Channel-Transferable Semantic Communications for Multi-User OFDM-NOMA Systems

Semantic communications are expected to become the core new paradigms of the sixth generation (6G) wireless networks. Most existing works implicitly utilize channel information for codecs training, which leads to poor communications when channel type or statistical characteristics change. To tackle this issue posed by various channels, a novel channel-transferable semantic communications (CT-SemCom) framework is proposed, which adapts the codecs learned on one type of channel to other types of channels. Furthermore, integrating the proposed framework and the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems integrating non-orthogonal multiple access technologies, i.e., OFDM-NOMA systems, a power allocation problem to realize the transfer from additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels to multi-subcarrier Rayleigh fading channels is formulated. We then design a semantics-similar dual transformation (SSDT) algorithm to derive analytical solutions with low complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed CT-SemCom framework with SSDT algorithm significantly outperforms the existing work w.r.t. channel transferability, e.g., the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of image transmission improves by 4.2-7.3 dB under different variances of Rayleigh fading channels.

Dynamic UAV Swarm Collaboration for Multi-Targets Tracking under Malicious Jamming: Joint Power, Path and Target Association Optimization

In this paper, the multi-target tracking (MTT) with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarm is investigated in the presence of jammers, where UAVs in the swarm communicate with each other to exchange information of targets during tracking. The communication between UAVs suffers from severe interference, including inter-UAV interference and jamming, thus leading to a deteriorated quality of MTT. To mitigate the interference and achieve MTT, we formulate a interference minimization problem by jointly optimizing UAV's sub-swarm division, trajectory, and power, subject to the constraint of MTT, collision prevention, flying ability, and UAV energy consumption. Due to the multiple coupling of sub-swarm division, trajectory, and power, the proposed optimization problem is NP-hard. To solve this challenging problem, it is decomposed into three subproblems, i.e., target association, path plan, and power control. First, a cluster-evolutionary target association (CETA) algorithm is proposed, which involves dividing the UAV swarm into the multiple sub-swarms and individually matching these sub-swarms to targets. Second, a jamming-sensitive and singular case tolerance (JSSCT)-artificial potential field (APF) algorithm is proposed to plan trajectory for tracking the targets. Third, we develop a jamming-aware mean field game (JA-MFG) power control scheme, where a novel cost function is established considering the total interference. Finally, to minimize the total interference, a dynamic collaboration approach is designed. Simulation results validate that the proposed dynamic collaboration approach reduces average total interference, tracking steps, and target switching times by 28%, 33%, and 48%, respectively, comparing to existing baselines.

Scalable Multi-task Semantic Communication System with Feature Importance Ranking

Semantic communications are expected to be an innovative solution to the emerging intelligent applications in the era of connected intelligence. In this paper, a novel scalable multitask semantic communication system with feature importance ranking (SMSC-FIR) is explored. Firstly, the multi-task correlations are investigated by a joint semantic encoder to extract relevant features. Then, a new scalable coding method is proposed based on feature importance ranking, which dynamically adjusts the coding rate and guarantees that important features for semantic tasks are transmitted with higher priority. Simulation results show that SMSC-FIR achieves performance gain w.r.t. individual intelligent tasks, especially in the low SNR regime.

Semantic Communication for Internet of Vehicles: A Multi-User Cooperative Approach

Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is expected to become the central infrastructure to provide advanced services to connected vehicles and users for higher transportation efficiency and security. A variety of emerging applications/services bring explosively growing demands for mobile data traffic between connected vehicles and roadside units (RSU), imposing the significant challenge of spectrum scarcity to IoV. In this paper, we propose a cooperative semantic-aware architecture to convey essential semantics from collaborated users to servers for lowering the data traffic. In contrast to current solutions that are mainly based on piling up highly complex signal processing techniques and multiple access capabilities in terms of syntactic communications, this paper puts forth the idea of semantic-aware content delivery in IoV. Specifically, the successful transmission of essential semantics of the source data is pursued, rather than the accurate reception of symbols regardless of its meaning as in conventional syntactic communications. To assess the benefits of the proposed architecture, we provide a case study of the image retrieval task for vehicles in intelligent transportation systems. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed architecture outperforms the existing solutions with fewer radio resources, especially in a low signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime, which can shed light on the potential of the proposed architecture in extending the applications in extreme environments.

