Thickness-dependent magnetic properties in Pt[CoNi]n multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

We systematically investigated the Ni and Co thickness-dependent perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) coefficient, magnetic domain structures, and magnetization dynamics of Pt(5 nm)/[Co(t_Co nm)/Ni(t_Ni nm)]5/Pt(1 nm) multilayers by combining the four standard magnetic characterization techniques. The magnetic-related hysteresis loops obtained from the field-dependent magnetization M and anomalous Hall resistivity (AHR) \r{ho}_xy found that the two serial multilayers with t_Co = 0.2 and 0.3 nm have the optimum PMA coefficient K_U well as the highest coercivity H_C at the Ni thickness t_Ni = 0.6 nm. Additionally, the magnetic domain structures obtained by Magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy also significantly depend on the thickness and K_U of the films. Furthermore, the thickness-dependent linewidth of ferromagnetic resonance is inversely proportional to K_U and H_C, indicating that inhomogeneous magnetic properties dominate the linewidth. However, the intrinsic Gilbert damping constant determined by a linear fitting of frequency-dependent linewidth does not depend on Ni thickness and K_U. Our results could help promote the PMA [Co/Ni] multilayer applications in various spintronic and spin-orbitronic devices.

Accelerate Three-Dimensional Generative Adversarial Networks Using Fast Algorithm

Three-dimensional generative adversarial networks (3D-GAN) have attracted widespread attention in three-dimension (3D) visual tasks. 3D deconvolution (DeConv), as an important computation of 3D-GAN, significantly increases computational complexity compared with 2D DeConv. 3D DeConv has become a bottleneck for the acceleration of 3D-GAN. Previous accelerators suffer from several problems, such as large memory requirements and resource underutilization. To handle the above issues, a fast algorithm for 3D DeConv (F3DC) is proposed in this paper. F3DC applies a fast algorithm to reduce the number of multiplications and achieves a significant algorithmic strength reduction. Besides, F3DC removes the extra memory requirement for overlapped partial sums and avoids computational imbalance to fully utilize resources. Moreover, we design an F3DC-based hardware architecture, which consists of four fast processing units (FPUs). Each FPU includes a pre-process module, a EWMM module and a post-process module for F3DC transformation. By implementing our design on the Xilinx VC709 platform for 3D-GAN, we achieve a throughput up to 1700 GOPS and 4$\times$ computational efficiency improvement compared with prior works.

A high accuracy and low complexity quality control method for image compression

For large-scale still image coding tasks, the processing platform needs to ensure that the coded images meet the quality requirement. Therefore, the quality control algorithms that generate adaptive QP towards a target quality level for image coding are of significant research value. However, the existing quality control methods are limited by low accuracy, excessive computational cost, or temporal information dependence. In this paper, we propose a concise λ domain linear distortion model and an accurate model parameters estimation method based on the original data. Since the model parameters are obtained from the original data, the proposed method is decoupled from the RDO process and can be applied to different image encoders. Experiments show that the proposed quality control algorithm achieves the highest control accuracy and the lowest delay in the literature at the same time. The application of Alibaba's e-commerce platform also shows that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the overall bitrate while greatly reducing the bad case ratio.

Enhancement of spin-orbit torque efficiency by tailoring interfacial spin-orbit coupling in Pt-based magnetic multilayers

We study inserting Co layer thickness-dependent spin transport and spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in the Pt/Co/Py trilayers by spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance. The interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy energy density ($K_s = 2.7~erg/cm^2$), which is dominated by interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) in the Pt/Co interface, total effective spin-mixing conductance ($G_{eff,tot} = 0.42 {\times} 10^{15}~Ω^{-1} m^{-2}$) and two-magnon scattering ($β_{TMS} = 0.46~nm^2$) are first characterized, and the damping-like torque ($ξ_{DL}$ = 0.103) and field-like torque ($ξ_{FL}$ = -0.017) efficiencies are also calculated quantitatively by varying the thickness of the inserting Co layer. The significant enhancement of $ξ_{DL}$ and $ξ_{FL}$ in Pt/Co/Py than Pt/Py bilayer system originates from the interfacial Rashba-Edelstein effect due to the strong ISOC between Co-3d and Pt-5d orbitals at the Pt/Co interface. Additionally, we find a considerable out-of-plane spin polarization SOT, which is ascribed to the spin anomalous Hall effect and possible spin precession effect due to IPMA-induced perpendicular magnetization at the Pt/Co interface. Our results demonstrate that the ISOC of the Pt/Co interface plays a vital role in spin transport and SOTs-generation. Our finds offer an alternative approach to improve the conventional SOTs efficiencies and generate unconventional SOTs with out-of-plane spin polarization to develop low power Pt-based spintronic via tailoring the Pt/FM interface.

A Power and Area Efficient Lepton Hardware Encoder with Hash-based Memory Optimization

Although it has been surpassed by many subsequent coding standards, JPEG occupies a large share of the storage load of the current data hosting service. To reduce the storage costs, DropBox proposed a lossless secondary compression algorithm, Lepton, to further improve the compression rate of JPEG images. However, the bloated probability models defined by Lepton severely restrict its throughput and energy efficiency. To solve this problem, we construct an efficient access probability-based hash function for the probability models, and then propose a hardware-friendly memory optimization method by combining the proposed hash function and the N-way Set-Associative unit. After that, we design a highly parameterized hardware structure for the probability models and finally implement a power and area efficient Lepton hardware encoder. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first hardware implementation of Lepton. The synthesis result shows that the proposed hardware structure reduces the total area of the probability models by 70.97%. Compared with DropBox's software solution, the throughput and the energy efficiency of the proposed Lepton hardware encoder are increased by 55.25 and 4899 times respectively. In terms of manufacturing cost, the proposed Lepton hardware encoder is also significantly lower than the general-purpose CPU used by DropBox.
