists.

Minimizing the Influence of Misinformation via Vertex Blocking

Information cascade in online social networks can be rather negative, e.g., the spread of rumors may trigger panic. To limit the influence of misinformation in an effective and efficient manner, the influence minimization (IMIN) problem is studied in the literature: given a graph G and a seed set S, blocking at most b vertices such that the influence spread of the seed set is minimized. In this paper, we are the first to prove the IMIN problem is NP-hard and hard to approximate. Due to the hardness of the problem, existing works resort to greedy solutions and use Monte-Carlo Simulations to solve the problem. However, they are cost-prohibitive on large graphs since they have to enumerate all the candidate blockers and compute the decrease of expected spread when blocking each of them. To improve the efficiency, we propose the AdvancedGreedy algorithm (AG) based on a new graph sampling technique that applies the dominator tree structure, which can compute the decrease of the expected spread of all candidate blockers at once. Besides, we further propose the GreedyReplace algorithm (GR) by considering the relationships among candidate blockers. Extensive experiments on 8 real-life graphs demonstrate that our AG and GR algorithms are significantly faster than the state-of-the-art by up to 6 orders of magnitude, and GR can achieve better effectiveness with its time cost close to AG.

HGMatch: A Match-by-Hyperedge Approach for Subgraph Matching on Hypergraphs

Hypergraphs are generalisation of graphs in which a hyperedge can connect any number of vertices. It can describe n-ary relationships and high-order information among entities compared to conventional graphs. In this paper, we study the fundamental problem of subgraph matching on hypergraphs (i.e, subhypergraph matching). Existing methods directly extend subgraph matching algorithms to the case of hypergraphs. However, this approach delays hyperedge verification and underutilises the high-order information in hypergraphs, which leads to large search space and high enumeration cost. Furthermore, with the growing size of hypergraphs, it is becoming hard to compute subhypergraph matching sequentially. Thus, we propose an efficient and parallel subhypergraph matching system, HGMatch, to handle subhypergraph matching in massive hypergraphs. We proposes a novel match-by-hyperedge framework to utilise high-order information in hypergraphs and uses set operations for efficient candidates generation. Moreover, we develop an optimised parallel execution engine in HGMatch based on the dataflow model, which features a task-based scheduler and fine-grained dynamic work stealing to achieve bounded memory execution and better load balancing. Experimental evaluation on 10 real-world datasets shows that HGMatch outperforms the extended version of the state-of-the-art subgraph matching algorithms (CFL, DAF, CECI and RapidMatch) by orders of magnitude when using a single thread, and achieves almost linear scalability when the number of threads increases.

Dynamic Private Task Assignment under Differential Privacy

Data collection is indispensable for spatial crowdsourcing services, such as resource allocation, policymaking, and scientific explorations. However, privacy issues make it challenging for users to share their information unless receiving sufficient compensation. Differential Privacy (DP) is a promising mechanism to release helpful information while protecting individuals' privacy. However, most DP mechanisms only consider a fixed compensation for each user's privacy loss. In this paper, we design a task assignment scheme that allows workers to dynamically improve their utility with dynamic distance privacy leakage. Specifically, we propose two solutions to improve the total utility of task assignment results, namely Private Utility Conflict-Elimination (PUCE) approach and Private Game Theory (PGT) approach, respectively. We prove that PUCE achieves higher utility than the state-of-the-art works. We demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our PUCE and PGT approaches on both real and synthetic data sets compared with the recent distance-based approach, Private Distance Conflict-Elimination (PDCE). PUCE is always better than PDCE slightly. PGT is 50% to 63% faster than PDCE and can improve 16% utility on average when worker range is large enough.

iEmoTTS: Toward Robust Cross-Speaker Emotion Transfer and Control for Speech Synthesis based on Disentanglement between Prosody and Timbre

The capability of generating speech with specific type of emotion is desired for many applications of human-computer interaction. Cross-speaker emotion transfer is a common approach to generating emotional speech when speech with emotion labels from target speakers is not available for model training. This paper presents a novel cross-speaker emotion transfer system, named iEmoTTS. The system is composed of an emotion encoder, a prosody predictor, and a timbre encoder. The emotion encoder extracts the identity of emotion type as well as the respective emotion intensity from the mel-spectrogram of input speech. The emotion intensity is measured by the posterior probability that the input utterance carries that emotion. The prosody predictor is used to provide prosodic features for emotion transfer. The timber encoder provides timbre-related information for the system. Unlike many other studies which focus on disentangling speaker and style factors of speech, the iEmoTTS is designed to achieve cross-speaker emotion transfer via disentanglement between prosody and timbre. Prosody is considered as the main carrier of emotion-related speech characteristics and timbre accounts for the essential characteristics for speaker identification. Zero-shot emotion transfer, meaning that speech of target speakers are not seen in model training, is also realized with iEmoTTS. Extensive experiments of subjective evaluation have been carried out. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of iEmoTTS as compared with other recently proposed systems of cross-speaker emotion transfer. It is shown that iEmoTTS can produce speech with designated emotion type and controllable emotion intensity. With appropriate information bottleneck capacity, iEmoTTS is able to effectively transfer emotion information to a new speaker. Bayesian Optimization Enhanced Deep Reinforcement Learning for Trajectory Planning and Network Formation in Multi-UAV Networks