Predicted superconductivity and superionic state in the electride Li$_5$N under high pressure

Recently, electrides have received increasing attention due to their multifunctional properties as superconducting, catalytic, insulating, and electrode materials, with potential to offer other performance and possess novel physical states. This work uncovers that Li$_5$N as an electride possess four novel physical states simultaneously: electride state, super-coordinated state, superconducting state, and superionic state. By obtaining high-pressure phase diagrams of the Li-N system at 150-350 GPa using a crystal structure search algorithm, we find that Li$_5$N can remain stable as P6/mmm structure and has a 14-fold super-coordination number, as verified by Bader charge and electron localization function analysis. Aditionally, we find that its superconducting transition temperature decreases continuously with increasing pressure, contrary to the behavior of most high-pressure superconducting materials. Its superconducting transition temperature reaches the highest among all known electride at 150 GPa (Tc = 48.97 K). Besides, Li$_5$N exhibits the superionic state at 3000 K, in which N atoms act like solid, while some Li atoms flow like liquid. The above results are further verified at a macroscopic level by using deep learning potential molecular dynamics simulations.

Superconductivity and magnetism in compressed actinium-beryllium-hydrogen alloys

The discovery of new high-temperature superconductors is one of the most critical problems in materials, chemistry, and physics. This work systematically investigates fluorite-like structures of XBeH8 (X is Ac, Th, Pa, U, and Np) to gain physical insight into the pressure effects on the properties. Our results reveal that AcBeH8 and ThBeH8 are two potential high-temperature superconductors, where AcBeH8 reaching a superconducting transition temperature of 284.11 K at 150 GPa and even a value of 203.29 K at 50 GPa, ThBeH8 has Tc is 217.65 K at 200 GPa, and the predicted results provide strong candidates for achieving high temperature or even room temperature superconductivity. The analysis of pressure effects demonstrates unusual charge transfer and atomic structure in the system, with s-f migration in Ac/Th atoms and s-p migration in Be atoms, similar to the high-pressure behavior of alkaline earth metals. In the past long time, superconductivity and magnetism were considered unable to coexist. However, UBeH8 and NpBeH8 are two potential magnetic superconductors with maximum Tc of 60.70 and 107.18 K at 100 and 350 GPa, respectively, and Hubbard U calculations predict their magnetic moments with 1.52 to 1.90 and 2.49 to 2.92 muB at 0 K. The coexistence of magnetic and superconducting states may be attributed to the different sublattice actions.

As-Li electrides under high pressure: superconductivity, plastic, and superionic states

Inorganic electrides are a new class of compounds catering to the interest of scientists due to the multiple usages exhibited by interstitial electrons in the lattice. However, the influence of the shape and distribution of interstitial electrons on physical properties and new forms of physical states are still unknown. In this work, crystal structure search algorithms are employed to explore the possibility of forming new electrides in the As-Li system, where interstitial electrons behave as 1D electron chains (1D electride) in Pmmm phase of AsLi$_7$ and transform into 0D electron clusters (0D electride) in P6/mmm phase at 80 GPa. The P6/mmm phase has relatively high superconductivity at 150 GPa (Tc=38.4K) than classical electrides, even at moderate pressure with Tc=16.6K. The novel superconducting properties are conjectured to be possibly due to three Van Hove singularities at the Fermi level. In addition, a Dirac cone in the band has been observed, expanding the sources of Dirac materials. The survival of AsLi$_7$ at room temperature is confirmed by molecular dynamics simulation at 300 K. At 1000 K, the As atoms in the system act like solid, while a portion of the Li atoms cycle around the As atoms, and another portion of the Li atoms flow freely like liquid, showing the novel physical phenomenon of the coexistence of the plastic and superionic states. This suggests that the superionic and plastic states cannot only be found in hydrides but also in the electride. Our results indicate that superconducting electride AsLi$_7$ with superionic and plastic states can exist in Earth's interior.

