HoneyDOC: An Efficient Honeypot Architecture Enabling All-Round Design

Honeypots are designed to trap the attacker with the purpose of investigating its malicious behavior. Owing to the increasing variety and sophistication of cyber attacks, how to capture high-quality attack data has become a challenge in the context of honeypot area. All-round honeypots, which mean significant improvement in sensibility, countermeasure and stealth, are necessary to tackle the problem. In this paper, we propose a novel honeypot architecture termed HoneyDOC to support all-round honeypot design and implementation. Our HoneyDOC architecture clearly identifies three essential independent and collaborative modules, Decoy, Captor and Orchestrator. Based on the efficient architecture, a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enabled honeypot system is designed, which supplies high programmability for technically sustaining the features for capturing high-quality data. A proof-of-concept system is implemented to validate its feasibility and effectiveness. The experimental results show the benefits by using the proposed architecture comparing to the previous honeypot solutions.

Enabling an Anatomic View to Investigate Honeypot Systems: A Survey

A honeypot is a type of security facility deliberately created to be probed, attacked and compromised. It is often used for protecting production systems by detecting and deflecting unauthorized accesses. It is also useful for investigating the behaviour of attackers, and in particular, unknown attacks. For the past 17 years much effort has been invested in the research and development of honeypot based techniques and tools and they have evolved to become an increasingly powerful means of defending against the creations of the blackhat community. In this paper, by studying multiple honeypot systems, the two essential elements of honeypots - the decoy and the security program - are captured and presented, together with two abstract organizational forms - independent and cooperative - in which these two elements can be integrated. A novel decoy and security program (D-P) based taxonomy is proposed, for the purpose of investigating and classifying the various techniques involved in honeypot systems. An extensive set of honeypot projects and research, which cover the techniques applied in both independent and cooperative honeypots, is surveyed under the taxonomy framework. Finally, the taxonomy is applied to a wide set of tools and systems in order to demonstrate its validity and predict the tendency of honeypot development.

A lasing mechanism based on absorption boundary of gain materials

A new kind of mechanism of lasing is investigated experimentally. It is quite different from the traditional laser with cavity and the random laser with random scattering. In this mechanism, the intensity-dependent refractive index effect and thermal lensing effects of the pump beam induce a large gradient of the refractive index in the gain material, which forms a passive equivalent boundary that provides the feedback in the lasing system. A real lasing system, a liquid disk laser, is performed, it achieves 2-D omnidirectional radiation with a high efficiency of 28%, its radiation spectral property can be explained by resonant Raman scattering.

Near-infrared negative-index metamaterials consisting of multiple layers of perforated metal-dielectric stacks

In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a near-infrared negative-index metamaterial (NIM) slab consisting of multiple layers of perforated metal-dielectric stacks and exhibiting low imaginary part of index over the wavelength of negative refraction. The effective index is obtained using two different numerical methods and found to be consistent. Backward phase propagation is verified by calculation of fields inside the metamaterial. These results point to a new design of low loss thick metamaterial at optical frequencies.

Demonstration of Near-Infrared Negative-Index Materials

Metal-based negative refractive index materials have been extensively studied in the microwave region. However, negative-index metamaterials have not been realized at near-IR or visible fre-quencies due to difficulties of fabrication and to the generally poorer optical properties of metals at these wavelengths. In this paper, we report the first fabrication and experimental verification of a transversely structured metal-dielectric-metal multilayer exhibiting a negative refractive in-dex around 2 mm. Both the amplitude and the phase of the transmission and reflection were measured experimentally, and are in good agreement with a rigorous coupled wave analysis.
