Trade-off for Secure UAV-ISCC Systems

The integrated sensing, communication, and computing (ISCC) system overcomes the limitations of conventional standalone architectures. Through resource sharing and collaborative design, it dynamically optimizes and jointly enhances communication, sensing, and computing performance, thereby significantly improving overall system efficiency. This work investigates the performance trade-off among secure communication rate, radar estimation rate, and computational energy efficiency in an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted ISCC system. By jointly optimizing the UAV's three-dimensional (3D) trajectory, beamforming, user scheduling, and computational frequency, three optimization problems are formulated to maximize the average secrecy rate, sensing rate, and computational energy efficiency, respectively, thus establishing the system's performance boundaries under diverse scenarios. On this basis, the trade-off among security, sensing, and computation is further explored with the goal of maximizing the normalized weighted sum of the three performance metrics, which provides a theoretical basis for the performance-coordinated design of aerial ISCC systems.

A Joint Graph-Cut Channel Estimation Method for Multi-user Holographic MIMO

To address the challenges of high-dimensional channel estimation and underutilized spatial correlations among users in holographic MIMO (HMIMO) systems, this paper proposes a joint graph-cut algorithm for multi-user channel estimation in the wavenumber domain. The size of the conventional angular domain channel matrix increases with the number of antennas in densely-spaced HMIMO. Therefore, user channels are projected into the wavenumber domain via a Fourier harmonic transform, revealing their inherent clustered sparsity and exploiting common scatterer clusters among users. Subsequently, a joint graph-cut channel estimation (JGC-CE) algorithm based on multi-user common supports is designed. In each iteration, the algorithm first partitions user clusters to extract shared supports. Then for each user, it performs users' individual graph update and channel estimation to reconstruct the channel matrix. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms independent estimation schemes for individual users in accuracy while reducing pilot length.

AI Signal Processing Paradigm for Movable Antenna: From Spatial Position Optimization to Electromagnetic Reconfigurability

As 6G wireless communication systems evolve toward intelligence, high reconfigurability, and space-air-ground integration \cite{liu2025toward, liu2024near}, the limitations of traditional fixed antenna (TFA) have become increasingly prominent. As a remedy, spatially movable antenna (SMA) and electromagnetically reconfigurable antenna (ERA) have respectively emerged as key technologies to break through this bottleneck. SMA activates spatial degree of freedom (DoF) by dynamically adjusting antenna positions, ERA regulates radiation characteristics using tunable metamaterials, thereby introducing DoF in the electromagnetic domain. However, the ``spatial-electromagnetic dual reconfiguration" paradigm formed by their integration poses severe challenges of high-dimensional hybrid optimization to signal processing. To address this issue, we integrate the spatial optimization of SMA and the electromagnetic reconfiguration of ERA, propose a unified modeling framework termed movable and reconfigurable antenna (MARA) and investigate the channel modeling and spectral efficiency (SE) optimization for MARA. Besides, we systematically review artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions, focusing on analyzing the advantages of AI over traditional algorithms in solving high-dimensional non-convex optimization problems. This paper fills the gap in existing literature regarding the lack of a comprehensive review on the AI-driven signal processing paradigm under spatial-electromagnetic dual reconfiguration and provides theoretical guidance for the design and optimization of 6G wireless systems with advanced MARA.

Blind Channel Estimation for RIS-Assisted Millimeter Wave Communication Systems

In the research of RIS-assisted communication systems, channel estimation is a problem of vital importance for further performance optimization. In order to reduce the pilot overhead to the greatest extent, blind channel estimation methods are required, which can estimate the channel and the transmit signals at the same time without transmitting pilot sequence. Different from existing researches in traditional MIMO systems, the RIS-assisted two-hop channel brings new challenges to the blind channel estimation design. Hence, a novel blind channel estimation method based on compressed sensing for RIS-assisted multiuser millimeter wave communication systems is proposed for the first time in this paper. Specifically, for accurately estimating the RIS-assisted two-hop channel without transmitting pilots, we propose a block-wise transmission scheme. Among different blocks of data transmission, RIS elements are reconfigured for better estimating the cascade channel. Inside each block, data for each user are mapped to a codeword for realizing the transmit signal recovery and equivalent channel estimation simultaneously. Simulation results demonstrate that our method can achieve a considerable accuracy of channel estimation and transmit signal recovery.