In this paper, we employ multiple UAVs coordinated by a base station (BS) to help the ground users (GUs) to offload their sensing data. Different UAVs can adapt their trajectories and network formation to expedite data transmissions via multi-hop relaying. The trajectory planning aims to collect all GUs' data, while the UAVs' network formation optimizes the multi-hop UAV network topology to minimize the energy consumption and transmission delay. The joint network formation and trajectory optimization is solved by a two-step iterative approach. Firstly, we devise the adaptive network formation scheme by using a heuristic algorithm to balance the UAVs' energy consumption and data queue size. Then, with the fixed network formation, the UAVs' trajectories are further optimized by using multi-agent deep reinforcement learning without knowing the GUs' traffic demands and spatial distribution. To improve the learning efficiency, we further employ Bayesian optimization to estimate the UAVs' flying decisions based on historical trajectory points. This helps avoid inefficient action explorations and improves the convergence rate in the model training. The simulation results reveal close spatial-temporal couplings between the UAVs' trajectory planning and network formation. Compared with several baselines, our solution can better exploit the UAVs' cooperation in data offloading, thus improving energy efficiency and delay performance.

Anomalous magneto-thermoelectric behavior in massive Dirac materials

Extensive studies of electron transport in Dirac materials have shown positive magneto-resistance (MR) and positive magneto-thermopower (MTP) in a magnetic field perpendicular to the excitation current or thermal gradient. In contrast, measurements of electron transport often show a negative longitudinal MR and negative MTP for a magnetic field oriented along the excitation current or thermal gradient; this is attributed to the chiral anomaly in Dirac materials. Here, we report a very different magneto-thermoelectric transport behavior in the massive Dirac material ZrTe5. Although thin flakes show a commonly observed positive MR in a perpendicular magnetic field, distinct from other Dirac materials, we observe a sharp negative MTP. In a parallel magnetic field, we still observe a negative longitudinal MR, however, a remarkable positive MTP is observed for the fields parallel to the thermal gradients. Our theoretical calculations suggest that this anomalous magneto-thermoelectric behavior can be attributed to the screened Coulomb scattering. This work demonstrates the significance of impurity scattering in the electron transport of topological materials and provides deep insight into the novel magneto-transport phenomena in Dirac materials.

Efficiently Answering Quality Constrained Shortest Distance Queries in Large Graphs

The shortest-path distance is a fundamental concept in graph analytics and has been extensively studied in the literature. In many real-world applications, quality constraints are naturally associated with edges in the graphs and finding the shortest distance between two vertices $s$ and $t$ along only valid edges (i.e., edges that satisfy a given quality constraint) is also critical. In this paper, we investigate this novel and important problem of quality constraint shortest distance queries. We propose an efficient index structure based on 2-hop labeling approaches. Supported by a path dominance relationship incorporating both quality and length information, we demonstrate the minimal property of the new index. An efficient query processing algorithm is also developed. Extensive experimental studies over real-life datasets demonstrates efficiency and effectiveness of our techniques.

A possible 250-second X-ray quasi-periodicity in the fast blue optical transient AT2018cow

The fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) are a new population of extragalactic transients of unclear physical origin. A variety of mechanisms have been proposed including failed supernova explosion, shock interaction with a dense medium, young magnetar, accretion onto a compact object, and stellar tidal disruption event, but none is conclusive. Here we report the discovery of a possible X-ray quasi-periodicity signal with a period of $\sim$250 second (at a significance level of 99.76%) in the brightest FBOT AT2018cow through the analysis of XMM-Newton/PN data. The signal is independently detected at the same frequency in the average power density spectrum from data taken from the Swift telescope, with observations covering from 6 to 37 days after the optical discovery, though the significance level is lower (94.26%). This suggests that the QPO frequency may be stable over at least 1.1$\times$ 10$^{4}$ cycles. Assuming the $\sim$250 second QPO to be a scaled-down analogue of that typically seen in stellar mass black holes, a black hole mass of $\sim10^{3}-10^{5}$ solar masses could be inferred. The overall X-ray luminosity evolution could be modeled with the stellar tidal disruption by a black hole of $\sim10^4$ solar masses, providing a viable mechanism to produce AT2018cow. Our findings suggest that other bright FBOTs may also harbor intermediate-mass black holes.