Differentially Private ADMM for Distributed Medical Machine Learning

Due to massive amounts of data distributed across multiple locations, distributed machine learning has attracted a lot of research interests. Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) is a powerful method of designing distributed machine learning algorithm, whereby each agent computes over local datasets and exchanges computation results with its neighbor agents in an iterative procedure. There exists significant privacy leakage during this iterative process if the local data is sensitive. In this paper, we propose a differentially private ADMM algorithm (P-ADMM) to provide dynamic zero-concentrated differential privacy (dynamic zCDP), by inserting Gaussian noise with linearly decaying variance. We prove that P-ADMM has the same convergence rate compared to the non-private counterpart, i.e., $\mathcal{O}(1/K)$ with $K$ being the number of iterations and linear convergence for general convex and strongly convex problems while providing differentially private guarantee. Moreover, through our experiments performed on real-world datasets, we empirically show that P-ADMM has the best-known performance among the existing differentially private ADMM based algorithms.

Voting-Based Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Intelligent IoT

The recent success of single-agent reinforcement learning (RL) in Internet of things (IoT) systems motivates the study of multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), which is more challenging but more useful in large-scale IoT. In this paper, we consider a voting-based MARL problem, in which the agents vote to make group decisions and the goal is to maximize the globally averaged returns. To this end, we formulate the MARL problem based on the linear programming form of the policy optimization problem and propose a distributed primal-dual algorithm to obtain the optimal solution. We also propose a voting mechanism through which the distributed learning achieves the same sublinear convergence rate as centralized learning. In other words, the distributed decision making does not slow down the process of achieving global consensus on optimality. Lastly, we verify the convergence of our proposed algorithm with numerical simulations and conduct case studies in practical multi-agent IoT systems.

Caching Placement and Resource Allocation for Cache-Enabling UAV NOMA Networks

This article investigates the cache-enabling unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) cellular networks with massive access capability supported by non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The delivery of a large volume of multimedia contents for ground users is assisted by a mobile UAV base station, which caches some popular contents for wireless backhaul link traffic offloading. In cache-enabling UAV NOMA networks, the caching placement of content caching phase and radio resource allocation of content delivery phase are crucial for network performance. To cope with the dynamic UAV locations and content requests in practical scenarios, we formulate the long-term caching placement and resource allocation optimization problem for content delivery delay minimization as a Markov decision process (MDP). The UAV acts as an agent to take actions for caching placement and resource allocation, which includes the user scheduling of content requests and the power allocation of NOMA users. In order to tackle the MDP, we propose a Q-learning based caching placement and resource allocation algorithm, where the UAV learns and selects action with \emph{soft ${\varepsilon}$-greedy} strategy to search for the optimal match between actions and states. Since the action-state table size of Q-learning grows with the number of states in the dynamic networks, we propose a function approximation based algorithm with combination of stochastic gradient descent and deep neural networks, which is suitable for large-scale networks. Finally, the numerical results show that the proposed algorithms provide considerable performance compared to benchmark algorithms, and obtain a trade-off between network performance and calculation complexity.

