Beyond What Meets the Eye: Unveiling Situational Illusions for Multimodal Large Language Models

Real-world situation appearances can deviate from their underlying physical states, challenging the reliability of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) in practical applications. In this paper, we term this phenomenon situational illusions and investigate: (1) how MLLMs perform under such illusions, and (2) how to mitigate the limitations. We first develop a comprehensive where-what-how taxonomy that characterizes where situational illusions occur, what targets they take, and how they arise. Building on this taxonomy, we introduce MSIBench, a benchmark designed to assess the discrimination, understanding, and reasoning capabilities of MLLMs under situational illusions. Evaluations of 27 model configurations reveal that current MLLMs are highly vulnerable to these illusions and exhibit 6 typical failure modes related to visual observation, grounding, and reasoning. To mitigate the limitations, we build on the core idea of systematically inspecting and reasoning over visual evidence for contextual understanding, developing prompting for closed-source models and supervised fine-tuning for open-source models, respectively. These two simple yet effective methods improve model performances by 20% at most, suggesting a practical path toward more reliable multimodal perception and reasoning in complex real-world environments.

Integral Fast Fourier Color Constancy

Traditional auto white balance (AWB) algorithms typically assume a single global illuminant source, which leads to color distortions in multi-illuminant scenes. While recent neural network-based methods have shown excellent accuracy in such scenarios, their high parameter count and computational demands limit their practicality for real-time video applications. The Fast Fourier Color Constancy (FFCC) algorithm was proposed for single-illuminant-source scenes, predicting a global illuminant source with high efficiency. However, it cannot be directly applied to multi-illuminant scenarios unless specifically modified. To address this, we propose Integral Fast Fourier Color Constancy (IFFCC), an extension of FFCC tailored for multi-illuminant scenes. IFFCC leverages the proposed integral UV histogram to accelerate histogram computations across all possible regions in Cartesian space and parallelizes Fourier-based convolution operations, resulting in a spatially-smooth illumination map. This approach enables high-accuracy, real-time AWB in multi-illuminant scenes. Extensive experiments show that IFFCC achieves accuracy that is on par with or surpasses that of pixel-level neural networks, while reducing the parameter count by over $400\times$ and processing speed by 20 - $100\times$ faster than network-based approaches.

Observation of Superoscillation Superlattices

Superoscillation (SO) wavefunctions, that locally oscillate much faster than its fastest Fourier component, in light waves have enhanced optical technologies beyond diffraction limits, but never been controlled into 2D periodic lattices. Here, we report the 2D superoscillation lattices (SOL) with controlled symmetries, where the local wavevector can be 700 times larger than the global maximal wavevector (k0) in a localized region 100 times smaller than the global minimal wavelength ({\lambda}0). We also demonstrate the superoscillation superlattices (SOSL) as twisted bilayer Moir\'e patterns of two SOL, akin to the magic angle tuning in advanced twistronics, we can continually tune the ondemand SO with local maximal wavevector in a range of 450k0 to 700k0 and with {\lambda}0/100 to{\lambda}0/1000. The twistronic SOSL will advance optical imaging and metrology into extreme higher dimensional superresolution.