TDB: Breaking All Hop-Constrained Cycles in Billion-Scale Directed Graphs

The Feedback vertex set with the minimum size is one of Karp's 21 NP-complete problems targeted at breaking all the cycles in a graph. This problem is applicable to a broad variety of domains, including E-commerce networks, database systems, and program analysis. In reality, users are frequently most concerned with the hop-constrained cycles (i.e., cycles with a limited number of hops). For instance, in the E-commerce networks, the fraud detection team would discard cycles with a high number of hops since they are less relevant and grow exponentially in size. Thus, it is quite reasonable to investigate the feedback vertex set problem in the context of hop-constrained cycles, namely hop-constrained cycle cover problem. It is concerned with determining a set of vertices that covers all hop-constrained cycles in a given directed graph. A common method to solve this is to use a bottom-up algorithm, where it iteratively selects cover vertices into the result set. Based on this paradigm, the existing works mainly focus on the vertices orders and several heuristic strategies. In this paper, a totally opposite cover process topdown is proposed and bounds are presented on it. Surprisingly, both theoretical time complexity and practical performance are improved.

Extinction by plasmonic nanoparticles in dispersive and dissipative media

Extinction of small metallic spheres has been well understood through the classical Mie theory when the host medium is dispersive and transparent. However, the role of host dissipation on the particulate extinction remains a competition between the enhancing and reducing effects on the localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR). Here, using a generalized Mie theory, we elaborate on the specific influence mechanisms of host dissipation on the extinction efficiency factors of a plasmonic nanosphere. To this end, we isolate the dissipative effects by comparing the dispersive and dissipative host with its transparent counterpart. As a result, we identify the damping effects of host dissipation on the LSPR including the resonance widening and amplitude reducing. The resonance positions are shifted by host dissipation, which cannot be predicted by the classical Fröhlich condition. Finally, we demonstrate that a wide-band extinction enhancement due to host dissipation can be realized away from the positions of LSPR.

Towards Higher-order Topological Consistency for Unsupervised Network Alignment

Network alignment task, which aims to identify corresponding nodes in different networks, is of great significance for many subsequent applications. Without the need for labeled anchor links, unsupervised alignment methods have been attracting more and more attention. However, the topological consistency assumptions defined by existing methods are generally low-order and less accurate because only the edge-indiscriminative topological pattern is considered, which is especially risky in an unsupervised setting. To reposition the focus of the alignment process from low-order to higher-order topological consistency, in this paper, we propose a fully unsupervised network alignment framework named HTC. The proposed higher-order topological consistency is formulated based on edge orbits, which is merged into the information aggregation process of a graph convolutional network so that the alignment consistencies are transformed into the similarity of node embeddings. Furthermore, the encoder is trained to be multi-orbit-aware and then be refined to identify more trusted anchor links. Node correspondence is comprehensively evaluated by integrating all different orders of consistency. {In addition to sound theoretical analysis, the superiority of the proposed method is also empirically demonstrated through extensive experimental evaluation. On three pairs of real-world datasets and two pairs of synthetic datasets, our HTC consistently outperforms a wide variety of unsupervised and supervised methods with the least or comparable time consumption. It also exhibits robustness to structural noise as a result of our multi-orbit-aware training mechanism.

Lyra: A Benchmark for Turducken-Style Code Generation

Recently, neural techniques have been used to generate source code automatically. While promising for declarative languages, these approaches achieve much poorer performance on datasets for imperative languages. Since a declarative language is typically embedded in an imperative language (i.e., the turducken-style programming) in real-world software development, the promising results on declarative languages can hardly lead to significant reduction of manual software development efforts. In this paper, we define a new code generation task: given a natural language comment, this task aims to generate a program in a base imperative language with an embedded declarative language. To our knowledge, this is the first turducken-style code generation task. For this task, we present Lyra: a dataset in Python with embedded SQL. This dataset contains 2,000 carefully annotated database manipulation programs from real-world projects. Each program is paired with both a Chinese comment and an English comment. In our experiment, we adopted Transformer, BERT-style, and GPT-style models as baselines. In the best setting, the generation performance of GPT-style models is better than others, where the AST exact matching accuracy is 24% and 25.5% when using Chinese and English comments, respectively. Therefore, we believe that Lyra provides a new challenge for code generation. Yet, overcoming this challenge may significantly boost the applicability of code generation techniques for real-world software development.