Cache-enabling UAV Communications: Network Deployment and Resource Allocation

In this article, we investigate the content distribution in the hotspot area, whose traffic is offloaded by the combination of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication and edge caching. In cache-enabling UAV-assisted cellular networks, the network deployment and resource allocation are vital for quality of experience (QoE) of users with content distribution applications. We formulate a joint optimization problem of UAV deployment, caching placement and user association for maximizing QoE of users, which is evaluated by mean opinion score (MOS). To solve this challenging problem, we decompose the optimization problem into three sub-problems. Specifically, we propose a swap matching based UAV deployment algorithm, then obtain the near-optimal caching placement and user association by greedy algorithm and Lagrange dual, respectively. Finally, we propose a low complexity iterative algorithm for the joint UAV deployment, caching placement and user association optimization, which achieves good computational complexity-optimality tradeoff. Simulation results reveal that: i) the MOS of the proposed algorithm approaches that of the exhaustive search method and converges within several iterations; and ii) compared with the benchmark algorithms, the proposed algorithm achieves better performance in terms of MOS, content access delay and backhaul traffic offloading.

Policy Gradient from Demonstration and Curiosity

With reinforcement learning, an agent could learn complex behaviors from high-level abstractions of the task. However, exploration and reward shaping remained challenging for existing methods, especially in scenarios where the extrinsic feedback was sparse. Expert demonstrations have been investigated to solve these difficulties, but a tremendous number of high-quality demonstrations were usually required. In this work, an integrated policy gradient algorithm was proposed to boost exploration and facilitate intrinsic reward learning from only limited number of demonstrations. We achieved this by reformulating the original reward function with two additional terms, where the first term measured the Jensen-Shannon divergence between current policy and the expert, and the second term estimated the agent's uncertainty about the environment. The presented algorithm was evaluated on a range of simulated tasks with sparse extrinsic reward signals where only one single demonstrated trajectory was provided to each task, superior exploration efficiency and high average return were demonstrated in all tasks. Furthermore, it was found that the agent could imitate the expert's behavior and meanwhile sustain high return.

Single-Layer Graph Convolutional Networks For Recommendation

Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) and their variants have received significant attention and achieved start-of-the-art performances on various recommendation tasks. However, many existing GCN models tend to perform recursive aggregations among all related nodes, which arises severe computational burden. Moreover, they favor multi-layer architectures in conjunction with complicated modeling techniques. Though effective, the excessive amount of model parameters largely hinder their applications in real-world recommender systems. To this end, in this paper, we propose the single-layer GCN model which is able to achieve superior performance along with remarkably less complexity compared with existing models. Our main contribution is three-fold. First, we propose a principled similarity metric named distribution-aware similarity (DA similarity), which can guide the neighbor sampling process and evaluate the quality of the input graph explicitly. We also prove that DA similarity has a positive correlation with the final performance, through both theoretical analysis and empirical simulations. Second, we propose a simplified GCN architecture which employs a single GCN layer to aggregate information from the neighbors filtered by DA similarity and then generates the node representations. Moreover, the aggregation step is a parameter-free operation, such that it can be done in a pre-processing manner to further reduce red the training and inference costs. Third, we conduct extensive experiments on four datasets. The results verify that the proposed model outperforms existing GCN models considerably and yields up to a few orders of magnitude speedup in training, in terms of the recommendation performance.

OTFS Based Receiver Scheme With Multi-Antennas in High-Mobility V2X Systems

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) is considered as one of the most important applications of future wireless communication networks. However, the Doppler effect caused by the vehicle mobility may seriously deteriorate the performance of the vehicular communication links, especially when the channels exhibit a large number of Doppler frequency offsets (DFOs). Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a new waveform designed in the delay-Doppler domain, and can effectively convert a doubly dispersive channel into an almost non-fading channel, which makes it very attractive for V2X communications. In this paper, we design a novel OTFS based receiver with multi-antennas to deal with the high-mobility challenges in V2X systems. We show that the multiple DFOs associated with multipaths can be separated with the high-spatial resolution provided by multi-antennas, which leads to an enhanced sparsity of the OTFS channel in the delay-Doppler domain and bears a potential to reduce the complexity of the message passing (MP) detection algorithm. Based on this observation, we further propose a joint MP-maximum ration combining (MRC) iterative detection for OTFS, where the integration of MRC significantly improves the convergence performance of the iteration and gains an excellent system error performance. Finally, we provide numerical simulation results to corroborate the superiorities of the proposed scheme.