Training Beam Design for Channel Estimation in Hybrid mmWave MIMO Systems

Training beam design for channel estimation with infinite-resolution and low-resolution phase shifters (PSs) in hybrid analog-digital milimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is considered in this paper. By exploiting the sparsity of mmWave channels, the optimization of the sensing matrices (corresponding to training beams) is formulated according to the compressive sensing (CS) theory. Under the condition of infinite-resolution PSs, we propose relevant algorithms to construct the sensing matrix, where the theory of convex optimization and the gradient descent in Riemannian manifold is used to design the digital and analog part, respectively. Furthermore, a block-wise alternating hybrid analog-digital algorithm is proposed to tackle the design of training beams with low-resolution PSs, where the performance degeneration caused by non-convex constant modulus and discrete phase constraints is effectively compensated to some extent thanks to the iterations among blocks. Finally, the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) based estimator is adopted for achieving an effective recovery of the sparse mmWave channel. Simulation results demonstrate the performance advantages of proposed algorithms compared with some existing schemes.

Beamforming Design with Partial Channel Estimation and Feedback for FDD RIS-Assisted Systems

Beamforming design with partial channel estimation and feedback for frequency-division duplexing (FDD) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted systems is considered in this paper. We leverage the observation that path angle information (PAI) varies more slowly than path gain information (PGI). Then, several dominant paths are selected among all the cascaded paths according to the known PAI for maximizing the spectral efficiency of downlink data transmission. To acquire the dominating path gain information (DPGI, also regarded as the path gains of selected dominant paths) at the base station (BS), we propose a DPGI estimation and feedback scheme by jointly beamforming design at BS and RIS. Both the required number of downlink pilot signals and the length of uplink feedback vector are reduced to the number of dominant paths, and thus we achieve a great reduction of the pilot overhead and feedback overhead. Furthermore, we optimize the active BS beamformer and passive RIS beamformer by exploiting the feedback DPGI to further improve the spectral efficiency. From numerical results, we demonstrate the superiority of our proposed algorithms over the conventional schemes.

Multi-Carrier Faster-Than-Nyquist Signaling for OTFS Systems

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation technique is promising for high-mobility applications to achieve reliable communications. However, the capacity of OTFS systems is generally limited by the Nyquist criterion, requiring orthogonal pulses in both time and frequency domains. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-carrier faster-than-Nyquist (MC-FTN) signaling scheme for OTFS systems. By adopting non-orthogonal pulses in both time and frequency domains, our scheme significantly improves the capacity of OTFS systems. Specifically, we firstly develop the signal models for both single-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) OTFS systems. Then, we optimize the delay-Doppler (DD) domain precoding matrix at the transmitter to suppress both the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) introduced by the MC-FTN signaling. For SISO systems, we develop an eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) precoding scheme with optimal power allocation (PA) for achieving the maximum capacity. For MIMO systems, we develop a successive interference cancellation (SIC)-based precoding scheme via decomposing the capacity maximization problem into multiple sub-capacity maximization problems with largely reduced dimensions of optimization variables. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed MC-FTN-OTFS signaling scheme achieves significantly higher capacity than traditional Nyquist-criterion-based OTFS systems. Moreover, the SIC-based precoding scheme can effectively reduce the complexity of MIMO capacity maximization, while attaining performance close to the optimal EVD-based precoding scheme.

Joint Hybrid and Passive RIS-Assisted Beamforming for MmWave MIMO Systems Relying on Dynamically Configured Subarrays

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems relying on hybrid beamforming structures are capable of achieving high spectral efficiency at a low hardware complexity and low power consumption. In this paper, we propose an RIS-assisted mmWave point-to-point system relying on dynamically configured sub-array connected hybrid beamforming structures. More explicitly, an energy-efficient analog beamformer relying on twin-resolution phase shifters is proposed. Then, we conceive a successive interference cancelation (SIC) based method for jointly designing the hybrid beamforming matrix of the base station (BS) and the passive beamforming matrix of the RIS. Specifically, the associated bandwidth-efficiency maximization problem is transformed into a series of sub-problems, where the sub-array of phase shifters and RIS elements are jointly optimized for maximizing each sub-array's rate. Furthermore, a greedy method is proposed for determining the phase shifter configuration of each sub-array. We then propose to update the RIS elements relying on a complex circle manifold (CCM)-based method. The proposed dynamic sub-connected structure as well as the proposed joint hybrid and passive beamforming method strikes an attractive trade-off between the bandwidth efficiency and power consumption. Our simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared to its traditional counterparts.