Towards Real-Time Counting Shortest Cycles on Dynamic Graphs: A Hub Labeling Approach

With the ever-increasing prevalence of graph data in a wide spectrum of applications, it becomes essential to analyze structural trends in dynamic graphs on a continual basis. The shortest cycle is a fundamental pattern in graph analytics. In this paper, we investigate the problem of shortest cycle counting for a given vertex in dynamic graphs in light of its applicability to problems such as fraud detection. To address such queries efficiently, we propose a 2-hop labeling based algorithm called Counting Shortest Cycle (CSC for short). Additionally, techniques for dynamically updating the CSC index are explored. Comprehensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our method. In particular, CSC enables query evaluation in a few hundreds of microseconds for graphs with millions of edges, and improves query efficiency by two orders of magnitude when compared to the baseline solutions. Also, the update algorithm could efficiently cope with edge insertions (deletions).

Semiconductor-like photocarrier dynamics in Dirac Semimetal Cd3As2 film Probed with transient Terahertz Spectroscopy

The topological three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 has drawn great attention for the novel physics and promising applications in optoelectronic devices operating in the infrared and THz regimes. Among the extensive studies in the past decades, one intriguing debate is the underlined mechanism that governing the nonequilibrium carrier dynamics following photoexcitation. In this study, the temperature dependent photocarrier dynamics in Cd3As2 film has been investigated with time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy. The experimental results demonstrate that photoexcitation results in abrupt increase in THz photoconductivity, and the subsequent relaxation shows a single exponential relaxation for various temperatures and pump fluences. The relaxation time increase from 4.7 ps at 5 K to 7.5 ps at 220 K, while the lifetime remains almost constant of ~7.5 ps with temperature above 220 K. A Rothwarf-Taylor model was employed to fit the temperature dependent relaxation time, and a narrow energy gap of ~35 meV is obtained, which occurs around the Dirac node. Our THz spectroscopy results demonstrate that the photocarrier relaxation in Cd3As2 shows a semiconductor-like behavior, rather than hot carrier scatterings in graphene and most of metals.

Balanced Clique Computation in Signed Networks: Concepts and Algorithms

Clique is one of the most fundamental models for cohesive subgraph mining in network analysis. Existing clique model mainly focuses on unsigned networks. However, in real world, many applications are modeled as signed networks with positive and negative edges. As the signed networks hold their own properties different from the unsigned networks, the existing clique model is inapplicable for the signed networks. Motivated by this, we propose the balanced clique model that considers the most fundamental and dominant theory, structural balance theory, for signed networks. Following the balanced clique model, we study the maximal balanced clique enumeration problem (MBCE) which computes all the maximal balanced cliques in a given signed network and the maximum balanced clique search problem (MBCS) which computes the balanced clique with maximum size. We show that MBCE problem and MBCS problem are both NP-Hard. For the MBCE problem, a straightforward solution is to treat the signed network as two unsigned networks and leverage the off-the-shelf techniques for unsigned networks. However, such a solution is inefficient for large signed networks. To address this problem, in this paper, we first propose a new maximal balanced clique enumeration algorithm by exploiting the unique properties of signed networks. Based on the new proposed algorithm, we devise two optimization strategies to further improve the efficiency of the enumeration. For the MBCS problem, we propose a new search framework based on search space partition. To further improve the efficiency of the new framework, we propose multiple optimization strategies regarding to redundant search branches and invalid candidates. We conduct extensive experiments on large real datasets. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency, effectiveness and scalability of our proposed algorithms for MBCE problem and MBCS problem.

Reinforcement Learning Based Query Vertex Ordering Model for Subgraph Matching

Subgraph matching is a fundamental problem in various fields that use graph structured data. Subgraph matching algorithms enumerate all isomorphic embeddings of a query graph q in a data graph G. An important branch of matching algorithms exploit the backtracking search approach which recursively extends intermediate results following a matching order of query vertices. It has been shown that the matching order plays a critical role in time efficiency of these backtracking based subgraph matching algorithms. In recent years, many advanced techniques for query vertex ordering (i.e., matching order generation) have been proposed to reduce the unpromising intermediate results according to the preset heuristic rules. In this paper, for the first time we apply the Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) techniques to generate the high-quality matching order for subgraph matching algorithms. Instead of using the fixed heuristics to generate the matching order, our model could capture and make full use of the graph information, and thus determine the query vertex order with the adaptive learning-based rule that could significantly reduces the number of redundant enumerations. With the help of the reinforcement learning framework, our model is able to consider the long-term benefits rather than only consider the local information at current ordering step.Extensive experiments on six real-life data graphs demonstrate that our proposed matching order generation technique could reduce up to two orders of magnitude of query processing time compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms.