Scalable Learning Paradigms for Data-Driven Wireless Communication

The marriage of wireless big data and machine learning techniques revolutionizes the wireless system by the data-driven philosophy. However, the ever exploding data volume and model complexity will limit centralized solutions to learn and respond within a reasonable time. Therefore, scalability becomes a critical issue to be solved. In this article, we aim to provide a systematic discussion on the building blocks of scalable data-driven wireless networks. On one hand, we discuss the forward-looking architecture and computing framework of scalable data-driven systems from a global perspective. On the other hand, we discuss the learning algorithms and model training strategies performed at each individual node from a local perspective. We also highlight several promising research directions in the context of scalable data-driven wireless communications to inspire future research.

Low-Complexity Linear Equalization for OTFS Systems with Rectangular Waveforms

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a promising technology for high-mobility wireless communications. However, the equalization realization in practical OTFS systems is a great challenge when the non-ideal rectangular waveforms are adopted. In this paper, first of all, we theoretically prove that the effective channel matrix under rectangular waveforms holds the block-circulant property and the special Fourier transform structure with time-domain channel. Then, by exploiting the proved property and structure, we further propose the corresponding low-complexity algorithms for two mainstream linear equalization methods, i.e., zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE). Compared with the existing direct-matrix-inversion-based equalization, the complexities can be reduced by a few thousand times for ZF and a few hundred times for MMSE without any performance loss, when the numbers of symbols and subcarriers are both 32 in OTFS systems.

D2D-Enabled Mobile User Edge Caching: A Multi-Winner Auction Approach

In device-to-device (D2D)-enabled caching cellular networks, the user terminals (UTs) collaboratively store and share a large volume of popular contents from the base station (BS) for traffic offloading and delivery delay reduction. In this article, the multi-winner auction based caching placement in D2D-enabled caching cellular networks is investigated for UT edge caching incentive and content caching redundancy reduction. Firstly, a multi-winner once auction for UT edge caching is modeled which auctions multiple contents for multiple UTs. Then the optimization problem for content caching revenue maximization is formulated. Specifically, the "cache conflict" restriction relationship among UTs is used as one of the constraints in the problem to reduce the content caching redundancy in a UT movement scenario. The problem is solved by semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation to obtain an approximate optimal caching placement. Moreover, the payment strategy of the auction is developed as a Nash bargaining game for personal profit fairness among the UTs who win the auction for content caching. Subsequently, a multi-winner once auction based caching (MOAC) placement algorithm is proposed. In addition, due to the high complexity of MOAC, we further propose a heuristic multi-winner repeated auction based caching placement (MRAC) algorithm, which can greatly reduce the complexity with only tiny performance loss. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can reduce the traffic load and average content access delay effectively compared with the existing caching placement algorithms.

Low-Complexity Linear Equalizers for OTFS Exploiting Two-Dimensional Fast Fourier Transform

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation can effectively convert a doubly dispersive channel into an almost non-fading channel in the delay-Doppler domain. However, one critical issue for OTFS is the very high complexity of equalizers. In this letter, we first reveal the doubly block circulant feature of OTFS channel represented in the delay-Doppler domain. By exploiting this unique feature, we further propose zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) equalizers that can be efficiently implemented with the two-dimensional fast Fourier transform. The complexity of our proposed equalizers is gracefully reduced from $\mathcal{O}\left(\left(NM\right)^{3}\right)$ to $\mathcal{O}\left(NM\mathrm{log_{2}}\left(NM\right)\right)$, where $N$ and $M$ are the number of OTFS symbols and subcarriers, respectively. Analysis and simulation results show that compared with other existing linear equalizers for OTFS, our proposed linear equalizers enjoy a much lower computational complexity without any performance loss.