Weighted Sum Rate Maximization of the mmWave Cell-Free MIMO Downlink Relying on Hybrid Precoding

The cell-free MIMO concept relying on hybrid precoding constitutes an innovative technique capable of dramatically increasing the network capacity of millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. It dispenses with the cell boundary of conventional multi-cell MIMO systems, while drastically reducing the power consumption by limiting the number of radio frequency (RF) chains at the access points (APs). In this paper, we aim for maximizing the weighted sum rate (WSR) of mmWave cell-free MIMO systems by conceiving a low-complexity hybrid precoding algorithm. We formulate the WSR optimization problem subject to the transmit power constraint for each AP and the constant-modulus constraint for the phase shifters of the analog precoders. A block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is proposed for iteratively solving the problem. In each iteration, the classic Lagrangian multiplier method and the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) method are combined for obtaining near-optimal hybrid analog/digital precoding matrices. Furthermore, we extend our proposed algorithm for deriving closed-form expressions for the precoders of fully digital cell-free MIMO systems. Moreover, we present the convergency analysis and complexity analysis of our proposed method. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the algorithms proposed for both fully digital and hybrid precoding matrices.

Antenna Array Diagnosis for Millimeter-Wave MIMO Systems

The densely packed antennas of millimeter-Wave (mmWave) MIMO systems are often blocked by the rain, snow, dust and even by fingers, which will change the channel's characteristics and degrades the system's performance. In order to solve this problem, we propose a cross-entropy inspired antenna array diagnosis detection (CE-AAD) technique by exploiting the correlations of adjacent antennas, when blockages occur at the transmitter. Then, we extend the proposed CE-AAD algorithm to the case, where blockages occur at transmitter and receiver simultaneously. Our simulation results show that the proposed CE-AAD algorithm outperforms its traditional counterparts.

Wideband Channel Estimation for IRS-Aided Systems in the Face of Beam Squint

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) improve both the bandwidth and energy efficiency of wideband communication systems by using low-cost passive elements for reflecting the impinging signals with adjustable phase shifts. To realize the full potential of IRS-aided systems, having accurate channel state information (CSI) is indispensable, but it is challenging to acquire, since these passive devices cannot carry out transmit/receive signal processing. The existing channel estimation methods conceived for wideband IRS-aided communication systems only consider the channel's frequency selectivity, but ignore the effect of beam squint, despite its severe performance degradation. Hence we fill this gap and conceive wideband channel estimation for IRS-aided communication systems by explicitly taking the effect of beam squint into consideration. We demonstrate that the mutual correlation function between the spatial steering vectors and the cascaded two-hop channel reflected by the IRS has two peaks, which leads to a pair of estimated angles for a single propagation path, due to the effect of beam squint. One of these two estimated angles is the frequency-independent `actual angle', while the other one is the frequency-dependent `false angle'. To reduce the influence of false angles on channel estimation, we propose a twin-stage orthogonal matching pursuit (TS-OMP) algorithm.

Passive Beamforming Design for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted MIMO Systems

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) constitute passive devices, which are capable of adjusting the phase shifts of their reflected signals, and hence they are suitable for passive beamforming. In this paper, we conceive their design with the active beamforming action of multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) systems used at the access points (APs) for improving the beamforming gain, where both the APs and users are equipped with multiple antennas. Firstly, we decouple the optimization problem and design the active beamforming for a given IRS configuration. Then we transform the optimization problem of the IRS-based passive beamforming design into a tractable non-convex quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP). For solving the transformed problem, we give an approximate solution based on the technique of widely used semidefinite relaxation (SDR). We also propose a low-complexity iterative solution. We further prove that it can converge to a locally optimal value. Finally, considering the practical scenario of discrete phase shifts at the IRS, we give the quantization design for IRS elements on basis of the two solutions. Our simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed solutions over the relevant benchmarks.

Dynamic Hybrid Precoding Relying on Twin-Resolution Phase Shifters in Millimeter-Wave Communication Systems

Hybrid analog/digital precoding in millimeter-wave (mmWave) multi-input multi-ouput (MIMO) systems is capable of achieving the near-optimal full-digital performance at reduced hardware cost and power consumption compared to its full-RF digital counterpart. However, having numerous phase shifters is still costly, especially when the phase shifters are of high resolution. In this paper, we propose a novel twin-resolution phase-shifter network for mmWave MIMO systems, which reduces the power consumption of an entirely high-resolution network, whilst mitigating the severe array gain reduction of an entirely low-resolution network. The connections between the twin phase shifters having different resolutions and the antennas are either fixed or dynamically configured. In the latter, we jointly design the phase-shifter network and the hybrid precoding matrix, where the phase of each entry in the analog precoding matrix can be dynamically designed according to the required resolution. This method is slightly modified for the fixed network's hybrid precoding matrix. Furthermore, we extend the proposed method to multi-user MIMO systems and provide its performance analysis. Our simulation results show that the proposed dynamic hybrid precoding method strikes an attractive performance vs. power consumption trade-off.

