Helium-Implantation-Induced Lattice Strains and Defects in Tungsten probed by X-ray Micro-diffraction

Tungsten is the main candidate material for plasma-facing armour components in future fusion reactors. Bombardment with energetic fusion neutrons causes collision cascade damage and defect formation. Interaction of defects with helium, produced by transmutation and injected from the plasma, modifies defect retention and behaviour. Here we investigate the residual lattice strains caused by different doses of helium-ion-implantation into tungsten and tungsten-rhenium alloys. Energy and depth-resolved synchrotron X-ray micro-diffraction uniquely permits the measurement of lattice strain with sub-micron 3D spatial resolution and ~10-4 strain sensitivity. Increase of helium dose from 300 appm to 3000 appm increases volumetric strain by only ~2.4 times, indicating that defect retention per injected helium atom is ~3 times higher at low helium doses. This suggests that defect retention is not a simple function of implanted helium dose, but strongly depends on material composition and presence of impurities. Conversely, analysis of W-1wt% Re alloy samples and of different crystal orientations shows that both the presence of rhenium, and crystal orientation, have comparatively small effect on defect retention. These insights are key for the design of armour components in future reactors where it will be essential to account for irradiation-induced dimensional change when predicting component lifetime and performance.

Wall modes in magnetoconvection at high Hartmann numbers

Three-dimensional turbulent magnetoconvection at a Rayleigh number of $Ra=10^7$ in liquid gallium at a Prandtl number $Pr=0.025$ is studied in a closed square cell for very strong external vertical magnetic fields $B_0$ in direct numerical simulations which apply the quasistatic approximation. As $B_0$ or equivalently the Hartmann number $Ha$ are increased, the convection flow that is highly turbulent in the absence of magnetic fields crosses the Chandrasekhar linear stability limit for which thermal convection is ceased in an infinitely extended layer and which can be assigned with a critical Hartmann number $Ha_{\rm c}$. Similar to rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection, our simulations reveal subcritical sidewall modes that maintain a small but finite convective heat transfer for $Ha>Ha_{\rm c}$. We report a detailed analysis of the complex two-layer structure of these wall modes, their extension into the cell interior and a resulting sidewall boundary layer composition that is found to scale with the Shercliff layer thickness.

Impact of near-PT symmetry on exciting solitons and interactions based on a complex Ginzburg-Landau model

We present and theoretically report the influence of a class of near-parity-time-(PT-) symmetric potentials with spectral filtering parameter $α_2$ and nonlinear gain-loss coefficient $β_2$ on solitons in the complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation. The potentials do not admit entirely-real linear spectra any more due to the existence of coefficients $α_2$ or $β_2$. However, we find that most stable exact solitons can exist in the second quadrant of the $(α_2, β_2)$ space, including on the corresponding axes. More intriguingly, the centrosymmetric two points in the $(α_2, β_2)$ space possess imaginary-axis (longitudinal-axis) symmetric linear-stability spectra. Furthermore, an unstable nonlinear mode can be excited to another stable nonlinear mode by the adiabatic change of $α_2$ and $β_2$. Other fascinating properties associated with the exact solitons are also examined in detail, such as the interactions and energy flux. These results are useful for the related experimental designs and applications.

Glancing-Incidence Focussed Ion Beam Milling: A Coherent X-ray Diffraction Study of 3D Nano-scale Lattice Strains and Crystal Defects

This study presents a detailed examination of the lattice distortions introduced by glancing incidence Focussed Ion Beam (FIB) milling. Using non-destructive multi-reflection Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction we probe damage formation in an initially pristine gold micro-crystal following several stages of FIB milling. These experiments allow access to the full lattice strain tensor in the micro-crystal with ~25 nm 3D spatial resolution, enabling a nano-scale analysis of residual lattice strains and defects formed. Our results show that 30 keV glancing incidence milling produces fewer large defects than normal incidence milling at the same energy. However the resulting residual lattice strains have similar magnitude and extend up to ~50 nm into the sample. At the edges of the milled surface, where the ion-beam tails impact the sample at near-normal incidence, large dislocation loops with a range of burgers vectors are formed. Further glancing incidence FIB polishing with 5 keV ion energy removes these dislocation loops and reduces the lattice strains caused by higher energy FIB milling. However, even at the lower ion energy, damage-induced lattice strains are present within a ~20 nm thick surface layer. These results highlight the need for careful consideration and management of FIB damage. They also show that low-energy FIB-milling is an effective tool for removing FIB-milling induced lattice strains. This is important for the preparation of micro-mechanical test specimens and strain microscopy samples.