Beam Selection for Wideband Millimeter Wave MIMO Relying on Lens Antenna Arrays

Beamspace multi-input multi-output (MIMO) relying on lens antenna arrays can significantly reduce the number of radio-frequency chains in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems through beam selection. However, the beamforming gain is actually frequency-dependent in wideband mmWave MIMO systems. This phenomenon is called beam squint, which will deteriorate the system's performance when traditional beam selection methods are used. To solve this problem, we propose a wideband beam selection method for mmWave MIMO systems relying on lens antenna arrays. Firstly, we select one beam with the maximal energy averaged over the whole band for each user and then we sequentially select the beams that contribute the most to the sum-rate. Performance analysis of the proposed wideband beam selection method is also presented. Numerical results show that the proposed method achieves higher sum-rate and energy efficiency compared with its traditional counterparts.

Channel Estimation for Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) Massive MIMO

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation outperforms orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in high-mobility scenarios. One challenge for OTFS massive MIMO is downlink channel estimation due to the large number of base station antennas. In this paper, we propose a 3D structured orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm based channel estimation technique to solve this problem. First, we show that the OTFS MIMO channel exhibits 3D structured sparsity: normal sparsity along the delay dimension, block sparsity along the Doppler dimension, and burst sparsity along the angle dimension. Based on the 3D structured channel sparsity, we then formulate the downlink channel estimation problem as a sparse signal recovery problem. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve accurate channel state information with low pilot overhead.

Channel Feedback Based on AoD-Adaptive Subspace Codebook in FDD Massive MIMO Systems

Channel feedback is essential in frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Unfortunately, previous work on multiuser MIMO has shown that the codebook size for channel feedback should scale exponentially with the number of base station (BS) antennas, which is greatly increased in massive MIMO systems. To reduce the codebook size and feedback overhead, we propose an angle-of-departure (AoD)-adaptive subspace codebook for channel feedback in FDD massive MIMO systems. Our key insight is to leverage the observation that path AoDs vary more slowly than the path gains. Within the angle coherence time, by utilizing the constant AoD information, the proposed AoD-adaptive subspace codebook is able to quantize the channel vector in a more accurate way. We also provide performance analysis of the proposed codebook in the large-dimensional regime, where we prove that to limit the capacity degradation within an acceptable level, the required number of feedback bits only scales linearly with the number of resolvable (path) AoDs, which is much smaller than the number of BS antennas. Moreover, we compare quantized channel feedback using the proposed AoD-adaptive subspace codebook with analog channel feedback. Extensive simulations that verify the analytical results are provided.

Codebook Design for Channel Feedback in Lens-Based Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems

The number of radio frequency (RF) chains can be reduced through beam selection in lens-based millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems, where the equivalent channel between RF chains and multiple users is required at the BS to achieve the multi-user multiplexing gain. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no dedicated codebook for the equivalent channel feedback in such systems. In this paper, we propose the dimension-reduced subspace codebook, which achieves a significant reduction of the feedback overhead and codebook size. Specifically, we firstly utilize the limited scattering property of mmWave channels to generate the high-dimensional vectors in the channel subspace. Then, according to the function of lens and beam selector, we propose the dimension-reduced subspace codebook to quantize the equivalent channel vector. Moreover, the performance analysis of the proposed codebook is also provided. Finally, simulation results show the superior performance of the proposed dimension-reduced subspace codebook compared with conventional codebooks.

On the Performance of Channel Statistics-Based Codebook for Massive MIMO

The channel feedback overhead for massive MIMO systems with a large number of base station (BS) antennas is very high, since the number of feedback bits of traditional codebooks scales linearly with the number of BS antennas. To reduce the feedback overhead, an effective codebook based on channel statistics has been designed, where the required number of feedback bits only scales linearly with the rank of the channel correlation matrix. However, this attractive conclusion was only intuitively explained and then verified through simulation results in the literature, while no rigorous theoretical proof has been provided. To fill in the gap between the theoretical conclusion and simulation results, in this paper, we quantitatively analyze the performance of the channel statistics-based codebook. Specifically, we firstly introduce the rate gap between the ideal case of perfect channel state information at the transmitter and the practical case of limited channel feedback, where we find that the rate gap is dependent on the quantization error of the codebook. Then, we derive an upper bound of the quantization error, based on which we prove that the required feedback bits to ensure a constant rate gap only scales linearly with the rank of the channel correlation matrix. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify this conclusion. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first one to provide a rigorous proof of this conclusion.