Heat and momentum transfer for magnetoconvection in a vertical external magnetic field

The scaling theory of Grossmann and Lohse (J. Fluid Mech. 407, 27 (2000)) for the turbulent heat and momentum transfer is extended to the magnetoconvection case in the presence of a (strong) vertical magnetic field. The comparison with existing laboratory experiments and direct numerical simulations in the quasistatic limit allows to restrict the parameter space to very low Prandtl and magnetic Prandtl numbers and thus to reduce the number of unknown parameters in the model. Also included is the Chandrasekhar limit for which the outer magnetic induction field B is large enough such that convective motion is suppressed and heat is transported by diffusion. Our theory identifies four distinct regimes of magnetoconvection which are distinguished by the strength of the outer magnetic field and the level of turbulence in the flow, respectively.

Enhanced Superconducting Transition Temperature due to Tetragonal Domains in Two-Dimensionally Doped SrTiO$_3$

Strontium titanate is a low-temperature, non-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor that superconducts to carrier concentrations lower than in any other system and exhibits avoided ferroelectricity at low temperatures. Neither the mechanism of superconductivity in strontium titanate nor the importance of the structure and dielectric properties for the superconductivity are well understood. We studied the effects of twin structure on superconductivity in a 5.5-nm-thick layer of niobium-doped SrTiO$_{3}$ embedded in undoped SrTiO$_{3}$. We used a scanning superconducting quantum interference device susceptometer to image the local diamagnetic response of the sample as a function of temperature. We observed regions that exhibited a superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ $\gtrsim$ 10% higher than the temperature at which the sample was fully superconducting. The pattern of these regions varied spatially in a manner characteristic of structural twin domains. Our results emphasize that the anisotropic dielectric properties of SrTiO$_{3}$ are important for its superconductivity, and need to be considered in any theory of the mechanism of the superconductivity.

Coherent X-ray measurements of ion-implantation-induced lattice strains in nano-crystals

Focussed Ion Beam (FIB) milling is a mainstay of nano-scale machining. By manipulating a tightly focussed beam of energetic ions, often gallium (Ga+), FIB can sculpt nanostructures via localised sputtering. This ability to cut solid matter on the nano-scale has revolutionised sample preparation across the life-, earth- and materials sciences. For example FIB is central to microchip prototyping, 3D material analysis, targeted electron microscopy sample extraction and the nanotechnology behind size-dependent material properties. Despite its widespread usage, detailed understanding of the functional consequences of FIB-induced structural damage, intrinsic to the technique, remains elusive. Here, we present nano-scale measurements of three-dimensional, FIB-induced lattice strains, probed using Bragg Coherent X-ray Diffraction Imaging (BCDI). We observe that even low gallium ion doses, typical of FIB imaging, cause substantial lattice distortions. At higher doses, extended self-organised defect structures appear, giving rise to stresses far in excess of the bulk yield limit. Combined with detailed numerical calculations, these observations provide fundamental insight into the nature of the damage created and the structural instabilities that lead to a surprisingly inhomogeneous morphology.

On decay and blow-up of solutions for a singular nonlocal viscoelastic problem with a nonlinear source term

In this paper we consider a singular nonlocal viscoelastic problem with a nonlinear source term and a possible damping term. We proved that if the initial data enter into the stable set, the solution exists globally and decays to zero with a more general rate, and if the initial data enter into the unstable set, the solution with non-positive initial energy as well as positive initial energy blows up in finite time. These are achieved by using the potential well theory, the modified convexity method and the perturbed energy method.

Some Weighted Ostrowski Type Inequalities on Time Scales Involving Combination of Weighted Delta-Integral Means

In this paper we obtain some weighted generalizations of Ostrowski type inequalities on time scales involving combination of weighted Δ-integral means, i.e., a weighted Ostrowski type inequality on time scales involving combination of weighted Δ-integral means, two weighted Ostrowski type inequalities for two functions on time scales, and some weighted perturbed Ostrowski type inequalities on time scales. We also give some other interesting inequalities and recapture some known results as special cases.

New bounds for the companion of Ostrowski's inequality and applications

In this paper we establish some new bounds for the companion of Ostrowski's inequality for the case when $f'\in L^1[a,b]$, $f"\in L^2[a,b]$ and $f'\in L^2[a,b]$, respectively. We point out that the results in the first and third cases are sharp and that some of these new estimations can be better than the known results. Some applications to composite quadrature rules, and to probability density functions are also given.
